Teri Montague knows how to start her stories and once again snagged my interest and attention with the opening pages of The Orphan Sword. Two FMC's with intriguing pasts and presents leading them to adventures together sounded like a great read, especially when the bodyguard trope was used.

The story was a mix of low to moderate stakes. I liked the tavern scenes, as it was a community hub and significant characters showed off their good and bad sides there. Events at the tougher end of the spectrum let Ms Montague play out long games, show callous decision making by politicians, hype me up with fight scenes and then sensitively explore lingering effects of all those things on individuals. It all got fairly involved but the author did a good job of keeping her threads under control.

Through all the intrigue, action scenes and political manoeuvring the message about being your true self and not following society's expectations came through clearly - " 'You are who you are,' Kora said. 'You don't need to change for anyone.' ". That's an important one and I really appreciated the way it was highlighted

The author grew relationships well, picking up nascent attractions and nurturing them into something solid. I liked seeing bonds form as couples grew to trust each other with their truths. Some of the characters were a bit erratic with opinions and their rush to express them, while others were sometimes hasty in their decision making, and that got frustrating at times.

The hook at the end was brilliant and left me eager for more.
