Cold Front: A Logan Cross Thriller

Rate this book
When a routine Coast Guard call turns into a brutal homicide investigation, Boatswain’s Mate First Class Logan Cross is thrust back into the world he thought he left behind—the world where danger lurks beneath every wave, loyalties fracture under pressure, and the wrong move can get you killed.
Cross wanted a quieter life after years with the elite Maritime Security Response Team, but when his crew responds to a vague medical emergency off Cape Ann, they find something far a drifting boat, a dead trafficker with two bullets in his chest, and a deck stacked with narcotics. The victim isn’t random. Cross recognizes him instantly—Tony Rivetti, a notorious trafficker he once hunted in MSRT ops… and narrowly missed.
Before Cross can secure the scene, his commanding officer abruptly shuts down protocol, blocks law enforcement notification, and quietly meets with a mysterious lieutenant who vanishes as quickly as he appeared. Something is wrong in Gloucester—dead wrong—and Cross’s instincts scream that a dangerous conspiracy is taking shape in the shadows.
As Cross digs deeper, he uncovers a network of corruption, covert players, and a kill-list disguised as maritime mishaps. To expose the truth, he’ll need every skill he hoped he’d never use again—tactical expertise, combat intuition, and the relentless drive to protect his crew at any cost. But the enemies closing in on him aren’t just drug runners or hired killers. They wear uniforms. They hold authority. And they know Cross is getting too close.
With a storm rising on sea and shore, Cross must risk his career, his marriage, and ultimately his life to stop a deadly operation before it reaches the people he loves most. Because in this game, the only way out is through—and the ocean isn’t the only thing that’s unforgiving.
Cold Front is a gripping military thriller packed with adrenaline-fueled action, authentic Coast Guard operations, high-stakes conspiracy, and a hero fighting to do what’s right in a world where doing so could destroy him. Perfect for fans of Jack Carr, Mark Greaney, C.J. Box, and Stephen Hunter, this explosive nautical thriller launches the unforgettable Logan Cross into a collision course with corruption, vengeance, and the razor’s edge of justice.

I was fortunate to get a gifted copy of Cold Front from author D.M. Webber. Being a fan of military/action thrillers, I knew this would be one in my wheelhouse. This, however, is the first book I've read where the hero is Boatswain's Mate First Class in the UnitedStates Coast Guard. Thinking that he will have a less stressful career as he did as a Coast Guard's elite Maritime Security Team, Logan Cross is content just doing his duties. When three questionable violent deaths happen, and through his previous training, he knows something is not right. Additionally when his fellow crew member is shot, he knows it's up to him to respond and find answers. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, detail driven book. The hand-to-hand fighting sequences are some of the best I've read, and the descriptions of the boats and how they are driven make the reader feel they are right there. A very solid debut novel!! Well done!! 4 1/2 stars.

Having never read a military thriller, I wasn’t entirely sure how well it would grab me or keep me interested but this author does an incredible job of capturing my attention. This book is hard hitting with its action, intrigue and character depth. The main character, while flawed, is easy to root for due to his devotion to his job, his crew, and his family. He will do the hard things despite the potential consequences that follow. I laughed at the character interactions and found myself highly invested in not only the main character but all the supporting cast as well. I find it hard to believe this is a debut novel, as the author has an incredible sense of what the reader needs to know with minimal fluff and filler. Some of the sequences were heavily technical, but I think that for readers who enjoy military thrillers this would be right up their alley. This is going to be an incredible series and I cannot wait to read more!

I went into this not knowing what to expect because I’ve never read a military thriller before. I’ve been leaning more into police procedurals and legal thrillers lately, so I was intrigued to pick this one up.

I loved the flashback moments woven into the story. They give us a good picture of who Logan Cross is and what shaped him. Those glimpses into his past add depth. I also loved the scenes with his wife, Melanie. They grounded the story and reminded me that he’s more than a Coast Guard BM caught in a high risk conspiracy. He’s a husband trying to protect the life he built.

There were definitely some tactical terms that went over my head, and a few action scenes were hard for me to fully visualize, but none of that pulled me out of the story. The pacing kept things moving, the tension kept climbing, and I stayed invested in how it would all unfold. I also thought it was such a cool touch to see Jake Harper from The Detective Harper Series pop in. I love a good crossover moment, especially between separate authors.

If you enjoy authors like Tom Clancy, Jack Carr, or Brad Taylor, this one will absolutely be your vibe. Think military thriller, conspiracy, high stakes, and a hero trying to do the right thing when the system is working against him.

For a debut novel, this was a strong start. I’m genuinely excited to watch this author grow and to see more of Logan in future installments.

Thank you to D.M. Webber for an early copy of this book, but as always, all thoughts are my own.
