In this juicy psychological thriller, home organizer Emily is invited to vacation at her beautiful and wealthy new client's summer home—but once inside, Emily doesn’t want to leave.

Every one of my home organizing clients is a fabulous liar.

They tell themselves they need to keep clutter in their lives for rainy days or just-in-cases. They hold onto things too tightly. Most people don't know how to cut to the heart of what's important and purge everything that's not.

That's where I come in. I can look into my client’s lives and see exactly what's weighing them down, and I get rid of it for them.

It sounds easy, but I’ll let you in on a I have trouble letting go of things, too.

When Cap slides into my life with her neon signs and velvet hair bows and magnetic energy, I know I can't just let her walk away. Because one of the first rules of home organizing is that like belongs with like. And Cap and me? We're destined to be together.

She may not know it yet, but that's okay. I'd be lying if I didn't say the challenge is part of the thrill. And luckily for Cap, I'm not afraid of a little hard work.

Be careful who you let into your life. Emily is a home organizer. She has been hired by Cap. Cap is a star and soon becomes the object of obsession by the unhinged Emily.

This one comes out September 8.

This is a snapshot into the crazy world of a deranged stalker. The upshot is a book devoid of any interesting character. We just circle around Emilies delusions. This was a climb to get through. There was a twist at the end. I had checked out by then. 2 1/2 stars do think this would be a good pick for someone wanting to do there for in the thriller genre as it is a fast read.

A Beautiful Lie by Tanya Grant was a bit of a strange ride. The whole time I was reading, it felt like a knockoff version of the Netflix series You. Emily, a home organizer, becomes obsessed with her client Cap, and like Joe, we’re pulled deep into her thoughts and rationalizations for her increasingly over-the-top behavior.

When Cap invites Emily to spend the month of July at her family’s gorgeous summer home, Emily is convinced it’s the perfect chance to solidify their relationship. What follows is bizarre, unsettling, and hard to look away from.

It’s definitely not your typical thriller, but if you enjoy obsessive, slightly unhinged character-driven drama, this might be one to pick up.

I received this advanced reader copy from NetGalley.

As the book begins, it is very clear that our main character (antagonist?) is a psychopath. The book begins with a prologue in which someone is crying out for help while Emily is "organizing" the house. But then we are taken back in time (or are we? that seems to be implied, but is a little bit unclear) to a time when Emily is meeting up with a potential new client. Emily is an organizer. She helps clients organize their spaces more efficiently, throwing out what they don't need and reorganizing what is left. She seems to be quite good at what she does.

So Emily meets the girl that will come to be known as "Cap," and is hired to organize her workspace. Emily becomes quite enamored with Cap, and begins to arrange her whole life around her. She inserts herself into Cap's life, manipulating things to the point that she even gets invited to spend a whole month of the summer at their summer "cottage." News flash: it's not a cottage . . . it's a mansion. Think "My Cottage" from the most recent season of Bridgerton, if you watch that show.

Anyway. I don't want to reveal any more of the plot of this well-crafted story. It doesn't take long to understand that Emily is just wrong. There is something very "off" about her. And Ms Grant has written this character so very well, in my opinion. There are quite a few "Oh, no! She's not going to . . . Oh! She is!" moments in this book. And even knowing what we know about Emily, there are also quite a few "didn't see THAT coming!" moments.

So why did I only give it four stars? There are a couple of continuity problems that might get fixed before final publication. One of those comes at the 16% point (no page numbers in my digital edition) when Emily says (or thinks) "Even though Cap has a habit of being late . . ." I don't remember that coming up previously, but it is written as though we should be aware of this already. Not a serious issue, though.

And there are points where there are quite suddenly hints of eroticism that kind of appear out of nowhere. At those points, it was like the story was having an identity crisis. I'm not bothered by "spice" in a story, but there were a couple of points where that "spice" bordered on outright porn.

The last reason I didn't say it is a five-star book is that I don't feel that there is ever an understanding of what is going on (and with who) in the prologue. Is it referring to Cap's house, Cap's family? Is it a previous person or family? I think I might know who it is, but it's unclear.

Other that, though, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book. I would recommend it to lovers of psychological thrillers involving a stalkery psychopathic person. One of the best parts of the story is when Emily starts coming unhinged and blames it on everyone else. Oh, and the ending. I was totally surprised by the ending. So there's that.

Emily organizes people’s lives for a living, which already feels like a red flag if you think about it for more than five seconds. She doesn’t just declutter closets, she decides what matters and what doesn’t, what stays and what goes. So when she meets Cap, who is beautiful, chaotic, and impossible to ignore, and gets invited into her glossy, perfect world, it’s not just a job anymore; it’s a fixation. In Emily’s mind, some things are just meant to be kept, and Cap is not something she’s willing to let go of.

This is the kind of book where you start off thinking, okay, this is a little off, and then suddenly you’re twenty chapters deep like, “oh sh*t, we are fully and deeply unwell here.” Emily’s narration is so controlled, so confident, that it almost tricks you into following her logic before you catch yourself and think, wait. No. Absolutely not. That chaotic energy is where this book thrives. You're fully aware that you're witnessing someone spiral, but it’s so neatly packaged, so carefully justified, that you can’t look away. The dynamic between her and Cap is tense in that crackling, unpredictable way where you know something is going to snap.

The whole time you're reading, you can feel the inevitable disaster building. Every choice. Every rationalization. Every “this is fine” when it is SO not fine. Everything neatly clicks, and you get that satisfying realization that this story has been laying its tracks the entire time while you were just along for the ride. This book has one of those endings that makes you sit there in silence for a second, replaying everything, realizing this was never a story about control. It was about obsession wearing a perfectly curated mask until it just couldn’t anymore. Many thanks to Berkley Publishing for this early read that is set to publish September 8, 2026.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the ARC of A Beautiful Lie.

Wow, I really loved this book. The setting, the characters, the rich glamorous lifestyle — it completely pulled me in from the beginning. Tanya Grant created such an addictive atmosphere where everything feels luxurious and polished on the surface, while underneath it’s messy, obsessive, and completely unhinged in the best way.

Emily was SUCH a frustrating character to read about, but in a way that made me unable to stop turning the pages. She was so gullible when it came to Cap, constantly letting herself get bossed around and controlled. I kept thinking, girl, stand UP. Meanwhile Cap was unbelievably insensitive, especially toward both Emily and her mother, and honestly I did not like her at all. But that toxic dynamic between them made the story even more entertaining because you never knew how far things were going to spiral.

What really made this book work for me was how chaotic and obsessive everything felt. The tension kept building and I was fully invested in seeing how it would all fall apart. Emily was honestly a horrible person by the end of this book — manipulative, selfish, and completely out of control — and I could not believe how much she got away with. I was genuinely hoping she would end up in jail.

The ending left me wanting SO much more. I absolutely need a sequel because I am not ready to leave these characters behind yet. This was such a juicy, fast-paced psychological thriller with messy relationships, obsession, lies, and rich people drama. I devoured it.

Thank you NetGalley for sending me this ebook in exchange for a honest review.

Emily, a professional organizer who cleans out the clutter for ultra-wealthy clients. The irony is that while she's great at purging other people's stuff, she’s secretly a massive hoarder herself. Everything changes when she gets hired by Cap, this gorgeous, magnetic heiress with a mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. Emily becomes instantly obsessed with her. Emily is a creepy stalker! This gave me the ick vibes with being overly obsessed with a girl named Cap. Cap invites Emily to her summer home and strange things start happening. All the friends blame each other, but Emily frames Natasha to get her out of the way to have Cap all to herself.

Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy.

A Beautiful Lie is an addictive, fast-paced thriller that pulls you in with its layered secrets and morally complex characters. The story does a great job of blurring the line between truth and deception, keeping you questioning everyone’s motives until the very end.

What stood out most was the atmosphere which was tense, emotional, and filled with just enough unease to keep the pages turning. The author skillfully builds suspense through shifting perspectives and well-timed reveals, making it hard to fully trust any one version of events.

At times, the pacing dips slightly in the middle, but the final twist more than makes up for it, delivering a satisfying and thought-provoking conclusion.

Overall, this is a compelling thriller that explores how far people will go to protect the lies they’ve built their lives around. Perfect for fans of character-driven suspense with emotional depth.

This was a great blend of psychological suspense, popcorn thriller, and weird girl lit.

It’s obvious from the prolog you are in for a wild ride, but boy does it deliver. Emily is clearly obsessive and bordering on delusional from the beginning, yet the writing is so smooth she almost comes across logical until you think about what she’s doing. And as the story goes on, so too does the level of unhinged behavior.

If you are interested in a strong, albeit psychotic, main female leads and plot-driven stories, this could be a good pick!

I will say, some of the story does require just accepting the plot holes and going along with it (e.g., why was Emily embraced so quickly, why is she never suspected as more and more outrageous thjngs happen, etc).

Thanks to Tanya Grant, Berkley, and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and Berkley Publishing for the Advance copy. This book gave me Single White Female vibes. Emily is as a home organizer trying to build her business. She also stalks her new client, Cap, a rich artist that lives a life Emily is determined to become a part of... a significant part of. The pages turn easily, as Emily's plan to become indispensable to Cap and her mother goes off the rails. There is tension throughout the story, but the ending feels rushed. No one seems to question the newcomer to their life, or her story, even when their circle continues to shrink. 3.5 stars

Emily is a professional organizer that is no stranger to hard work and picking yourself up by your bootstrap. When Emily lands a dream job with Calliope, she does everything she can to become part of her inner circle.

For most of this book, I kept wondering where the story was leading, but let me tell you - when it hit, it was a HIT.

The characters are interesting. There was a very defined line between the have and the have not and as a reader, I saw my loyalties shifting between the pages.

I want to express my appreciation to NetGalley and the publishers for providing an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Grab a copy on September 8th.

This book was a super fun and juicy read. First I loved the organizing aspect of it since I am obsessed with home organization so that really drew me in. Emily becomes consumed with her latest client Cap and what follows is a disturbing tale of obsession and lies. At times I was creeped out and frustrated. I was enthralled with all the drama and couldn’t wait to see how it ended. This was so hard to put down and I ended up reading it in a day because I was hooked. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I have such mixed feelings about A Beautiful Lie. On one hand, it almost immediately pulled me in and even as Emily was digger herself into deeper holes, I had no idea where the story would take me. On the other hand, it reminded me very much of a very well-known story in recent pop culture (I don't want to risk any spoilers, so trying to stay vague), except lacking the final punch. There were a few plot holes that could have been tied up more neatly, but overall, this was a fun weekend read and gave me some much-needed escapism.

*Reviewing for Netgalley* If you are looking for the female/LGBTQ version of "You," this is your book. I see so much of Joe in Emily. It is written so much better than that book too! I enjoyed it, but it was a bit stretched out at points.
Emily is a hard-working woman. She owns her own home organization business and is great at her job. When her newest client, Cap, gets in contact with her, Emily knows her life is about to change. She is a bit obsessive in all aspects of her life.

Dark, twisted, and juicy seem more appropriate than “beautiful” in this new title from Tanya Grant. Emily is an organizer with a huge obsession with her new client Calliope who goes by “Cap”. Working her way into any avenue of Cap’s life seems easy at first, but as obstacles keep piling up Emily’s resolve grows stronger, her fantasies more passionate and her actions more dire.

Thank you, Berkley Publishing Group, for providing the copy of A Beautiful Lie by Tanya Grant. I love it when I’m entranced by a book from the first page, like this one! The book went on, Emily seemed to live more and more in lust with Cap, and letting her fantasies overtake her, so it felt uncomfortable. I raced through the pages to find out how this story wuld end, and loved the unexpected reveal, and the shocking end. 4 stars

Thanks you Berkley Publishing Group for the ARC of this very intense mystery/thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.
Emily is a home organizer and does an organizing job for Calliope, Cal as she is called, and develops a crush on her which turns bizarre. Natasha is Cal's friends which leads to a jealousy triangle from the start. There are lots of bad choices, twists, turns and surprises in this book that kept me riveted until the very surprising end.

Okay wow, it was pretty clear from the outset that this novel and this protagonist were going to take the reader on a wild and deranged ride, but I couldn't have anticipated just how much of a roller coaster it would be with the diabolical Emily at the center. A fantastic, quick read on a cold and rainy summer day.

Novel about a home organizer who becomes obsessed with her client and starts stalking her, determined to become a part of her life. Once she gets invited to the client's summer home, she stops at nothing to get rid of all the other people in her clients life. Creepy but suspenseful enough to keep you reading to the very (literally) bitter end.

An obsessive desire for her new client drives Emily to insert herself into her life. It starts out light but becomes darker/more twisted as the book goes on. It is a tale of love and desire and the desire to be someone else and be swallowed up by her life. The ending moves quickly as thing spiral out of control

Emily, owner of a home organizing business, is invited to vacation at a client's beautiful summer home. Emily is attracted to her client's magnetic energy and wealthy lifestyle. What proceeds is a dark, tense and witty thriller and you will suspect every character of nefarious motives. The ending is truly shocking. Read-alikes: The Talented Mr Ripley, The Last Mrs Parrish
