I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
The book Between a Roc and a Hard Place, by E.J. Tanda. This book had my attention from the very beginning. I had such a hard time putting the book down when I was reading. This book explores Sofia’s and Roc’s background with an already fragile relationship that is trying to find a way to grow stronger. His protective demeanor of her and her defensive approach to him sets the book up for a whirlwind of action and romance. Truly one of top books of my summer reading list.

WOW! WOW! WOW!! I inhaled this book!! E.J., you did it again! I read this during the Texas ice storm and it was the perfect time to be snowed in with a good book.
If you love dark mafia romance, this one is for you. E.J.’s character development is insanely strong. You will fall in love with these characters, and somehow she still manages to make me cry with every book she writes! 🥹
This is a standalone, so you do not need to read the Matriarch Series first. That said, I highly recommend that you do 🤌 Characters from that series are mentioned, and it makes everything hit harder if you already know them. I loved seeing familiar characters from Crown of Confessions and finding out what they have been up to.
About halfway through, the story does get dark, so I strongly suggest checking the trigger warnings before continuing.
If dark, emotional mafia romance is your thing, I highly recommend this book. I cannot wait to see what E.J. writes next.

This is EJ's BRAND NEW standalone book, set in the Mafia world we explored in her Mafia Matriach's duology.
This time our strong female main character is none other than Sofia.
We briefly meet Sofia in the Duology as she is the one who ultimately hires Barbara so while we HAVE briefly met her, I was so excited to learn more about Sofia and her life.
Sofia is a high-powered defence attorney, who works for The Family defending members accused of some heinous crimes.
She is fierce, determined and demands respect in the courtroom though sometimes has to result to underhanded measures to get the outcome the Don wants.
But then she fails... and our story begins.
I love Roc! Roc is brilliant as her bodyguard and I also loved how EJ portrays his own struggles with being a Military Vet. It really highlights the real world struggles of service men and women.
The story itself has a different vibe to the Mafia Matriach Duology and it honestly works! It's still dark but has a thriller element woven within the story, with the cat and mouse game that Sofia and Roc are playing to keep hidden and safe.
As always EJs story throws you into the story and I love it! We start with a tense event from the past and then tension just builds and builds from there, which kept me hooked and wanting to read more and more.
I am a massive fan of EJ's work and I love EJ keeps me surprised and hooked in every book she writes, and there are lots of belting 😱 moments!
If you love Mafia Romance but want to a book with a different vibe to the darker Mafia Romances available (saying that do check out ths trigger warnings!) then I highly recommend this one to you - it is utterly fabulous!

Sophia is the definition of a heroin she is selfless yet cunning witty and level headed.
Rocco is a trained made man and he proves it time and time again this book threw me back and forth with this couple because Rocco’s goal is to protect his soul mate HOWEVER Sophia always following breadcrumbs to trouble. lol
Sophia & Rocco have cameos in this authors other duology and IYKYK she can talk herself out of just about anything but she also talks herself into trouble. lol
This book was written beautifully there are layers and depth to the characters and the turmoil that plagues each one.

Where do I begin??
Having read EJ‘s two previous books, of which I thoroughly enjoyed, this was the crowning jewel that tied everything together from all characters mentioned in book one and two and the ending was, for me, the perfect, perfect ending.
One of my favorite genres, although I will say not, my only is historical fiction. I have to say, as I read this third book, I often felt the various subject matters ranging from PTSD to war crimes, to human trafficking, to ethical issues most Attorneys struggle with, were relevant and relatable today.
As with historical fiction, I do not believe this was based on a single individual or multiple individuals that were known historically to be in the mafia, but the subject matter, as it was written, I can’t help but believe there was numerous threads of truth throughout.
Throughout all three books, there are always words of wisdom that Sophia and Roc carried with them, whether it was from a cousin, a grandfather and aunt or parent.
It created a base of strength for both characters till the very end.
I loved this book. I loved everything about it but to circle back where I started this review, the ending was my absolute favorite for many many reasons, although this would not be the place or time that I would expand on that.
You will have to just see for yourself!!!
Bravo EJ.
Now take that long well earned rest now, before you pick up that pen and paper again.
I will be waiting for the next jewel to be released that you will share with all your readers!

I absolutely loved E.J Tanda’s Mafia Matriarch Series and was thrilled to learn she was writing a spinoff about Vi’s tough-as-nails-lawyer-to-the-mafia-niece Sofia! E.J. Tanda’s books are full of emotion, drama, and unforgettable characters, so I knew I was in for a treat! Between Roc and a Hard Place delivered on all fronts!
Sofia and Roc were such interesting characters to read about. Their journey of trauma and healing both broke my heart and mended it within the span of 30 chapters. Readers who enjoy stories that feature overcoming trauma and an emphasis on mental health will find this story particularly satisfying.
One of my absolute favorite parts of the book were all the little Easter eggs for readers of The Mafia Matriarch series! From memories of Zia, Sophia’s craving for a certain wine, and a very specific deli themed message the characters need to text to Alessandro if they need help, their are plenty of fun surprises for the attentive reader to notice. However, the story is completely enjoyable all on its own, so don’t feel like you have to read E.J. Tanda’s backlist before you pick this one up!

Oh my goodness … Between Roc and a Hard Place is a stand alone novel that tells the back story of two well loved characters, Sofia and Roc from the Mafia Matriarch’s series. This is romance at its finest amongst the gritty world of life in ‘the family’. Roc and Sofia’s story began in childhood and now comes full circle in this compelling read. The story deals with hard hitting themes, told sensitively, but not losing the reality of the situations the characters find themselves in. The story telling is sublime and one can imagine themselves there in the pages, in the scenes, watching as the drama and the story unfolds around you. The level of drama is just right, enough high octane scenes to keep you engaged, interspersed with humanity, realism, and above all else strong, abiding love.
The novel left me astounded, amazed, intrigued and brought my inner romantic to the surface at pivotal points. This has to have been one of the best books I’ve read so far in 2026. E.J. Tanda is up there with the greatest of mafia writers and will remain my number one in the mafia romance genre.

EJ!!! This one was SO freaking good. Mafia romance that had everythinggg.. Just enough spice 🌶️..trauma, second chance lovers, action, close proximity, and twists I genuinely did not see coming. From start to finish it felt like watching a really good episode of Law & Order that you’d rewatch over and over again.
Let’s talk about ROC… yeah, I get it now. A raw, badass MMC who was truly THAT guy, but still layered and emotional in all the right ways. And Sofia!!? A powerhouse FMC. Smart, capable, a lawyer who absolutely didn’t take anyone’s shit and held her own every step of the way.
I never knew what was coming next, and that made this such a fun ride annd I binged this book in 24 hours! Easily a five star read for me!! I’d reread this again without hesitation.
I need the next book immediately. And honestly? This needs to be a film.

Oh boy was it good to be back with my mafia family, albeit a new generation. This book felt both similar to Tanda's previous, but also darker then I remember them being. That could be my bad memory though!
I found myself really liking both Sofia and Roc, despite them being the kind of people I would be terrified of in real life. And, whilst Sofia is obviously fantastic at her job, she gets criminals released back into society. Which isn't a good thing in real life.
The plot was exciting and tense, at times there was a real sense of danger. And those spicy scenes had me hot under the collar! Whew! The organised crime element felt so real that I wouldn't have been surprised to read about it in the news.
Ultimately, this was a story about family, and the bonds that tie us to them, love, justice and survival.
I absolutely loved this book, with some characters from Tanda's other works, and plenty of new ones.

Between Roc and a Hard Place is a stand alone our FMC Sofia and MMC Roc. A love story that starts from a young age between two phenomenal characters who have many ups and downs. The love of her lives pulls a vanishing act left out FMC to pick up the pieces and move on. The story is full of drama, we are taken into this world between the two. At times it felt like should I be here witnessing this. Sofia is a bad FMC from a family who cant be touch to a bad courtroom chick she is one who you root for. Our MMC will be the one who breaks her but he is also the one who makes sure no-one comes near our girl. The tension, the heat and love and hate come out in the pages and it was definitely a good valentine day treat to fill your heart.

It's the constant threat of being found.
It's the possibility of their first flame of love reigniting.
And it's heartbreaking, jaw dropping, gut punching revelations of the past that tore me apart!
Roc is hard, cold, and deadly accurate in his job but has the ultimate warmest softest heart for Sofia - and always had. Neither of them ever really lost their young love for each other. But there are some unimaginable things from the past that might keep them apart forever.

The best book for 2026!!! Roc and a Hard Place is so sexy, exciting and full of danger! There are dark moments of life and death that keep you captivated and following every word on the book page. But then there is light in the dark that is the love between Roc and Sophia. They just can't ignore the spark from the flame that is lit between the two of them. I just want to scream!! These two are so steamy and sensual I can't help but embrace the magic between them!!!! It is a MUST READ!!!

About 70% of the story felt like a cozy second-chance romance, which was enjoyable but a bit slower-paced. The action really comes at the end, and it is so worth it—I devoured the rest of the book within an hour. If it seems slow in parts, definitely keep going! EJ Tanda does it again! I received an ARC and let me tell you Tanda does not disappoint. She nails the spiciness, the yearning, the heartache. Once you pick up this book, you will not want to set it down. Sofia and Roc may have their own stories to tell but the nods to the previous Mafia Matriarch Series books are everything. I highly recommend!

love it !
Good read ! I was sucked into the stories from the start. Once I saw streets that are my every day commute it literally made me feel like I was in the story. I cried? Laughed and got mad with them. I cannot wait to read more books by her.

I was able to read this as an ARC. I don't always enjoy mafia romance but this one was good. There's love, there's war, there's a little yearning. Overall this was a good read!

Roc is ex-military and when he is put on assignment to his first love, he has to fight the battle inside his head to control his re-ignited feelings for Sofia. His main goal has to be to protect Sofia at all costs...
This wasn't my favorite read but I could see it being perfect for other people. Between Roc and a Hard Place was fast-paced and action packed but it just wan't the right book for me.
