When Cathy Hannah realized she had a crush on her best friend Mike, she was too terrified to tell him. She started drawing comics of moments between them as an outlet for her feelings, and eventually decided to hand over the comics as a way to profess her love. Cathy won a 2005 Xeric Foundation Award for Winter Beard, a grant to self-publish the book.
Because everything in this book actually happened, it is a totally relateable story. I love the look into the private neurosis of having a crush on someone whose behavior you're not sure how to read. I would say the book is equally enjoyable to comic readers and people who have never heard of a graphic novel. I've read it several times and I'm sure I'll keep picking it up.
And I'm not just saying that because it's about my best friends.
