The resentment Kaleb faced, from his own generation, for his duty as a combat Marine in Vietnam made him decide to backpack around the world, not knowing what he was looking for. But now it’s time to go home. As he hitchhikes from LA back to Texas, fate has other plans. Just outside of Tucson, a murder takes place, and the police say the slayer seen running away looks a lot like Kaleb—but Kaleb has an alibi. The young waitress who served him a meal at the time of the murder remembers him. Although her testimony rescues him, it is not Kaleb’s reason for falling in love with her. She needs him to rescue her from the self-doubt plaguing her life.
