ARC Review!

This was my very first book by Steffanie Blais and I had such a dang good time with it! She had me hooked from the very first page and did not let go.

This book hit me with so many plot twists I didn’t see coming, and I loved every minute of it! The suspense kept me turning pages, and just when I thought I had things figured out… BAM another twist.

If you love a second chance romance packed with suspense, spice, emotional angst, shocking twists, and a CLIFFHANGER, I highly recommend this one! 😅

I will now be writing down all my notes and theories so I’m fully prepared for book 2 because I need answers after that ending. 😂

I’m also completely obsessed with the characters. And can we talk about Gabe for a second?! I absolutely loved his character and I’m really hoping the author gives us Gabe’s story soon because I need to know more about him! 🤭

Hey, everyone! Welcome to Wildhaven. This is the first book in an eight book series, each featuring a different couple. The villain arc spans the entire series, so they should be read in order, starting here. Happy reading!

Thank you to the author for providing an advance copy to review!

Steffanie Blais is so great at blending romance and suspense in a way that is entertaining and sexy. In this book, she merges past and present seamlessly and I love the push and pull between Luke and Isla. The town of Wildhaven is a character in and of itself, with secrets that this series is only beginning to uncover. So many wrenches got thrown in and it kept me guessing right up to the cliffhanger at the end!

This is my first book by Steffanie Blais and I’m a huge fan!

This book was so twisty I loved it! Often I thought I figured things out and there was another twist. It was so well intertwined with the romance.

I’m looking forward to the rest of these books especially after that cliffhanger 🫣

Huge thank you to Steffanie Blais & House of Hearts lit for the ARC

I was so excited to start a new series by Steffanie Blais. This didn’t exactly disappoint me, but the further I got into the book, the more I could guess where the story was going… and I was right. That said, the book was still great! It’s a second-chance romance with some suspense thrown in.

Isla and Luke were best friends growing up until something forces them apart. Isla leaves and cuts everyone off, never looking back. Ten years later, she finally returns after her mom’s death—which in itself is suspicious, but that’s another story. Back in her hometown of Wildhaven, she runs right into Luke. I really enjoyed the chemistry they shared, though both were understandably guarded given their past.

As the story progresses, secrets are revealed and even more hidden truths come to light. People show their true colors, and it leads to major changes. Like I said, I wasn’t exactly shocked by where the story was going, but I still really enjoyed reading it. I cannot wait to see what’s next in this series!

First off this book will leave you on a cliffhanger. Be ready to need the next book desperately 🤣

Isla and Luke are young love that life through terrible things at them, and when Isla ends up back in town, will Luke’s hate for his high school sweetheart keep their wedge between them or will that hate show its true colors?

Luke is the local town Sheriff and when his sleepy little town gets a storm blowing through it he proves that he will do anything to protect his town and his heart.

Islas past is something she has always carried with her, and when she is forced to go back to her childhood home she will do anything to get in and out as quickly and as few people who see her.

Little do either of them know that their troubles are more interconnected than either can ever know.

✨ARC Review✨
When the Smoke Clears by Steffanie Blais

This was my first book by Steffanie Blais—and it definitely won’t be my last. She hooked me from page one and never let go. At this point, I think it’s official: romantic suspense has earned a permanent spot on my must-read list. I love a romance that has something real—danger, tension, high stakes—and Steffanie absolutely nailed that balance in Isla and Luke’s story. The suspense had me flying through pages, needing to know what would happen next. If you’re into second-chance romance with spice, emotional angst, shocking twists, and a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

Luke and Isla’s dynamic had me completely invested—the push and pull between them felt so real and layered. And Wildhaven? Honestly, it feels like a character all on its own, full of secrets that are just starting to surface. As the story unfolds, you begin to understand just how much went into their breakup. Both Isla and Luke are carrying so much, and those glimpses into their past—before everything fell apart—make their present-day interactions even more emotional. Watching them reconnect (even awkwardly) and slowly find their way back to each other was so compelling.

Synopsis: Isla and Luke were high school sweethearts who always believed they’d end up together. But one night changed everything, and Isla left Wildhaven behind. Now, ten years later, she returns after her mother’s death, inheriting her childhood home. Luke never left—he’s now the town’s sheriff—and from the moment Isla is back, it’s clear their story is far from over. Old feelings, buried pain, and unfinished business come rushing to the surface.

Favorite Quotes:
“Some fires don’t burn out—they wait for you to come back.”
“Not all of us can have an epic love story.” … “My love story never had a chance to be epic.”

You know those moments when it seems like an author falls into your lap, and after one book you know they’re going to be one of your auto buy authors? That’s me right now with Steffanie Blais.

I signed up for this ARC on a whim. I swear I looked at the cover and blurb and signup posts a million times before I finally bit the bullet and it’s like somewhere the universe was shouting at me to pick it up. Then I got the ARC and I had others before it, and for some reason I decided to move it up on my list. Then I picked it up and could not physically put it down. I read until my eyes were closing on their own volition and my kindle was repeatedly hitting me in the face. I woke up at 6am the next day and picked it up again until I finished it. SIX AM ON A SUNDAY!

I have never loved a book with a cliffhanger so much. Isla is back in town after her mom passed, not intending to stay, and her ex Luke is not too pleased. Might be because when Isla skipped town a decade ago she disappeared without even saying goodbye. Of course, there’s more to the story than that, but readers learn all the details right along with the characters and let me tell you, it is one wild ride.

Isla is strong, capable, and has established a new life for herself in San Francisco. Luke is the town Sheriff who has moved on from his high school sweetheart, even though seeing her back in town still stings. Together they have to figure out what’s happening in their quiet town while at the same time learning to work with one another and see if the trust and spark is still there (spoiler, not really a spoiler - it still is).

I love a good romantic suspense book. It gives you all the elements of a small town romance you crave, while adding some real excitement into the story. Steffanie Blais did a beautiful job blending the rebuilding of Luke and Isla with everything else being thrown their way and I was in her DMs more than once with my theories and emotions. This series is going to be eight books long and I can’t freakin’ wait.

First, I’d like to thank Steffanie Blais and House Of Hearts for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest and spoiler free review of When The Smoke Clears which is the first book in the Secrets of Wildhaven series.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Thoughts:
If you are new to my little corner of the book lover universe, then let me tell you that I love romance books with suspense! I personally need some sort of suspense or challenge in my romance books that the characters have to overcome in order to cut through all of the romance. And let me say that Steffanie did such an amazing job at mixing suspense into the story of Isla and Luke.

This book is a second chance at finding love between Isla and Luke. The more you read, the more you realize that so much went into why Isla and Luke didn’t last in the first place. With a lot on both of our main characters shoulders, we get beautiful little glimpses of their life before tragedy hit and now when Isla returns to Wildhaven, we as readers get to witness all the moments that lead up to them working together, even if it’s awkward and challenging.

I know my review seems a bit vague but I do not want to give anything away with this book. As the title of the series suggests, Wildhaven has lots of secrets wrapped up in its cozy little town that I think readers will enjoy trying to solve for themselves. Just know that not everyone in town can be trusted and it’s important to watch your back and also find your own little found family in order to stay safe and sane while reclaiming your life in Wildhaven. What I can say is that Isla and Luke definitely have some great banter and sweet chemistry that made me cheer for them during the entire book. I’m also so curious about other characters that I cannot wait to see what books we get next in this series!

This is book 1 in the new series Secrets of Wildhaven. Wildhaven does have its secrets. This novel is a romantic suspense, small town, second chances, childhood sweethearts, with high angst.

Isla has been away from her hometown of Wildhaven for 10 years. Isla ran and left her first love, Luke, behind without a reason for leaving. After her mom dies Isla has to go back to settle her mom's affairs. Upon returning to Wildhaven Isla is immediately met with trouble again. Luke seems determined not to give Isla another chance.

Luke is the sheriff now, much to his father's disapproval. As hard as it is, Luke doesn't want to see Isla hurt. Eventually, Luke and Isla team up to uncover what's really going on in Wildhaven. Whoever ran Isla out of town 10 years ago hasn't given up.

Isla gets a happy ending. However, there are still secrets and mysteries to solve. I think those will carry over to the subsequent books. Luke has plenty of siblings to occupy the next books. I am excited for Savannah and Gabe's book. While some situations are resolved, I feel like that was a red herring, much like the red ruby. There's a bigger picture at play here yet to be revealed.

Thank you to Steffanie Blais for providing me an ARC.

SPICE 🌶️🌶️

First of all, Steffanie Blais, I am speaking to you…you are a phenomenal storyteller!! I could NOT put this book down! I was looked from the beginning. And this is not the first time you have had me hooked with your stories!!

I discovered this author through her hockey series, Merrimack Mavericks, and then her Christmas novella, Charming Nicholas Saint. And now she has introduced me to romantic suspense!! All three are completely different styles of writing and she has mastered them beautifully!!

Luke Wild is the sheriff of Wildhaven, the small town he grew up in. Isla Rae is his high school sweetheart that disappeared from Wildhaven ten years ago. He is carrying heartbreak and anger, she is carrying heartbreak and secrets.

The town of Wildhaven is essentially a character itself. The secrets it holds are just starting to unravel in book one of this series and I can’t wait to find out more!!

I don’t want to give anything away with this book, especially since it is a suspense book. But I will say that I loved the way these two work through their feelings after coming face to face again. It is natural and authentic. You just know that no matter what these two are truly meant to be together.

This book does a wonderful job blending suspense and romance, with just a dash of spice! And the cliffhanger…WHAT?!?!? Yes, that is right there is a cliffhanger and it is a doozy!! I highly recommend reading this book!!

Tropes/ Micro tropes:

💙 Second chance lovers with unfinished business
🏡 Returning home

💙 Sheriff hero/ capable heroine (not a damsel in distress)

🏡 Small town full of secrets

💙 Forced proximity

🏡 Found family

OH MY. This book was so good. I was completely engrossed in this book from the first page. The mystery, the drama, everything was so good! But the cliffhanger! It is almost cruel the way she leaves the story, but it also makes me want to read the next one right now! I NEED to know what happens!

This followed Look and Isla. They were high school sweethearts until a fire forced Isla to leave town without telling anyone, cutting all ties with everyone in Wildhaven. Her mom's death causes Isla to come back to town. Isla and Luke have an instant connection again, but he is still hurt that she left. She is in town for less than 24 hrs, receives a threatening message, and almost gets run over. With Luke and Luke's friend Gabe's help, will they get to the bottom of what's going on, or will something terrible happen?

Luke is the town sheriff. He will do anything to protect his town, his heart. and Isla. We need more Lukes in the world. I almost instantly fell in love with this character. Isla is a pediatric nurse at a hospital in San Francisco. She has been carrying secrets and her past with her for the last 10 years. She has been through so much and continues to go through it in this book. She is one tough woman!

I 100% recommend this book, especially if you love second chances, small towns, protective heroes, and suspense. This book is definitely one to pick up and read. Let me warn you one more time, though, there is a CLIFFHANGER that will leave you wanting to read more!!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

In ‘When The Smoke Clears’ we meet Isla Rae and Luke Wild. Isla and Luke were high school sweethearts. They were so close, that even as kids they knew they would marry each other. Unfortunately, one evening changed everything and Isla left the small town of Wildhaven. Now, ten years later Isla comes back to town because her mom died and left her home to Isla. Luke never left Wildhaven, and even became the Sheriff. From the moment Isla comes back to town, it’s clear that there are a lot of unresolved feelings between them.

‘When The Smoke Clears’ was a story that grabbed me right from the start. The writing was easy to follow, the characters were a lot of fun to get to know.. And I loved the strong connection between Isla and Luke. The suspense in this book was also really fun. I must admit I expected what was going on pretty early on, but I still wanted to keep on going to see if I was right.

But honestly, ‘When The Smoke Clears’ was a bit too rough around the edges if you ask me. For one Isla and Luke’s rekindling is way too sudden if you ask me. Especially since they haven’t seen and spoken in ten years. It felt a bit rushed if I’m honest. Also the whole suspense part felt a bit too far -fetched. And then there is this big cliffhanger. I’m not really a fan of those.

‘When The Smoke Clears’ was definitely an enjoyable read, but I didn’t love it as much as I’d hoped.

First, this was my very first book by Steffanie Blais and I have to say... it will NOT be my last!! YOU KILLED IT, STEFFANIE!!

I pretty much thought this book was going to be a standard small town, second chance romance, but it surprised me in the best way. From page 1, I was in it. And I won't lie... the setup alone hooked me. Isla Rae returning home, Luke Wild still carrying the weight of everything left unsaid, and of course the town full of secrets. It gave me that perfect mix of tension and emotional messiness... and baby, I ate. that. up. Okuuurrrr??!

The dynamic between Isla and Luke was truly one of my favorite parts of the book - every scene between them felt charged. So. Much. Tension. I love the way the book explored their old wounds and unresolved feelings without dragging it on and on and on. It felt believable. And dare I say... addictive.

I really liked the family secrets and the mystery woven through the story. I think that added a nice layer and gave the romance something to push against. Even though you get to a point in a book where you know where the storyline is eventually going to go, it still managed to surprise me.

Overall, I have to say... This book was a really good read with a solid storyline and characters who felt real.

If you know me, you know how much I love romantic suspense! When I saw this book and the sign-up I ran for it because 1. It is romantic suspense, and 2. It is a new author to me!

I loved this book! I will be honest, a second chance is not usually my favorite, but this one was done so well.

This book offered everything. You get a suspense/mystery plot, a fun siblings' dynamic/relationships, a close friendship, and a second shot at romance for our main couple, Isla and Luke.

Luke and Isla are just one of those couples you know are meant to be together, and you root for them from the beginning. We see their struggles and the walls that they both had built up slowly come down between them and we see them heal and grow together as couple.

I also loved Gabe! His friendship with not only Luke but Isla was so sweet. He was the protective brother Isla never had and best friend and support system for Luke. I can NOT wait for Gabe's book.

This book was also the perfect balance of plot, character story and spice. It was perfectly balanced and I really enjoyed that.

Now this book does end on a cliffhanger but not for our main couple. I highly suggest reading this if you are a fan of romantic suspense!

Thank you House of hearts and the author for the arc in return for my honest review

Thanks to Steffanie Blais and House of Hearts for the gifted copy, all opinions are my own.

This was such an entertaining novel.
The reason I love romantic suspense is because we can have both, the romance and a mystery, which keeps you invested in the storyline at every moment.

The relationship Isla and Luke had in the past was so special since it was rooted in trust and comfort they didn’t have in their homes. So it was really good to see them find each other again and to have the opportunity for a second chance, now more mature and with their goals clear in mind.

As for the mystery part, the plot was really interesting and had many “what is going on now” moments. The only thing that I would mention is that it was a bit predictable, but that didn’t stoped me from being invested in the story.

I felt that the story was moving a little too fast at the beginning, but it still wrapped up good. I would recommend this novel to those who want to start reading suspenseful romances since it was a very easy read or to those who want to discover a new author.

Can’t wait to discover what happens in book 2.

I really wanted to like “When the Smoke Clears”, but unfortunately it just didn’t quite work for me. The premise had a lot of potential with the second chance romance, a small town full of secrets, and the tension between Isla and Luke after a decade apart. I love a good “forced to return to your hometown” storyline, and the emotional history between them should have made this really compelling. But the pacing ended up being one of the biggest issues for me. The story felt like it took too long to actually get to the point, and there was quite a bit of repetition throughout the book. It felt like some thoughts and conflicts were revisited over and over again without really moving the plot forward. Because of that, the story started to feel a little drawn out. I also struggled with how scattered the plot felt at times. There’s also a big reveal later in the story that’s meant to be a major twist, but it felt fairly predictable early on. Because of that, the payoff didn’t have the impact it probably should have. Overall, the concept was interesting and the small town had promise, but the pacing, repetition, and predictable plot elements made this one a bit of a miss for me.

Isla Rae left her hometown ten years ago,and she didn't plan to ever come back. After her mother death she don't have a choice, and she's back to her old house and first love.Luke Wild never forgive Isla when she left all those years ago without a word. Now someone wants Isla out of the way and he as a sheriff needs to protect her, living with him is just to keep her safe, right?

Both hurt, will they trust each other ever again?

It was a engrossing romantic suspense that I could not put down.Isla just wanted to sort out things of her mothers, and be back to her life where she belived keep her loved ones safe.Luke was so hurt but still can't keep away from Isla,he was in such turmoil. Both have this great chemistry and unresolved feelings for each other,it was a tension filled story.Suspense in this book keep me on my toes.I really wanted to find out who is the bad guy,and this book didn't disappoint,it seems that Book one only scratched surface of the secrets. Can't wait for book two, because the ending was just shocking. My first book by this author and hope to read more.

I was hooked from page one of When the Smoke Clears by Steffanie Blais—and it did NOT let go.

This book had me on edge the entire time in the best possible way. The tension? Immaculate. The atmosphere? Chilling. I’m talking full-on heebie jeebies from start to finish—and honestly, I loved every second of it. There’s something so satisfying about a story that can creep under your skin like this and keep you constantly questioning what’s coming next.

Blais does an incredible job building suspense while layering in just enough unease to make you feel like something is always slightly… off. Every twist had me leaning in harder, and just when I thought I had things figured out—NOPE. Think again.

This was eerie, addictive, and impossible to put down. If you’re looking for a book that will keep you unsettled (in the best way) and fully invested, this one is absolutely worth the read.

Thank you to the Steffanie and House of Hearts Lit for the gifted ARC!

Holy amazing start to a new series! When the Smoke Clears by Steffanie Blais is the first book in the inter connected series, Secrets of Wildhaven. It is incredible!!!

This book kept me on the edge of seat the whole way through…I was pulled in right from the beginning. I adored Isla and Luke, but the big question…why did Isla leave her beloved small town and perfect boyfriend Luke so many years ago? That question and more are answered as the mystery unfolds. Stefanie’s trademark imagery and spice just make this read even better! The chemistry between Luke and Isla was so hot!

Everyone is a suspect in this book so read carefully and pay attention! You don’t know who you can trust. When the Smoke Clears is the perfect set up for this suspense series. I’m so excited to see where it leads and who is at the bottom of this mystery!

Thank you to Steffanie Blais for the honor of alpha reading this book!

New to me author.... Again I am struck with the idea that there was just TOO much going on in this book! Now the one thing I can say is that it was, again, all related to a central point. But CLIFFHANGER WARNING!!! This book ends on a cliffhanger! The couple in this book is "together" by the end, but I wouldn't really say that it has an HEA because there still seems to be a lot of family drama that leads into the next book in the series, which sounds like it will be Luke's sisters (and I think probably Gabe, Like's best friend). So while I am happy that Luke and Isla worked through some things.... the family, and the town's story continues.

I did like the writing, and the story was interesting. I kind of felt like spicy scenes were rushed in so that the author got them in there with everything else going on with the story. I would liked to have seen a little more put into the spicy scenes and have them feel a little more organic as opposed to having them in the book just to say that there are some.

Absolutely amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love nothing more than reading a romance with mystery and danger throughout AND I was so impressed with this book.
I was hooked from the start loving the characters that were introduced, the anger Luke felt at losing Isla years before with no explanation and Isla knowing that her return would mean opening old wounds and secrets, but not realising the danger she would face.
With death, deceit, hidden secrets, confessions, forgiveness and then the danger that was around just about every corner, this story just got better and better.
The closeness and help from Luke’s best friend Gabe and his family also was endearing and the romance and spice was spot on.
You will need to keep reading this series to get to the bottom of the mystery / danger that starts to come to light in this story.
I personally can’t wait to read each future story, as the author has done a fantastic job of keeping me captivated and needing to know the outcome.
Thank you Steffanie Blais for the opportunity to read this wonderful story.

Welcome to Wildhaven! This book made my romantic suspense loving heart so happy!

Isla and Luke were childhood sweethearts until a fire had her leaving town. Years later she returns after her mother dies only to find out someone does not want her there.

With danger, lies , snd secrets at every turn, Isla only option to keep her safe is Luke who also happens to be the Sheriff.

The angst between these two in the beginning of the book was so raw and real. You could really see and feel the love that these two had for each other and that it never fully went away .

This could have easily been a one day read if mom life didn’t get away. It was fast paced and hard to put down.

That ending though- one word- DIABOLICAL.
That’s all I am saying! Read and see for yourself.

I’m ready for book 2 and more of the Wild family!

4.25 ⭐️. This one's for Catherine Cowles fans & romantic suspense lovers - you'll eat this book up, just as I did! 🙂‍↕️🫡

When the Smoke Clears hooked me from the very start and I absolutely flew through it! The secrets - both kept and revealed, and the ones that came back to haunt the FMC and MMC kept me completely invested. I literally had to be dragged away from my kindle!

Besides being a big fan of romantic suspense, I’m also a second chance romance lover, and this book kept me FED. 😮‍💨

Ten years ago, Isla fled the town without much explanation, leaving Luke in the dark. Now, a decade later, she’s back to settle her mum’s affairs, but her past, the one she thought she’d left behind, comes back to haunt her.

I LOVED how quickly Luke stepped in to protect her, despite the distrust and anger her return stirred in him. I’m afraid I am just a girl, and if I see a protective man, I’m down for him. 🥰🧎🏼‍♀️

My heart was BREAKING for both of them because of what kept them apart, but especially for Isla and everything she went through ten years ago. I just wanted my girl to be happy and free! Especially after a wild rollercoaster of events that unfolded after she came back into town. Steffanie definitely loves her readers tortured… ESPECIALLY WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER AT THE END!!! 😅

I had the best time reading this book, and I CANNOT wait to read the rest of the series! I loved the supportive circle surrounding both Luke and Isla, and I’m so excited to read their stories! 🥹💙

Thank you so much to Steffanie Blais and House of Hearts for this ARC.

- Romantic suspense
- Second chance
- Lots of secrets
- CLIFFHANGER

Oh, my word. I could not put this book down. I absolutey HAD to find out what happened! And I partially guessed it by the end, but the way the book ended! WHAT????? I need the next book as soon as possible!!!

The small town of Wildhaven has many secrets....and most of them aren't good. But the past has a funny way of not staying hidden forever as our characters find out.

Isla had no intention of ever returning to Wildhaven, but after her mother passes, she only comes back long enough to get her estate settled. Or so she planned. But the past comes roaring down the street to remind her of why she left in the first place...

After Isla left 10 years ago with no explanation, Luke has become an embittered sherriff. He thought he put the past behind him, but it returns unexpectedly and changes his life forever.

There is so much going on in this book that my head was spinning at times trying to analyze every clue. Well done. I am hooked.

First off, that cliffhanger! I am choosing to believe it isnt really that person, but maybe they called it in? I can't give details without ruining it, but I refuse to go calmly with that ending. 🤣

So many great characters in this one! Luke, Isla, Eden, Gabe, Dalton, Chase, Erin, Savanna and Elizabeth. Obviously we don't like Nathaniel and I called that from the very beginning.

In this romantic suspense, you get a second chance slow burn romance with a killer on the loose in the small town of Wildhaven. It is a quick read that holds your interest throughout. Please tell me this will be a series that all of the siblings get their own book and that Sav ends up with Gabe!?!

💘 Lines:
If life has taught me anything, it's that grief isn't a scream. It's a suffocation you don't notice until you're gasping. *facts*

I never outgrew my awkward phase.

You're basically Ghandi...with a gun. (the sarcasm was 🤌🏽)

Maybe some loves are meant to undo you, not redeem you.

Sadness feels too soft for this. Fury, at least, has teeth.

Anger moves things. Sadness waits.

ARC Review: 4.5⭐️
When the Smoke Clears is book 1 in the Secrets of Wildhaven series featuring Luke Wild & Isla Rae.

Isla left town years ago and never planned to return. However when her Mother passes away shes forced to return to her hometown to settle her estate and host a funeral.

Luke is less than thrilled to see the girl who broke his heart when she left town years ago without a trace. Their reunion goes less than ideal however when Isla is almost ran over by a car, Luke grabs her and gets her to safety.

Isla starts to receive messages from an anonymous phone number threatening not only her but Luke too. Can Luke & Isla work together to figure out who is threatening them before one of them winds up dead?

I’ve been loving small town romantic suspense lately and this story had me hanging off every page wanting to get to the bottom of it! Steffaine was a new to me author and I am already hooked on her writing and this series !

Thank you Steffaine & House of Hearts for the ARC!

I really enjoyed this second-chance love story. Isla returns to Wildhaven after ten years following her mother’s passing, carrying deep regrets about how she left everyone behind—especially her ex, Luke. She isn’t looking forward to seeing him again, and when Luke unexpectedly runs into her at his sister’s coffee shop, he struggles to contain the anger he’s held onto since she disappeared. Now he wants answers.

Things take a dangerous turn when someone clearly isn’t happy that Isla is back and attempts to run her over. As the town sheriff, Luke is determined to uncover who is behind the threat and why Isla has suddenly become a target.

The storyline is engaging from the start, with well-written suspense and mystery that keeps you turning the pages. There is a satisfying HEA for this installment, but be prepared—the book ends with a cliffhanger that will definitely have you reaching for the next one in the series.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed this book, and went into it loving the tropes and premise of what the story was going to be.

The chemistry and history between Isla and Luke was great, and I could definitely feel for what they were going through. I liked the concept and plot of the book, but for whatever reason it was I just couldn’t get into the story like I would have liked to. Some parts seemed really rushed, while other parts just didn’t seem to flow as well as I would have liked (that’s just my personal thoughts).

As per my other reviews that may not have received a great star rating from myself, please don’t not read a book based on my opinion as it is just that my opinion. I know people will read and absolutely love this book. And to be fair, I am really looking forward to the next book based on being introduced to the characters here and who the next book will focus on.

Thanks to the House of Hearts for the ARC — all opinions in this review are my own.
