“Every time a little bit of passion or interest shows up, you lock down and act like it never happened,” he says, his voice softer now. “You don’t need to do that. Not here, not with me.”

Emory doesn’t do vulnerability. As the backbone of Bookmark, she manages to keep everything running smoothly while keeping everyone at arm’s length.

After all, caring too much has always meant losing what matters.

When the owner’s grandson, Rylen, shows up to learn the ropes before taking over the business, Emory’s carefully constructed walls are suddenly under siege. He’s unfairly attractive, effortlessly wins over the regulars, and worst of all, his watchful eyes catch every slip in her carefully maintained indifference..

And now she’s stuck training him.

She convinces herself that the way she notices his cologne is just because the back office is so cramped, that his smile doesn’t affect her, that she’s just tolerating him until his training ends. But between restocking shelves and helping customers, the lies grow weaker and her carefully guarded heart betrays her more and more.

As the line between colleagues and something more blurs dangerously, Emory will have to decide if she’s brave enough to risk her heart on the one man that really sees her… even if he’s about to become her boss.

ARC Review – thank you to Kate Nicole for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I applied to read this ARC because what book lover doesn’t love the idea of a bookstore romance, right? I went in expecting a light, cozy end-of-year read. While the book didn’t fully work for me and took me longer than expected to finish, there were still elements I genuinely appreciated.

One pleasant surprise was how character-driven the story turned out to be. I enjoyed following Emory’s journey, particularly That emotional arc gave the story more depth than a typical romance. It felt like a story of personal triumph for Emory, not just about getting the guy.

The banter between Emory and Rylen was fun and engaging, and I liked their dynamic overall. However, the climax didn’t quite land for me. Emory’s realisation that she loves Rylen felt at odds with her lack of trust in him, and I struggled to reconcile those two things. The conflict felt rushed, and the emotional response made her character feel less consistent to me in that moment.

I also found the writing somewhat repetitive at times, with certain descriptions being used frequently enough to stand out and make me roll my eyes. And while I understand the intention behind the nickname “hedgehog” and its symbolic meaning for Emory, it personally didn’t work for me.

Overall, Shelf Control has heart and meaningful character growth, but some execution choices prevented it from fully clicking for me. Readers who enjoy character-focused romances with emotional themes may still find a lot to like here.

ARC 💖 Thank you!

Emory is the girl who's had people take advantage of her, and told that you should always forgive family no matter what

Rylen has a tragic history and issues with his dad, but a very loving grandmother.

It was an easy and fun read, few miscommunications within, not really my fav trope, but very enjoyable.

I feel the side characters could have been included more. I want to know more about Callie, Clark, Grandma and Mr Wheeler.

Maybe a future book where Callie is the FL. I feel there is a lot to her character to be explored.

Thank you to the author/publisher for providing this ARC.

I requested this ARC because it’s set almost entirely in a bookshop — and honestly, that already felt like a warm hug 📚☕. There’s also a quiet mystery surrounding Mr Wheeler and his choice of books, which I really enjoyed. It’s very much the kind of story that makes you want to curl up somewhere cosy and daydream about owning a little bookshop of your own.

This is a character-driven read that focuses on family relationships and emotional healing, showing how something that seems small or simple to one person can have a deep impact on someone else. I found myself rooting for the FMC throughout, even if I occasionally wished she would stand up for herself a little sooner.

The dynamic between the two leads was one of my favourite parts 💕. Their interactions were quirky, full of gentle teasing, and their relationship developed at a natural, satisfying medium-burn pace. While the main characters were well explored, I did wish some of the side relationships — particularly between Rylen and his grandmother — had been given more space, as those moments could have added even more warmth to the story.

I read this in one sitting, though the book would benefit from some tighter editing, as there were moments of repetition and a bit of telling rather than showing. Still, the cosy atmosphere and lovely premise really carried the story for me.

Tropes: #bookworm #mediumburn #battlingtrauma

Overall, a cosy, engaging read with comforting vibes and a lot of heart ✨

"You were never holding me back. Not for a second. The thought never even crossed my mind. If anything, you've pushed me forward, made me more determined to succeed on my own terms, not his."

Ohhhhh. Emory and Rylen are the cutest!
Literal black cat meets golden retriever in human form!

Where Emory is prickly and (rightfully) stand-offish, Rylen tries his best to have her open up. Once she does and shares some trauma with him, and he does the same, they're literally perfect. Aside from that one miscommunication thing that happened. That wasn't so perfect. But after that!! they're perfect again. Including healthy communication and transparency, that might include a bit too much information.

I do wish we got more story on Sienna and how things ended on her side. I know the way it was between her and Emory but did she ever come back from that? Did she just... listen?

Other than that, super cute read! Cosy atmosphere, found family vibes and an almost 'there was one bed' moment. 🤍

Emory loves working at Bookmark, the bookstore is her comfort place, until the boss's grandson, Rylen, comes along to take over the store. Emory is tasked with training Rylen, she puts up her well constructed walls to stop him getting too close but somehow he can see right through them.

This was a cute romance with bookish vibes, character-driven, focussed on the relationships we build in life and how they can affect our actions. I loved that it had side story lines not connected to the romance but providing family dramas and a bit of fun with the customers in the bookstore. Their relationship wasn't perfect and that really helped me to connect with the characters and made it feel more realistic. The banter between Emory and Rylen provided a nice comedic edge to round everything off.

A big thank you to Kate for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book, all opinions are my own. I absolutely adored it!

I'm impressed by how the book tackled some heavy topics, like family issues like sibling rivalry, and struggling to cope with abandonment and changes. These themes were executed beautifully, tugging at the heartstrings while keeping the tone engaging. The banter between Emory and Rylen was a highlight, and his nickname for her was just perfect!

While the story had its repetitive moments, I couldn’t put it down, read it two days. Overall, it’s a cute read with a mix of light-hearted moments and deeper issues.

ARC Read ✨

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book before it hits the shelves!

This book came into my life at such a perfect time. It’s been snowy where I live and all I’ve been wanting is a cozy romance, and this was perfect!

Emory is a character I think many will be able to relate to. The topics touched on in this book are some I haven’t seen for a while in books that I’ve been reading, and I can’t help but appreciate the careful nature in which they are spoken about. I loved the settings of the book too - they felt immersive and super comfortable!

This was a wonderful read! Thank you again to Kate Nicole for the opportunity to be on the ARC team! 📚

Thank you Kate for providing me with an ARC of Shelf Control

3.5⭐

While I loved the story itself that was a few things that were excessively repetitive. I can only stand to read about the MMC's cologne so many times before it starts pulling down my rating. It's woodys, citrus & something uniquely Rylen btw.

I really enjoyed seeing the growth of Emory though. it made me so happy to see Rylen helping her be more open & confident in showing her love for things but also shutting out the toxicity that was her sister. He knew she could be strong even when she didn't.

Emory & Rylen's story was a good one, I just personally feel like the writing could use another once over to weed out the excessively repetitive descriptions.

Emotional intelligence and growth characterise this lovely story. Kate has developed two interesting and flawed MCs here, who I found myself rooting for, whilst simultaneously wanting to yell at them about their missteps en route to their HEA!

The book captures effectively the effect of living with a difficult family dynamic, and how overcoming trauma in personal relationships isn't a simple forward progression. Emory's own self-doubt, growth and recovery gave me a lump in my throat on several occasions - Kate handled this very sensitively especially when dealing with Emory's sister.

One of my favourite parts of the book was the contrasting relationships between Emory and her sister, and Emory and her roommate. Sienna, Em's sister, is blasé about the permanence of their relationship, believing their biological tie as sisters will override any hurt she inflicts on Emory and giving her free rein to behave as she likes. By contrast, the care and understanding that grows between Emory and Callie, her roommate, is the kind of warm affection and robust support that close relationships should bring to your life, and the reciprocal assistance they provide each other in the book is just lovely. (I hope Callie might get her own book, because I loved her.)

I've managed to write all this without mentioning the male main character, which seems an oversight in a romance book, but I think it's testament to Kate's writing that there were multiple engaging relationships to enjoy in different ways in the book. This complexity added depth and credence to Emory and Rylan (our hero arrives!) falling for each other as they did.

Rylan calls Emory "hedgehog" as a pet name, which is slightly ironic considering his first few appearances show a spiky character himself! However, his behaviour towards Emory is respectful and understanding, and he pushes the exact right amount at the moment she needs it - which of course leads to maybe the hottest book kiss I've read in a long time. Reader, I swooned. I full on put my Kindle down, giggled and scrolled back to re-read it. It was CHARMING, it was passionate, it was heartfelt...it. was. brilliant.

The third act conflict in this book is also portrayed really well - Kate doesn't shy away from portraying Emory's own understanding of her contribution to their fight, or from Rylan's acknowledgement and apology (which is textbook perfect, a bit TOO perfect, if I'm honest) which builds their communication and development. The conflict is of course to be expected, and I was pleased and surprised to read an unusual conflict idea in this book - no cheating, no illness, no malicious ex...just .

I gave this one 4.5 stars out of 5, because the perfection of Rylan's apologies were too textbook (the man apologises, takes responsiblity and makes amends! Repeatedly! Which is lovely to read, but jarred me and broke my immersion in the book, whilst I wondered what therapist was behind-the-scenes coaching him to be so word-perfect and emotionally intelligent.) and That One Character didn't get enough comeuppance for my liking. (What can I say, I'm a mean one.)

Overall, though, an absolutely lovely book, which is being added to the re-read pile, and the old fixation on owning my own bookshop has returned. With a vengeance. Mostly so a handsome man can show up and kiss me in the office, but also so I can get a tree bookshelf myself. Good job, author, you've made me yearn.

I was kindly gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was much different from what I expected going into it, but it was fairly enjoyable nonetheless. While this book is extremely character driven, specifically with our FMC Emory, the characters don't always feel like they are their own. The other characters seem to exist as plot devices for Emory's life-the sister who has to bully her for enjoying things, not allowing her any happiness in life, who she should have gone no contact with as soon as she moved out, who's sole hobby is making Emory miserable. The coworker with almost no dialogue. Even the MMC Rylen is a perfect guy who instaloves her, with no noticeable character development until after the halfway mark. Even his apartment is empty of personality. He exists to be the perfect guy for Emory, who knows exactly what to say and do to tear down the walls in her head she's had to build because of her sister's tormenting. If you don't show excitement at something, they can't take it from you. Only Emory's roommate, Callie, feels like her own person, entirely independent from Emory, but even her character has a convenient plot need to get out of town during the third act breakup. Also, would the daughter of a raging alcoholic really become a bartender? Maybe, but when you grow up around that, often you'll feel sick at the smell of it.

Ok now that I've ranted about the characters, I have to say I felt like the first 20% or so didn't make sense, Emory's motivations didn't line up with what was happening, why she was hiding herself and scared to start a relationship. It isn't until later on we learn that her sister not only bullied her into losing interest with toys and hobbies, she also made sure to steal the guy she was with, and any guy she even looked at. So it makes sense later on, but in the moment, all you know is "don't show enjoyment so they can't hurt you" doesn't line up with "don't acknowledge the hot guy likes you." Once we've cleared the 20% mark, and we finally start learning more about Rylen while Emory's walls start...not breaking down, necessarily, but the gates are cracking open, that's when everything picks up and I could really get into the book. I think anyone who's ever been bullied or had to hear snide comments about their hobbies and interests will really identify with Emory.

And don't get me wrong, I know my reviews sound like I hated everything about this, but I'm just better at talking about what I didn't like than what I did because, well, let's just say I really identified with Emory here.

⭐️ ARC Review ⭐️

Thank you to the author for the advance copy.

This story centers on Emory—witty, funny, and emotionally layered—who works at a small independent bookstore owned by Margie, a warm, grandmotherly presence who feels like the heart of the shop. The novel opens with a fast-paced scene between Emory and her sister, Sienna, immediately signaling that this is not simple sibling rivalry, but something deeper and more calculated. That opening moment sets the tone and pulls you in right away.

When Margie’s grandson, Rylen, arrives to help run (and eventually take over) the store, the real story begins. Rylen is the kind of effortlessly charming love interest who delivers playful verbal sparring and sharp wit—the kind of banter that feels familiar, earned, and genuinely fun rather than forced. As the narrative unfolds, we learn more about Emory and Sienna, slowly piecing together why Emory’s walls are so firmly built. Of course, Rylen notices these things almost immediately.

What follows is a journey of watching a woman learn to take up space, honor her boundaries, and push back against toxic family dynamics in a way that feels deeply relatable—especially to eldest daughters. The emotional beats land naturally, without feeling rushed or overly dramatized, and the pacing remains quick and engaging throughout, making this an easy, immersive read.

I also deeply appreciated the sections focused on Callie, Emory’s roommate. Her story—stepping up to care for her siblings as alcoholism tangles and deflates her family—adds an emotionally grounded layer to the book. The scenes set in Callie’s mother’s home are clear, definitive, and unflinching, leaving you with the strong sense that the author truly understands the raw angst and instability of being a child of an alcoholic.

I did notice some repetition in the descriptive language, though that may also be because I finished the novel in under a day, completely invested in these characters. While the story unfolds smoothly, there were moments where additional background or a slightly slower burn could have deepened the emotional stakes even further.

Overall, this was a fantastic read—fast-paced, emotionally resonant, and highly relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with these characters and am very much looking forward to reading more from Kate Nicole in the future.

3.5⭐️ and 2🌶️

First of all let me tell you about all of the good things about this book:
The premise was so cute and engaging, I loved the characters, the relationships, the main love story between the characters, it was amazingly beautiful and omg so cute!
I like how the author writes (aside from some things that I will talk about in a second) and you can tell it's the authors first book but I know that she can be ao good if she keeps writing! I'm no expert, but I juat can feel it you know? Lol
Going back to the relationships, Rylen and Emory's relationship was cute and entertaining, I love forced proximity, boss-employee and rivals to lovers mix this book had! You would think its too many tropes but they all work together perfectly!🤌🏼

Now, why did my rating go to 3.5 (going lore to 4 than 3)
1.- Too repetitive. Emory told us about Rylens cologne everytime he was near her. Not inly hag she felt his cologne, but how it smelled. After 1-2 times, I don think it's necessary to explain the smell, maybe just say you feel it? Another thing, that girl had everything with a loose thread that she was playing with when nervous, her jeans, a throw blanket, her sweater... there are other ways to show the character is nervous imo. Last thing, the 🌶️ scenes, both started the exact same way, written almost the same way too. She was laying down, she arches her back, he takes the sweater off, says she's beautiful, takes off her bra, takes one breast in his moith, plasy with the other, then changes, then she tells him "your turn" and takes his clother off. SAME THING both times
2.- There were a couple of continuity errors, nothing too bad. One example, they get stranded on another town on a Saturday for a night, they don't work Sundays. Her first thought? "What about work tomorrow?" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ then, it's like it never happens
3.- I think the misscomunication was extremely preventable if the has just given him 5 minutes to explain but she was being too stubborn. I get you're mad, but just get your head out of your ass for 5 minutes and you would have KNOWN THE TRUTH!!

Like I said, I did enjoy the book. 3.5 for me is not bad, I just think there were some tweaks that could have made it better, and I think it's just because it a debut novel.

Shelf Control was a quick and cozy read with a bit of spice. I loved the descriptions of the bookshop and antique stores. They felt warm & vibrant, and the whole setting had that comforting charm that works perfectly between heavier reads.

The main characters were great together (I looooved the mostly direct, upfront communication) and the friendship between Emory and Callie was a lovely touch all through the book, but I often wished for a bit more character development. Some of them felt a little one‑dimensional. For example her sister steals joy, so Emory hides what she enjoys - which was all they did on the page together. The resolution here was super satisfying, though, so I don't mind that we didn't explore Sienna's reasons for being like that. Some characters you love to hate unambiguously.

But I also felt like Rylen’s motivations weren't fully explored, and I loved his story, I wanted more of that! Things like what were his family's expectations that he alluded to a couple of times, why he chose business management education over programming given his passion project, and why he accepted the bookstore situation so easily in just a few short days/weeks. Emory also goes through a lot of learning, but Rylen doesn’t really change. He mostly shows up and is instantly perfect, with the only shift being that he makes space for her things when they move in, because based on descriptions he was a bit of a minimalist. I'd have loved to hear more about reconciling these differences on-page! The final chapter was genuinely lovely, though, and I'm glad they got the HEA they deserved.

Overall, this is a cozy, enjoyable romance with great vibes and charming settings. I just found myself wishing for more because I enjoyed it a lot and it seemed to go by very fast.

If you enjoy sweet, low‑stakes romances with cozy bookshop settings, Shelf Control should be right up your alley!

Shelf control by Kate Nicole is a fast-paced, witty romance set in a bookstore named "Bookmark" which I found reallyy adorable. The book keeps you hooked with its beats and the banter between the characters.
The FMC, Emory, is the one in charge of the bookstore (even if she is not the owner) and the bookstore means everything to her. She is someone who keeps the things that she likes to herself as she fears if she shows too much affection about something, it'll be snatched away from her. Enter, Rylen, our MMC who is going to be the owner of the bookstore as he is the owner's grandson. She is apprehensive of him as she thinks he is either going to sell it off or kick her out considering the bookstore isn't very profitable. But, Rylen is in awe of her the way she manages the store like it's her own.
Margie, the owner, asks Emory to teach Rylen of how the bookstore works so he can carry on the legacy and while that, romance blooms as even with the banter, they realise they are quite fond of each other.
The 70% of the book was quite enjoyable but after that it felt a bit dull to me. Also, what I found missing was Rylen's POV, I know dual POVs is a choice completely for the author but it's just a personal preference that makes me feel that the book would have been better with that included as the way he adores, and notices her, is something I wanted more of and from his POV as well.
Apart from that, the book is very enjoyable and totally unputdownable. The banter, the setting, the nicknames, the way he is considerate of her, their backstories, their personalities, everything leaves you wanting more.
For a debut, Kate did an amazing job, can't wait to read more of her books!

Thank you to Kate Nicole for the opportunity to read this sweet story.

Emory just wanted something for herself: something that she didn't have to hide her excitement of for fear of it being ripped away. But then her boss drops a bombshell that threatens her bookstore sanctuary. Emory will be training Rylen to take over ownership of three beloved bookstore. She is determined to not show Rylen how much the store means to her because she just *KNOWS* that he is going to change everything about it. But, as the past spends more time together, it becomes apparent there is more to Rylen than the world sees.

This story was super cute. I could have throttled Emory’s sister. I swear my blood pressure went up every time she was on the page. I promise, that's not a spoiler. You see it in the first chapter. I loved how Rylen took things slow with Emory, almost like trying to gain the trust of a scared animal. He shows her that she matters and her concerns & wants are valid. I loved seeing her grow and come to accept herself…and Rylen. I adored their dynamic and the humor between the two made me fall in love with them. However, Mr. Wheeler stole the show with special books.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. There was a good mix of light-heartedness and heavier topics, like Sienna and her awful behaviour to her own sister Emory and Rylen and his family issues. Some parts were repetitive and this got to be a bit much and dragged out parts of the story. I loved reading about the secondary characters and would love to learn more, like the very unique Mr Wheeler, and Emory's BFF Callie, who compliments Emily's softness well, with her matter of factness and ability to hit some hard truths while not being a bully, unlike Sienna.

This story is definitely and emotionally driven one with character growth on both sides and although I understood the reasoning for Rylen's nickname for Emory (hedgehog) I personally wouldn't want a nickname with 'hog' in it coming from a coworker/romantic interest, and it just made me imagine Emory with super spiky hair, rather than her prickly outer shell.

Rylen helps Emory open up, despite her past experiences with being hurt by those closest to her but I felt it was almost too one sided initially as he takes an almost immediate liking to her with little reason as to why. I could just do with more from Rylen than constant perfection, to make him seem more realistic.

The open communication parts where they give into their feelings was the most enjoyable bits for me as this is where we learn the most. The banter and quips between the two MCs was fun and refreshing, with levels of honesty and openess in between.

This slow burn story is great for those who enjoy:

Thank you to the author for the ARC copy of this book.

This was a fun book for me. I was laughing out loud a few times and it also had the feels.
I find it a little unrealistic that Rylen is introduced to Emory and immediately wants to act on attraction when she's an employee of the store he is going to inherit, but I can get past that. I loved that he understood her, especially when she was struggling with so many insecurities largely in part because her sister was truly awful and her confidence was absolutely wrecked. I thought it was super adorable that he planned a whole day for them going to all the thrift stores because he knew that was something she loved doing.

The FMC actually reminded me of a friend a little bit in that she felt like she had to keep all of her emotions locked down for fear of something being ripped from her as soon as she showed any interest. I think that helped me relate to the FMC a bit more, because I know someone who has a similar situation, and it is hard to be helpless from the sidelines.

The book got cheesy at the end, but that's not to be completely unexpected. I also really dislike miscommunication tropes, but it didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out as much as other miscommunications, so there's that.

My biggest gripe?? Mr Wheeler and his very strange books was a common thing throughout the book that the characters bonded over. Why did we never learn what his deal was?! I know it is not a central plot line, but I kept waiting to learn more about him and his very strange book requests. I fully expected Rylen to use his charm to find out, and I was disappointed that it was left unexplained.

Emory works at the bookstore she loves—until the owner leaves it to her grandson, Rylen. Suddenly, Emory is tasked with teaching him how to run the store, whether she likes it or not. Long days, shared spaces, and constant proximity mean there’s no avoiding each other… or the tension slowly building between them.

This book is wonderfully cute, funny, and deeply endearing. It’s the kind of soft love that sneaks up on you—quiet, warm, and safe. The romance unfolds gently, without drama or chaos, and I loved how natural it felt.

At first, I didn’t fully understand Emory’s guarded nature, but as the story unfolds, her walls make heartbreaking sense. Watching her slowly open up was incredibly satisfying. Rylen, on the other hand, is steady and sincere—he falls first and hard, but never pushes. He’s patient, respectful of her boundaries, and willing to own up to his mistakes. Green flag behavior all around.

Their banter is one of the highlights—witty, playful, and genuinely fun to read. And the thrift-shopping scene? Absolute perfection.

This was such a comforting, feel-good read. Cozy, heartfelt, and charming in all the right ways.

Thank you Kate Nicole for this ARC.

ARC Review - thank you to Kate Nicole for the opportunity to read Shelf Control!

As a book lover and dreamer of working in a bookstore like Bookmark, I was excited to read this book after finding out about it on threads. I saw the author’s post about ARC sign ups, read the blurb, and instantly knew this was a book I wanted to read. I definitely felt connected to Emory and wanted to learn more about her. Emory and Rylen help each other heal in different ways, and I love the teasing and back and forth in their relationship from the beginning! Also Rylen’s nickname for Emory - hedgehog 🦔- I just think it’s adorable, especially after he explained it. Loved all the different tropes that were brought into play! It was so well written the way Rylen would gently sneak past Emory’s walls and push her in a way that helped her heal.

I kept wanting to read and find out what was going to happen next. The anticipation kept getting to me and I experienced so many different emotions while reading. Honestly made a note on page 9 of my copy that I was already sobbing and just wanted to hug Emory. By the end, I wanted to give hugs to Emory, Rylen, and Callie.

I’m glad that we got to also see some more of Emory and Callie’s relationship near the end. If the author decides to write more on Callie’s story in the future, I’d be interested, and I’d hope we’d get little moments to see Emory and Rylen’s future as well.

Read someone else’s review and forgot to mention the TENSION! Ugh omg the tension was delicious. You feel it right from the start.

This review is based on an ARC opportunity. Thank You Nicole for the chance to read and review this book before it was released to the world.

As a person who loves books I was absolutely excited to read Emory's book-loving story.

Emory's life has been a constant struggle between wanting to show how passionate she is about things and choosing to be guarded after all the ways life has failed her and told her to suck it up and put everyone else's needs before her.

Feeling constantly alone Emory decides that her sister Siena is meant to be forgiven every time she decides that she wants what Emory has or even alludes to something she likes.

Emory has settled into her daily life of helping run "Bookmark"; a bookstore owned by Maggie.
Maggie and Emory work like two peas in a pod and Emory believes that life is best as it's going to get.

----

Rylen is thrown into the chaotic, eccentric and simple world of Emory, when his grandma Maggie, decides it's time to retire and leave Bookmark to him. While Rylen is unsure whether he actually wants Bookmark he knows he'll do anything for Maggie.

During their time working together, Emory's feelings are starting to shift from annoyance to something more she isn't willing to accept.

As the tension between them increase, lines begin to blur.
Will Emory allow herself to become vulnerable, and let Rylen see all things she is passionate about?
Will Siena come in and take all the things that Emory wants?
Will Rylen allow himself to continue blurring lines and open himself up?

first of all, huge thank you to the author for sending this ARC to me, it was my first one ever! and I will forever remember this book!

I signed up as soon as I saw the tropes and what the setting for the book was ( A book store! ). it is definitely as advertised with workplace romance, dislike to lovers, boss/employee, forced proximity🤭 and much more.
the detailed descriptions of the book store, antiques, etc, made the story come to life so vividly in my mind.
this was a cute and cozy read full of fun banter with some slightly more heavy topics included.

But can we talk about the mmc RYLENNNNN?? my shaylaaaa😩 he is just 🤌🤌😍 so sweet and patient and gentle and understanding, ughhhh!!! one of my favorite mmc's in awhile.

Now the fmc Emory, let's talk about her. the family drama/trauma is so upsetting, I feel for her so bad.🥲
Her and callies friendship was my absolute favorite part of this whole book😭😭❤️❤️
Emory is very sweet and I love that Rylen looks after her so well.
but Emory getting unnecessarily irrational over a small miscommunication seemed uncharacteristic for her and kind of threw me off for a second there not gonna lie. I personally think Rylen deserves better than her🫢. HOWEVER, the HEA ending was nice and I did really like this book, I mean come on, its a workplace romance set in a bookstore🥰

I'm giving this book a rating of 3.5 ⭐️

I’ve never felt so seen and validated by a book before. I truly believe so many people will resonate with this story. From the very beginning, I connected deeply with Emory and felt for her on such a personal level. There is so much vulnerability woven into this story that it left me feeling incredibly emotional. Emory has my whole heart — she deserves so much more than what she endured. Her healing journey is not easy, but I deeply admire her quiet strength and resilience.

I absolutely loved Rylen. His charm feels effortless, and everything he said had me giddy and fangirling. He is such a perfect partner for Emory — truly caring, supportive, and emotionally aware. I loved how he gently pushes her when she needs it while still fully respecting her boundaries. The way he loves and shows up for Emory made me fall for him instantly. I do wish we had gotten to know more about him, but I adored him regardless.

There are moments of miscommunication, but they felt realistic and valid for Emory’s story and growth. Overall, Shelf Control is a beautifully written, emotional read that hit me right in the feels. It’s cozy, well-paced, and incredibly sweet. I highly recommend this read when it releases!

This was the cozy bookstore romance it claims to be!! It was cozy and sweet and completely perfect to recommend if you're not sure how much spice the other person likes.

Rylen is asked by his grandmother Margie to take over the family bookstore that Emory has been managing. Em doesn't want to like Rylen and worries that he will change/sell the store and she will be left in the dust.

There were a couple themes that may be difficult for readers (loss of family, alcoholism), but for the most part this is a gradual black cat romance where Rylen breaks down Em's walls to show that he is committed to her. As much as I sympathized with Em and why she was so reactionary in the beginning, I'm definitely a reader that wants the best for the MMC's and I was really hoping she would open herself up earlier in the story. I just hate seeing any character put themselves through extra heartache.

I will say this is open door, but the emotional relationship is established LONG LONG before a physical connection between the MMC's.

I really enjoyed Em's roommate Callie and I am curious to see where her story takes her now.

Thank you Kate for sharing an Advanced Copy of your book!!

One word..TENSION! From the moment they meet you can feel the attraction crackling in the air like electricity leaving a live wire on the ground. You'll need some tissues and some spare undies so buckle up. Emory and Rylen's story is seriously adorable! First of all, the majority of the story takes place in the bookstore she works at and he's set to inherit - SOLD ME THERE! Em has trust issues, and with a sister like Sienna, I'm amazed she even still talks to people honestly. Honestly I feel like Emory is someone I'd be friends with, I get why she is the way she is and honestly seen parts of myself in her - she's absolutely relatable. Rylen's ability to see Em and actually see her was awesome to see, he'd call her out for her things BUT take accountability when he's in the wrong without blaming anyone else. Rylen's reason for developing the software that he did, broke my heart! But it was such a beautiful reason 🥹. And I can't forget about Callie, Em's bestie and roomie who just gets her - and apparently is right more often than Em will admit 😂. Of all the nicknames I've heard, I think hedgehog 🦔 and Rylen's reasoning for that name is too damn cute! Releasing on the 10th, you'll wanna read this one! Thank you @kate.nicole.author for the privilage to be part of your ARC team!

**ARC REVIEW**
3,5 stars

first off al, thank you Kate Nicole for the arc.
In Shelf Control we follow Emory. She just wants something for herself, not taken away by her narcissistic sister Sienna or have her happy feelings destroyed about something she loves.
One of those things is the bookstore where she works. Here we meet Rylen. He is de grandson of her boss. He is going to take over the store from his grandma within a year and she has to train him. While the rivalry is instant, the attraction and tension is too. Due to her past with her sister Emory has built up big walls to protect herself, which makes for a good enemies to lovers story.

While the story was a fun and quick read I must say that the writing has left room for improvement. A lot of things are being repeated, like the description of the smell from Rylen his after shave or how Emory tells events twice or thrice to Rylen. For me that took away from the enjoyment of the book. Besides that, the other thing that made me give it less than 4 stars was Emory herself. 75% in and she started to annoy me. Her character grow could have been more fluent for me.
The spice sense were fun to read though!

Last thing; in this house we HATE Sienna en LOVE Callie

Thanks to the author for an advance copy!
I love a rom-com with some spice, and this one did not disappoint!
When Rylen is hired to take over his grandmother’s bookstore, Emory is terrified that she will lose the one thing in her life that is HERS. She has spent her entire life being overshadowed and belittled by her selfish, jealous sister.
Emory has no problem standing up for herself to Rylen, even as their attraction grows. Rylen seems to take it in stride as he gives her the nickname “hedgehog” (prickly but really cute). As Emory falls for Rylen (and he for her) she begins to realize her worth and eventually stands up to her toxic sister.
In the midst of some difficult family dynamics with both MCs, they work to bring out the best in one another and work towards building a life together.
I would love to read more about some of the secondary characters (Emory’s roommate and coworkers, and the weird old man who hands her a paper with obscure books for her to source every week — what in the world is he doing with those books?). If you’re looking for a light read with a little angst from the MCs that gets resolved, this is for you!

ARC REVIEW 📚✨

Super cute and cozy read! Caught my attention that the prime location is a bookstore, I mean how perfect is that for a romance!

Emory is a reserved character that hides herself so she doesn’t like to wear her heart on her sleeve.
Introducing Rylen, who is the bookstore owners grandson, where he slowly opens her up and finally crack through her wall.

The constant back and forth was brilliant. The slow build yearning and just the confidence they build in each other.

I will admit that it felt repeated towards the end but I couldn’t complain too much as I LOVE them both!

I would have loved to see more of Callie and maybe get more of Margie where she sits down with Emory without Rylen there? Since Emory finds comfort in Margie, it would have been nice to have her more included.

But overall, if you want a cozy romance, then pick this book up when it releases!

Thank you to Kate Nicole and publishers for sending me a free copy of this book in return of an honest review.

This was such a good read. A cute little bookstore that has all kinds of antiques, a love-hate relationship with the two main characters, lovable supporting characters, a story that flows beautifully. I enjoyed this book a lot. I related a bit to Emory—her closed off personality, building walls, afraid of being hurt—I get it. More than I should. But like her, we both had tremendous personal growth. She became the best version of herself and was able to come out of her shell. Rylen—in the beginning, you hate to love him. Charming, annoying, snarky, handsome. But deep down, he’s a big softie and wants to make everyone happy and follow his dream. Both of these characters were imagined so well. It’s hard not to connect to them and feel ALL THE EMOTIONS. I can’t tell you how many times I laughed and felt the true joy and love and even hurt throughout. I love when an author can do that and in the end create a truly beautiful story. I do wish it was a touch longer though because I have a few unanswered questions.

This was another book of what I am starting to love as a theme - bookstore romances. And it was a great one for sure. The spice was nice to have in it, and the story was engaging. It was all told in Em’s first person POV, which was good, and when we got to the end, I could see why a dual POV would have spoiled some things.
I love the dedication of Kate’s to the shop, and the love for all the books, organization, and the way that things run there. As someone who has worked in a bookstore before (most expensive job I have ever had) I appreciated the depth in which it was all explained tbh.
The love that these two found for each other, through bantering and bickering, just made my heart happy. Definitely a great and fun read.

Side note: who needs enemies when you have a sister like Sienna, and Nash to boot! I will also say that Em’s aunt needs to shake her head a bit. There is sibling rivalry, and then there is just vindictive evil.

I am so thankful to Kate Nicole for allowing me to be an arc reader for this.

ARC Review- Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy and review this book!

This was a cute read with a FMC (Emory) many can relate to, anxious, crisis thinker, and guarded. The MMC (Rylen) is the one you hate to love in the beginning. He appears to be the silver spoon boy handsome and has things handed to him, but he is smart, empathetic, and cares! He sees through the walls Emory has built and pushes her to let them down.

Kate uses amazing imagery in her writing. She does a wonderful job painting the mental images of scenes and people! I did find myself wishing for a bit more information and storyline about the supporting characters. If the bookstore was Margie’s passion and she was close to Emory why was she not an active participant in the change over? Why is Sienna the way she is? I would love to dive deeper into Callie’s storyline.

Overall, this was an easy read with funny banter, a medium burn, and emotional development.

100% worth the read!
