Alysia Beltran is the featured voice of Catalina in the story. She has a young voice that fit the youth and inexperience of the newly anointed Prime in house Baylor. Even though a few times I thought she might have sounded a little too young, Alysia did a good job with helping to transition the series from Nevada to a new character.
The full cast dramatized adaptation helped to bring a story I already enjoyed to life. I had a lot of fun with all the characters. Especially a up and coming five year old telekinetic with a love of sparkly things. Rogan's voice feels absolutely perfect and is one of my favorites even if he only got a few cameo appearances this time. The sound effects added to the story and didn't feel like they took over as well.
The audio was a great way to re-enjoy this story and get even more out of it.

Diamond Fire is a transition story, it moves us away from Nevada as the main character to Catalina being the PoV for the series. This doesn’t have all of the things that I love in an IA book but please remember that this is a novella and so it isn’t supposed to come with all of the bells and whistles of a full length novel.
① - I think the movement to Catalina as the PoV went well. Nevada has tossed the baton beautifully to her younger sister to take over from here.
② - Everthing with the side characters is awesome as usually. We even get a new Grandma type to love in Rogan’s Mom. She is fan-freaking-tastic and I can’t wait to get to know her better in future books. There is the introduction of another House’s Prime mage who I hope we see in the future. But, Leon steals the show and is fantastic in his new role in the family. I really like this upgraded version of him now that he knows what his magic is and has become more comfortable in his skin.
③ - The actual story. It isn’t as complicated as a full length novel but it is a fun little side show. I figured out where the Crown went pretty early but that was only one part of the story. The other was all the family drama. No wonder Rogan lets people believe that he really doesn’t have any family. There were a few gems in the family but most of them were just awful.
④ - Showing off Catalina’s magic and the potential of what it can do. This is one of those times where when you get to see something from the inside it doesn’t sound as great. I thought it would be fantastic to have Catalina’s power when reading the other series. But it has to be hard to know that you can never relax with a person you like or your power might take hold of them and give them false feelings.
It would be a struggle. I really enjoyed exploring the magic though and the potential it could hold. Plus I’m glad that we are holding off on the potential romance between Alessandro and Catalina until there is a full series to play with it.
⑤ - Catalina’s relationship with Arabella is also in the big win column for me. I love how they fight as sisters and are there for each other in every way. They are so close and protective. I’m hoping that we get to see a lot of Arabella in the future books since she is a great counterpoint to Catalina’s serious side.
I read this in a group and there were a few grumblings. I understand a few of them but just so maybe you aren’t too surprised I’ll just address a few.
① - Nevada and Rogan seem so different. Well, yes and no. To me they seemed a little different and a loof or uncaring in some instances but remember this is from a totally different PoV and so perception is everything. Catalina is going to see both of them differently and just because you don’t see them doing things in the background doesn’t mean they aren’t reacting to situation.
② - Nevada went all Bridezilla on us - Again…did she? I mean there are certain things that she wants in her wedding and doesn’t want to budge on. Plus she and Rogan only wanted a small wedding but they are Primes and so it had to be a big tahdoo There are other things she just doesn’t really care about all that much and so I don’t think she put a lot of effort into the colors of them. I’d feel a little bad for Catalina and Arabella as her wedding planners, but they teased her so much pre-proposal that I feel like a little bit of it is payback.
③ - The resolution of the Kelly Waller plot line wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I’m totally fine with how this particular plot line played out. I thought that it was the perfect wedding present to Nevada and Rogan. With a new series starting up focused on Catalina and some of the other kids a little more I liked that this wasn’t left lingering.
④ - This didn’t feature a romance with Alessandro. GOOD. I need books with the slow burn and intensity of their love story or another love interest inbetween or something. I don’t want it in a novella I need way more pages for that particular story to be told.

“It’s a dark, lawless place, Catalina. So dark.”

But when I saw Alessandro, I wanted to snap my wings open as far as they could go and dazzle him with everything I had, so he would be mine forever. I liked him so much, I had to let him go.

This novella was fast-paced and all about Catalina. Even though it happened in the days leading up to Nevada and Rogan’s wedding, it was not about them or their romance. It was about Catalina stepping up to help with the wedding preparations, but also with every other problem they encountered along the way, such as people trying to poison the cake, an heirloom being stolen, and flowers clashing with the color scheme.
I like that this book was mostly from Catalina’s point of view. It felt like an introduction for her as a main character, seeing as the next 3 books center on her. It’s a bridge between Nevada’s series and the beginning of Catalina’s journey to become the Prime she is meant to be. It shows that she is different from her sister, but I think she will be just as compelling and interesting as a main character. I do hope to see some glimpses of Nevada and Rogan, though, in the next books, because while I am happy to follow Catalina, I know I will miss them.
Rogan’s extended family was too extended (and they all pretty much felt the same), and it quickly got confusing. I mixed up the names and connections between them, remembering only 2 or 3 and mixing up all the rest. It did not really matter in the end, but it was still hard to differentiate them all with their long names and the mild info-dumps we got. I saw, while reading some reviews, that Rogan’s family tree is printed at the beginning of the book, so maybe it would have helped to have it, instead of listening to the dramatized adaptation, but I just can’t resist the dramatized adaptations. They are sooooooo good!
I did adore Rogan’s mother, though, and I feel robbed that we didn’t get to see more of her in the series. I hope to see more of her with Catalina, as she seems to be willing to take Nevada’s sister under her wing, and Catalina truly is lucky, because she found herself a wonderful and badass mentor to teach her all about being a strong and respected Prime.

Continuing my Hidden Legacy reread via GraphicAudio. This quick bridge novella between Nevada and Catalina’s books ties things together nicely. It does a great job positioning Catalina as the lead, but still gives us a little Nevada and Rogan update (there is only 1 chapter from Nevada’s POV). I think the GA adaptations are in the works for Catalina’s books, but I’m not sure if I’ll choose to reread this way again. It will depend on the casting.

GraphicAudio: What a treat! I had a total blast with this novella. I’ve read and listened to this story countless times, but the GraphicAudio version brings a whole new energy to the experience. It’s the perfect bridge into Catalina’s storyline!

Diamond Fire is a novella set in the Hidden Legacy world. It’s an introduction to Catalina the middle sister to Nevada.
I very much enjoyed this novella. It gives us the POV of Catalina. We get a great introduction to Catalina, the challenges and struggles she faces as a coming Prime and a young women. Her gift is not a simple one and it’s one people; including herself do not understand.
Besides seeing Catalina we get to see the preparations to Nevada and Connor’s wedding. It can’t be a simple wedding, Oh No, it has to be big, make a statement; because of who they are. And, last we get a little investigating that Catalina is in charge of.
I loved everything about this novella. My favorite part was finally meeting Connor’s mother. She is so level headed and at the end she connects to Catalina. The investigation/mystery was a great side-plot and lots of fun.
Diamond Fire was a delight. I can’t wait to dive back into this world and learn more about Catalina and see the rest of the Baylor family. I highly recommend this series to Urban Fantasy fans. The world building is outstanding, the romance is solid, and the cast is amazing.

Audio 2020: When we start its Renée Raudman narrating than we switch to Emily Rankin who will voice Catalina's novels. I like the transition from Renée too Emily. It's a great way to introduce us to a new narrator. I loved this novella and how it transitions us from Nevada to Catalina. We see the struggles she has in being a Prime, a young women, and growing up. I enjoyed the narration and can't recommend this series enough either reading or listening.

I'm not entirely sure why the author opted for an inbetween novella. Book 3 ended very abruptly. I think it would have been nice to see their wedding from their perspectives. This was rather detached.

2026 relisten: The next book was released so yes, this necessitated an immediate marathon relisten of the whole series. In this novella, we transition from one character arc to the next. While this book is nominally about Navada and Rogan's wedding, it is also about Catalina growing into who she's supposed to be and setting her up for her own story arc. Ilona and Gordon do this well indeed. On to the next!2026 original: I'm a big fan of Graphic Audio's dramatized adaptations. DIAMOND FIRE is no exception. Fun times. This is the bridge novella between the first trilogy/character arc in the series. In the first three books, Nevada, the oldest Baylor sister makes her way through the magical elite of Houston, falls in love, and now it's wedding season. This book focuses/introduces further the middle sister, Catalina. Due to circumstances and on account of because, Catalina is serving as wedding planner and as we all know, no wedding can occur without drama. For a short tale, there is plenty of that and lots of action. This story leads into the next trilogy, which follows Catalina. I can only hope that GA churns out these three books in short order. Yes, I have them in regular audio, but as mentioned above, I'm a big fan.

How can I enjoy this novella anymore than I already do? Well, by listening with GraphicAudio, of course. I have read and listened to this novella in the traditional ways and enjoyed them and was completely satisfied. However, GraphicAudio produces with sound effects and a full cast and this delights me every book I experience with GA. Ilona Andrews creates fabulous characters and plots and setting with all their series. Their allowing GA to produce their stories simply adds to their particular brand of wonderful.

Basic Plot: Catalina Baylor investigates a missing crown and a threat to Nevada and Rogan's wedding.
Family drama is so much more fun when it isn't your own and you don't have to deal with the fallout. The threads of the various plot points intertwine seamlessly. The Graphic Audio just elevates every bit of the experience to me. With the sound effects and accents of the voice actors, listening is so much fun.

This was such a great novella. A perfect transition from Nevada to Catalina as the lead character in the books. Catalina's powers are so interesting, and watching her explore them to solve issues and come into her own is just great storytelling. The narration was also good as usual. I love the scope of this story as well, narrowed to family drama and scandals.

What a relief that Graphic Audio has improved on the quality of performances from Nevada's books. Burn for Me (Nevada Book 1) was so off the mark regarding voices and personalities that it was the only audiobook I have ever returned to Amazon. I really enjoyed this one and felt once again Graphic Audio caught the voices and the personalities - looking forward to the rest of Catalina's series.

I liked the graphic audiobook but sometimes Catalina's part sounded a bit monotonous, as if the narrator just plain read the text without feeling and as if she was bored by it. It will be interesting to see if the next full book in this series will be better. It seems to be the same voice actor as in the previous Nevada books but she sounds different here. But overall I really liked this audiobook very much.

It’s a transition book. My only complaint is that I had trouble differentiating between Nevada and Catalina at first. I’ll have to relisten but that’s my biggest complaint. Cause otherwise I always love the graphic audio editions.

I wasn’t keen on Catarina’s narrator.
