I think I might've liked this even more than book one.
As the final book in the Black River duology, this one definitely delivered on a lot of things I was hoping for.
First of all… the romance.
OMG I did not fully see it coming, but I was rooting for them from the very beginning. And this time? I actually felt it. The tension, the build-up, the care between them… it was done so much better compared to book one with Dusty and Will. Still a sloooow burn, but a GOOD one at least.
Plot-wise, I liked that we get more answers about what’s actually going on. The story expands and things get darker. That said, I did feel like some parts of the plot were a bit unclear or not fully developed at times, which made a few moments slightly confusing.
Character-wise… Ophelia was such a standout for me in this book. I loved her. Was she a bit reckless and bratty at times? Yes. But also… she is still a teenager, so it made sense.
Now… Dusty.
I get it. I really do. She’s worried about her sister. But oh my god… let the girl breathe. She was definitely the most frustrating character for me in this installment. ( I felt like they switched places, in book 1 Ophelia had her moments, in book 2 Dusty, lol ^^)
Complaints aside, I still really enjoyed this. I picked it up as soon as I got it and it kept me hooked until the end.

But this one event has Dusty asking her friend Eli to watch over Opi. Dusty fears for others and Opi's safety, but this constant hovering is angering Opi.
Eli and Opi clash as they spend so much time together, and all the while another 'changed' White Mountain teenager is changing others, putting them all at risk.
When the police begin investigating a body found at the roots of a felled tree, tension rises among Opi, Dusty and their friends. Can they keep their secret? The reason behind everything is slowly revealed and they must all work together to fight the force that changed their lives.

I enjoyed reading this episode in Opi's point of view, but I enjoyed the surprise of Black River better. This novel however, pulls everything together, including the reason for their mother's disappearance when they were young, what a rebel vampire is actually doing, and the force that has caused the changes in their lives.
Romance is a much bigger part of this episode, with Opi and Eli being the main focus of this thread. The increased tension with a police investigation makes White Mountain gripping, but I would describe this novel as a slow burn type of read with a satisfying conclusion.

Quick Summary
I was so excited to dive back into this world again, and getting the story through more of Opi’s POV made it even better. At first she felt very 'poor me,' but author Ruby was able develop her into such a strong, layered character which was genuinely amazing. The twists and turns caught me off guard in the best way, and the new relationships forming throughout the book were absolute perfection. The villain was crafted so well, the ending landed beautifully, and the found‑family elements were everything I love in a story.

I love Demon Fairy Opi (she's not literally one, you'll get it)!
For me this second part of the duology was better than the first in experience (more comfortable to read) and characters (which no more felt like a group of oh so "special" superheroes), but less attractive in plot (less of a logical line and strategy, mostly predictable events, but quite interesting to read anyway).
The way Dusty overcontrolled Opi was extremely annoying. I don't thing that kind of "care" for her sister did any good. And controlling more in the face of a coming danger sounds even worse. I guess that's another reason why I liked this book much more than the first — this one is Opi's and Black River was Dusty's. And Dusty's so annoying in comparison.
The story about the mother was kinda strange. I don't understand the logic in characters' actions in that moment. It just seemed like the author wanted the story to be told somehow and shoved it there failing to build any logical connection, like an NPC was filling in the needed info. And there were other moments like this later. Sadly turned out to be just for another plot moments, not character interactions/development and whatever. A lot of scenes with side characters felt like we were there just to get some insights/steps into the plot, not the naturally flowing story.
Overall I liked it anyway, enjoyed reading. It had original worldbuilding despite the classical topic, characters I loved (most of them. Not Dusty though), and many other memorable details!

I was so invested into the romance between Opi and Eli, I absolutely loved their dynamic. The tension, the banter, the build-up, I loved every single aspect.
I particularly loved Opi’s character development, particularly how relatable it was. Like, yes I appreciate Dusty’s character development into someone who isn’t afraid to feel or face emotion. On the other hand though, Opi’s was about learning to come to terms with growth and changing into a different person with the underlying message that you shouldn’t become too comfortable being the person you are now because growth and changing yourself is an inevitable part of life. I think as a 21-year-old who is still trying to figure out who she is and wants to be, this character development hit me deeper and that’s why I loved the book so much.
However, towards the end, I did feel a little bit confused as to how the story was wrapping up. For example, I didn’t really understand that the shadow was gone until they actually explicitly stated it. Things like that made the ending a bit confusing. But I did really enjoy seeing Opi and Eli end up together. They will always be my favourite couple of the entire series!

This duology is such a winner for me. I love the mash up of paranormal, sci fi and romance!
White Mountain brings us back to Black River, not long after the events of the first book, but we get a stronger focus on Opi (Ophelia) this time, Dusty's sister, while still following along with Dusty, Will, Eli and other characters from Black River.
Opi felt really interesting to me because she has the younger sibling mentality, feeling a bit overlooked, a bit sheltered (babied / overprotected) which is not something I can really relate to as an eldest daughter but I found so interesting to read, and I found myself feeling really sympathetic towards her, because yes, her sister and her friends got some super powers with their vampiric curse and Opi is just struggling with her blood lust, she can't find the upside. I really appreciated Opi's character development, the way it felt gradual and earned, and the way the romance storyline progressed in a way that felt so natural.
The continuation of JD's story was such a fun little side quest - the visions and the developments gave Twilight vibes, and I loved any little glimpse we got of what was happening and where it was going. I found myself unexpectedly in the feels by the way this wrapped up.
I love a story that leaves you wondering a bit, and White Mountain does that in my opinion - the way things went with the origin of their curse, I'm still not sure whether this is paranormal, sci fi or something else entirely, in origin (I'm sorry if this feels too vague but I don't want to spoil!)
Overall, I would definitely recommend this series and I look forward to seeing what else Ruby Jean Cottle writes!

White Mountain is a small-town romance but different and dark. I really enjoyed the setting, it created a warm feeling while reading and the writing was easy to follow.
However, the pacing tends to drag, particularly in the middle, making it hard to stay fully engaged. The romance was sweet, but I found myself wanting more depth and tension between the main characters. I was hunting for the dark aspect & never really felt it.
Overall, this was an easy read with a lovely atmosphere, but it left me wanting more spark between the characters.

An atmospheric wonderland of a read 😍
Dare I even say, this may have been even better than book 1, which was a hard act to follow but WOW 😍 WOWOWOW. Ruby's writing style is magical, her character development is second to none, and the world building was just phenomenal!
We had every question answered in Book 2, and it did not dissapoint. I am so sad it is over, what a beautiful duology, but Ruby wrapped it up in a nice little package and ending for us.
Can't wait to read more of Ruby's books in the future 🥰🫶🏻

I really enjoyed the enemies to friends to lovers relationship with her and Eli, although it was the slowest of slowest burns.
The natural and sci-fi elements in this book were interesting and I think it could have been a trilogy.

I devoured the first one & this one was no exception!!
I loved where this story went & how we got to follow Opi more & how bad she struggled along the way. How she eventually found herself & finally found herself in the world.
It was a beautiful ending to the story :)

Last year, Black River became my first 5-star read of the year. So when I tell you I had been WAITING for White Mountain… I need you to understand the expectations were HIGH.
And now apparently I’m expected to accept that this is a duology??? No. ❤️
Ruby has said she wants to write more within this universe, but I don't just want more from this universe. My body craves another 2 books with these characters specifically, at a minimum, plus 5 in an expanded universe.
One of my favourite things about White Mountain is how naturally it progresses from the first book. Black River was very much about Dusty, her changing body, her mind, her relationships, and that strange YA liminal space between girl and monster, love and survival. Her transformation was both physical and emotional, and I ached for her. But White Mountain gets to ask: okay, you've changed. Now what? Plus a shift to other characters.
We get to explore what Dusty and her sister Ophelia can actually do now, while the world around her gets bigger, darker and considerably more dangerous. We also FINALLY start getting answers about what's actually happening, which naturally only made me want about seventeen more answers.
I also loved exploring Dusty's relationship with Ophelia. Dusty absolutely crosses into overbearing territory with the way she mothers her little sister, but after everything they've been through? I get it. Her fear of losing Ophelia is palpable, even when that fear starts affecting the way she treats her.
And amongst all of that, we've got new supernatural threats, vampires, murder, romance, secrets, shifting loyalties and something VERY questionable happening beneath a mountain. Basically, I ate this up.
White Mountain takes everything I loved about Black River and expands it without losing the strange, intimate, slightly unsettling heart that made me fall in love with this story in the first place. My only complaint?
There aren't another five books waiting for me.

We get to explore what Dusty and her sister Ophelia can actually do now, while the world around her gets bigger, darker and considerably more dangerous. We also FINALLY start getting answers about what's actually happening, which naturally only made me want about seventeen more answers.
I also loved exploring Dusty's relationship with Ophelia. Dusty absolutely crosses into overbearing territory with the way she mothers her little sister, but after everything they've been through? I get it. Her fear of losing Ophelia is palpable, even when that fear starts affecting the way she treats her.
And amongst all of that, we've got new supernatural threats, vampires, murder, romance, secrets, shifting loyalties and something VERY questionable happening beneath a mountain. Basically, I ate this up.
White Mountain takes everything I loved about Black River and expands it without losing the strange, intimate, slightly unsettling heart that made me fall in love with this story in the first place. My only complaint?
There aren't another five books waiting for me.
