Wow. I don't even know where to start! This book is phenomenal. It had enough suspense, but wasn't gory or crude. There was very little language ( which I really appreciated) and the characters were beautifully written. I did get slightly confused with the POV switching, but it wasn't too bad.
Rose was everything we love in a protagonist: sassy, snarky, funny, and loveable. We got to see her grow into realizing that she doesn't have to hold everything in. That it's okay to need help or be emotional.
Cal was ( for lack of better words) really awesome! I mean, he's a hot detective who only wears black and drives a motorcycle. What else would he be but that?
I was glued to it and enjoyed it so much! The plot, the elevator, Danny! They were all *chef's kiss*
Thank you Elaine Evans for an ARC of this book!

Ahhhh!!! My first ever ARC review!
Thank you, Elaine Evans

The first paragraph had me hooked. I haven’t started a book in a while where I read more than half of it in one sitting. It really was a “one more chapter than I’m going to bed” (clearly not the case for me) kind of book. The chemistry between Cal & Rose is what I enjoyed the most. It’s like you were witnessing it all first hand. The banter between the two had me giggling quite a bit. Niko gave me the ick from the start, because where the heck did he just come from- showing up right as Cal walked away!? Once you get further in the book it all makes sense!

If you’re in the mood to read something you’ll have a hard time putting down, enemies to lovers, + thriller all in one, I definitely recommend this book!

This romantic suspense read is a thrilling ride!! The yearning!! Gosh, the tension is palpable, and you get both sides with dual POV. This couple is feisty and sweet. With the hurt of a past moment lingering over them working together, you almost get a hate to lovers feel. The hurt is clearly explained so it doesn’t feel angsty. Slight miscommunication in there. But I really enjoy the longing and that slow burn of them realizing they loved each other. It’s a sweet romance in a dark situation.
I love how the detective mystery aspect of this story made it impossible to put down. The mystery and suspense were fun and kept me guessing. The twists were surprising. I had suspicions around the mystery, and while some of it was a little predictable, I didn’t guess the whole story early on.
The story is fast paced and a quick read. I really enjoyed this read and would recommend to anyone!

Did I fall in love with writing romantic suspense after this book? Yes, yes I did!
Rose and Cal are two of my most favorite characters I have ever written. I hope you feel the same after reading my first stab at enemies-to-lovers! This book challenged me in the best possible way and I know you'll be on the edge of your seat and swooning at the same time! So buckle up and book your room at the Black Onyx Hotel. If you dare. 😉

Elaine Evans didn’t just step outside her comfort zone with The Storm We Breathe—she sprinted into an entirely new atmosphere and took me, the reader, with her. This book feels like the moment a calm sky suddenly cracks open, and before you know it, you’re in the middle of the narrative, wondering how on earth you got there.
What makes it so electrifying is how confidently Evans plays with misdirection. Every time you think you’ve pinned down a motive, a culprit, or even the emotional center of the story, she yanks the floor out from under you. I kept thinking, “Okay, now I’ve got it.” And every single time? Wrong. Spectacularly wrong. The kind of wrong that makes you laugh at yourself because the twist is so wild yet so perfectly seeded that you can’t believe you missed it.
By the time the truth finally hit, I had that rare, delicious moment of pure shock—the kind that makes you close the book, stare into space, and whisper, “How did I not see that coming?” The answer, of course, is simple: because Evans crafted something genuinely unpredictable. Not chaotic for chaos’s sake, but intricately layered, emotionally sharp, and bold in a way that feels like a reinvention.
And honestly, the fact that I had to message Elaine herself to share my shock feels completely on‑brand for this reading experience. This is the kind of book that demands a reaction. It’s not just read—it’s felt, argued with, gasped at, and then immediately recommended to the next unsuspecting reader.
If this is the direction Elaine Evans is heading, buckle up. The storm she’s conjured here is only the beginning.
On top of all that, the emotional core of the story hits just as hard as the twists. We follow Rose as she’s thrown into the frantic search for her missing mother, a disappearance that pulls her straight back into the orbit of Detective Cal—the man she shadowed a year earlier while researching her book. Their chemistry had been simmering then, right up until Cal shut it down in the name of professionalism. Now, forced together again under far higher stakes, all that unresolved tension crackles right back to life. Watching them navigate their feelings while unraveling the secrets buried inside the Onyx Hotel had me glued to the pages. The danger, the longing, the claustrophobic mystery of that hotel—it all builds into a perfect storm.
If you want a thriller that shocks you, sweeps you up emotionally, and refuses to let you predict a single thing, make sure The Storm We Breathe is on your radar. Grab it the moment it hits shelves on February 24, 2026.

I never thought I would be able to read a book that had thriller and romance combined. The Storm We Breathe is a perfect example of being able to blend two genres together beautifully. The author has captured both the romantic tension and the thriller suspense within the characters, setting, and storytelling. The one thing I really enjoyed about this book was the soul buildup between our main protagonist Rose and Cal’s relationship. The yearning they both had for each other, but also wanting to stay focused when trying to find Rose's mother. Both emotions of romance and the uncertainty of knowing if Rose's mother is OK weighs heavy on them throughout the whole book, even during the romantic settings.

Rose, our main protagonist was one of my favorite characters. I always enjoy reading about a strong female lead and she was one that really voiced her opinions, wasn't afraid to take charge, but still had a soft feminine side. Her determination is what really drives the story of one daughter’s ambition to solve/find her mother.

Cal was a perfect male lead. He was strong, fierce and determined in solving the case, but also showed his more sensitive side, which a lot of male leads lack. The author made Cal very relatable when it comes to forming romantic bonds with people. I loved how he had a soft side to him and how he showed his emanations when interacting with our main female lead.

The overall setting of The Black Onyx Hotel was an amazing choice. The hotel ambience added a mysterious/creepy feeling, but also giving a luxurious side. We saw many points within the hotel where it could have this almost murderous unsettling feeling, and then in the ballroom how glorious and lavish it was, and almost feeling out of place

The only negative review I have on the book is at points when Rose and Cal are searching the hotel trying to find clues. It feels like we are in a stalemate. There wasn't many clues throughout the hotel to give any instance of where Rose's mother was, and it felt like the characters were all running in circles trying to find clues.

In overall, I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from Elaine Evans. I definitely enjoyed the combination of a romantic thriller and definitely will be looking into reading more within that genre. With thanks to Elaine Evans, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC.

My Thoughts:
The Storm We Breathe by Elaine Evans is a tensed, sensual romantic thriller between two people with a history. This book follows Rose Sheridan after her mother goes missing one evening after a party. Police detective Cal begrudgingly teams up with her to help him find her mother. They share a romantic chemistry he tries to fight through because her mom is his top priority. What follows is a tale of betrayal, devastation, and back stabbing. And in the mix of all of this, emotions and longing stir for one another. This story kept me flipping pages to find out what was happening next. It was an easy book to read and understand overall. The relationship between Rose and Cal was so fun! I love the banter between the two characters and the complexity of their roles in the book. This book is great for someone who enjoys:

•A fast paced easy read
•Enemies to lovers
•A good plot twist
•Enjoyable banter
•Tasteful closed door romance scenes

Hi! Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read The Storm We Breathe as an Advanced Reader's Copy and Rose and Cal's story—I've enjoyed it a lot. And without further ado, let's start with the review.
--
I liked the approach to the main narrative, very descriptive of what the MCs are watching and hearing. Also, a very nice touch are the small sentences that break the fourth wall (small jokes between the reader and character), which make us, the readers, feel like we're next or living the story with the FMC.

Although I expected a much more serious narrative from the MMC, it actually makes sense that his narrative doesn't translate the same as Rose's perspective, which I think makes it much more realistic to the difference between both POVs. It’s smart to add in Cal's POV, being made up of small physical details. I mean, it makes sense; he's a detective and much more observant than Rose.

I also like how the name of the book comes up naturally, without being forced. It added a charming touch to how our MCs worked together.
--
I loved the prologue. Since it's a mystery story, sometimes I get bored with the traditional opening, when the person is already missing, but it felt chaotic, again like we're feeling the adrenaline of the character. It felt very Criminal Minds when you started with our missing person or victim.

Now, do you remember Castle, the TV series? I got that vibe at first from the relationship between Cal and Rose, but reverse. I liked the author x police/detective dynamic, so the new take was very interesting.
--
Although the way the storyline is written does show mystery, I would like it if it were to have a tad more mystery to balance out the romance (the style of narrative between MCs or even the direction of their dynamic), since it seems too unrealistic to be very focused on your love life while your mom is missing.

It would help to add details, like the process of Cal analyzing the small clues or the information, even the processing of the investigation would actually give a bit more depth to the main plot of mystery and technical process of it.
--
Our mysterious villain gave me the vibe of the series The Naturals and Criminal Minds, very creepy but in a psychological way. Also, I liked how each chapter is an hour or so; we, the readers, get a chronological order of what happens on the story.
--
So, amazingly well written, and congrats to the author, and I know this is going to be controversial, but the style of writing and narrative from our MCs towards the reader would make an amazing movie (I mean, if they actually followed the book and the profile of the characters). That’s all I'll say (to avoid spoilers), and I'll see you on the next review.

Well, where do I start with this book it was just that amazing. This romantic suspense was everything I didn't know I needed to read. Rose the FMC was so sweet, sassy, and just a lovable character all the way around. Then there's the MMC cow who was the sexy detective with me he kind of felt like he had that little bit of bad boy demeanor but it could just be me and I'm reading into it too much. The Sparks between Cal and Rose was wow it was just a really nice thing. The funny banter and the little moments here and there are almost just amazing. I did like the slow build up between the romance between the two it kind of felt natural which is what I liked it wasn't rushed or forced or anything like that which is what made it amazing. I was hooked from the very beginning and I could not put it down. As soon as Rose's mom went missing and things started happening and the suspense started building it was just a no-brainer there was no putting it down. I will say this though won't you think you have something figured out nope the author throws you a curveball and you're like how did that even happen or it did with me because my brain works different than most. Overall this book was written very well, the characters were amazing, the scenes and the suspense was built up perfect. Everything was just perfect. A little side note though Nico was creepy gave me the creeps he just gave me those weird creepy I don't know how to explain it but I didn't like that character. Other than that everybody else was wonderful and this is something that everybody needs in their life and just dont know it.

The Storm We Breathe is a gripping, atmospheric romantic thriller that pulls you in from the very first page. Elaine Evans blends emotional vulnerability with taut suspense, creating a story that feels both intimate and pulse‑pounding as Rose Sheridan’s world collapses and reshapes itself in the span of a few days.

Rose is a wonderfully layered protagonist—hurting, determined, and far braver than she realises. Her mother’s sudden disappearance forces her to confront not only her deepest fears but also the one man she’s tried (and failed) to forget: Detective Cal Masters. Their history simmers beneath every interaction, and Evans captures that unresolved tension beautifully. It’s the kind of chemistry that feels lived‑in, complicated, and impossible to ignore.

The Black Onyx Hotel is a fantastic setting—moody, isolated, and full of secrets. Once the storm rolls in and traps Rose and Cal inside, the novel shifts into a claustrophobic, high‑stakes mystery where every shadow feels suspicious. The atmosphere is thick with unease, and the emotional stakes rise in tandem with the danger.

What really stands out is the balance between heart and suspense. The mystery of Rose’s mother is genuinely compelling, but it’s the rekindling connection between Rose and Cal—tender, tense, and full of unfinished business—that gives the story its emotional punch. Evans lets their relationship unfold naturally, even as the truth they’re chasing grows darker and more threatening.

A captivating blend of danger, longing, and storm‑soaked atmosphere, The Storm We Breathe is perfect for readers who love romantic suspense with real emotional depth. It’s the kind of book you inhale in one sitting.

ARC Review: The Storm We Breathe by Elaine Evan’s
Thank you to Elaine Evan’s for the Advanced Reader Copy!

Can I just say… the 2026 books are already setting the bar HIGH.

Cal and Rose — what a story! ❤️

Rose is an author who decides to shadow a police officer for research for her next book. Enter Cal. What starts as professional observation quickly turns into something much deeper. Cal falls for Rose but keeps his feelings buried under professionalism. Meanwhile, Rose is completely captivated by him — showing it in subtle ways — yet keeping her heart guarded.

When Cal maintains his “professional distance,” Rose feels the sting of rejection and eventually moves on but it doesn’t last.

Then everything changes.

Rose receives a devastating call: her mother is missing. And when it comes time to investigate, there is only one person she trusts — Cal.

As they’re thrown back together, emotions resurface, tensions rise, and the mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance takes shocking turns. The reveal? I did not see it coming.

And just when you think the emotional stakes couldn’t get higher — two men are in love with Rose. But only one will ultimately win her heart. The question is… who? Cal? Niko? And how far will someone go to protect the woman they love?

Some of my favorite quotes:

“Sometimes you need to experience the storms in life and breathe them in, in order to make it out alive.”

“The world falls away, leaving only the thunder of our hearts and the storms we’ve chosen to survive together.”

This story has romance, tension, heartbreak, mystery, and twists that keep you turning pages. I read it in one sitting — I simply could not put it down.

Loved. Loved. Loved.

In The Storm We Breathe by Elaine Evans, we are introduced to Rose Sheridan, an indie author who hasn’t seen her mother in 3 days.

Brought to the police station to identify belongings, Rose teams up with Detective Cal, a very, very, very handsome man who rejected her when she shadowed him last year.

Back then, she shadowed him for her book, but now? She needs him to help her find her mom - even if he can’t stand the sight of her.

Within hours, Cal and Rose find themselves on the wrong side of the case.
Closer to her mother, but also closer to becoming victims themselves.

Time is ticking.
Will they find her mom?
Or find themselves dead in the bowels of the Black Onyx?

Here's my 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ review of The Storm We Breathe by @elaineevanswrites

Genre: Romantic Suspense | Pages: 204

This Book in 5 Emojis: 🚨🕵🏾👱🏻‍♀️🏨🔫

My Thoughts On This Clean Romance Wrapped In A Riveting Detective Case:

I'm not going to lie, I requested this book because of the romance aspect. But I read it all in two days because of the case!

And don't worry, this is a 🚫🌶️ and 🚫gore read!

Rose is a bit annoying, but she definitely kept the plot twisting with her presumptive attitude!

Cal... Is exactly as Rose describes him. Too cool for his own good. Mr. Suave is a man of few words... Except when it comes to winning Rose back 🤣 then his puppy dog tail just wags all over the place and he can't stop talking.

The case? More exciting than you think! Rose's mom went missing from a speaking event at a super expensive hotel - but when they go to examine the evidence? The room has been swept clean and the security footage has been tampered with.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE????

I would HIGHLY recommend this read!

Thanks for the ARC, Elaine!!

My Rating: 4.5⭐️

✨ Thank you to Elaine Evans for providing an ARC of The Storm We Breathe. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ✨

The Storm We Breathe is a romantic suspense that pulled me in from the very first chapter and refused to let go. It has all the elements I love in a suspense/thriller read—secrets, tension, and twists—with the added bonus of a romance that truly works and feels woven seamlessly into the story rather than tacked on.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Cal and Rose is written in such a masterful, intentional way. Their connection builds with layered emotion, sharp tension, and just the right amount of vulnerability. These are characters that feel real, flawed, and deeply human, and I found myself fully invested in both their individual journeys and their shared story.

The plot itself kept me on my toes the entire time. Just when I thought I had things figured out, another twist would appear, pulling me deeper into the story. It’s one of those books where “just one more chapter” turns into hours, because I truly could not put it down.

Elaine Evans delivers a gripping, emotionally charged read that balances suspense and romance beautifully. If you enjoy mysteries and thrillers with a strong emotional pull, this book may be for you.

ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op. All opinions are my own.

The Storm We Breathe grabbed me from the start and did not let go. It is fast-paced, tense, and bingeable, with suspense that feels high stakes without tipping into gore or shock value. I kept thinking one more chapter, and then suddenly I was deep into the night.

Rose is a standout FMC. She is sassy, snarky, and genuinely likeable, but she also has emotional depth that grows as the story unfolds. I really loved watching her shift from carrying everything alone to realising that needing help does not make her weaker. It made her feel real.

Cal is broody detective perfection. Calm, observant, protective, and clearly fighting the chemistry he has with Rose, even when the situation is at its worst. Their dynamic is full of banter and unresolved history, and the romance builds in a way that feels natural rather than rushed. This is a closed door, but the tension and yearning absolutely deliver.

The story uses multiple points of view, which keeps the pacing sharp and adds context, though I did have one or two moments where I needed to reorient myself during a switch. Overall, the suspense and the setting kept me glued to the pages.

If you want romantic suspense with a missing person mystery, forced proximity, second chance tension, and closed-door romance with real chemistry, I would recommend this.

GOSH I LOVE ROMANTIC SUSPENSE BOOKS. Especially when the MMC is the lead detective on the case!!! THE ACTUAL BEST TROPE AND NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.

I absolutely loved Cal and Rose. The banter? The tension? THE YEARNING?! yes please!!!!!!! And then you add the thrill of the suspense and BAM you got yourselves a book people!!!!

I couldn’t get enough of this book. I finished it in three hours. I was addicted and could. Not. Stop. At first i expected the plot twist BUT THEN there was more and my JAW HIT THE FLOOR!

Not only was the suspense top notch, but the romance was *chefs kiss*. Cal was down bad for Rose and tried to keep it professional (🤪) but deep down he always knew she was the one for him. I loved their connection and the raw emotions they elicited it from one another.

“Because I like being in your orbit, Sheridan.”

“You bring me to my knees, Rose Sheridan. And I hope I never stand again.” Then he pauses. “The storm we breathe.”

“Sometimes you need to experience the storms of life, and breathe them in, in order to make it out alive.”

“You’re my storm, Rose,” he whispers. “Things are rough now, but we’ll stand together. We’ll find our calm inside the chaos.”

“You and me, Rose … I’m not going anywhere. I’m done running away. Hell, I think I’ve been running toward you all along.”

Ugh. All the feels. It was the perfect swoon-worthy book without the spice.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FRIENDS!

I loved this, loved it.

This is the second chance romance of the ages. I told myself I was just going to read a little to get a feel for the book and decide if I wanted to read it next, and then next thing I knew it completely took over my mind. I kept sneaking in chapters until I had to finish it.

When Rose’s mother goes missing, the newest detective on the case is none other than Callum, the man she fell for in the past and the man who rejected her. Now she has to let him back in so he can help her find her mom before it’s too late. But the closer they get to uncovering the truth, the more their past and those old feelings come RUSHING back. And who took Rose’s mom and why is something no one will see coming!

The romance was the highlight for me. I had my suspicions about one character who was part of the mystery, and while I was right, I definitely didn’t have it all figured out. The chemistry between Cal and Rose was off the charts! The mystery of who took Rose’s mom and why had me stumped. I loved it.

I gave this 4.5 stars, rounded up to a 5.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this novel.

This is a romantic suspense that keeps you hooked until the very end. It’s a quick, easy read. Perfect for a chill day when you want to knock out your reading goal without thinking too hard.

The story follows Rose, a sassy and snarky journalist who’s searching for her recently disappeared mother. One of my favorite parts of this book was watching Rose’s emotional growth. I love stories where strong, independent women learn how to be vulnerable and let themselves feel, and that journey was really well done here. The romance itself is sweet, especially considering how dark and unsettling the situation is.

Her relationship with Cal was cute, and I loved how protective he was of her (even if a few of his lines were a little cringey for my personal taste). The plot twist was somewhat predictable, but I still enjoyed how everything played out. I definitely had a few “I knew it!” moments.

If you love:
• Enemies to lovers
• Forced proximity
• Second-chance romance
• Missing person mysteries
• Man-in-uniform MMC
• Dual POV
• Suspense & mystery
• Emotional growth
• Yearning tension
• Betrayal
• Stalker vibes

this one’s for you.

If you enjoyed Woman Down by Colleen Hoover or Beautiful Exile by Catherine Cowles, I think you’ll really like this one too.

This book reads as if you were watching an episode of CSI or Law & Order SVU. If you know me, you know one of my favorite shows is SVU. From the start of this book, I was hooked. The characters are older and that made me so happy. The suspense of the story really good, especially if you want to dip your toes into the subgenre and aren’t too sure you will like it. There is nothing crazy or impractical, but it keeps you wanting more and wanting answers. I did guess the twist, but I was still happy it happened. You get POVs of so many characters, so you know exactly what they are thinking and how they are feeling at the time. In books like this one, I feel more engaged when the author does that. The chemistry between Cal and Rose is felt anytime they are together. The story is told in such a short amount of time that we don’t really get to see an in-depth relationship, but we do see enough to feel their love for one another. Elaine is a clean romance author, but let me tell you that elevator scene was HOT! Elaine is one of my favorite authors, I really hope she writes another romantic suspense novel in the near future.

This was my first book by this author. The first chapter definitely drew you into the book, providing just enough information to make you keep reading.

The main characters, Rose Sheridan and Det Cal, are the main romantic storyline as they try to find Rose's mother who has been kidnapped. They have chemistry from an earlier meeting a year prior when Rose was shadowing Det Cal for a book she was writing. There were definitely sparks at that time but assumptions and misunderstandings on both of their parts ended the possible relationship on a bad note. A quick comment, she was 32 years old, assume he was about same age, and at times both seemed rather naive. This first 30 percent of the novel was kept going back and forth on the thoughts of both characters and it seemed to take them forever to finally talk about what happened and move on.

The mystery part of the book was very well done, and I enjoyed the way the author gave you an epilogue so you know what became of the characters.

POSSIBLE SPOILER
I did have one question regarding why it took 20 years for the kidnapper to take action based on an event that many years ago.

I would recommend this to someone who likes a quick, light romantic suspense book.

“You bring me to my knees. And I hope I never stand again.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow this book was a ride. Cinematic writing transported me into several different environments and I felt like I was standing there with the characters and feeling all the emotions with them. The dry humor was funny without disturbing the suspense. The pacing is quick and the plot twist was good. I liked all the characters. The tension and yearning were so good! I am already a fan of this author and how she writes is really captivating from the first word.

Release date 2/24/26.
Thanks to the author for the ARC.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Storm We Breathe by Elaine Evans

I rated The Storm We Breathe 4/5 stars, and from the very start, the action had me hooked. Thes tory has a strong opening, and the multiple POVs kept the pacing fast. I flew through this book, constantly eager to see what would happen next.

Rose is a strong and compelling leading lady, especially while navigating the fear and uncertainty of her mother being missing. She felt resilient and determined in a way that made it easy to root for her. And Cal? Hot. 🔥 Their chemistry was undeniable, even as their relationship was built on misunderstandings, boundaries, and emotional tension. I loved watching them work through it all and absolutely rooted for their second chance at love.

This book is a great pick for readers who love crime stories but also want a satisfying romance woven in. It’s fast-paced, engaging, and emotionally rewarding.

Thank you to Elaine Evans for the advanced copy of this story. The Storm We Breathe is available everywhere on February 24, 2026, and is definitely one to add to your list!

Review of Advanced Copy

I really enjoyed reading this book! I don’t always love the aspect of multiple POVs, but multiple characters are what helped this story stand out! I absolutely loved how the story started out with her moms POV. It really set the mood for a family oriented plot and how family ties played a big part in the story. Even though there were a few time skips and different character POVs, it all flowed super well. This story kept me flipping pages to find out what was happening next. It was an easy book to read and understand overall. The relationship between Rose and Cal was so fun! I love the banter between the two characters and the complexity of their roles in the book. Every relationship in this book isn't black and white and has lots of depth throughout it. My favorite side character is Denny, since any time he was around he made me laugh. Overall this is such a great read, the storm ties everything in the plot together with a bow. I highly recommend this book!

The Storm We Breathe by Elaine Evans is a tensed, sensual romantic thriller between two people with a history. Received an ARC, and here goes my review.

It’s about Rose Sheridan, an author who worked with Detective Cal Masters to write her book. Her mother’s mysterious disappearance pulled them together again into an uneasy investigation.

Even though the story is built around someone disappearing, it has more romantic tension than the suspenseful type. The writing is fast-paced and engaging, with short chapters and multiple POVs (mainly Rose’s and Cal’s).

The mystery also is predictable often. So, you can say, it’s romance with a mystery/thriller sub-plot. It’s a page-turner, nevertheless. The heat between the couple and their cute banter kept the story moving. It’s also a bit erotic at times, but nothing’s explicit.

Perfect for those who enjoy their romance full of flirt and a light touch of spice. There’s also a slight M-F-M tension within the pages.

PS... The ending could’ve been clipped by 4-5 pages.

Overall, I really liked this book. In some ways, Rose was relatable. She is a people pleaser that fell into a relationship with the wrong guy after being rejected by the guy she really liked. Cal is the detective investigating her mother's disappearance, and the man that rejected her a year earlier when she was shadowing him to do research for the book she's writing. Rose demands to be involved in the investigation into her mother's disappearance since the NDA she signed the previous year is still valid. This was a part that wasn't believable because of the personal relationship would give lawyers in any court case reason to get evidence thrown out. But ignoring that aspect, I continued as Cal and Rose looked for evidence leading to where her mother was. The romance was sweet, but the time frame it occured wasn't believable, but it's fiction, so acceptable. Some aspects of Diane's (Rose's mother) disappearance were predictable, but not all of the reasoning. I would recommend this if you're looking for an easy read that isn't too long. It's also a clean read, with only kissing in it.

When Rose’s mom goes missing, she repeatedly follows up with the police station she shadowed, as a mystery author, a year ago, and she poses that she can help them. When the department agrees, she ends up paired with Cal, the agent she was previously assigned to. The two had an attraction that morphed throughout their time together. Can they work together to find out what happened to Rose’s mom? Rose grew up alongside her cousin, after the loss of her aunt and uncle, and she has to let her know that her mom is missing and left a note. Cal and Rose end up at the hotel her mom had a conference at, and now her ex is currently attending one there too. Despite Rose and Cal being adults, I felt like they didn’t act their age; they seemed immature and would’ve helped a lot by just communicating in the past and present. The story was short, fast, predictable, and a lighter read: it took place during one day and night, but there were flashbacks to show what led to the days events.

Secrets, Storms, & Pure Obsession

OMG besties… "The Storm We Breathe" had me STRESSED in the best way. Rose is already reeling from a breakup when her mom, Diane, disappears without a trace. Enter Cal... detective, professional brooder, and the man who rejected her a year ago. The tension? IMMACULATE. He falls first energy with enemies-to-lovers friction? Yes, please.

They’re chasing leads at the Black Onyx Hotel while a brutal storm traps them inside, and the suspense just keeps tightening. Between the danger, the secrets, and Rose’s desperate need for answers, I was flipping pages like my life depended on it. And Cal? Calm, controlled, and quietly obsessed.

It’s closed-door spice, but don’t get it twisted... the emotional intensity is LOUD. The slow burn, the longing, the angst? Pure indulgence. 😏

If you love romantic suspense with danger galore and heart-clutching tension, add this to your TBR! 😉

My Ratings:  ⭐ 4/5  ▪︎  🥵 1/5

First Elaine Evans book for me, and wow — definitely not the last. This romantic suspense had me hooked from the first page.
Tropes: Detective MMC 🕵️‍♂️, forced proximity, second chance romance, enemies-to-lovers, hurt-to-healing, protective MMC, stalking, suspense & mystery, dual POV, anxiety rep.
The tension between Rose and Cal? Chef’s kiss. That slow-burn yearning, the banter, the little caretaking moments — it all felt so natural. The mystery kept me guessing the whole way, and the twists? I did not see all of them coming 😳
Rose is sassy, smart, and completely lovable. Cal is the perfect mix of broody detective and subtle bad-boy energy — so swoon-worthy. Side characters added flavor, and the suspense around her mom’s disappearance? Intense. Nico? Creepy as heck, loved to hate him.
Overall: fast-paced, emotional, and addictive. If you love romantic suspense with heart, chemistry, and edge-of-your-seat mystery — this one is for you. 🖤
