In these thirteen stories, ordinary people discover the flames that define them—the slow burn of desire, the sudden flare of violence, the smouldering aftermath of loss. Some fires warm us. Others consume everything we thought we knew about love, loyalty, and survival.
With unflinching honesty and surprising tenderness, Bathing in Fire explores the moments when we’re forced to choose between safety and passion, between who we were and who we might become. These are stories about the heat that shapes us, the sparks that ignite us, and the ashes we rise from.
From quiet domestic kitchens to battlefields half a world away, from first love to final revenge, each tale illuminates the human condition at its most vulnerable and its most fierce.
Some flames burn everything to ash. Others light the way home.
Bathing In Fire is a collection of short stories that capture the unique distinctness of human nature, simply and intricately in a manner that sharpens both the admirable and monstrous qualities of the everyday individual, like you and me. Bakers style of writing is familiar but perceptive, highlighting the subtle but meaningful details behind both the subjects of his tale and the scenes they inhabit. Each story, although all very different, carries this quality, and every time a new budding curiosity emerges followed by a concluding realisation. It is wildly intriguing, and cleverly woven together by the overarching theme of passionate emotion. My enjoyment came from the new puzzle at each chapter.
