I was not expecting an email from the publisher with this ARC, no sirree! And I literally dropped everything to read it, too. So many thanks!
Aleks and Nadia were painful, I won't lie. It was so hard to read. And honestly, I should have taken that content warning list and sat with it like a big girl (and not thought I was a big girl in acknowledging that some of the topics might be hard for me 🙄). There were a lot of bit things in this book - aren't there always in HBY's books? - and despite a lot of them being sore points for me, I actually found reading this to be ok.
Back to Nadia and Aleks - the pain was in their timing. The yearning and pining and just learning how to be. But I think my enjoyment of this book came from the yearns and pines. That frustration of waiting and missing and knowing that they both knew but couldn't. The characters grappling with the almost moments was a hoot to read and I was on the eds of my seat multiple times just waiting for the moment to hit.
The family around Aleks and Nadia were lovely too - and if you've read People Watching you get a fun timeline;) - characters who you'd want as part of life I would think.
A grea story of found family, of home and belonging, of realising everyone deserves to be loved.

After being summoned by her older brother Nick, Nadia returns to her small town after trying to make her life for herself in the city. Defeated and battling a whole host of demons, she reunites with her old friend Aleks. Aleks always classed the Kablukov siblings as family, but his feelings toward Nadia are definitely not of the familiar variety. But his desire to make sure she, and everyone else around him, is happy, means he is left pining in silence (silence that everyone but Nadia can hear).
This book was so good - it was black cat and golden retriever (but with so many layers to them), slow burn (but no third act break up), friends to lovers, found family and extremely good spice.

I think I enjoyed the first book in this series a little more, but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy People Pleasing! I still really liked the characters and, most importantly, the chemistry between them. Hannah Bonam-Young really knows how to create characters you can connect with and relationships that feel genuine.
My biggest issue was the pacing. For most of the book, it felt like we were waiting for something to happen, and then suddenly everything happened right at the end. So much was packed into those final chapters that it felt a little rushed, and then the book ended quite abruptly, which left me feeling a bit like… wait, that’s it? 😂
Despite that, I really did enjoy spending time with these characters, and the chemistry definitely kept me invested. It just didn’t quite hit the same for me as the first book.
Still a lovely read.
