As a blizzard seals off a remote Pennine village, a series of uncanny deaths forces police and villagers alike to confront the dark secrets waiting in the shadows of a crumbling house beneath the church.
The gripping police procedural thriller you cannot miss!
One winter's night, a lone figure arrives on foot in a remote Pennine village.
The next morning, as the first heavy snow begins to fall, a man's body is discovered in the village churchyard.
Anne Tilston, one of three sisters living in a brooding run-down house in the shadow of the church, realises that the dead man is her father, a disgraced former senior police officer long estranged from his family.
As DCI Kenny Murrain's team arrive in the village to investigate the unexplained death, a further body is discovered in a nearby field–a young man from the village with no apparent connection to Tilston or his daughters.
With the snow continuing to fall, another body is discovered, and Murrain finds himself stranded with his team in the sisters' house with a seemingly motiveless killer waiting outside in the night.

This police procedural thriller centres around DCI Murrain and his team. It begins at night in the outskirts of Manchester, with a lone figure walking up a Pennine Hill. He is headed to a remote village church yard where he has decided to end his life.
DCI Murrain also dreams this scene, as not only does he have that famous “gut” or “policemans nose” that most fictitious inspectors seem to have, but DCI Murrain also has visions – which he unfortunately doesn't seem to know how to interpret, as yet.
By morning when the body is found, heavy snow has fallen and due to the circumstances Murrain and his team are called in to investigate.
All seems fairly straight forward, an elderly man dying in the snow due to exposure, until the woman who found the body said she believes it is her estranged father, a disgraced former senior police officer.
Things seem to begin to spiral from there, the snow doesn't stop, the team become trapped as the roads become unpassable, and just when things seem like they can not get any worse for the team, more bodies are found.
I really enjoyed this title and found it quite quick paced – I actually laughed when we got to the third body as it felt like the story was still only just getting started. It definitely keeps you intrigued, with lots of twists and turns to the story.
This is the only DCI Murrain story that I have read. I found it interesting to have a police thriller with a different kind of spin to it, to try make it stand out from the sea of crime fiction. It will be interesting to find out how these premonitions and visions develop and if Murrian finds a way to better interpret and make use of them.
I would definitely recommend this title and I will also be watching out for any further stories in the series.

MY THOUGHTS ⭐⭐⭐.5 A dark, atmospheric police procedural thriller set in a small village where the local residents and police are caught in heavy snow and the investigation is hampered by the weather conditions. Forced to remain where they are overnight, the investigating team desperately tries to uncover any possible links between the victims and the motivation for these crimes. The author manages to create a stifling atmosphere, giving the reader a real sense of dread for both the local villagers and the investigators forced to remain where they are due to the heavy snowfall. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Murrain is a smart, compassionate leader, and his team is top notch. This book had me on the edge of my seat with its tantalizing twists and turns. I'm fervently hoping there's a next in the series!
