When a recently deceased soul is offered a chance to escape Oblivion, he must locate the lost Book of Remedies—an ancient text of miraculous healing power—before Demons use it to turn Earth into Hell.
What happens when you die? Forget clouds, harps, or fiery pits. Here, bureaucratic Angels—supervised by rival Archangel cabinet members and assisted by poker-playing Demon janitors—run Creation from celestial offices plagued by politics and back stabbing.
When a nameless soul with no memory of his past steps into this surreal afterlife, the Heavenly Department of Justice offers him a go on a mission to expose Satanists and idolaters on Earth. Success will earn him a coveted ticket to Heaven. Failure means eternal Oblivion.
It sounds like a one mission, eternal salvation. Or is it?
For his first—supposedly simple—assignment, the Heavenly Department of Health equips him with a flawless body and sends him to stop a demonic ritual. He succeeds and in the process saves the intended human sacrifice, Nora, a beautiful and mysterious woman who sparks feelings he can’t identify or understand. To his misfortune, our hero finds fragments at the ritual site from the long-lost Book of Remedies, a powerful artifact Demons could claim to reshape the world in Hell’s image.
Just as he was so close to Heaven, his mission takes an unexpected turn—he must now find the Book of Remedies before the Demons do and destroy it. Battling both mortal and supernatural foes through desert war zones where loyalties shift like sand, he faces treachery, betrayal, and temptation—especially when fate reunites him with Nora, who joins him on his quest… and in his bed. And just when he thinks he’s earned redemption, he discovers his “final” mission is only the beginning…
Strap in for a supernatural thrill ride as John Constantine meets Indiana Jones on a globe-trotting quest spanning physical and spiritual planes in a hunt for a dangerous artifact sought by Angels, Demons, and humans alike. Fans of James Rollins and high-stakes urban fantasy will love this romantic, action-packed adventure.
This novel combines elements from Constantine, Supernatural, The Prophecy, and an action hero style adventure, blending the vibe of Bond and Ethan Hunt. The story flows smoothly, and the creative, engaging concept of an afterlife populated by bureaucratic angels and swirling celestial politics adds a unique and captivating touch.
It's clear that the author is a big Star Wars enthusiast. You can spot gentle hints sprinkled throughout, like the mention of the Khyber Pass and references that remind us of the iconic cantina scene. Fans will surely appreciate these clever nods and enjoy catching the wink!
The pacing is solid, the conflict keeps the plot moving, and the characters are interesting rather than generic. I especially enjoyed the portrayal of the angels; their arrogance made them memorable.
From a Christian reader’s perspective, I found the protagonist working with demons a bit unsettling. While one adult scene added some depth to the character, the repeated sexual encounters started to feel a bit excessive over time and gratuitous.
The adventure remains engaging and full of imagination. It's a really enjoyable read overall, and I would happily choose another book by Buchman anytime.
Redemption Post Mortem is a fast-paced, imaginative paranormal thriller that blends cosmic bureaucracy, theological satire, and globe trotting adventure into a sharply entertaining ride. Buchman constructs an afterlife that feels both absurdly familiar and dangerously unstable where angels feud like politicians, demons mop floors and play cards, and salvation comes with paperwork, caveats, and hidden agendas.
At the center of the novel is a nameless soul whose quest for redemption becomes anything but straightforward. The hunt for the lost Book of Remedies propels the story across physical and metaphysical battlefields, while raising thoughtful questions about free will, memory, and the cost of moral shortcuts. The chemistry between the protagonist and Nora adds emotional weight without slowing the narrative, and the escalating stakes keep the story firmly in thriller territory. Balancing humor, action, and existential tension, Redemption Post Mortem delivers a concept driven story with cinematic momentum and surprising heart.
This book had a few problems which could have been fixed with a more careful pass by an editor, but the story was unique and interesting. I enjoyed reading this. It's a mix of so many different genres that it's hard to put a label on it. It is a paranormal thriller, with some fast-paced action, an Indiana Jones style, global treasure hunt, a slight bit of spice, and some clever writing. Imagine that the universe is run by a bureaucratic organization of angels and demons working together, and they have tasked the soul of a recently deceased individual with carrying out their dirty work. That is the gist of the story without giving too much away. This wasn't close to the best book I've ever read, but it was good.
I received this book as a result of a Goodreads giveaway. I had a really hard time getting into this book. I don't love the writing style and gave up around chapter 7. I think the banter between the characters and the forced hatred was a little over the top. This might have been easier if it were an audio book. I think this is one of those books that a talented narrator could totally change the experience.
Redemption was wildly entertaining. The afterlife bureaucracy is clever, the stakes are high, and the twists keep coming. Blending, paranormal thriller, dark humor, and romance this story delivers nonstop momentum. It is fresh with a great take on angels and demons.
