The book I enjoyed less this summer. It wasn't bad, the writing was ok given Modeo isn't some literature writer and the facts were cool, nicely given with some trivia here and there. The entire point is already dated though. Barca is not some unbeaten team and the great rival-Real Madrid- won the CHL time and again. Even won twice these days, even without Ronaldo. And sure Guardiola has left Barca so the total football, or at least his tiki taka is fading but according to the book only the Chosen One could rival Barca. Truth is, the genius but beginner as a coach Zidane dominated them, so there you go.
Modeo tries desperately to write hymns and parallels about how Barca is on a whole other level, quantum football etc etc. True countering its style and system was very hard but it's all part of football, nothing unique regarding the systems or something. Sure the basics are from the innovating Dutch system of total football but beyond that there isn't much. Other teams tried the same thing and failed. It's just that Barca had a great group of players that came together, full with a coach that shaped them. Once they started leaving, the team isn't that good any more. If it was "more than a club" and all about its system how the kids are selected and trained there wouldn't be ups and down over the years. Not to mention that lately Barca wasn't promoting the passing game with players from the academy but the "let's have 3 top forwards to score lots of goals". Now that the MSN is broken, it'd be interesting to see what will happen.

Forse il titolo e il sottotitolo del libro sono sbagliati, certamente a livello commerciale attirava più questo... ma Sandro Modeo non ha solo scritto un libro sul Barcellona, la migliore squadra di calcio degli ultimi 30 anni, ma un vero e proprio trattato che esamina le origini, la nascita, la crescita e l'esplosione del "calcio totale" in Olanda, e di conseguenza la sua "migrazione" verso la Catalogna.
Fin qui niente di nuovo, ci sono decine di articoli, saggi e libri sull'argomento... il fatto è che Modeo ha un modo di scrivere incredibile. È un uomo di scienza, ha una conoscenza della cultura generale così ampia da poter tranquillamente parlare di meccanica quantistica, Pink Floyd e Messi senza farti mai annoiare, anzi rendendo il discorso più fluido, interessante, persino divertente.

Credo sia un libro imprescindibile per chi ama il calcio, vuole saperne qualcosa in più sull'evoluzione del gioco e delle sue filosofie, e vuole accompagnarlo alla "Piramide Rovesciata" di Wilson.
