There could never be a thirteenth Ledes cousin, not when the Devil himself promised to claim them as his own.
The mist-shrouded town of Galloway needs every ounce of protection from the demons lurking in the Barrens. Harper Ledes longs to escape the cursed village her family rules. As the youngest Ledes cousin, she’s always been an outcast, despite her noble name.
When two militia officers blackmail her into helping them solve a crime, the secret of Harper’s mindspeaking magic is put at risk. Lieutenant Logan Greer’s weapons were stolen from right under his nose, and Captain Jacob Miller will do whatever it takes to help him solve the crime. As Harper gets closer to the Barrens—and the men who threaten her—she realizes her life is intimately entangled with forbidden secrets held in the pines.
Now, Harper must save a town she once wished to abandon, even if it means ripping a hole between realms to do it.
Daughter of the Pines is a romantic fantasy inspired by one of America's most infamous folktales. An atmospheric, gothic tribute to the Pine Barrens, the story will appeal to fans of Rachel Gillig and Kristen Ciccarelli.

Thank you to the publisher Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book was absolutely fantastic, there were so many plot twists and I saw none of them coming but what a trip it was. I liked Harper, the 12th Ledes Cousin but the only one missing the brand and some of her cousins made sure she felt like she never belonged. Mira in particular was a real piece of work, she needed a good dose of karma. I really felt for her as her mother died in mysterious circumstances when she was born, all she wants to do is escape Galloway until Jacob and Logan hoodwink her into helping them solve the mystery of the missing weapons. I thought Logan was a bit arrogant at the start of the book but he grew on me, he and Harper sniped at each other to hide their growing affection and I loved that. I loved world building in this book, the plot and the pacing and I was so engrossed in reading this book that I read in one sitting. I liked Jacob too, no spoilers but I was routing for him when all was revealed. Overall this was a very satisfying reading and I enjoyed it immensely, it had everything romance, danger, intrigue and enough twists to keep you guessing. Highly recommended.
hank you to NerdFam for the ARC! My opinions are my own.
Daughter of the Pines by Maria A. Eden was a really enjoyable and unique read.
I loved the eerie, folklore inspired atmosphere and the way the Pine Barrens setting felt so alive and mysterious. The town of Galloway had a gothic, misty vibe that pulled me in right away, and the author does a great job reshaping familiar legends into something fresh and immersive.
Harper was a strong, grounded FMC, and I appreciated the focus on family, secrets, and hidden magic. The magic system was creative without being overwhelming, and the romance worked nicely as a subtle layer alongside the mystery and worldbuilding.
Overall, this was a solid, atmospheric fantasy that I truly enjoyed. I’d definitely recommend it to readers who love folklore inspired worlds, moody settings, gaslamp fantasies, and romantic fantasy with a strong sense of place.

Review: A stunning work of art! There could never be a thirteenth Ledes cousin, not when the Devil himself promised to claim them as his own. In the mist-shrouded town of Galloway demons lurk in the Barrens. Harper ledes longs to escape the curse village her family rules. When militia officers blackmail her into helping her solve a crime her secret is put at risk. Daughter of the Pines is a romantic fantasy inspired by the infamous folktale the Jersey Devil, as someone who grew up in this area I absolutely loved seeing the little references dropped in. While reading this book I had so many theories, some were way off the mark but some I got right and watching them unfold was a great experience for me. The writing was captivating and flow really well. The plot and characters were well structured I never wanted to put the book down. You can definitely tell that the author took the time and did a ton of research to bring this story to life which I appreciate greatly. Another added bonus for me was that it had the perfect balance of romance and fantasy, neither one took away from the other. I will definitely be adding more of Maria A. Eden to my TBR.
This story is fast paced with characters that you truly feel every emotion with. Maria's ability to write beautifully crafted characters is top tier. The family dynamics, the strong love and bonds are heart warming. Not just between siblings, but cousins as well. There is not a single thing I could critique! At all.
I legit consumed this book in a smidgen over 12 hours!
This was such a unique, atmospheric adventure 🌲✨—one that pulled me in even before the story officially began. The author opened with a note explaining that this book was inspired by a real place in New Jersey—the Pine Barrens—and the legend of the Jersey Devil 😈🌫️, and I was immediately hooked.
The town of Galloway felt misty, cursed, and oddly charming, with strong Victorian vibes. If you love elegant balls, social hierarchy, and small-town secrets wrapped in a gothic aesthetic, this world delivered. Fans of Bridgerton will absolutely enjoy the atmosphere and aesthetics 💃🖤. The lore surrounding the Barrens, the wall, and the ever-present threat of the Devil was fascinating and immediately drew me in from the start.
The magic system was another highlight 🔥🧠. Magic manifested as “gifts” based on where someone was born, and the two we focused on—mindspeaking (SO cool!) and fire elemental magic—were very well explained and easy to follow. Nothing felt overly complicated, and I appreciated how naturally it was woven into the story.
Plot-wise, the pacing stayed fairly quick, which meant I was never bored ⏳✨. Harper Ledes, our FMC, was refreshingly independent and capable 💪👗. She could stand her ground against anyone—including the MMC, Logan—while still loving pretty dresses and embracing her femininity, which I adored. She felt relatable in that quiet, determined way. Logan initially came across as snarky 😏, but once his walls came down, he was genuinely sweet, protective, and a solid love interest 🥰🛡️. Their chemistry was soft and earnest, though I do wish we’d had more time with their romance—it felt a bit rushed, and a slightly longer book would’ve allowed their relationship to fully bloom 💔➡️❤️.
The side characters—James, Jacob, and Cade—were also well done 👏. They felt fleshed out and purposeful, which isn’t always easy to achieve. That said, I did struggle at times to feel deeply invested in everyone. There was so much happening—crime-solving, curses, blackmail, secrets, demons, magic—that it occasionally felt a bit convoluted 😵💫. The ambition was impressive, but it sometimes came at the cost of emotional connection.
Still, this story delivered major vibes 🌫️🖤. Between the cursed village, stolen weapons, dangerous secrets in the pines, and Harper being forced to confront a destiny she once wanted to escape, the stakes stayed high. Watching her slowly realize she might have to save the very town she wished to leave—possibly at the cost of tearing open realms—was compelling and emotional.
🌲 Tropes & Vibes You’ll Find: 🌫️ Gothic, Atmospheric Small Town 😈 Folklore-Inspired Fantasy (Jersey Devil vibes) 🧠 Secret Magic / Mindspeaking 🔥 Elemental Powers 🕵️ Crime-Solving & Blackmail 🖤 Cursed Village & Hidden Lore 💕 Sweet Romance 👗 Feminine yet Fierce FMC
✨ Perfect for readers who enjoy moody, folklore-inspired fantasy and atmospheric worlds similar to Rachel Gillig or Keri Lake.
Overall, Daughter of the Pines felt incredibly original, vibey, and thoughtfully imagined, even if it was a little crowded at times 🌲🖤.
💌 Thank you so much to the author and The Nerd Fam for the ARC opportunity!
Daughter of the Pines is a richly atmospheric standalone romantic fantasy steeped in folklore, secrecy, and longing. Drawing inspiration from one of America’s most infamous legends, Maria A. Eden crafts a story that feels both timeless and intimate—a gothic tribute to the Pine Barrens where mist, memory, and magic cling to every page.
At the center of the novel is Harper Ledes, the youngest—and supposedly impossible—thirteenth cousin in a family bound by an ancient bargain with the Devil himself. Harper’s desire to escape Galloway is deeply relatable; she is marked not by power or privilege, but by exclusion. Her outsider status within her own family gives the story its emotional backbone, grounding the larger mythic stakes in something deeply human: the need to belong.
Galloway itself is vividly realized. The cursed town feels alive, hemmed in by the Barrens and protected by traditions that are as dangerous as the threats they guard against. Eden’s worldbuilding is immersive without being overwhelming, weaving folklore, magic, and history into the narrative in a way that feels natural and cohesive. The mindspeaking magic in particular is thoughtfully handled—both a gift and a liability—raising the stakes each time Harper is forced closer to the truth hidden in the pines.
The plot unfolds through mystery and coercion rather than destiny alone. Harper’s reluctant involvement with militia officers Logan Greer and Jacob Miller introduces tension, moral complexity, and momentum. The stolen weapons investigation serves as an effective entry point into deeper secrets, gradually revealing how entangled Harper’s fate is with the land she wishes to leave behind. The romance develops alongside the mystery, offering warmth and banter without overtaking the story’s darker edges.
What stands out most is the novel’s thematic arc. Daughter of the Pines is not just about curses and demons—it’s about inheritance, choice, and the cost of protection. Harper’s journey from self-preservation to reluctant guardianship feels earned, shaped by difficult truths rather than sudden revelation. When the story turns toward sacrifice and consequence, it does so with emotional clarity rather than spectacle.
This is a moody, folkloric romantasy that will appeal strongly to readers who enjoy gothic atmospheres, slow-building tension, and myth-inspired fantasy with heart. Daughter of the Pines delivers a compelling blend of romance, mystery, and dark legend—an evocative standalone that lingers like fog long after the final page.
“We must not fight the fabric from unraveling. Rather, we can become the thread themselves. When we tie the fibers together, we can leave something new, something strong stronger.”
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In the town of Galloway, New Jersey was the Ledes family. The Ledes family could not have a 13th cousin or else the devil claimed them for himself. Harper Ledes is the youngest of the Ledes cousins. Always the outcast of her family, she dreams to escape Galloway. Weapons from the town’s infirmary start going missing and two militia officers, Logan Greer and Jacob Miller, blackmail her into helping find the thief. She quickly learns that the Barrens hold many secrets and it puts her, her community, and everyone she loves in danger. She must now save the town she so desperately wanted to leave.
Oh my goodness! This was exactly the book I needed. This has been one of my most anticipated reads since Maria posted that she was writing this book. Growing up in the Pine Barrens, I have heard the folklore of the Jersey Devil for as long as I can remember. My father used to own a home in the heart of it when I was little. The Pine Barrens holds a special place in my life and so many memories have been created there over the last 29 years. The Pine Barrens are widely known for the creepy feel of them. There is over 1 million acres in the Pine Barrens and it was the perfect location for this book. While this is not a historical book, it does tie a lot to the folklore. I loved the complexity of the characters and the plot kept me intrigued the entire time. I literally was audibly gasping at the end of most chapters. There were also a lot of Jersey references in regards to real places in New Jersey and I thought that was so cool. Even though it is not set in Batsto Village, that was what I pictured reading Daughter of the Pines. This is the third time I have advanced read one of Maria’s books and this is by far my favorite! I loved her Elemential series, but this story just was so perfect. It had the perfect ratio of folklore and romance! Getting to watch Maria grow as an author had been such an awesome experience. Daughter of the Pines gets release on February 17th! Don’t miss out of this romantic fantasy inspired by one of America’s most infamous folktales!
Before the book even starts, the author puts a message to the reader stating how this story is based on a real place in New Jersey called Pine Barrens and the story that goes along with it, the Jersey Devil. Immediately this had me hooked. After reading, I now want to learn more about the inspiration behind it!
I really enjoyed the setting and magic system. The town, Galloway, was super cute and felt very Victorian. Fans of Bridgerton will love this world! The lore/history with the wall and the barrens was my favorite part. It hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go. For the magic system, people can get various gifts depending on where they are born, and the two gifts we focus on are mindspeaking (SO cool!) and fire elemental magic. This was very well done, and readers should have no trouble understanding how the magic system works.
As for the plot, the pacing is fairly quick, so you will not be bored once. I really enjoyed our FMC, Harper. She was extremely independent and could hold her own against anyone including the MMC, Logan. However, she loves pretty dresses and embraces her feminine side as well. I think a lot of readers will be able to relate to her. As for Logan, he comes off snarky at first, but once he comes out from his shell, he is super sweet and protective of Harper. He is a great love interest. Our other side characters (James, Jacob, and Cade) are lovely as well. They felt fully fleshed out which can be difficult to do with side characters sometimes.
I will say that I do think this book would have benefited by being a little longer. The romance, while very sweet, felt a bit rushed to me. I would've fallen more in love with Harper and Logan as a couple if that was the case.
A good read for those that love gothic romantasy!!
Thank you to Victory Editing Netgalley Co-op for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!! All thoughts are my own.
This book completely pulled me out of my reading slump. Inspired by the folklore of the Jersey Devil, it had me instantly captivated from the very first pages. I genuinely could not put it down and ended up reading it in a single day, everything else I had planned was pushed aside because I had to know how it ended. The story blends romance and mystery beautifully, while also delivering a darker, more suspenseful atmosphere that kept me fully engaged. It reminded me slightly of The Shepherd King duology, which I loved! So readers who like Rachel Gillig or the Crimson Moth books I would highly recommend this! The twists throughout the book were well done and kept the story feeling fresh and unpredictable. Harper is a fantastic FMC and Logan is an equally great MMC. Their banter and chemistry were highlights for me and added so much to the story. I also really enjoyed the supporting cast; nearly every character felt thoughtfully written and memorable. Maria’s writing is immersive and detailed, and I especially loved the inclusion of folklore and creatures woven into the narrative. This is one of those rare books that made me want to reread it (even though rereading is not something I usually do). Overall, this was a captivating read with romance, mystery, and just the right touch of darkness. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy folklore inspired fantasy with strong characters and compelling twists.
ARC Review I completely consumed this book. I read it in under 24 hours and was honestly surprised by how much it pulled me in. The story is set in Galloway, a town sealed by magic and ruled by fire wielding triplets, the Ledes lords, who are seen as protectors by the people. The entire town lives under a prophecy: because the realm was closed off and the triplets were born with fire magic, the Demon will one day claim their 13th child as its own. Harper Ledes, the FMC, was such a standout for me. She’s loved by her family, incredibly talented, grounded, and has a dark sense of humor that made her very relatable. I also really appreciated how much emphasis was placed on family loyalty, not just for the main characters, but for the side characters too. Their stories mattered, and that added so much depth. The world-building and magic felt creative, with a vibe that reminded me of haunted New Orleans mixed with 1700s nobility and dark folklore. There’s mystery, suspense, and plot twists woven throughout, which kept me fully engaged. The dynamic between Harper and Logan Greer was another highlight. They had great banter, tension, and a kind of cosmic/fated pull between them. The romance was well done, not over the top, and the spice level stays around 1–2 🌶️ Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. If you like fantasy romance with a sprinkle of haunted folklore, mystery, and deep family bonds, Daughter of the Pines is definitely worth picking up. ✨
I enjoyed this book and all its gothic creepy fantasy goodness.
Harper was a sarcastic, witty, stubborn FMC and I really appreciated that despite her circumstances, she remained true to who she was throughout the whole story. Her commitment to her family was admirable and raw and truly felt realistic. This story highlighted how tough family dynamics can be very well and that made it feel more believable than the typical fantasy book.
The plot was regrettably a bit predictable. I figured out the big reveal way before it actually happened. I do wish it has been a little less obvious where the plot was going but I still enjoyed it. This was also one of the first fantasy books I’ve read in awhile where there was spice (1 out of 5 peppers) but the actual romance was really a side plot at best. I loved the dynamic between Harper and the MMC and I thought they were well paired. I actually appreciated how the romance wasn’t overly done because it felt more natural with it being a secondary plot instead of the main plot.
The writing style was fantastic and I would absolutely read another book by this author in the future. I also really enjoyed that this was rooted in real American folklore.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and while it was predictable, it was a good read. This is a solid 4 stars and I would definitely recommend it to fans of gothic fantasy.
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for providing this free ARC.
Daughter of the Pines is a beautiful, immersive standalone and honestly, that alone already had my heart. This story wraps you in a richly woven fantasy filled with found family, enemies-to-lovers tension, hatred that sharpens into desire, love, lust, and betrayal all layered in a way that feels intentional and deeply felt.
What struck me most was the steadfast love of a father unwavering, protective, and powerful. It left me aching in the best way, especially as the FMC carries that love with her through so many turning points in the story. Her emotional thread runs deep, and you feel it in every choice, every moment of hesitation, every act of strength.
The story is packed with suspense, action, romance, and supernatural elements, but none of it overwhelms the heart of the narrative. Instead, it all works together—each piece enhancing the other creating a reading experience that feels both thrilling and intimate.
I’m completely in love with this book. It gave me everything I crave: emotion, tension, magic, and a story that ends where it should, leaving satisfaction instead of emptiness.
A standalone fantasy that delivers on heart, heat, and hope and I’d read it again in a heartbeat
Thanks to NerdFam for the opportunity to read this book. All opinions are my own
Ugh I loved this. It's so rare when I love an arc, so I'm so so glad I loved this book.
This book checked all the boxes for me. Fantasy world, supernatural beings, badass FMC, smokin MMC, fantastic plot, and strong family connection. And maybe a hint of forbidden because the whole guard thing is hot AF and kinda forbidden 🤭
But for real though. This book was amazing.
Harper Ledes is a role model. She had her strengths and really liked to used it. She was loved by all (except that bitch Mira), she was talented, she was fierce when she needed to be, and she overcame multiple challenges. Can I be her? 🥲
Logan, the sweet blonde bodyguard is also a treasure. He was so so sweet on Harper, and my love for him is forever undying. He was strong and broody at times, but he was also kind and compassionate where needed. I trusted this man the entire time.
Jacob. My sweet baby Jacob. I could tell right away he'd be something special. The need for this man to be absolutely happy was strong. The way he interacted with Harper and Logan just told me everything I needed to know about his character. And to find out he's so special in every way?? Yup. Opinion has been cemented and will not be dug out.
Daughter of the Pines was an easy pick for me. New Jersey folklore, the Pine Barrens, and a fresh take on the Jersey Devil? Sign me up. This story reimagines the Ledes family curse with fire magic, mindspeaking, and a gothic colonial atmosphere that felt moody and immersive.
Harper is a standout FMC. She’s dark, witty, sarcastic, and artistic, and I loved that she never softens herself to fit anyone else’s expectations. She stays unapologetically herself, even when things get dangerous. Her dynamic with Logan is exactly my weakness: contentious, sharp-tongued, and simmering before it turns romantic. The romance stays more on the side plot, and there’s the tiniest bit of spice.
The Pine Barrens setting was fantastic. Misty, cursed, and steeped in history, it added so much to the tension and atmosphere. The reinterpretation of the Jersey Devil myth and the Ledes family legacy felt thoughtful and different, but still honored the folklore it’s inspired by.
Overall, this was an enjoyable, atmospheric read with an interesting heroine and a unique spin on a familiar legend. I really enjoyed it and would absolutely recommend it to readers who love gothic fantasy, folklore retellings, and strong-willed FMCs.
Thank you to the author and The Nerd Fam for the eARC.
First off, as always, thank you to the author and NerdFam for the advanced copy! My opinions are my own.
What if the monsters in your legends weren't the thing you should fear?
Daughter of the Pines is a fantastical, gaslamp romantasy set in the absolutely haunting (100% truly haunted) Pine Barrens of New Jersey, and is inspired by local legends. I'm a Jersey girl and grew up driving through the Barrens, hearing the stories of the Jersey Devil around campfires, and I was HOOKED the minute I read the dedication.
This story was a fast-paced single POV, with gothic/Victorian vibes, but the timeframe is fluid and I love the flexibility that gives. I really enjoyed watching Harper Ledes' journey and struggles with her place in the family, and feeling trapped in Galloway. The magic was unique and the worldbuilding was immersive without being overwhelming. We get a fiesty not-quite-enemies to ??? vibes with the main characters (the BANTER), and the plot twists and turns kept me guessing.
I read the whole thing in a day and would have happily had this be even longer. Monsters, magic, paranormal local legends, and a healthy dose of female empowerment. This was fantastic.
Thank you to @nerdfam and the author for the gifted eARC!
This book completely pulled me in with its eerie, folklore-rich atmosphere. The Pine Barrens setting feels alive; moody, mysterious, and steeped in legend. You can feel the weight of the history in every page, and the worldbuilding is immersive without ever becoming overwhelming.
The magic system is unique, the mythology is compelling, and the story leans heavily into atmosphere and character rather than rushing the romance, which I actually loved. The slow-burn tension, forced proximity, and he fell first (and harder) energy were perfection. The romance is there, but it never overshadows the story or the stakes.
Harper’s journey is emotional and layered, and the themes of identity, destiny, and belonging are woven beautifully into the plot. The pacing allows the mystery and folklore to unfold naturally, making the entire story feel haunting in the best way.
If you love folklore-inspired fantasy, moody settings, forbidden secrets, and slow-burn tension with just the right amount of spice, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
Daughter of the Pines is an absolute knockout! Maria A. Eden has crafted a gothic, atmospheric masterpiece that feels like a love letter to the eerie folklore of the Pine Barrens. If you loved Rachel Gillig’s One Dark Window, this needs to be your next read.
Here’s why this book is a must-read: Incredible World-Building: The town of Galloway is perfectly mist-shrouded and creepy, making the stakes feel high and the danger in the Barrens truly palpable.
Compelling Characters: Harper is a phenomenal FMC—vulnerable but strong as she navigates her family’s dark secrets and her hidden mind-speaking magic.
Delicious Banter: The chemistry between Harper and Logan is top-tier. Their sniping and growing affection added such a fun layer to the intense plot.
Unpredictable Twists: Just when I thought I had things figured out, a new revelation would drop. The ending left me absolutely stunned and desperate for book two.
This book is the perfect blend of romance, mystery, and dark fantasy. It pulled me right out of a reading slump, and I couldn't put it down until the very last page!
Daughter of the Pines is based off of Jersey Devil folklore. We follow Harper Ledes, the twelfth Ledes cousin born of the cursed Galloway fire-wielding triplet lords. Blackmailed into helping solve a theft at the town’s military armory using her mindspeaking magic, Harper crosses paths with Lieutenant Logan Greer. Harper wants to hate Logan for blackmailing her, especially after her cousins designate him as her personal guard, however, his magnetism is hard to fight and they enter into a whirlwind of a romance. Logan is truly Harper’s soulmate and their chemistry is impossible to deny. The romance in this one is well integrated, with the plot remaining the shining star throughout. The deeper Harper and Logan dig into the town’s dark secrets, the more earth shattering revelations they uncover. Ones that change Harper‘s life and the town of Galloway irrevocably. I absolutely loved the magic, character development, and found family aspects in this one. There is also an MM relationship between side characters that was well written. Although I guessed part of the plot twist in this one, I was hooked from start to finish and would highly recommend Daughter of the Pines.
This story captured me from the prologue - triplets born with fire magic that closed the thin place in the Barrens, the gateway between realms. The Devil, the fire master himself, claiming the thirteenth child born of the triplets as payment for the stolen flames.
I adore the slight discomfort that arises from a story with a gothic undercurrent. The writing was so engaging and kept me at a constant low level anxiety as the secrets unfolded. I simultaneously did and did not want to know what was going to happen. I wanted to know because I was so engrossed in the story but I didn’t want to know because I was a tad nervous about what was coming.
With a super enjoyable FMC who is sarcastic, snippy, funny, resilient and passionate, an at times, heartbreaking unravelling of a family’s history and a really beautiful romance, this book was engaging from start to finish. Add in demons, magical wards, a flying horse, the power of mind speech and truly loveable side characters, I cannot recommend this story highly enough.
I was so excited to read my first gaslamp tale, and this did not disappoint. Inspired by the legend of the Jersey Devil and the Pine Barrens, the story was atmospheric, eerie, and beautifully haunting.
I really loved the main character, who often dresses in black to reflect her mood. Her sharp wit and unfiltered tongue frequently get her into trouble and set her on a path full of romantic tension and clever banter. Strong willed and dreaming of escaping the small town she grew up in, a place where everyone knows everyone else’s business, especially when it comes to her noble family. The focus on family was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their loyalty to one another felt genuine and emotional, and I especially loved her dad. The romance is woven in perfectly alongside the mystery and the well crafted plot.
I would definitely recommend this to readers who enjoy dark and mysterious fantasy, magic rooted in the real world, and a slow burn romance.
Huge thank you to the author and The Nerd Fam for the eARC. I really enjoyed this! 🥰
Daughter of the Pines is a fantasy based on the real life Jersey Pines. The story is about the Ledes family. Triplet lords born with fire magic and a family curse stating the 13 child born from them, will belong to the Devil. Luckily, Harper Ledes is the 12th and final child of the Ledes family.
When Harper is blackmailed by Lieutenant Logan Greer and Captain Jacob Miller to help them find a thief stealing from the armory, more secrets are unraveled and truth about her family comes to light.
I absolutely loved this book! The magical elements, romance and twists were so captivating. I also love the family dynamics. Harper’s older male cousins absolutely adore her and they all seem more like siblings rather than cousins. Her father is an amazing dad. He’s so proud of his children even when he’s been dealing with his own grief for years.
Harper and Logan are great together even as they try to fight their growing feelings. He will follow her anywhere to protect her but understands when he needs to stand aside.
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Daughter of the Pines was such an engaging and picturesque read. I absolutely loved how the story weaves in the lore of the Jersey Devil—it adds this eerie, almost mythical layer that makes the world feel rich and immersive without ever being overwhelming.
One of the strongest parts of this book, in my opinion, is the way secrets are revealed. The trickle of hidden truths come to light at just the right pace. Every reveal made me more curious, more invested, and eager to keep turning the pages.
The tension builds naturally, the mystery stays compelling, and the folklore elements are handled in a way that feels fresh. If you enjoy stories with deep lore, creeping suspense, and carefully unraveled secrets, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
A solid 5-star read for me, and I’ll definitely be thinking about this story long after finishing it.
*I received this book as an ARC and am leaving this review unbiased and voluntarily*
01/22/2026-01/24/2026 Thank you Nerd Fam for the gifted digital proof of Daughter of the Pines by Maria A. Eden 💜 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Coming 02/17/2026)
I feel as if every Nerd Fam read is 100% a good read, and this one proved just that! 👏🏻
Daughter of the Pines is a fictional work taken inspiration from the real life story of the Jersey Devil and the New Jersey Pine Barrens. 🌲 Maria focuses on a magical retelling that has a unique chain linked system of heritage, and where the 13th child born to the triplets belongs to the Devil himself. Until that 13th child is born demons are trapped in the barrens with no way out and the brothers and their 12 children defend the wall and their people from these creatures with fire magic and a bound border. Except things take a turn when iron swords begin disappearing and the mist begins to thicken around and within the walls. 🔥 Oh yeah and forced proximity, enemies to lovers, he fell first and harder, agonizing almost forbidden slow burn. 🥵
This book was almost like a Christmas list come true! And it is a must read! 😉
This book had demons, magic, and a romance that didn’t take over the entire plot. It was well paced with good twists. The commitment that Logan had to his job/Harper was perfect. I liked that Harper was quick to share important information… it really bothers me when a main character has something wild happen to them and they just keep it to themselves.
This book is influenced by the Jersey Devil/New Jersey Pine Barrens. I had never heard of the folktale before, so I looked it up prior to starting the book and it’s terrifying to imagine seeing that in real life. Those images and the descriptions of mist/Harper never having seen stars or the sun before really helped with setting the atmosphere for the book.
This is a stand-alone which is appreciated when you’re in the middle of so many unfinished series. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author!
Thank you to Maria Eden and The Nerd Family for the ARC!
Daughter of the Pines by Maria A. Eden was such an enjoyable read, especially because of how the author brought the mythology of the Pine Barrens to life and turned it into something truly otherworldly. I loved the way the forest felt mysterious and alive making the story feel immersive and magical. Eden does an amazing job of taking existing mythology and reshaping it into her own unique world without losing that eerie, folklore-inspired feeling. The story focuses more on atmosphere, character, and myth rather than romance, and while there’s some “spice,” it honestly felt perfect for the tone of the book and never took away from the plot. This book is great choice for those who enjoys folklore-based fantasy with a moody, enchanting setting and a fresh take on familiar myths. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to read more works by this author !
Thank you to Maria A. Eden for the eARC of Daughter of the Pines for me to review! 🖤
Daughter of the Pines is a beautiful story that follows Harper Ledes, the youngest cousin of the 3 Lords of Ledes. The Ledes family is the main noble family of Galloway and their family is full of magic users. There are monsters, slow burn romance, fantasy setting, & so much character development. The FMC & MMC have the best banter and their relationship development is so sweet. The story builds beautifully and keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting more. The relationships between Harper & the other family members are mostly so wholesome, except for one, (I’m looking at you Mira), that make me feel like I can picture my family within the story. I absolutely loved Daughter of the Pines! 5/5 Stars 🌟 3 🌶️ absolutely perfect! 😍
Thank you to the Nerdfam for the ARC, all opinions are my own
When triplets are born with the power of fire, the gaps in the realm are sealed blocking the path of demons. In response, the Devil promises to claim the 13th child of the Ledes triplets.
Harper is the youngest Ledes, and despite her noble heritage, she has always seemed to not belong. One night she is apprehended by two militia officers who blackmail her into helping them find the iron weapons that have been stolen and reveal they know she has the secret power of mind speaking. As Harper becomes closer to the Barren's, the land that is clouded in mist and the demons trapped in her realm, a friendly voice whispers to her from the mist.
What secrets will she reveal in the investigations? Why has she always been the outcast?
A tale of facing your own challenges, finding your power, and discovering your belonging.
I didn’t realise how much I needed this book, namely, Cade.
I was pulled straight into the world Maria A. Eden has created: the lore, the creatures, and most importantly, the family at the heart of it all. I loved the maturity of the characters; their reactions felt authentic, grounded, and emotionally honest. The chemistry was perfection.
But this story is so much more than just a romantasy. It reminded me of Small Favours by Erin A. Craig and The Village (M. Night Shyamalan), with just a touch of Adalyn Grace woven in. It’s atmospheric, moving in the best way, and deeply emotional.
I loved every step of this healing journey, and I will absolutely be reading anything this author writes. This book was a joy to read and I miss it already.
Every once in a while a book comes along that captures you in the best way possible. Daughter of the Pines is such a book. I loved the aesthetic, the magic, the characters - everything.
Maria A Eden created a story you can grab onto and feel fully emerged in. Maria is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me. She has a way of writing mystical stories with small town charm mixed with mystery and suspense.
Daughter of the pines tells a story of a community cursed with demons just beyond the wall and a family that might be the key to saving them.
The main characters have my heart and I can’t wait to read more from this author. Thank you for the ARC copy Maria! I am leaving this review voluntarily.
