School Isn't For Everyone (and what you can do instead): A practical neuro-affirming guide to unschooling

Rate this book
Unschooling, a learner-centred educational philosophy, breaks away from the confines of traditional schooling, advocating for a more organic, child-centric approach.

Its essence lies in the belief that learning is a natural and lifelong process. It is cemented in the fact that children are innately curious and capable of directing their own education when provided with a nurturing and resource-rich environment. This book delves into the principles of unschooling, providing insights into its benefits, challenges, and practical application.

School Isn't For Everyone shows what is possible when you leave school behind and start living a life of learning. It discusses the principles that form this educational philosophy, explains how unschooling works, sets out what the parents' role is and explores what children do all day when they don't follow a curriculum. It draws on current theory and evidence whilst sharing practical tips and being grounded in the reality of day-to-day life with children. It does this by including interviews with unschooling families, exercises for parents to help reinforce ideas, listing key points in every chapter and including diagrams to illustrate the concepts being explored.

Whether you are a parent looking for alternatives to school, are already home educating and exploring the possibilities, have found yourself unexpectedly unschooling or are certain that this is the route for you, this book serves as a guide to both understanding and implementing the core principles, taking you on a journey from schooled to unschooled and releasing you and your child into a life full of learning.

A very informative and thought provoking read. I liked the different voices throughout the book of people who were living this life and their reasons for doing so.

School isn’t for everyone is exactly what I needed to be reading! Thank you Heidi Steel for writing such an easy to read, confident boosting, informative book.

We are a home educating family, currently in our second year of doing so. This book is exactly what is needed when you get the wobbles about your home educating journey - and they will come, periodically, and they don’t feel great.

This book is the boost in confidence you need to remember why you are on this journey, what it means to you, and the difference it makes to your little people.

I genuinely believe this book could be helpful to more than just the home educating family. Unfortunately we live in a society that sees stepping away from ‘the norm’ as scary and to be judged. This book can give parents the confidence to do just that, if mainstream education isn’t working for their family.

There is greener grass just the other side of that deregistration email - you just have to reach for it!

Thank you NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publising for allowing me to read this advance copy - it was the perfect timing! #schoolIsntForEveryone #NetGalley #HeidiSteel

Helpful and useful advice. Gives a really good overview of what unschooling is as an educational philosophy as well as how that translates into life in a practical capacity. As a new unschooling parent, this has affirmed what I'm already doing and given me that little bit more knowledge so I don't feel totally adrift.
