My first immersive read via ARCs…
One would think that after finishing this roughly 11 hours ago, I would be able to write a very coherent review. Instead, I’ve been staring at my computer screen struggling to put all my thoughts together. All I know is that White Mountain is a book that had my attention for four hours and 30 minutes but soon turned into something that I felt like I just needed to get through. The last two hours and 33 minutes felt long winded, overwhelmingly confusing, and kind boring. Because of these feelings, I am more than thankful for Dreamscape Media accepting my request for the audiobook. Between Geraldine Hakewill having the perfect voice and being able to read this at 2.00x the speed, I was able to find a small amount of enjoyment as I finished this. It really does sadden me to rate this 3 stars but, it is what it is, I guess.
White Mountain is the second book in the Black River Duology. Normally, my OCD would be having a fit over me reading this series out of order but, once I got approved for the audiobook (my first ALC approval), I just knew that I needed to drop everything and give this book a chance. Oddly enough, a person can read White Mountain first and then backtrack to Black River. Because I chose this route for myself, I don’t know if I can read Black River. Yes, White Mountain does contain major spoilers but, where White Mountain features a very likable FMC (Ophelia Sliver), Black River features a very annoying FMC (Dusty Silver). Dusty Silver is the other reason why I rated this a 3 star read.
In White Mountain, a reader is supposed to spend their entire time inside Ophelia (Opi) Silver’s head. Given that her entire life has just changed (being turned into a vampire from this thing called an orb and her mother leaving town without so much as a goodbye), a reader is supposed read a story about her not just understanding her new life but falling in love with Eli Blake. Instead, White Mountain is divided into Four Parts and the transition into each part is not smooth. Because the physical ARC isn’t formatted into these Four Parts, I had to learn about them via the audiobook. A reader is also forced to keep track of which character is controlling each chapter. One minute the reader is reading things from Opi’s POV and then the next it’s either Dusty’s POV, Eli’s POV, Will’s POV, Chris’s POV, Mali’s POV or all 6 POVs. Because of all these different POVs, this is where I wish the audiobook had a multi-casting narrative. Again, Geraldine Hakewill did an amazing job at keeping White Mountain entertaining, but she failed at giving each character their own voice. There were times when I had to keep restarting to audiobook just to be reminded on who’s POV I was listening to. It got really annoying and quite frustrating. I truly hope that the physical book (with its very interesting cover and beautiful spray edges) is formatted in a way that the reader does come to both enjoy and understand what White Mountain is all about.
A major part of me wishes that White Mountain was the only book to be written. When I think about reading Black River (yes I have the ARC), I don’t feel any motivation to do so. Being inside Dusty’s head while reading White Mountain wasn’t a pleasant experience. She came off as very selfish and controlling. It’s like everything was all about her and what she was going through. Never mind that her sister, Opi, was going through something. Never mind that her best friend, Mali, was going through stuff too. White Mountain quickly turned into the Dusty show and I was quickly turned off. Ruby Jean Cottle allowed Dusty to have so much airtime that a reader struggles to enjoy Opi falling in love with Eli (which was fun and beautiful when it happened.) White Mountain didn’t feel like Opi mattered and instead a reader is just given all the information that Ruby Jean Cottle forgot to add in Black River about Dusty. I wanted more Opi and Eli moments because, ooohmgee, they were everything that I needed this month.
While the audiobook wasn’t perfect, it is the perfect way to enjoy White Mountain. And because I was spoiled by this enjoyment, I am going wait patiently for my library to order the audiobook for Black River on Libby. Until then, I will be placing Black River on my “Will Not Provide Feedback” list. Hopefully, the wait won’t be too long. As for Ruby Jean Cottle, I have intentions continuing to follow her writing career. I feel like she has a good Dark Academia up her sleeve. I just hope that next time the synopsis matches the story.

If you love paranormal stories with vampires and small town romance thats dark and a little unique you’ll love White Mountain.
The teenagers of White Mountain have recently changed, they’re craving blood, their senses have heightened and something is happening beneath the mountain.
Months after the change teenager Dusty has a premonition that her sister Ophelia is in danger and there’s a menacing shadow hanging about.
Ophelia’s struggling more than the others since the change, trying to control her thirst. It’s been five years since her mother left them, their father is an environmental conservation officer.
I loved Ophelia’s character so much and then when she came into her own unique power, that was magical.
Detective Ella Reed begins investigating the trail of unsolved deaths in the town.
Bloodlust, coming of age, mystery and twists make this YA story an inventive and entertaining read that’s not your traditional vampire novel as it has a dab of science fiction, think X-Files.
I haven’t read Black River, book 1 yet but I really hope to, I suggest you buy the books together but you could easily read book 2 alone and enjoy.

I think I might've liked this even more than book one.
As the final book in the Black River duology, this one definitely delivered on a lot of things I was hoping for.
First of all… the romance.
OMG I did not fully see it coming, but I was rooting for them from the very beginning. And this time? I actually felt it. The tension, the build-up, the care between them… it was done so much better compared to book one with Dusty and Will. Still a sloooow burn, but a GOOD one at least.
Plot-wise, I liked that we get more answers about what’s actually going on. The story expands and things get darker. That said, I did feel like some parts of the plot were a bit unclear or not fully developed at times, which made a few moments slightly confusing.
Character-wise… Ophelia was such a standout for me in this book. I loved her. Was she a bit reckless and bratty at times? Yes. But also… she is still a teenager, so it made sense.
Now… Dusty.
I get it. I really do. She’s worried about her sister. But oh my god… let the girl breathe. She was definitely the most frustrating character for me in this installment. ( I felt like they switched places, in book 1 Ophelia had her moments, in book 2 Dusty, lol ^^)
Complaints aside, I still really enjoyed this. I picked it up as soon as I got it and it kept me hooked until the end.

Four months after everything changed…Opi is struggling to figure out who she is and what she’s becoming. She’s dealing with a thirst she can barely control, feelings she doesn’t know what to do with, and a big sister who is trying to protect her. Dusty babe…I love you but LET HER BREATHE.😂
Opi sometimes makes decisions that have me wanting to reach through the pages and shake some sense into her but that’s what made her feel real. She’s still growing, still figuring herself out, and still learning that changing doesn’t mean losing who you are.
AND THEN THERE’S ELI.👀🖤
Pull up a chair babes because the tension between these two had me INVESTED. The push and pull. The slowwwww burn build up. The way their relationship develops while everything around them is threatening to fall apart. The romance was more this time around. Their connection was a good balance to the darker elements of the story. But don't come into this thinking we're just getting cute supernatural romance, babes. Oh no….The mystery is still very much alive!🩸

That message hit me because growth isn't always comfortable. Sometimes you have to let go of the version of yourself you know to become the person you're meant to be.🥹
By the end I was left feeling satisfied with the journey while also wanting MORE. More of this world, more of these characters, basically more everything. Ruby…I’m not ready to say goodbye!😭🖤 Let me now mourn the end of this duology and pretend I don't need another book set in this universe.

Vampires for fall babyyyyy.
I read Black River a few months ago and fell in love with it. I loved how it started out very mysterious and things unravel over time. The ending left me wanting the next installment, so when this duology showed up on my doorstep from Henry Holt I was so excited.
White Mountain follows Dusty’s sister Ophelia. She is showing the same signs of bloodlust that her sister had. I enjoyed finding out about her abilities, and I love how the book felt so connected to the land (which she mentions in the acknowledgments at the end!). The developing relationship between her and a character I grew so fond of in Black River was unexpected, but I was here for it. This series honestly gives me so much nostalgia of high school vampire stories that I grew up with. The ending was action packed. My eyes were glued to the last twenty pages or so. I will admit that I didn’t realize this was a duology because I felt like I had some lasting questions at the end. It did feel a little rushed. But overall I enjoyed this book and I’ll be recommending!

Opi is now affected by the same bloodlust as her sister Dusty. She must learn to deal with it, whilst yearning for the same connection with someone, like Dusty has her boyfriend Will.

She struggles with her need for blood however, and feeding once a week from an understanding friend is not satiating her. Still reeling from drinking from a loved one to a dangerous level for them, Opi is full of guilt.
But this one event has Dusty asking her friend Eli to watch over Opi. Dusty fears for others and Opi's safety, but this constant hovering is angering Opi.
Eli and Opi clash as they spend so much time together, and all the while another 'changed' White Mountain teenager is changing others, putting them all at risk.
When the police begin investigating a body found at the roots of a felled tree, tension rises among Opi, Dusty and their friends. Can they keep their secret? The reason behind everything is slowly revealed and they must all work together to fight the force that changed their lives.
Review
I enjoyed reading this episode in Opi's point of view, but I enjoyed the surprise of Black River better. This novel however, pulls everything together, including the reason for their mother's disappearance when they were young, what a rebel vampire is actually doing, and the force that has caused the changes in their lives.
Romance is a much bigger part of this episode, with Opi and Eli being the main focus of this thread. The increased tension with a police investigation makes White Mountain gripping, but I would describe this novel as a slow burn type of read with a satisfying conclusion.

+ I thought the narrator did a pretty good job with bringing this story to life.
+ This is book two and the conclusion of the Black River Duology and I thought book one ended very abruptly. Things pick up right after the ending of book one. Opi (Ophelia), Dusty’s younger sister, is trying to deal with being a vampire. She and Dusty butt heads on a lot of things, but they work things out eventually. Dusty has a premonition that Opi is in danger so Eli, her best friend, takes on the job of keeping an eye on Opi.
+ My favorite part of this story had to be the romance storyline. Dusty is solid with Will, they are happy together. But I was really invested in Opi’s love life. She’s someone who is growing and learning to accept what she has changed into and I liked her growth and the romance that came with it.
~ As much as I love the young adult romance relationships in this story, I wanted a resolution about JD and the story moves a bit too slowly for me on that. Dusty and her friends are trying to keep on the down low but a detective is in town asking questions. To top it off Dusty has the premonitions about Opi and they are all trying to figure out what happened to JD. Nothing comes to light about JD until the very end. I feel like most of the story was about Dusty, Opi and Eli adjusting to being vampires and doing teenage things – like going to a party, formal and falling in love. I don’t mind those things but I did want the JD storyline to be stronger.
Final Thoughts:
I think I enjoyed this reading experience as an audiobook more than I enjoyed book one as an ebook, so I’m glad I got the alc for this book. I did think this was more romance focused, which I really enjoyed, but I did want to know more about JD and I feel like we didn’t get too much of that. Things again moved slowly in this story but I the romance kept me invested. There is an explanation about JD and the dead bodies at the end but I felt the explanation was rushed. Overall though I think this is a solid ending to the duology.

To make matters worse, a detective shows and starts investigating the unsolved d*aths, threatening to expose Opi, Dusty, and Eli for what they are.
WHITE MOUNTAIN is the conclusion to the BLACK RIVER duology. This is a YA paranormal romance with a touch of mystery. I really loved the first book, so I had extremely high expectations for this one (and if you've read the first book, you know so much was left unanswered). Like why did that happen to them? Where did [REDACTED] go? Etc.? Luckily, this did pretty much answer all those questions.
WHITE MOUNTAIN was a great read. It was eerie and atmospheric like the first book. Same setting, same characters, but now with the knowing and realization that something dark had settled over these people. There was danger lurking at every turn (for Dusty and the others, but also for the town). I didn't like this as much as the first book, though. The pacing slowed around the middle, and I felt like they hadn't discovered enough about what happened to them or with [REDACTED]. Yeah, they were investigating this "curse," but I wanted more answers that far in. The ending is where it's at. I think I read the last few chapters quicker than I read and part of this duology. It was action-packed, high-stakes, and pretty much carried this book.
If you're looking for a paranormal duology, this is for you. It's perfect for the chilly months.

I love Demon Fairy Opi (she's not literally one, you'll get it)!
For me this second part of the duology was better than the first in experience (more comfortable to read) and characters (which no more felt like a group of oh so "special" superheroes), but less attractive in plot (less of a logical line and strategy, mostly predictable events, but quite interesting to read anyway).
The way Dusty overcontrolled Opi was extremely annoying. I don't thing that kind of "care" for her sister did any good. And controlling more in the face of a coming danger sounds even worse. I guess that's another reason why I liked this book much more than the first — this one is Opi's and Black River was Dusty's. And Dusty's so annoying in comparison.
The story about the mother was kinda strange. I don't understand the logic in characters' actions in that moment. It just seemed like the author wanted the story to be told somehow and shoved it there failing to build any logical connection, like an NPC was filling in the needed info. And there were other moments like this later. Sadly turned out to be just for another plot moments, not character interactions/development and whatever. A lot of scenes with side characters felt like we were there just to get some insights/steps into the plot, not the naturally flowing story.
Overall I liked it anyway, enjoyed reading. It had original worldbuilding despite the classical topic, characters I loved (most of them. Not Dusty though), and many other memorable details!

I was so invested into the romance between Opi and Eli, I absolutely loved their dynamic. The tension, the banter, the build-up, I loved every single aspect.
I particularly loved Opi’s character development, particularly how relatable it was. Like, yes I appreciate Dusty’s character development into someone who isn’t afraid to feel or face emotion. On the other hand though, Opi’s was about learning to come to terms with growth and changing into a different person with the underlying message that you shouldn’t become too comfortable being the person you are now because growth and changing yourself is an inevitable part of life. I think as a 21-year-old who is still trying to figure out who she is and wants to be, this character development hit me deeper and that’s why I loved the book so much.
However, towards the end, I did feel a little bit confused as to how the story was wrapping up. For example, I didn’t really understand that the shadow was gone until they actually explicitly stated it. Things like that made the ending a bit confusing. But I did really enjoy seeing Opi and Eli end up together. They will always be my favourite couple of the entire series!
Babes, this is the perfect paranormal romance series to read if you’re in the mood for a cozy paranormal romance and want to mega-relate to the characters.

Opi is still struggling to come to terms with it but Dusty seems to have everything under control. Opi feels increasingly bitter and unrecognisable to herself, not helped by Eli Blake, who insists he's trying to help her even as she tells herself not to trust his charm. Meanwhile, the police are closing in on the secrets they are trying to keep.
As the closing book in this duology, I thought it delivered on what I was hoping for!
The romance between Opi and Eli was the highlight for me. I didn't fully see it coming in book one, but I was rooting for them early on in this one. It's still a slow burn, but a well earned one!!

White Mountain continues the eerie, small town vibes that were laid down in Black Mountain. In this finale to the Black River duology, the mysteries continue to develop for Dusty, Opie, Eli and the rest of the characters. I really enjoyed how this paranormal plot was thought out. We have the vampire element to the story but there were other paranormal aspects in the town that made the story more intense and thrilling.
With teenage characters going through so many changes in their bodies, we have a lot of angst, emotional turmoil & relationship development. I loved exploring the relationships, especially between Opie & Eli. I feel like the author has really captured their feelings well in this story.
The Black River duology is the perfect addition to your TBR for spooky season.

White Mountain wasn’t quite my personal vibe, but I can absolutely see it being a great read for the right audience! The pacing was a little slow to start, and it leaned heavily into YA, which isn’t typically what I gravitate toward. But with supernatural elements, environmental secrets, teenagers discovering their abilities, and young people fighting back against powerful forces, this one gives major Stranger Things vibes!
I enjoyed watching Opi’s character develop as she began discovering who she was and what she was becoming. As the teenagers navigate their changing world, mistakes are made, and their attempts to fix or cover them up only create an increasingly tangled web of secrets.
The audiobook was well done! The single narrator delivered a solid performance that told the story effectively without any extra bells and whistles.

White Mountain offers a fresh take on vampire fiction by blending paranormal mystery, coming of age drama, romance, and a touch of science fiction. The small town setting, eerie atmosphere, and mysterious events beneath the mountain kept the story intriguing, while Ophelia was an easy character to root for and her relationship with Eli was a highlight. The multiple points of view add depth to the story, though they can sometimes feel overwhelming and take attention away from Ophelia's journey. Even so, the mystery, unique twist on vampires, and steadily building suspense make this an entertaining read for fans of YA paranormal stories with dark secrets and romance.

White Mountain is a small-town romance but different and dark. I really enjoyed the setting, it created a warm feeling while reading and the writing was easy to follow.
However, the pacing tends to drag, particularly in the middle, making it hard to stay fully engaged. The romance was sweet, but I found myself wanting more depth and tension between the main characters. I was hunting for the dark aspect & never really felt it.
Overall, this was an easy read with a lovely atmosphere, but it left me wanting more spark between the characters.

An atmospheric wonderland of a read 😍
Dare I even say, this may have been even better than book 1, which was a hard act to follow but WOW 😍 WOWOWOW. Ruby's writing style is magical, her character development is second to none, and the world building was just phenomenal!
We had every question answered in Book 2, and it did not dissapoint. I am so sad it is over, what a beautiful duology, but Ruby wrapped it up in a nice little package and ending for us.
Can't wait to read more of Ruby's books in the future 🥰🫶🏻

I will start out by saying I didn't like this book and I did listen to the first one after I was granted this one as an ALC. Teenagers who are turned into vampires but there not the typical vampires. It was just too young for me.

The first book got me out of a slump but this could’ve put me in one lol it was so boring. Too much slow burn romance and not enough plot and action. Also I don’t care for opi and this book is mainly about her and Eli.

I read Black River as part of my book club a few months ago, so I was really excited to receive the arc for the audiobook. I really enjoyed the first half of the book, but unfortunately lost it after that. It became needlessly confusing and a bit boring. I dunno, it could just be that I'm not as into YA as I used to be, but this book just wasn't for me.

I really enjoyed this! I thought it was a good way to wrap up the duology, and I liked getting to see how everything played out for these characters. The middle did drag just a little, but things picked up toward the end, and I was happy with how the story came together.
I listened to this one on audio, and Geraldine Hakewill did a fantastic job with the narration! She really brought the story to life and made it an enjoyable listening experience.
Overall, a solid conclusion to the duology!

This duology is such a winner for me. I love the mash up of paranormal, sci fi and romance!
White Mountain brings us back to Black River, not long after the events of the first book, but we get a stronger focus on Opi (Ophelia) this time, Dusty's sister, while still following along with Dusty, Will, Eli and other characters from Black River.
Opi felt really interesting to me because she has the younger sibling mentality, feeling a bit overlooked, a bit sheltered (babied / overprotected) which is not something I can really relate to as an eldest daughter but I found so interesting to read, and I found myself feeling really sympathetic towards her, because yes, her sister and her friends got some super powers with their vampiric curse and Opi is just struggling with her blood lust, she can't find the upside. I really appreciated Opi's character development, the way it felt gradual and earned, and the way the romance storyline progressed in a way that felt so natural.
The continuation of JD's story was such a fun little side quest - the visions and the developments gave Twilight vibes, and I loved any little glimpse we got of what was happening and where it was going. I found myself unexpectedly in the feels by the way this wrapped up.
I love a story that leaves you wondering a bit, and White Mountain does that in my opinion - the way things went with the origin of their curse, I'm still not sure whether this is paranormal, sci fi or something else entirely, in origin (I'm sorry if this feels too vague but I don't want to spoil!)
Overall, I would definitely recommend this series and I look forward to seeing what else Ruby Jean Cottle writes!

Quick Summary

I devoured the first one & this one was no exception!!
I loved where this story went & how we got to follow Opi more & how bad she struggled along the way. How she eventually found herself & finally found herself in the world.

Last year, Black River became my first 5-star read of the year. So when I tell you I had been WAITING for White Mountain… I need you to understand the expectations were HIGH.
And now apparently I’m expected to accept that this is a duology??? No. ❤️
Ruby has said she wants to write more within this universe, but I don't just want more from this universe. My body craves another 2 books with these characters specifically, at a minimum, plus 5 in an expanded universe.
One of my favourite things about White Mountain is how naturally it progresses from the first book. Black River was very much about Dusty, her changing body, her mind, her relationships, and that strange YA liminal space between girl and monster, love and survival. Her transformation was both physical and emotional, and I ached for her. But White Mountain gets to ask: okay, you've changed. Now what? Plus a shift to other characters.
We get to explore what Dusty and her sister Ophelia can actually do now, while the world around her gets bigger, darker and considerably more dangerous. We also FINALLY start getting answers about what's actually happening, which naturally only made me want about seventeen more answers.
I also loved exploring Dusty's relationship with Ophelia. Dusty absolutely crosses into overbearing territory with the way she mothers her little sister, but after everything they've been through? I get it. Her fear of losing Ophelia is palpable, even when that fear starts affecting the way she treats her.
And amongst all of that, we've got new supernatural threats, vampires, murder, romance, secrets, shifting loyalties and something VERY questionable happening beneath a mountain. Basically, I ate this up.
White Mountain takes everything I loved about Black River and expands it without losing the strange, intimate, slightly unsettling heart that made me fall in love with this story in the first place. My only complaint?
There aren't another five books waiting for me.
Ruby, please rectify this immediately. 🖤
