Rate this book
It’s time for spirits to come out and play in the ninth Year-Round Christmas mystery by national bestselling author Vicki Delany.

It’s Halloween, and the townsfolk of Rudolph, New York, are donning masks and costumes for the Yuletide Inn’s grand fundraising gala to support the local hospital. Shop owner Merry Wilkinson has yet another treat to Her best friend, Vicky Casey, has a new cookbook set to publish. Vicky’s publishers, a prominent critic of her book, and a former opera star, rumored to have been involved with Merry’s mother, are all set to attend the gala.

As the drinks flow, the guests dance, and the canapes are served, things begin spiraling out of control. The book critic makes a scene, and tensions begin to rise. Then Merry realizes that she is not the only one who never actually paid for a gala ticket. But when someone drops dead after eating a cake pop from the lavish dessert buffet, everything comes to a head, and all eyes turn to Vicky, who made the treats. As it turns out, Vicky’s book might be doomed before it hits the shelves.

With her friend’s name and livelihood at stake and the fundraiser in serious danger, Merry must keep her wits about her. Surely she’s only imagining the ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge watching her from the shadows.

A perfect holiday blend. I was catching up on some NetGalley reads that were due this month -- all Christmas-themes, which I do think is too early but I will not miss a deadline. When I realized I never bought this book by Vicki Delany, I headed to the store and grabbed it... Autumn has just started and the town of Rudolph is getting in the swing of Christmas planning. I found myself enjoying the gala, the cookbook launch, and the romances blooming all around. Good dialog. Interesting mystery. Happy endings.

Merry’s best friend, Vicky Casey, has been working on a cookbook for the last couple of entries in this series, and it is finally coming out. But the night before the official book launch, the annual fundraiser for the local hospital is happening. It’s a big gala at the Yuletide Inn, and everyone is there, including people from out of town. One of those out-of-town guests is Cynthia, an online reviewer (those evil people!) who has panned Vicky’s new book. As the evening is winding down, Cynthia falls over and then dies on the way to the hospital. If Cynthia didn’t die of natural causes, what happened to her?

I debated about continuing the series before ultimately deciding to continue via the library. Sadly, I once again found it average. The pacing was off, especially in the middle when some subplots took over. While I like the series regulars, I want to see some character growth. I feel like things are staying too much the same. While I wasn’t bothered by the fact that the cozy Christmas vibes weren’t as plentiful due to it being a Halloween set book, I didn’t like the paranormal element the book introduced, especially since the book relied on it too much. We do have three delicious sounding recipes at the end. I’m debating if I want to read any more books in this series.

It’s Halloween and a huge charity gala in Rudolph has enticed not only most of the town’s citizens but guests from as far away as New York city to don costumes and masks to celebrate the upcoming fright night. Among the guests are store owner Merry Wilkerson and her best friend, Vicky Casey, who is the newly published author of a cookbook as well as Vicky’s agent and publisher.

The gala is in full swing when one of the guests, a woman from New York city collapses after eating a cake pop made by Vicky. When it is later learned the woman had written a negative review of Vicky’s cookbook, she seems the most likely suspect. Merry is convinced her friend is innocent and she is determined to uncover the real culprit but, with so many strangers in town, that won’t be so easy. It will, however, be very dangerous as Merry soon finds out.

‘Tis the Season to be Scary is book 9 of A Year-Round Mystery Christmas
Mystery series by Vicki Delaney and it is one fun, clever, and spooky cozy with a touch of the supernatural to prepare us for Halloween. The pace is even for most of the tale, giving the reader time to get reacquainted with regular characters in the case of long-time fans of the series and meet new ones including (maybe) the ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge while giving new readers a chance to feel at home in Rudolph. And if an entertaining Halloween mystery with a Dickensian Christmas ghost isn’t enough, there are some very delicious sounding recipes at the end to try including the cake pops…sans cyanide of course.

I've officially reached the point where I don't even blink anymore when someone dies in Rudolph. A woman keels over after eating a cake pop at a Halloween fundraiser? Yeah, that tracks. Honestly, the only shocking part is that everyone still RSVPs to these town events. If I lived here and someone invited me to a charity gala, I'd fake my own death just to stay home. Which, ironically, is probably safer.

This time poor Vicky should be celebrating because her cookbook is finally launching. Instead, she gets front-row seats to every author's worst nightmare. Her biggest food critic decides to show up already looking like she's been marinating in bad decisions, starts making scenes, and then promptly drops dead after eating one of Vicky's desserts. Suddenly the cookbook launch has been replaced by a homicide investigation, and Merry goes into full "absolutely not, we're fixing this" mode before the police have finished putting up the tape.

I adore Merry because she's never reckless enough to make me yell at the book, but she's also physically incapable of minding her own business once one of her people is in trouble. The woman hears, "Please let the police handle it," and somehow translates it into, "Could you casually interview everyone at this party while pretending you're just admiring the decorations?" It's honestly a gift.

And speaking of this party...these guests are a disaster. Between publishers, opera singers, cookbook drama, critics with decades-old grudges, politicians, random freeloaders who somehow all got free tickets, and enough old New York connections to populate an off-Broadway reunion special, I started looking at literally everyone sideways. Every conversation felt like someone smiling politely while quietly thinking, "I have hated you since 1998."

The spooky little paranormal thread continues to be one of my favorite weird quirks of this series. Merry keeps catching glimpses of what looks suspiciously like Ebenezer Scrooge hanging around in the shadows, and instead of feeling like the book suddenly wandered into ghost territory, it somehow just...fits. Rudolph is already a town where Christmas basically has municipal status, so apparently Dickens characters clocking in for Halloween doesn't even crack the top five weirdest things happening this week.

I will admit this wasn't my favorite visit to Rudolph. About halfway through I realized we were circling the same group of suspects over and over, and I was mentally begging someone, anyone, to spill a new secret. The payoff is satisfying, but it takes its sweet holiday time getting there. I never wanted to quit reading, I just kept looking at the page count thinking, "Come on, somebody confess to something."

That said, spending time with this cast is still like coming home for the holidays. Merry, Alan, Vicky, Aline, Mrs. D'Angelo, Jackie...I've been hanging out with these people long enough that seeing them again feels like catching up with the messy relatives you actually like. Even when the mystery isn't firing on all cylinders, the characters keep me invested because I genuinely care what fresh nonsense they've wandered into this time.

This series has become pure comfort reading for me. It's peppermint mocha in book form. Sure, Rudolph has an alarmingly high murder rate for a town built around Christmas cheer, but somehow it still feels cozy enough that I'd happily book a weekend there...provided I packed snacks and avoided all public buffets.

This one lands at 3.5 stars for me. Not my favorite stop in Rudolph, but even an average trip to Christmas Town is still more fun than most places where people aren't getting poisoned by festive desserts.

Whodunity Award: For Proving That the Most Dangerous Thing at a Charity Gala Wasn't the Open Bar...It Was the Cake Pop

Huge thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the ARC. Thanks for once again convincing me that holiday baking is a high-risk profession and that if someone offers me free dessert at a fundraiser, I'm checking for detectives before I take a bite.

When one lives in a town called Rudolph, Christmas-themed celebrations and life are unsurprisingly the thing, but this time the ho-ho-hos are mixed with the nasty trick of murder when a caterer’s treats for a Halloween charity gala poison an obnoxious guest. Vicki Delany’s cozy mysteries are not new territory for me, but this particularly series with small town and holiday themes drew me in for a first venture to amateur sleuth Merry in her Upstate New York town of Rudolph.

Tis the Season to Be Scary is the ninth standalone entry in the series. I had no trouble diving in for the first time and enjoyed meeting the regular characters and encountering the setting while getting the mystery.

Merry’s excited for her friend Vicky. Vicky’s cookbook is getting ready to be published and her food is starring for the inn’s Halloween-themed charity gala to support the hospital. It’s a lovely night of fun costumes, glitz and spooky glamour on the night the veil between the spiritual and physical is thinnest- did Merry just spot the spirit of Scrooge? Lots of important guests are visiting from city opera stars, to politicians, and to a food critic who is decidedly critical of Vicky’s food right before perishing after eating one of Vicky’s cake pops.

Merry is worried for her friend, but also others as she digs in and works to find who did the deed. Vicky might have a motive, but Merry uncovers proof that several do. Meanwhile, her Santa Claus zen dad is coming a little unraveled at the edges and her mom is being tempted back to the opera and New York City. She needs a few tricks up her sleeve to get to the truth in this Halloween caper.

Tis the Season to Be Scary hit the right beat for a holiday-themed small town cozy mystery. Its been a bit since I read one and I was not disappointed. Merry was an engaging character from the start- she gate crashed the party without invitation and has a finger on the pulse of things. Merry is observant and capable. I was right behind her efforts to figure out what happened. I got a kick out of her dad who doesn’t just dress up like Santa, but is Santa personified. The Christmas vibe of the town was tempered with the Halloween celebrations which was a nice backdrop. This is a cozy through and through, but I liked the way there was a spike of danger when it got to the climax and the stakes were higher for that brief time.

Now, that I’ve experienced Tis the Season to Be Scary, I think it will be fun to go back for the earlier holiday-themed mysteries and meet more of the quirky population and Merry’s adventures in Rudolph. Look no further for a holiday cozy mystery for this fall or a nice mash of Christmas with other.

Does it sound like fun to live in a small town that celebrates Christmas year-round? Maybe not if it's the town of Rudolph, New York. Murders do seem to keep happening there. Merry, whose father plays Santa Claus, seems to find herself involved snooping, er, investigating them. Don't get me wrong. I find myself liking Merry, not to mention the regulars of this series, but, man, they do attract some quirky, not to mention occasionally murderous visitors. In this case, with Merry's best friend Vicky celebrating the release of her first published cookbook, the death of Vicky's harshest critic at the hospital gala after eating one of Vicky's cake pops means it's almost inevitable Merry would be seriously involved in trying to find the true killer. Never fear, recipe fans. A murder didn't detour the inclusion of recipes. Grin.

There are quite a few suspects, too. Despite the blurb, I never felt like Vicky was considered a serious suspect, but that didn't mean there were many others to look into. As usual, Rudolph has managed to gather quite a few guests for the heavily publicized hospital fundraiser. Let's see, besides the expected publishers and agent, there are a pair of opera singers with one hoping to lure Merry's mother back to New York to perform with him, ambitious gala organizers, small town ambitions, wannabe politicians, cookbook fans, and, uh, was that a ghost? Why is Merry convinced she's seeing a ghost of Scrooge? I mean, despite the location, it's the Halloween season, not Dickens' Christmas. Well, she is told a ghost story and that, combined with lore of Halloween Eve being a night when the veil between living and dead is thinnest, she is spooked. Of the many faces, which is the murderer, not to mention how does one explain Merry's odd sightings. The tension increases with a mysterious car chase and, well, an even more mysterious rescue of sorts. Good thing Alan was home to help soothe nerves.

Bottom line, without revealing more of this fun albeit occasionally slow moving tale, I enjoyed my virtual visit to Rudolph. It was fun to see Merry's father, who might as well be Santa, slightly unsettled, must admit, although he retained his Santa Claus calm. Well, mostly. I chuckled early on when Merry told her dog to watch the place as she left the house as that is an echo of what I told my dog. The touch of paranormal was unexpected giving the identification of the otherworldly spirit as Scrooge appearing, but added an interesting element. I have to admit to thinking I had it solved, only to be proven wrong, so have fun seeing if you can figure it out. It actually all made sense in the end. Thanks #CrookedLaneBooks for the early peek into how Rudolph's finest celebrate a spooks and goblins day while clinging to its Christmas identity.

It is always fun to visit America's Christmas town, even if this time they are celebrating Halloween. Although we start this tale with a wonderful Halloween fundraiser at the Yuletide Inn for the local hospital, never fear Christmas fans, the next day will be a launch party for Merry's friend, Vicki's, new cookbook Holiday Recipes from America's Christmas Town! With her publisher's representatives there and her providing the dessert buffet for the fundraiser, it's still a big night for Vicki. Everyone is enjoying the party, including Merry and Alan, until a guest at the Inn keels over after eating a plate of Vicik's desserts. At first, everyone assumed a heart attack or allergy until the guest died, and we learned a cake pop was poisoned! Come along as Merry tries to clear Vicki while attempting to help Detective Simmonds without getting herself into trouble. Fortunately, she has a little help from an unexpected Halloween guest! Book Review: ’Tis the Season to Be Scary by Vicky Delany

Rating: ★★★★☆

What a fun, spooky mystery! I also have to mention how cute the cover is—it really fits the Halloween-meets-cozy-mystery vibe.

The story takes place in Rudolph, New York, where everyone is dressing up for a big Halloween fundraiser at the Yuletide Inn. Merry Wilkinson is excited because her best friend, Vicky Casey, has a cookbook coming out, and several important people from the publishing world will be at the event. Unfortunately, the night quickly turns sour when a food critic causes trouble, tensions start building, and a guest dies after eating one of the desserts.

Since Vicky made the treats, suspicion falls on her almost immediately. Merry is determined to clear her friend’s name, especially with Vicky’s cookbook and career on the line. To make things even creepier, Merry keeps catching glimpses of what looks like Ebenezer Scrooge watching from the shadows.

This was a really enjoyable read. I liked the Halloween setting, the small-town atmosphere, and the way the mystery unfolded. The characters were easy to like, and the story had a nice balance of suspense, humor, and spooky moments. I did guess a few things along the way, but I still had a great time seeing everything come together.

Overall, this was a charming and entertaining mystery, and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series.

"'Tis the Season to Be Scary (A Year-Round Christmas Mystery Book 9)" by Vicki Delany is indeed part of the Year-Round Christmas Mystery series, despite the very different cover art. I really wish publishers would stop changing cover art style midway through a series. I honestly didn't even realize this was the same series as the first ones until a couple pages in and was feeling confused at why it was sounding familiar. Then I noticed the book series wiggled in at the top of the cover. Not the time to be realizing it. If I had recognized it as part of the series right away I would have been stared it months ago. It looked like a new series and I wanted to wait to start it not knowing.

Overall, the story runs pretty much as this series usually does. The characters are all still up to their usual activities. It's just October and Halloween time. Holly is pretty sure she's seeing a ghost and they seem to have attached themselves to her. At least they're there whenever something big goes down. Like the death that links her best friend as a potential suspect.

Between the cover switch up and the Halloween take in a primary Christmas themed cozy mystery, it's feeling like cheap tricks to shake up a series longer than it should go on. How about, wrap it up with a final book that gives Holly a winter wedding.

another wonderful installment.

Rudolph, the Christmas village in upstate New York is always ready for all holidays. The town comes together for a fundraiser to benefit the hospital and all are having a wonderful time, until one of the attendees, who also happens to be be an amateur food critic dies. As Merry is pulled into the mystery, she gets unexpected help from the great beyond.... maybe the book should be called Merry and the help from the veil.

The book and characters are well written, and the mystery has you guessing as to connections and motives.

One of my favorite series from Ms. Delany.

I always enjoy returning to Rudolph and spending time with Merry and Vicky. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t get the usual trip to Muddle Harbor for breakfast, but the family drama with Merry’s dad and Jean Claude was unexpected and interesting.

The mystery was solid, and I wasn’t sure who the killer could be, so I enjoyed following the investigation. And once again, Jackie managed to give me a few eye rolls!

Back in Rudolph—yes, that Rudolph where Christmas is everything—you’d think the holidays would be the only thing on everyone’s mind. But this time, Halloween is taking center stage.

The town is getting ready for its annual Halloween Gala fundraiser, and everyone who’s anyone is there. While Merry and her friends are enjoying the costumes, festive fun, and all the spooky vibes, the night takes a deadly turn when one of the guests is poisoned. To make matters even worse, Merry’s best friend is the one catering the event, leaving her caught up in the middle of the investigation.

This was such a fun, cozy mystery that was perfect for kicking off spooky season. I loved trying to piece together the clues alongside Merry, and the twists kept me guessing until the end. The little bits of Halloween folklore mixed with the charm of Rudolph made this a great blend of spooky and cozy. It reminded me that even a town known for Christmas can have a few secrets hiding in the shadows.

If you’re looking for a light, festive mystery with Halloween vibes, this is definitely one to add to your fall TBR. 🎃🍂

Tis the Season to Be Scary by Vicki Delany was a cute and entertaining Halloween mystery.

Merry and the folks in Rudolph, New York, are getting ready for Halloween and a gala benefiting the local hospital. Merry is also preparing Mrs. Claus’ Treasures for Vicky’s cookbook launch, with Vicky’s agent and publishers coming from New York City. But after Vicky argues with a woman who left her a bad online review, the woman is found dead. Could a cake pop Vicky made for the gala have been poisoned?

I also enjoyed the little bit of drama between Merry’s dad and Jean-Claude, her mom’s singing partner. The mystery and the Halloween festivities made this a fun read for the spooky season.

This is Book of the Year-Round Christmas Mysteries, and I was just as entertained as the first time I read this series. The characters are likeable and you just want to spend time with them.

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the chance to read this story and give my opinion.

Tis the Season to Be Scary is a wonderfully spirited addition to Vicki Delany’s Year‑Round Christmas mysteries — a story that blends Halloween mischief with Rudolph’s signature festive charm, all wrapped in that cosy‑but‑curious tone the series does so well.

By the ninth instalment, Merry Wilkinson feels like an old friend, and watching her navigate the Yuletide Inn’s Halloween fundraising gala is pure delight. The setup is irresistible: costumes, cocktails, a glittering guest list, and the added excitement of her best friend Vicky’s soon‑to‑launch cookbook. There’s a lovely sense of celebration in the air… right up until the evening begins to unravel.

Delany captures the shift beautifully. A book critic causing a scene, simmering tensions among the guests, and Merry’s dawning realisation that she isn’t the only one who slipped into the gala without a ticket — it all creates a deliciously uneasy undercurrent beneath the festivities. And then comes the cake pop. One bite, one collapse, and suddenly the party’s sparkle turns sharp, with suspicion landing squarely on Vicky, whose treats were meant to be the highlight of the night.

What follows is classic Merry: steady, observant, and fiercely loyal. With her friend’s reputation on the line and the fundraiser teetering on disaster, she throws herself into the mystery with a mix of determination and warmth. The hint of the supernatural — that fleeting, possibly imagined glimpse of Ebenezer Scrooge in the shadows — adds a playful, atmospheric touch without tipping the story into whimsy.

The charm of Rudolph is ever‑present: the community spirit, the holiday‑infused setting, the gentle humour threaded through even the tensest moments. Yet Delany never lets the stakes feel trivial. The blend of cosy comfort and genuine danger is handled with a deft, confident hand.

Festive, clever, and lightly spooked in all the right ways, Tis the Season to Be Scary is a delightful seasonal mystery — perfect for readers who like their holidays with a dash of danger and their sleuthing served warm.

🚨 SPOILER ALERT: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I am giving 'Tis the Season to Be Scary by Rose Delaney a middle-of-the-road 3-star review. ⭐⭐⭐
This holiday-infused cozy mystery brings a unique mashup of spooky Halloween energy and festive Christmas charm straight to your Kindle screen!
ARC Disclosure: Thank you so much to NetGalley and the author for providing an early digital review copy (eARC) of this book! All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The Review
'Tis the Season to Be Scary is a fun, lighthearted cozy mystery that offers a highly unique seasonal blend. Rose Delaney sets up an atmospheric, small-town backdrop where the spooky elements of October seamlessly collide with the festive cheer of December. The premise itself is incredibly creative, and the writing maintains a breezy, easy-to-read flow. However, while it was an enjoyable holiday escape that delivered exactly what it promised on the surface, the emotional core didn't quite resonate with me. It was a perfectly fine, completed read, but ultimately felt just "okay" by the time the final page turned.
The Good
The sheer creativity of the setting is easily the best part of this book! If you love a good autumn-to-winter aesthetic crossover, the atmospheric blend of pumpkin patches and snowy pine trees is incredibly cozy and fun. The pacing is quick, making it a very easy book to fly through in a couple of sittings. The pet companions featured in the story—especially the adorable dog and cat dynamics highlighted on the cover—add a wonderful layer of warmth and lighthearted humor to the small-town mystery.
The Not So Good
Unfortunately, I struggled to fully connect with the story on a deeper level. Even though the plot moved along well and the cozy atmosphere was definitely there, something about the execution just didn't quite grab me. The characters and their relationships felt a bit surface-level, making it difficult to feel truly invested in the outcome of the mystery or the romantic tension. I finished the book, but it left a fairly mild impression overall.

Genre: Cozy Mystery 🏷️ Publisher name: Crooked Lane Books

Two books not a trend makes, however, I am curious. I read two books almost back to back from Vicki Delany, both released and to be released in a gap of about 3 months, and both follow sort of a same theme. Paranormal inclinations, the main character taking a slight backfoot in the investigation, mystery naturally solved by the MC but out of sheer coincidence, which even the MC agrees. I am, in no way saying there is any issue with that. Vicki Delany builds a beautiful story, as usual, and it had been tremendously enjoyable reading it. The similarities stood out though.
But over to the fun part now.

Merry is back and it is Halloween in Rudolph, New York. Mattie still has a massive crush on Diane Simmonds (I truly enjoy watching Mattie be a perfect dog around Detective Simmonds). There’s Santa, Alan’s toy workshop, Randall, and also a dead body. But to bring in Halloween ambience, there’s also a ghost. I enjoyed the inclusion of paranormal in a traditional mystery and how Merry keeps trying to explain it to her logical mind, eventually giving up, accepting that not everything can be explained. The story line was engaging, the additional characters coming in from outside to add chaos to Rudolph, was fun to read. Merry’s dad, Santa, is always fun whenever he’s in the scene. Jackie and Kyle are Jackie and Kyle as usual.

The one thing I always enjoy in this particular series is Vicki adding her namesake as Merry’s friend. I love the personality this book-character Vicki has and keep imagining this is how Vicki Delany would be too. This is a perfect Halloween book to curl up and read while trick or treating is going on outside, when the veil between the human world and spiritual world is thin.

Would I recommend it?
Yes, absolutely, mark your calendar for September 8th. Tis the Season to be Scary is a genuinely fun addition to the Year Round Christmas series, Halloween ambience and all. Merry’s crush-adjacent dynamic with Diane Simmonds through Mattie (a very good, very smitten dog) is worth the read alone. The paranormal thread is light-handed and never silly, and it lets Merry wrestle with her logical brain in a way that felt true to her character. Add this one to your TBR now, before the ghosts of Rudolph beat you to it.

'Tis the Season to Be Scary by Vicki Delany is the ninth book in the Year-Round Christmas mystery series and it’s just as much a fun read as the previous eight. It is a little different this time, as the story is centered around Halloween with a fundraiser for the hospital.

It is a busy time for Vicki as she is getting ready for the release of her cookbook. Unfortunately for Vicki, a critic of her cookbook shows up in town to make trouble for her. There are former opera singers arriving in town, one of whom (Jean Claude) has his sights set on Merry’s mom, Aline. Who is Eleanor, the new resident who is climbing her way to the top of the social ladder in Rudolph, NY?

During the gala, Cynthia, Vicky’s cookbook critic dies, and suspicion falls on Vicky. As Merry digs into Cynthia’s life, and that of her friend Renee, who decides to stay in town, she finds more questions than answers at first. The ending to this story was superbly done and I was surprised by the killer.

The Scrooge ghost aspect to this story was strange, but it was also fun to have Merry seeing him at times, where he seems to be warning her. Merry’s dad manages the Jean Claude situation with grace. I really thought Aline might go with him to perform in concerts.

Will Merry and Alan’s relationship move forward? I keep thinking they might live together or get married, but nope. It is fun to see Diane Simmonds in a social setting and not always in her role as detective. I hope Jack and Grace do not sell the inn to Greg, the investor. It seems if he gets his hands on it, the charm of the inn will be lost.

Love this series because the stories are engaging, the characters are interesting (Jackie, for instance), and the community really pulls together for events and each other. Who wouldn’t want to live there?

'Tis the Season to Be Scary: A Year-Round Christmas Mystery
by Vicki Delany
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read an advance copy of 'Tis the Season to Be Scary.

Who says Christmas towns can’t celebrate Halloween? 🎃 Rudolph may be known for all things festive and Christmasy, but this time around, it’s costumes, spooky decorations, and Halloween fun taking over the town.

Merry and her friends are enjoying the annual Halloween Gala when the evening takes a much darker turn after one of the guests is poisoned. And because Merry’s best friend is catering the event, she quickly finds herself pulled into the investigation.

I had such a fun time with this mystery! It had exactly the kind of cozy, small-town atmosphere I was looking for, while still giving us a murder to solve. I loved following the clues with Merry and trying to figure out who could be behind everything. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another twist would send me in a different direction.

The Halloween folklore was such a fun addition, too. I loved how it brought a little extra spooky atmosphere to the story without making it feel too dark. Paired with the Christmas charm of Rudolph, it made for such a unique setting.

This was also a great reminder that you don’t have to wait until December to visit Rudolph. 😉 There are clearly plenty of secrets hiding beneath all that holiday cheer.

Overall, 'Tis the Season to Be Scary was a charming and entertaining cozy mystery that perfectly blends Halloween fun with small-town Christmas charm. If you’re looking for something light, festive, and just a little spooky for your fall TBR, this one is worth picking up! 🎃🔍✨

4/5 stars: This is Delany's tenth entry in the Year-Round Christmas Mystery series which is a Cozy Mystery set in Rudolph, New York, a Christmas-themed tourist town. Featuring a gift and decor shop owner as she finds herself turning sleuth after her baker best friend's first cookbook's launch is threatened by a caustic food critic's poisoning death during a Halloween fundraising gala. With her friend’s name and livelihood at stake and the fundraiser's goals to raise fund for the local hospital in jeopardy, she'll have to use her wits to uncover as many suspects and clues she can. As she sorts through the many tangled webs surrounding the case, she can only hope she keeps imagining the ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge watching her from the shadows and not the killer preparing to strike again.

With plenty of twists and turns, Delany has crafted a mystery that deftly balances the suspects, clues and red herrings and will leave you pondering the whodunit until the final reveal. Witty and tons of fun, Delany's writing and character work are excellent; the main characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable with a secondary cast that are well crafted and uniquely voiced.

• Features a Christmas-themed small town that's chock full of Halloween/holiday cheer.
• For animal lovers: There are two great dogs in the book.
• Includes plenty of mouth watering food descriptions and delicious sounding recipes.

While you could read this as a stand-alone, you'll gain so much more by reading the series from the beginning; so be sure to pick up book one, Rest Ye Murdered Gentlemen.

This was such a fun, atmospheric cozy mystery! 🎃📚 I loved the combination of Halloween, Christmas, a small-town setting, a glamorous fundraising gala, secrets, ghosts, and of course… murder. It had that perfect cozy-mystery charm where everything looks festive and innocent on the surface, but you just know something sinister is brewing underneath.

Merry was a protagonist I genuinely enjoyed following. I loved watching her piece together the clues while trying to protect her best friend, especially when Vicky suddenly finds herself at the centre of the investigation after a guest dies from one of her cake pops. The mystery kept me curious about who was actually responsible and why.

The Year-Round Christmas concept also made this one stand out for me. A Halloween mystery wrapped in Christmas-themed festivities is such a wonderfully quirky combination, and the gala setting gave the story plenty of suspects, secrets, drama, and deliciously suspicious desserts. 🎃🎄🍰

I especially enjoyed the cozy small-town atmosphere, amateur sleuthing, murder mystery, friendship, and light paranormal elements. And that glimpse of Ebenezer Scrooge watching from the shadows? Definitely added an intriguing little touch!

Overall, this was a charming, entertaining read that would be perfect for anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with a festive twist, quirky characters, small-town secrets, and a murder to solve. A delightful little whodunit with plenty of atmosphere and just the right amount of spooky fun! 🕯️🔎

Tis the Season to Be Scary — Vicki Delany

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Christmas but make it MURDER

I really enjoyed this one! I've been loving cosy mysteries lately and apparently mixing murder with cute, cosy settings is becoming one of my favourite things to read

I loved the whole Christmas atmosphere throughout Tis the Season to Be Scary. There's just something about a cute festive setting mixed with a murder mystery that shouldn't work as well as it does... but it absolutely does.

This was such an easy and fun read. I loved following along with the mystery, picking up on all the little clues and trying to work out who was actually behind everything.

There were plenty of suspects, secrets and little twists that had me changing my mind about what I thought was happening. And of course the festive setting made everything feel that little bit more cosy despite the whole... murder situation

There were a couple of slower moments for me, but overall I had such a good time with this one.

Cosy, festive, mysterious and a little bit deadly exactly what I wanted

🎄 Christmas vibes
🔪 Murder mystery
🔎 Amateur sleuthing
☕ Cosy vibes
🎁 Festive setting
👀 Plenty of suspects
🤫 Secrets
🧩 Who did it?
🖤 Christmas

If you love cosy mysteries and Christmas books, this is such a fun way to get both in one.

A huge thank you to Vicki Delany, the publishing team and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review Tis the Season to Be Scary.

Tis the Season to be Scary is the 9th wonderful book in Vicki Delany's Year-Round Christmas Mystery series. The characters feel like friends and the cozy mystery kept me guessing. Merry Wilkinson owns Mrs Claus's Treasures in Randolph, NY where Christmas is celebrated year round even when it is Halloween! All of the shops are decorated for Halloween and are getting ready for the busy next couple of months. Merry is featuring her best friend Vicky's new cookbook. The Yuletide Inn is hosting a gala to raise money for the hospital. Merry's mom Aline is on the committee so she gives Merry and her boyfriend Alan complimentary tickets. Newcomer to town, Eleanor Hammond is the coordinator of the gala and is making the gala very glamorous. Vicky's publisher is hosting an event the following evening to promote the cookbook. The publishers and editor attend the gala. Unfortunately a lady who has posted a bad review of the cookbook and has been vocal in her dislike also attends the gala and causes a scene. When a death occurs at the gala and a cake pop seems to be the cause, Merry and Vicky need to find the killer before Vicky's cookbook becomes a casualty. The characters make this such an enjoyable cozy mystery. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books and I voluntarily leave this review.

A Year-Round Christmas Mystery, book 9

A cozy mystery

In a few words:

It’s Halloween and the forks of Rudolph all decked up in their costumes are celebrating at the Yuletide Inn, a grand fundraising gala in support of the local hospital. As drinks flow, the guests dance and canapés are served…. then things begin spiraling out of control……curious?....pick up this book at your favourite store….enjoy

My thoughts:

One cozy mystery indeed, it moves at a sail pace and keeps this way till the very end. Having said this, it may be slow but far from boring. It is quite a perfect story to spook us and to kick off the season with Halloween folklore, goodies and extravagant costumes….not forgetting the help from the great unknown….

It would not be a mystery without a murder and of course during the gala someone studently collapses setting off a string of speculations and Merry Wilkinson at the thick of the action. Strangest things are going on and Merry is determined to find out.

This story is well-written: clean and clear. The characterization is on the spot and the atmosphere is great…..love all those spooky faces

We have wonderful sweets all along this story and recipes to try making at the end

If you enjoyed a story that is not taxing this one is for you.

My thanks to Crooked Lane Book and Netgalley for this ARC

Spooky murder in a cozy Christmas town!

Our favourite Christmas town, Rudolph, NY, is getting ready for Halloween. I have to say, the town is spookier than normal. Everyone in town is excited to attend a charity gala put on by Eleanor Hammond, a new resident and Merry Wilkinson’s mom, a former opera diva. Merry’s friend Vicky is a day away from launching her new cookbook, and she is catering the event with her to-die-for desserts. The splashy event is a smashing success until one attendee keels over dead. Although Merry doesn’t actively investigate, her keen observation skills still lead her to danger.

I loved how the author introduces an element of the supernatural into the story. This is the 9th entry in the series, and it is always fun to return to the town of Rudolph. Filled with interesting, quirky characters, it is frequently the scene of murder and mayhem. The cozy Christmas town has an eerie Halloween make-over, and the residents excel at celebrations. This was a fast-read with a heart-pounding finale. Recommended for readers who enjoy their mysteries set in cozy towns with holiday vibes. 'Tis the Season to Be Scary will appeal to fans of the Christmas Tree Farm Mysteries by Jacqueline Frost or the DI James Walker series by Alex Pine.

Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for access to an advanced reader copy.

How wonderful it is to enjoy a ninth book in a series I am truly addicted to. Every year I look forward to a new book, since I know that Ms. Vicki Delany writes one book per year in all 4 of her cozy mystery series.

I am amazed at how this brilliant author can make up such complex relationships leading to a murder, and how the murder is actually carried out. Every new book seems to have a more intricate plot.

It was so rewarding to follow Merry Wilkinson, the protagonist as she gets involved in solving yet another murder. It was also nice to catch up with the colorful cast of accompanying characters that have become very dear to me. We are also introduced to new characters...some nice, and others not so much.

The tense scenes at the end of each book are a marvelous example of how the author weaves all the details and happenings in the story and brings them to a climax. Each time she makes the reader fear for the heroine's life, fully knowing that she will be alright, since this is a cozy mystery.

I loved the plot of this book, which takes place at Halloween, even though this is a Christmas Year Round mystery series.

Ms. Dina Perlman expertly performs each character, even speaking with a French accent.

I look forward to enjoying the next chapter in Merry Wilkinson's sleuthing adventures.

Grab your candy corn and cozy up by the jack-o’-lantern glow—‘Tis the Season to be Scary by Vicki Delany is a spirited Halloween treat. We return to Rudolph, New York, just in time for a frightfully fun celebration, and this charming holiday town is as delightful as ever. With its festive atmosphere, tasty treats, costumed guests, and endearing cast of characters—including the ever-likable Merry Wilkinson—the scene is perfectly set for the Halloween Gala. Of course, the party takes a chilling turn when murder crashes the festivities, putting Merry in the hot seat and sending her on the hunt for a killer. I happily followed along as Merry asked questions, pieced together clues, and uncovered secrets hiding beneath Rudolph’s cheerful surface. There are plenty of suspects, a twist or two, and just the right amount of spooky folklore to give the mystery extra Halloween sparkle. The food descriptions are mouthwatering, and the recipes at the end are a fun bonus. While this cozy mystery can be read as a standalone, I recommend enjoying the festive series in order for the full Rudolph experience. With tricks, treats, and a merry little murder, ‘Tis the Season to be Scary is a spooktacular cozy mystery that is sure to cast a happy spell on readers.

Merry Wilkinson, who owns a Christmas shop in Rudolph, New York, is excited about a big Halloween season fundraiser at the local inn. Her best friend, Vicky, is providing baked goods for the event - all from her new cookbook, which is about to be published. Unfortunately, a guest dies - after eating one of Vicky's cake pops. As danger (and spooky happenings!) increases, Merry tries to solve the mystery.

I wanted to read 'Tis the Season to Be Scary because I love cozy mysteries and enjoy the Year-Round Christmas Mystery series.

As always, I enjoyed the holiday theme in this book -- with Halloween as well as plenty of Christmas references, thanks to Merry's shop.

I like Merry as an amateur detective. She's smart and resourceful, even in the face of danger (and there is a scary car chase in this book). I also like her boyfriend Alan, her friends, her family, and - of course - her Saint Bernard dog Matterhorn.

This is a well written, lively paced mystery. There were several strong suspects and I enjoyed sleuthing along with Merry. (I was suspicious of the killer!)

I recommend 'Tis the Season to Be Scary for fans of cozy mysteries, and especially for readers who enjoy small town settings and holiday themes.

Good book. Interesting plot. Like the ghostly additions........ Not much on additional character development
