There's merry mischief aplenty in Donna Andrews' latest avian-themed Christmas mystery!
The Christmas season is underway in Caerphilly. The members of the Hollingsworth clan, Meg’s mother’s family, are beginning to arrive in force, and Mother has several special projects underway this year. One is the playhouse she’s having built for Brynn, her two-year-old granddaughter. Brynn is a bright, lively child who loves animals, especially a wounded jay that she and Meg are trying to rehabilitate. She’s also hoping to play matchmaker and set up her cousin with an old friend of hers who was recently widowed.
But all is not going smoothly in Caerphilly. Someone vandalizes the playhouse and sets a dangerous trap that injures and could have killed Mother. She reveals that she has been getting nasty anonymous letters, and it’s obvious that someone is targeting her. Meg realizes she has to do something to figure out who could possibly have it in for her mom.
Meg juggles holiday preparations and celebrations while investigating these potential enemies – not to mention helping repair the damaged playhouse, taking her turn at nursing the wounded jay, and trying to coax Mother’s elderly cousin into a reunion with his long-lost love. When one of Meg’s suspects is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the family rejoices that Mother is out of danger. But Meg isn’t quite sure they’re out of the woods just yet.

The Meg Langslow series is a must read for cozy mystery fans! I'm not generally one to binge read a series but when I started this series I was reading them 4, 5, 6 at a time before switching over to read something else. Even then I was only trying to delay getting caught up so I wouldn't run out of Megs to read.
Here's what I like in a cozy series:
-- Lovable main character who does something interesting as a career (check, Meg is darling and she's a blacksmith!)
-- Inner circle with interesting characters (Meg's family: dad is an adoptee who became a doctor and eventually finds his birth parents, mom is a tyrant really but no one notices because she's basically the queen, brother is a former lawyer turned game designer, sister is not really in the picture for some reason, extended family- so so many extended family members Meg always has someone to turn to no matter what she needs)
-- Unique setting but Mayberry-esque in that almost everyone is sweet as pie (Caerphilly is Utopia basically, everyone there - except the suspects of course - is kind and caring and they all take care of one another)
--Cool residence for the MC (Meg and Michael found a huge old house in the country and they live there with their twin sons and Meg's cousin Rose Noir and her nephew Kevin and whoever happens to be in town at the moment, it has a huge kitchen and a well-stocked library, and plenty of room for a thousand Christmas trees)
-- Appealing love interest (check! Michael is gorgeous and kind of famous and when Meg meets him she thinks he's gay so she just befriends him without fawning over him and because of that [and because she's awesome] he falls in love with her, no love triangles, no drama, just a happy couple)
--Great mysteries (check, check, and check!)
Andrews is kind of famous for her Christmas mysteries. About every other book in this series is a Christmas themed mystery. This one surrounds the holiday show home (which if I'm not mistaken we've seen in other Christmas books in this series too).
In Jay to the World all the relatives have descended on Meg's home and her parent's farm next door and they all get in on the festivities. Everyone is helping to fix Brynne's playhouse, which was destroyed by someone who may also have tried to kill Meg's mother (I don't think we know her name, she's just Mother), they're also trying to help Mother recreate decorations for the show home after the hundreds of angels she ordered were stolen and destroyed by another show home decorator. Meanwhile, in a situation reminiscent of baby Jesus, Mother and the local women's shelter are trying to help a pregnant woman named Thea escape her abusive husband and start a new life.
There is always SO MUCH going on in these books, I have no idea how Andrews has managed to do so much with her characters without ever repeating the same situations. Most authors lose steam after a while and the stories lose something, but Andrews has kept this series fresh and exciting for 40 books. The series has evolved a lot, the characters have grown and changed and we've met new characters to keep things fresh.
If you haven't read this series, you really should. You won't be disappointed!

Jay to the World is the 40th book in Donna Andrews’ A Meg Langslow Mystery series, and it’s just as fresh, fun, and exciting as the very first book in the series.
Donna Andrews is one of my top favorite authors. The plots she constructs are meticulously written, and something always surprises me. I adore the characters! I want to live in Caerphilly and be friends with Meg, Michael, Rose Noir, Rob, Mother, Dr. Blake, Cordelia…the list goes on.
The books in this series always take place in just a few days’ time. But Meg leads such a full and busy life it feels to me as if she’s lived through a month! And Christmas this year is no exception - her house is already full with visiting relatives. Meg’s day starts early with helping to save an injured blue jay that hit the window. Her 2 year old niece Brynn begs her and Rose Noir to make the “boojay” all better. Then a call from Meg’s mother asking her to come over to see the destruction someone wrought on the playhouse Mother commissioned to have made for Brynn ends with a terrible prank that could have killed her. And it turns out Mother has been receiving anonymous, hateful emails.
So adding to Meg’s list is to find the culprits, ride herd on the designers working on the Christmas Designer Showcase house, discover who stole the 250 angels Mother had commissioned for the room she is decorating, coaxing Mother’s cousin Graham into reuniting with his former fiancee Wanda, who is also visiting, and making sure that an abusive husband does not find the location of the Women’s Shelter where his wife is hiding out.
I have several favorites in the series, and I have listened to them multiple times on audiobook. Jay to the World has now been added to my Favorite Meg Langslow Books list. (I think I’ve listened to Let it Crow! Let it Crow! Let it Crow! at least 30 or 40 times.) So I can’t wait for Jay to the World to be released in audiobook format as well. (The narrator of Meg’s books, Bernadette Dunne, is the BEST narrator I’ve ever heard, so check them out!)
So to wrap up this already long review, I can honestly say that I loved this book. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for giving me the chance to read an advanced copy of the book. I happily leave my honest opinion….and can’t wait for the next book!

In the latest Christmas time installment of the Meg Langslo series, the crime hits pretty close to home. Meg's mother suffers an attack one morning as she is going out to check on the progress of a Christmas present she is organizing for her granddaughter. How could this sweet older lady have any enemies that would want to harm her? Well, it turns out that she does, and Meg must discover which of them hurt her mother before they strike again with even more catastrophic consequences.
I just love these books, and especially the Christmas ones. I want to visit Meg's town and see all the Christmas lights and festive decorations that are described in every holiday story. There are so many fun and quirky characters populating these books that they are impossible not to love. I do have favorites, and it's sad when we don't get to spend as much time with some of them, but in this one, we get to see Meg's grandfather, her mother and father, and all kinds of aunts and cousins feature predominately. We also get to spend some time with Meg's 2-year-old niece who shows promise of being the star of many books to come. We even get to meet a new relative with charm, or maybe lack of it, all on his own.
The mystery in this one is refreshing because nobody dies. I think that helps this feel slightly more like an uplifting holiday read than some of the others; although, really, none of this series is terrible gruesome or upsetting. I always find it funny that the emergency number operator knows Meg by name every time she calls, which does seem to be an extreme number of times in this one.
Bottom line: Cozy mystery fans rejoice. This is another perfect installment in this series and will delight readers whether it's their first time with these characters or they've been following from the beginning.

It’s Christmastime in Caerphilly (again) and the Hollingsworth clan is descending on the town in droves. Meg’s mother, Margaret, has the family busy building a playhouse for granddaughter, Brynn. A damper is thrown over the festivities when the playhouse is vandalized and a boobytrap set that was meant to kill Margaret. Escaping with minor injuries, Margaret finally reveals that over the past few months, she has received several threatening emails. She’s also been threatened by the husband of a woman that the local women’s shelter is helping start over with a new life that does not involve him. With Margaret sidelined, it falls to Meg to handle the family festivities, fix the playhouse, help the abused woman on the first leg of her journey, and oversee operations at the show house. When theft and vandalism happen at the show house, Meg realizes that her mother has more enemies than originally thought. Meg and the police are determined to figure out which of Margaret’s enemies is behind the attack before it ruins the holiday.
Meg’s mother has always come off as a bit overbearing and controlling, and it’s no surprise that she has several enemies determined to bring her down. The question is which of these enemies is determined to kill her. Unfortunately, I had the attempted murderer pegged from the beginning and that spoiled some of my enjoyment of the book. The big confrontation with the guilty party was rushed, fell flat, and lacked emotion considering what happened. The investigation into theft and vandalism at the show home was much more interesting than the attempted murder. Overall, it was a decent, well-written story.

Not only has she had a series last for forty books, but every book is still delightful and fresh and just a joy to read! I feel like I could almost copy and paste my previous reviews. I always enjoy a new Meg mystery and this one was no exception. The characters, the town, the way everyone helps everyone out - it really is all just such fun to read about! This year’s Christmas book focuses on figuring out who could want to harm Meg’s mother. I really enjoyed it and I felt vindicated for the Langslows’ at seeing all those not so nice people get what they deserved. There are just so many parts of this series I enjoy and I hope Donna Andrews will keep writing for a very long time!

There are several suspects in this case. While I did guess the identity of the murderer, Donna Andrews still provides a twist at the end that leaves you surprised, even when you already know whodunit.
I've read several cozy mysteries with large casts and chaotic plotlines that just don't work. Jay to the World also features a large cast and multiple chaotic plotlines, but with Meg Langslow as the ringmaster. The chaos feels normal instead of forced. Donna Andrews is an author who excels at making chaos work for her. The only thing I hate about this book is that I’m going to have to wait another year for the next installment in the series to come out!

Christmas time in Caerphilly and Meg's family is in the thick of it. Michael is in New York with drama students, the usual family feasting is set to commence, Meg's mom is contributing to the design home, and they are all pitching in to create a Christmas masterpiece for Brynn, Rob and Delaney's daughter. Meg is on the phone with her mother, trying to coordinate all the things, when she hears an exclamation, a scream, and then nothing. Relieved to find her mother injured but alive, Meg gets to add "find out who destroyed the playhouse" and "find out who tried to kill Mother" to her list of tasks. Along with many of the things her mother needed to get done.
Nothing brings joy and comfort quite like a Meg Langslow book. This book did not disappoint at all. My only question is: how is Spike still alive? Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book.

Meg has plans for a VERY Merry Christmas with her family. But someone has other plans and it seems they involve her Mother. And those plans could be deadly. Can Meg keep her Mother and family safe and have the Christmas she was hoping for? Who’s on Santa’s naught list this year and can Meg keep her family safe? That’s exactly what Meg intends to find out.
This is such a fun series. I love the care and love for the animal and family in each and every entry. It’s a close second to the solid and cleverly written mystery in each entry. If you haven’t read a book in the series yet, no worries. They read fine as stand-alone and leave you plenty of books to go back and binge on when you are done.

Jay to the World: A Meg Langslow Mystery by Donna Andrews is a delight as is every Christmas tale she has written, in spite of the villains we encounter throughout. It is one of my favorites of the series, and part of that is because I love watching Meg and her crew maneuver to take down the bad guys. Little Brynn brings a touch of holiday magic, and EdithLinda adds even more humor to the family escapades.

I loved reading as Meg navigated family chaos and unraveled the threats against her mother.

Jay to the World by Donna Andrews is the latest in the Meg Langslow books and brings together all the favorite characters to solve some mysteries and bring the perpetrators to justice. When Meg's mother has her room she is decorating in the house donated for the project sabotaged, Meg and her many friends and relatives come to the rescue to find the perpetrator. Then the playhouse Meg's mother is doing for her granddaughter is graffitied they are back to find out why and who. This is another fun book to read in the series with a fun cast of characters.

Donna Andrews’ cast of interesting characters, a setting dripping with Christmas joy, and an engaging plot made this book a very enjoyable read. July 22, 2026It’s hard to believe this i the 40th book in the Meg Langslow series. This one was another of the Christmas themed books and it was excellent. Meg’s mother is matchmaking and tied up with the Decorators House again. I particularly liked the regret Meg has that Michael is missing the holiday season, turns out the boys feel the same and results in a nice feel good ending.

A whirlwind of family and friends working together to uncover the source of vicious attacks on a much loved matriarch. Poor Meg never stopped running around organising but what a lovely family and town. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It's almost Christmas and Meg's huge extended family is beginning to gather. Unfortunately, someone is planning a not-so-merry Christmas for Meg's mom. One of the best Christmas mysteries I have read that also brings the heart of the season.

It is Christmas again, and Meg and her family are hosting another large extended family gathering. When a major present is vandalized, and so is Meg's mother's room in the annual show house, Meg springs into action. There is a lot going on, including a long-lost bridesmaid, several vindictive Garden Club members, and on-going danger to Meg's mother. But she sorts it out--along with the police, of course. Fun.
