•I thought I had this book figured out multiple times, but every time I was (thankfully) wrong. Mother Daughter Sister Stranger is a twisty book about family dynamics and long buried secrets.

•Eleven years ago, Eliza and Bea were in a plane crash that took the lives of their parents. Now, on the anniversary of their deaths, Bea fails to show to the cemetery, leaving Eliza with Bea’s daughter Piper. Eliza rushes to figure out what happened to Bea, but actually uncovers more than she anticipated.

•This book was twisty and fast from the very beginning. I genuinely enjoyed the characters and the wanted to know what happened to Bea.

Eliza and her sister Bea survived a plane crash when they were young. Unfortunately, the crash did claim the lives of their parents, and they’ve grown close over the years due to their shared history. When Bea goes missing, leaving her daughter, Piper with Eliza, she knows something is wrong since Bea would never leave Piper without reaching out. But while searching for Bea, Eliza discovers information about her family that shocks her.
The book was told from Eliza’s POV in the present as she tries to find her sister, Bea, who has disappeared. I felt the pacing was great, and the author kept up the tension throughout the story. I thought the mystery she created was great to read, and I was invested in the story throughout.
I liked the relationship between Eliza and Piper, and I appreciated that Piper was written as a smart kid rather than as though she were a toddler, which bugs me when I read a book. The emphasis on family and the lengths Eliza went to in order to save her sister and protect Piper really made this a nice addition to the mystery.
Eliza’s views on storytelling and learning about her family's story were an interesting contrast. She thought she was telling one story, but it turned out to be something completely different. She was a relatable character in that you don’t have all the answers in a stressful situation and you don’t know what to do.
Eliza’s internal dialogue was repetitive in the second half of the book, and at times she came across as a bit immature and I didn’t understand some of her decisions. For example, she would repeatedly say that she had to leave the cottage because it was unsafe and that she thought someone would come after her and Piper. But she just sat down to read more files. Her reaction to Whitney was a bit off-putting, and she was jumping to conclusions instead of simply asking Whitney what the notes in her father’s manuscript meant.
The story was told as though there was a mystery about the sister. Was there a secret she was hiding? But by the end of the book, it was a secret unrelated to her disappearance.
I was enjoying the story until the very end, when everything wrapped up a little too conveniently for me. I’m not opposed to HEA in a thriller, but everything was a bit too convenient.
I have enjoyed Hank Philippi Ryan’s books ever since I read “All This Could Be Yours”. She always writes a story that keeps me turning the page to find out what happens.

I swear Hank Phillippi Ryan has officially reached the point where I should stop trying to solve her mysteries altogether. Every single time I convince myself I've figured everything out, she casually pulls the rug out from under me, steals the floorboards, and somehow makes me question whether there was ever a floor to begin with.

This book hooked me from page one and refused to let me go. I kept telling myself I would read "just one more chapter" and suddenly half the night had disappeared. Honestly, sleep was never invited to this party anyway.

At first glance, the story seems straightforward enough. A woman vanishes. Her daughter is left behind. Her sister begins searching for answers. Simple, right?

Absolutely not.

The deeper Eliza digs into her sister's disappearance, the more everything she thought she knew starts unraveling. Not only about her family, but about her entire life. Every answer seems to create three new questions. Every discovery opens another locked door. And just when I felt comfortable enough to settle into one theory, the story gleefully smashed it to pieces.

Exactly the kind of reading experience I live for.

What I loved most was the emotional core beneath all the suspense. Yes, there are secrets. Yes, there are twists. Yes, there are moments that made me stare at the page and mutter, "Wait... WHAT?" But at its heart, this is also a story about family ties, loyalty, grief, and the frightening possibility that the people we trust most may be keeping the biggest secrets.

Eliza was an incredibly easy character to root for. She's thrown into an impossible situation, trying to protect her niece while desperately searching for her missing sister. The fear, confusion, determination, and exhaustion felt authentic throughout. And Piper absolutely stole scenes whenever she appeared. I loved watching the dynamic between aunt and niece as they were forced into circumstances neither of them could have imagined.

The pacing is lightning fast. Short chapters, constant revelations, mounting danger—everything combines into the kind of thriller that practically dares you to put it down. Spoiler alert: I failed that challenge completely.

And the twists?

Let's just say Hank Phillippi Ryan remains one of the most reliable thriller writers when it comes to making readers feel simultaneously brilliant and completely clueless. Every time I thought I was ahead of the story, I realized the author was five steps ahead of me.

The result is an addictive, tension-filled mystery packed with family secrets, emotional stakes, and enough surprises to keep even seasoned thriller readers guessing.

Overall, this is another winner from one of my favorite thriller authors. Clever, suspenseful, emotionally engaging, and impossible to stop reading once you begin. If you're looking for a fast-paced mystery that keeps your brain working overtime while your heart races, this one deserves a spot at the top of your reading list.

While the premise of this book seemed intriguing, there were a few aspects that didn't unfortunately work for me. The premise of this book is that Bea and Eliza are sisters and two sole-survivors of a plane crash that killed both of their parents. Eliza is watching Bea's daughter Piper and the trouble starts when Bea does not return to pick up her daughter. Not only is this out of character for Bea, but Eliza is shocked that her sister would miss Remembrance day, which is the anniversary of the plane crash. Bea races against the clock to find out what happened to her sister and uncovers other family secrets along the day.

I felt like the pacing of this book was frustrating to me. While the chapters are short, I felt like a lot of the chapters are just internal monologues or just logistics rather than things to advance the plot. The book doesn't really pick up until the last third of the book and that's when a lot of the big reveals are made. There are a lot of red herrings along the way, sure.

I also didn't find the ending/explanation satisfactory and to be quite honest, it had a lot of plot holes. A lot of people were acting suspicious. But there were also so many more characters than there needed to be.

I also feel like in general, the writing kind of annoyed me in a sense. That's just a personal preference, but Piper is meant to be 11, but I feel like at moments, she acts much younger. I understand that she's meant to be a child in distress, but at some moments she's reaching for her stuffed animal and the other moment, she's recording on her phone to be a wanna-be-influencer like her mom. Just to elaborate, nothing wrong with having a stuffed animal, but I feel like the characterization felt a bit off. Some of the dialogue around the Eliza/Piper interaction I found a bit cringe, like when Eliza says she's communicating with Piper in her aunt ESPN.

I would definitely be interesting in reading another book from this author, but because I read so many thrillers, this one didn't stand out to me nor did it felt super enjoyable to read.

You know that feeling when you're absolutely convinced you've cracked the case? Yeah...this book humbled me. Repeatedly.

I went into Mother Daughter Sister Stranger expecting a twisty thriller, but I wasn't expecting to get so invested in the family relationships. The mystery kept me turning pages, but it was Eliza and Piper's relationship that kept me emotionally invested. They're sisters who love each other, frustrate each other, and would do absolutely anything for each other, and that dynamic felt so real.

The story starts with a disappearance that immediately pulls you in, and from there it just keeps building. Every answer uncovers another question, every revelation makes you rethink what you thought you knew, and every time I settled on a theory, Hank Phillippi Ryan casually dismantled it a chapter later.

I loved that the twists actually felt earned. Looking back, the clues were there all along. I just completely overlooked them because I was busy accusing everyone else. That's my favorite kind of thriller. Surprise me, but make me realize I should have seen it coming.

The pacing is fantastic, too. Those short chapters are dangerous. I lost track of how many times I said, "Just one more," only to look up an hour later wondering why I was still awake.

What really made this a five-star read for me, though, was that it wasn't *just* about solving the mystery. It's about family, the stories we tell ourselves, the secrets we keep to protect the people we love, and how one buried truth can change everything. Those emotional layers gave the story so much more weight than a typical thriller.

By the final chapters, I was reading as fast as I could because I *had* to know how it was all going to come together. And when it did? Totally worth it.

If you like thrillers that keep you guessing but also give you characters you genuinely care about, definitely pick this one up. Just don't be too confident in your detective skills. This book has a way of making even your best theories look adorable.

I had a tough time with this one.
The MC kept referring herself as an amateur detective while she jumped to the oddest conclusions from the slightest clues. I could follow her inner monologue ; but found her reasoning quite off for someone purported be intelligent.

The story starts with book agent Eliza babysitting her 11 year old adopted niece. They are waiting for Bea (sister and mother respectively) to arrive. While Bea is late, it’s not unusual for her; but as time goes by, both Eliza and her niece become quite concerned.

Eliza jumps into investigation mode. This day is quite important to their family; it’s the anniversary of Bea and Eliza’s parents’ tragic deaths. An airplane crash in which the parents passed; but the two girls survived. Eliza believes that something untoward must have happened to Bea for her to miss arriving for this important date.

Eliza’s investigation creeps forward, eventually inadvertently involving the police. Eliza’s background thoughts seem much too linear, uncomplicated, and singular. There’s no jumping all over the place like a normal inquisitive mind. And who refers to an eleven year old’s outfit as a “cemetery dress”. At that age, kids are usually growing quite quickly, so it is highly unlikely that she would’ve worn a particular dress for last year’s and this year’s memorial get togethers.

Anyway, many interesting twists later, there’s some unsolicited confessions which really don’t make sense coming out years and years after the fact without a pushing reason and the story is ended, wrapped up in a neat bow.

There was a lot of promise with this plot; but it just didn’t ring true for me. Because of the main character’s simple thought processes, I was expecting this story to be categorized as YA; but I don’t see that on the genre lists.

I will try another book by this author. The buildup of tension was definitely there. The basic plot and twists were there. An interesting story that could have been better fleshed out.

Hank Phillippi Ryan does it again with Mother, Daughter, Sister, Stranger! I’ve always enjoyed Hank’s books, and this one definitely did not disappoint.

The story starts with a prologue that gives readers important details, but it also leaves you questioning everything. Did the major event that happened to the main female characters as children really happen the way they remember it? Or is there more to the story? That question stayed in the back of my mind throughout the entire book. ( til the very end)

I felt like the story was told in two parts. The first half follows the main character as she desperately tries to find her missing sister while also searching for a safe place where she and her niece can hide long enough to put the pieces together. The suspense was incredible. I kept wondering who was chasing them, where they could possibly go, and what would happen next.

The second half shifts into a deeper mystery about trust, family secrets, and the past. The main character is running on very little sleep and trying to make sense of clues she discovers in the old family home and along the way. As more secrets are uncovered, it becomes harder to know who to trust and what is actually true.

Enter the TWIST!!! 🤯

At its heart, this story is about the powerful bond between a mother, daughter, and sisters. No matter the obstacles, they are determined to find each other and uncover the truth. The emotional family connections combined with the nonstop suspense make this another winner from Hank Phillippi Ryan.

If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers filled with family secrets, twists, and strong female characters, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Stranger is a book you won’t want to miss.

Still carrying the emotional scars of the plane crash that claimed her parents’ lives, Eliza Ramsey has always sought comfort in books, believing every story deserves a happy ending. But when Bea doesn’t show up to pick up her daughter, Piper, after their annual week together, Eliza is forced to confront the possibility that her sister is in serious danger.

Determined to find her sister, she begins digging into Bea’s disappearance, only to uncover long-buried family secrets and shocking truths about her family’s past. It’s a suspenseful thriller that blends mystery, family drama, and unexpected twists as Eliza races to protect the people she loves.

🚨 SPOILERS AHEAD 🚨

This book was just okay for me. The mystery of what happened kept me turning the pages, but there were several parts that felt underdeveloped or simply fell flat.

A few things, in particular, stood out to me. Whitney’s connection to the murder victim, Caroline, was intriguing—we learn Whitney was her godmother, but I wanted much more background on that relationship. It felt like there was untapped potential there.

Bea’s incredibly blasé response to where she had been also didn’t make much sense to me, especially considering Eliza was completely beside herself trying to find her. That reaction just didn’t feel believable.

Another thing that bothered me was how Bea so easily believed that Eliza had asked Aunt Margaret to tell her not to pick Piper up as planned or attend Remembrance Day at the cemetery. Considering Bea, Eliza, and Aunt Margaret were no longer particularly close, it felt odd that Bea wouldn’t question that message at all.

Moments like these felt a little too convenient, unrealistic, or underdeveloped, which ultimately kept me from fully connecting with the story. While the central mystery was compelling enough to keep me reading, those issues led me to give the book 3 stars.

Hank Phillippi Ryan is one of my favorite authors, so I devoured her new book, "Mother Daughter Sister Stranger." Hank is a powerful storyteller, so the story is gripping right from the start. Eliza is caring for her niece Piper, waiting for sister Bea to pick up her daughter. Bea never shows, doesn't respond to messages, and even misses an important family event. The tension keeps building from there. Clues drop along the way, leaving Eliza - and us, the readers - trying to figure out what's really going on and whether Bea's disappearance may relate to a serial killer from years ago.

I have to admit, as invested as I was in the book, Eliza began to lose some of my sympathy when she began pushing herself past the point of exhaustion. It reminded me a bit of Hank's last book "All This Can Be Yours"; the frazzled protagonist is so tired she can't make rational decisions or reach reasonable conclusions about her situation. Eliza works herself into a similar state in "Mother Daughter Sister Stranger". By the end, she's not so much piecing together what's really going on as she is standing around letting other people explain what's happening and why. It really makes me miss the days when Hank's main characters were investigative reporters who dug into their story and let us follow along as they worked things out.

All that said, I was never to the point of wanting to throw the book across the room, and I will definitely still read Hank's next book (and the next and the next). For the most part "Mother Daughter Sister Stranger" is an enjoyable read, It's just that little bit about the final chapters that fell somewhat flat for me.

Hank does it again! This one was a twisty masterpiece in which I really thought I had it all figured it out! Newsflash! I didn’t, and I so appreciate that! Eliza is an interesting character - not a mom, but an aunt, and a damn good one at that. She literally does everything she possibly can to keep Piper safe, even if it’s just from hearing the things people say. I loved the short chapters, I felt like this really helped contribute to the tension. I had an idea formed in my head about who the Greylock killer was, and I was shocked to find out I was completely wrong! In fact, most of my other theories stemmed from that one idea, so everything else I believed was wrong as well. But I love when an author can make you believe one thing while it being another! That is true mastery. The last 10% was a wild, twisty surprise, and I loved every minute of it!

Woah, Hank Ryan... you’ve won me over.

This was my first book by the author, so I had no idea what to expect, and wow boy, did I love it. I don’t usually read the acknowledgements at the end of books, but for some reason I did this time, and I’m so glad I did. It reminded me why I love reading in the first place, how amazing it is to keep falling in love with words over and over again. As readers, we already sort of know that feeling, but it’s nice to be reminded of it every once in a while. We keep picking up new books hoping one of them will really stay with us, and this one absolutely did.

It had me completely hooked. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, constantly needing to know what would happen next. The mystery was so well done that I flew through it. My only small complaint was the reveal surrounding Bea’s disappearance. The entire story seemed to be building toward it, so when the explanation finally came, it felt a little underwhelming compared to what I had imagined. But this book also only takes place in like 48 hours so probably that’s just me being nitpicky.

The characters were fantastic, and I especially loved the relationship between Eliza and Piper. Their bond was so lovely and added so much heart to the story.

If you’re looking for a well-written mystery that keeps you guessing and turning pages, I’d definitely recommend this one.

Eliza Ramsey’s life begins to unravel when her sister disappears on the anniversary of the plane crash that killed their parents and left both sisters forever changed. What begins as a missing-person mystery quickly becomes a tense, twist-filled story about loyalty, memory, and the secrets people keep to survive.

I give this one 4 out of 5 stars. I could not put it down and stayed up late to finish it in one sitting. Ryan does a strong job building suspense and shifting suspicion; every time I thought I had figured out what happened, the story changed direction. The pacing is gripping, and the emotional stakes around the sisters and their family history make the mystery feel personal as well as tense.

I did struggle with one major plot point surrounding Eliza’s sister’s disappearance, and I also had questions about the adoption-related storyline. Those elements kept this from being a full five-star read for me, but they did not take away from how compelling the book was overall. This would be a great choice for thriller and suspense readers, especially book clubs looking for a story with family drama, secrets, and plenty to discuss. Readers sensitive to discussions of plane crashes may want to approach with care.

With a title like this, I knew we were in for a ride with Hank Phillippi Ryan’s newest thriller. Eliza and Bea Ramsey miraculously survived a horrific plane crash that claimed their parents’ lives. The girls were taken in by an aunt who supported them but did not really fill the emotional gaps the girls needed. Now as adults, they go to the cemetery on “Remembrance Day” to honor their parents. Bea is a mother to a precocious 11-year-old, ironically named Piper. Piper spends the night with her aunt Eliza on the eve of Remembrance Day but for whatever reason, Bea does not show up to get her daughter. This leaves Eliza searching for clues as her sister has gone missing. Eliza fears that Bea may have deserted her daughter or worse, killed herself. In a family riddled with curses, Eliza turns to the only person she knows that can help- her aunt.
What transpires next will have you questioning if your own family has such a secretive past and will leave you shaking your head and wondering “HOW DID RYAN COME UP WITH THIS TWIST” at the very end. Ryan proves yet again why she is at the top of her game in the thriller genre- and you are left hanging until the last page.

If a deliciously twisted psychological thriller is your jam, then this latest offering by renowned author Hank Phillippi Ryan may well be the book for you.

Aunt Eliza and eleven year old niece Piper have enjoyed a lovely week together, hanging out at Eliza's Boston Backbay apartment. Disappointment settles in when Eliza's older sister Bea doesn't connect with them in time for their annual Remembrance Day celebration. With each passing day without Bea, the girls struggle with worry and strange events start to accumulate. Has something happened to Bea and are Eliza and Piper now sitting ducks and in harm's way? Only time will tell.

Author Hank Philippi Ryan does a spectacular job of keeping the reader just a touch off balance as characters are introduced and their obscured motivations gradually revealed. Her writing style flows smoothly as she deftly interweaves the various narratives. The tension is well maintained throughout the course of the book with a perfectly heightened increase at the penultimate moment. It's a twisty tale where the differing narratives all come together in a spectacular climax. I just could not put this book down.

Hank does it again! What a great read…again! Eliza and Beatrice are sisters who survived a plane crash in which their parents were killed. After the tragedy, and while recuperating, their Aunt Margaret swooped in to take care of them. Beatrice is a fashion influencer, is married to Kyle, and they have an adopted daughter, Piper. Eliza works for a renowned publicist, who sought her out at college in Chicago and hired her on the spot. They both live in Boston and see each other frequently, including “Remembrance Day”, the day they get together and visit their parents’ graves. Except this year, Bea doesn’t show up and isn’t answering her phone. Piper, who was staying with Eliza, is concerned and Eliza goes to Bea’s house only to find out that all of her clothes are gone and Kyle is in Japan.
Eliza and Piper are thrust into a mystery that spins them in circles. Eliza is hearing things about her sister that she just doesn’t believe (why would she abandon her daughter?) and, after seeing the figure of someone in Eliza’s apartment through the window, she decides to take Piper out to the family’s cabin in western Massachusetts to try to sort everything out.

This is a mystery filled with tension and includes long-buried family secrets and surprises. Highly entertaining and engrossing. Definitely a MUST read!

I was absolutely shocked when I found out I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. When it arrived, all I could think was HOLY CRAP, bookmail! I dived right in, and the very first chapter had me completely hooked.

Imagine this: you're babysitting your niece or nephew, and your sibling just... never comes back to pick them up. What would you even do?

That is the nightmare Eliza faces. She and her sister, Bea, have been through absolutely everything together. But when Bea vanishes into thin air, Eliza’s entire life unravels. To find her sister, she is forced to dig deep into her family's murky, secretive past.

I completely devoured this book. The chapters are short, fast-paced, and left me constantly asking: Who is involved? What on earth is actually going on here? Just when I thought I had a handle on things, the third act hit. The twists just kept "twisting," and I absolutely loved it.

If you enjoy a gripping psychological thriller that keeps you guessing without being overly dark or graphic, this is definitely the one for you. Add it to your TBR immediately—it hits shelves in September 2026!

I swear, I'm almost getting tired of beginning all my Hank Phillippi Ryan reviews with "Well, Hank has done it again!", but she has soooooo.... anyway, yes, this is yet ANOTHER 5-star read from her. Sisters Eliza and Bea are survivors of a plane crash that killed their parents 11 years ago. Needless to say, they have a strong bond. Every year since, they get together on the Anniversary. This year, Eliza has Bea's daughter, Piper over the night before. Bea fails to show up the next day. She would never leave her daughter or miss the Anniversary, Eliza knows. Bea is not answering the phone either. Eliza and Piper go to Bea's house and clothes and her passport are missing. Cut and dried, right? Just one catch. Again, Bea would never leave Piper. After the police leave, Eliza begins her own search. Oh, and there's a serial killer! I swear, this story just gets better and better! Also, the story is set in Boston, which I love. Now, it does start off a wee bit slow, but trust me, it's just setting the stage for what's to come! I tore through the pages to figure out what happened to Bea and how everything was all connected. Once again Hank, job well done! I can't wait to see what's next!

There were a lot of things I enjoyed with this book. The premise is the perfect setup for a psychological thriller. I loved the short chapters that pull you in, as Eliza first realizes something is wrong and slowly starts to let her panic grow.

But my favorite parts was how Hank Phillippi Ryan built the suspense, the mental strain (specifically for Eliza but also capturing Piper’s emotions), and the genuine unknown around Bea’s missing vs hiding situation. I especially think she captured the emotional response to realizing you don’t know your sister/family that well perfectly.

For full transparency, there were a lot of times I struggled with Eliza - her decisions, her logic, and where she let her fear run away with her (and where she didn’t) didn’t always make sense to me. For example, she spiraled a lot at the lake house, but even though she knew she was in danger there she made no effort to leave (or to get Piper out of the house). Or when she was trying to get into Bea’s house, and kept flip-flopping on whether it was important to go in or if she was scared to.

I was thrilled to receive an early copy of this book, and it absolutely lived up to my expectations. From the first few pages, I had a feeling I was in for a wild ride, and once I started reading, I had a hard time putting it down. The short, punchy chapters kept me turning the pages late into the evening.

For me, the most enjoyable part was the slow-building suspense. The ominous feeling hanging over the story where you know something is coming and you are just bracing yourself for the impact. And the impact comes again and again as you second guess who to trust and what to believe.

As an aunt with no children of my own, I especially connected with Eliza and could easily picture myself in her shoes, wondering what I would do in the same situation. I adored Piper, who was smart, precocious, and brought so much heart to the story. The family’s history of tragedy made me even more invested in finding out what had happened.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and if you enjoy twisty, slow-burn thrillers with family drama and surprises right up to the final pages, you’re going to love this one. It’s well worth the wait for its September 1st release.

Lazy river and an ebook in a waterproof case on a beautiful day while kids are safely romping around with friends? Y'all, this felt like winning the lottery.

Plus, the book was GOOD. Am I surprised Hank wrote another banger? No, but how does she do it?!?!

MDSS is a domestic thriller, clean of language, gore, etc, which I find incredible. Hank writes suspense and twists with finesse and sophistication instead of jump scares or cheap shots which makes the reading experience truly thrilling and without feeling emotionally manhandled by the author.

The clues are there, and she leaves you to sort through your suspicions--which will be wrong because her twists are brilliant! There are MULTIPLE mysteries wrapped together!!

I am a die-hard fan of Hank Phillippi Ryan and she never disappoints! She’s a master at drawing out suspense and making us wait to learn even the tiniest little details. This story is about Eliza, who is supposed to meet her sister Bea for their yearly Remembrance Day. They do it every year, remembering the day their parents were killed in a fiery plane crash. The sisters were also on that plane, but they survived, and their family is very scarce now—-only their aunt Margaret and Bea’s eleven year old daughter Piper remain. They have a routine they observe on this day and it’s important to both of them. But on this Remembrance Day Bea is nowhere to be found. The rest of the story is about Eliza, who also now has Piper in her care, trying to find out what has happened to Bea, and believe me, it’s a twisted tale! There are multiple layers involved, and the writer keeps peeling them back, one after another, until finally, finally we reach a conclusion. But then there’s more! And we had no idea about all the family secrets.

As usual with this author, this one is a five star read for me!

This one had me on my toes from the start. This story is much more complex and twisty then I ever expected. I was convinced so many times that I knew what happened and of course I did not. Hank Phillippi Ryan knows how to write a phenomenal ending that will make your jaw drop and your brain begin smoking. How does she do it every single time? The characters are intriguing and I wanted to dig into their backstories. Piper is my favorite. So inquisitive and came up with so many questions and interesting ways of looking at things. I loved her, she added so much to the story.

Eliza and her sister Bea were on her father's small plane when it went down and took the lives of their mother and father. She has never fully recovered. How can you from something so horrifying and tragic? She loves the week that she has her niece, Piper. Eliza is able to spoil her and enjoy the little spitfire. When Bea does not show up on the day of Remembrance. Eliza knows something is going on. Bea would not miss a day that is so important and she would not worry Piper. As the days move forward and still no sign of Bea. Eliza goes to the police and begins to dig into Bea's past. What she finds is beyond what she could have ever imagined. Will her family be able to recover from another tragedy in their lives?

I could not put this book down. Its eyes followed me around the room until I picked it up once again. Yes, my book had eyes. The ending is insane, so delicious, and beyond anything I could have imagined. Thank you to Hank Phillippi Ryan and Minotaur Books for my gifted copy of this twisted read.

Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me. While it had potential, the story felt far too long for what it was trying to accomplish. There were so many plotlines, twists, connections, and unexpected turns that it became overwhelming rather than engaging. Instead of adding interest many of the story elements felt unnecessary and made the book feel cluttered.

The pacing had significant amount of fluff. Large sections seemed to drag without moving the book along making it difficult to stay invested. At times it felt like the book was trying to do too many things at once rather than focusing on the strongest parts of the narrative.

One aspect that stood out as particularly odd was the storyline involving the physics teacher father writing a book before his death. While it was clearly intended to be meaningful, it felt disconnected from the rest of the story and added to the overall sense that too many ideas were competing for the story.

The overall story is interesting, but the excessive length, numerous coincidences, and overcrowded plot ultimately made this a disappointing read for me.

This captivating new book from Hank Phillippi Ryan is everything I want in a thriller! Highly recommend! It is a story I couldn't put down and finished in less than a day. This is the kind of book you stay up half the night reading. Suspenseful, fast-paced, and with relatable characters, the book begins with our FMC, Eliza, remembering the stomach-dropping sensation of falling, but not the plane crash that killed both her parents over a decade ago. Then the mystery (of where Eliza's sister is) begins. There are twists and turns, but there is also a great big dose of heart and family (both biological and found)! It's been a while since I noted an FMC in a thriller that I liked as much as Eliza. She seemed rational and down-to-earth; she was honest about what she could and couldn't do. Even the Acknowledgments section was fun to read! I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you to Minotaur Books and the author for providing the e-copy via NetGalley for review. I was initially drawn in by the premise, and the first half of the book was genuinely engaging, keeping me on the edge of my seat as the mystery unfolded. However, the pacing felt significantly off in the second half. I found the narrative bogged down by too much fluff, and the internal monologue of the main character became quite repetitive, which slowed the momentum considerably.
While there were a few genuinely unexpected twists that I enjoyed, others felt far too obvious. It was an interesting read, but it didn't quite stick the landing for me.

When Bea suddenly disappears on the anniversary of their deaths, failing to pick up her daughter Piper, Eliza is left searching for answers. As she investigates her sister’s disappearance, she begins to uncover what she believed about her family may not be completely true.

The novel has an intriguing premise and is made especially readable by its short chapters. While I found the first half somewhat slower, I became much more engaged in the second half as the mystery deepened, the tension increased, and more of the family’s secrets came to light. The story also features several effective twists that kept me interested in discovering the truth.
The heavy focus on Eliza’s internal monologue, at times, didn't work for me. At times her thought processes and decisions felt difficult to follow. Even so, the novel has a strong concept and steadily building suspense.
