From the book Travel Safety is must reading for anyone considering journeying away from home for any reason, business or pleasure; by any mode of transportation, private or public. The two authors, Jack Adler and Thomas Tompkins, have had extensive travel experience, for business and pleasure, solo, with associates, and with family members -- they know what they are writing about. They begin with the four basic rules for safe travel, [i.e.] travel during which you can enjoy yourself without excessive worry and without being deprived of some of your possessions... From there they proceed with advice for keeping you, your family, and belongings safe no matter what your destination. And none of what they advise necessitates spending a lot of money -- only a little forethought and reasonable caution.
