A marker is called in.

Brandon comes home from a trail drive to find his wife on her way to Mexico to help the mission folk that took her in. Putting herself in danger. Crossing perilous terrain, where not only the weather kills, but Comancheros and bandoleros as well. He climbs back into the saddle and heads out after her. Both of them now embarked on separate journeys that involves killers, flooded arroyos and narrow divides where one misstep means a plunge to certain death. And, if that’s not enough to challenge them, at journey’s end they’ll face the most dangerous situation of all.

“This book contains plenty of grit and gunfire, but no graphic violence or explicit scenes.”

Silverhills Rescue (2026) is another Sandra Cox Classic Western filled with action, intrigue, great characters, and excitement. This is the third in a developing series about a young woman (Alex) who does what she must to start a new life, ends up falling in love and marrying a rancher (Brandon) who thought love had passed him by, both of them finding that once-in-a-lifetime soulmate that can't be denied. Each book digs deeper into their relationship, their late-1800's world, and the challenges and satisfactions they faced.

In this one, Alex leaves the safety of her ranch and the warmth of her husband and children to help those in a mission who saved her life long ago and are now at the mercy of an outbreak of smallpox. The disease at this time in history was still highly-contagious and without a cure. The mission has no doctor to treat the ill and the nearby villagers are frightened of the danger the illness opens them up to. When her friends at the mission come to her seeking help, Alex doesn’t think twice about going, nor does her longtime friend, Charlie. Her husband is away so doesn’t have a chance to weigh in, but upon his return, quickly follows to offer help. The journey is filled with danger for both parties, some of it from Nature, much from wild Comancheros who see opportunity. What they don't expect is how determined Alex and her friends are.

Overall, this is a devastatingly satisfying book that leaves me hoping there’ll be more to the series, and quickly. I award it an enthusiastic 5/5

What a fabulous western from a gifted author of the genre! Sandra Cox knows how to spin a tale filled with adventure, danger and intrigue. When Alex is asked by a friend to go Mexico in order to assist those at a mission struck by smallpox, she immediately sets out on the trek, aided by one of her husband's ranch hands. These three face an arduous journey crossing perilous terrian while facing challenges from animals, nature, and even humans.

When Alex's husband, Brandon, returns to their ranch after a cattle drive and learns what his wife has done, he sets out after her. Brandon encounters his own mix of troubles, including a run in with two drifters. Later, when the group unites, they must fend (among other troubles) against Comancheros, led by vindictive man set on retribution.

Cox does a brilliant job of dropping her reader into the heart of every scene with vivid descriptions, spot-on characterizations, and natural, era-perfect dialogue. Even minor characters are treated with care. By the time the story reaches its satisfying conclusion, you'll feel like you've traveled along on the journey, swallowed the dry dust of the west, and plowed through raging rivers.

Not only did I find this an amazing story with superb human characters, but several of the horses stole my heart. If you're a fan of westerns, this is one you don't want to miss!

Fans of western romances will find a lot to like in this book, even though romance takes a backseat to non-stop action. Smallpox is taking lives in a Mexican mission, and Alexandra feels a deep obligation to help the people who once helped her. While her husband, Brandon, is away on a cattle drive, she rides out with a ranch hand on a perilous trip to a place where she may not survive.

The ride alone presents multiple challenges: rattlesnakes, precipitous ridges, storms, flooding rivers, aggressive cowboys, and, most dangerous of all, Comancheros bent on kidnapping Alex. She arrives at the mission only to expose herself to a deadly disease. Brandon catches up after his own ordeal, only to discover the worst.

The romance between Alex and Brandon is sweet and lusty and above all, kind and full of respect. I enjoyed their dynamics even though the danger they face, apart and together, is the focus of the read. The couple shares the POV. Both are strong-willed, fully fleshed-out characters, and with Charlie, the ranch hand, they made a dynamic trio. The loyalty, banter, and camaraderie add to the pleasure of the read.

This book works as a stand-alone without any difficulty at all. Highly recommended to readers of western romances and western adventures.

Silverhills’ Rescue takes us back to the residents of Silverhills family and their love and loyalty. The moment Alex receives the news of the outbreak of smallpox at the mission, she embarks on a dangerous journey to help Manuel, Father Jon, and Sisters Sarah and Marie. She wasn’t inoculated. None of the folks at Silverhills were. It wasn’t that easy to get the vaccine out West, especially on a ranch with no towns nearby. But she didn’t care, and she was too strong-headed to listen to anyone.

Cox’s crisp style of writing and breathtaking pace of the story didn't let me put this book down, and I finished it within two sittings. Once again, the story highlights the loving relationship of Alex and Brandon and their kind-heartedness. Their bonding with their friends and horses is noteworthy.

Cox’s prose is brilliant. Here is one example: “Blue water tinged with a hint of green lapped at the gritty shore where occasional sage brush and sparse, stringy grass clung to the water’s edge.”

It’s 1874, and Manuel comes up from Mexico to ask Alexandria for help. Without hesitation, she goes down to Mexico to assist the beloved Father Jon as he struggles to take care of orphans who have smallpox. A rancher named Charlie goes with her. Soon, her husband chases after them because he knows the mission is too dangerous.

Turns out smallpox isn’t the only danger in this story. There are rattle snakes, loose footing (for horses and people), water to somehow cross, an angry Mexican outlaw and his gang, cougars … there’s some new danger around every corner. I could NOT stop reading once I started this book!

Whenever Alex, Charlie, and Brandon were victorious over a tricky situation, I let out a sigh of relief. Twice that relief was so big that I cried. It’s SUCH a good story.

Cox’s writing immersed me in the desert Southwest. It felt authentic. Her descriptions of the sky during sunrises and sunsets are accurate (I live in TX) and so beautiful.

This is a really, really, really good Western. Highly recommended!

Silverhills’ Rescue is author Sandra Cox at her best. Ms. Cox leads the main character, Alexandria, on a dangerous journey to Mexico, where she hopes to help those quarantined for smallpox. But in 1874, even getting there carries its own risks. When Alex’s husband, Brandon, returns home and learns her intentions, he quickly sets out after her, encountering several perils of his own.

Readers will feel drawn into the story, sharing the powerful emotions and intense action. Ms. Cox has a gift for crafting scenes that are both compelling and profoundly moving.

I highly recommend Silverhills’ Rescue and encourage Western book lovers to treat themselves and read the entire series.

Hang on to your hat!

This author sure knows how to write a grand adventure!
Alex is as brave as she is beautiful and her husband, Brandon, can’t wait to see her again after a long cattle drive. But when he arrives home to Silverhills he finds she’s gone to Mexico on a mission to help the father with a deadly outbreak of smallpox.
Frightened for Alex, Brandon races after her, fighting weather and man to get to his wife.
Though there are a few editing issues it’s easy to overlook them as the story unfolds like an award-winning western movie- so good!

I have loved the Silverhills series and was excited to see a new story. All the familiar characters are back. When someone from the past arrives seeking help, Alexandra is ready to jump in and assist. Brandon is still away tending cattle, but there are many to watch their twins. She sets out with Manuel and a hand, Charlie, to help the people at the mission who helped her. It's a long journey, and it doesn't always go smoothly. I love these characters, and especially Alex. She is strong, kind, stubborn, and willing to put her life on the line for those she cares for. The setting is so beautifully described that it makes me feel like I'm riding along with them. The pace is fast as they go from one situation to another. There was more than once when I thought: Oh no, how will they survive this? Plus, there was a lovesick horse and a desperate puma in the mix. This well-written western was hard to put down, and I can highly recommend it.
