When twenty-one year old Odessa Alora begins her day like any other, she has no idea that terrifying creatures are about to arrive- creatures that will turn her world upside down. Torn from everything she has ever known, Odessa is thrust into a new life and forced to accept the magical bond bestowed upon her at birth.
As she uncovers the truth behind the bond- and the magnetic pull she's always felt towards the Western Sea- Odessa must face her grief and the painful memories of those she's lost. With the help of Aiden Stoll, a dragon rider whose loyalty runs deeper than she expects, Odessa begins to piece together who she truly is.
But life at court is not what it seems. As secrets unravel and enemies close in, Odessa learns that finding the answers she's been searching for will come at a devastating cost.
4.5/5 really good debut. I was a fan of the characters (most of them at least), and liked that we got multiple POVs. The story itself was engaging and made me want to keep reading.
The magic system, or what we know of it so far, is explained well. That makes a huge difference in a romantasy book 👌🏼
I’m always here for books involving dragons. 🐉
The ending gave us a little preview of book two, but left enough unsaid that you definitely want to read the next one to see what happens.
Book Review: The Kingdom of Mist and Shadow: The Fortis Amorten Series by K.C. Torgerson

The Kingdom of Mist and Shadow completely swept me away. This is the kind of fantasy that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place. Dragon riders? Yes. Ancient magic and powerful witches? Absolutely. Monsters lurking in the shadows? You bet. Corrupt kingdoms rotting from the inside out? Ohhh yes. But what truly makes this story unforgettable isn’t just the world-building (which is incredible) — it’s the heart. The sibling relationships and family bonds hit deep. The loyalty, the sacrifices, the tension, the love — it all feels raw and real. And when hidden heritage begins to unravel and long-buried truths rise to the surface? I was hooked. The reveals are layered, emotional, and so satisfying. The romance adds just the right amount of intensity without overpowering the main plot. It simmers beautifully alongside the larger political and magical conflicts. Nothing feels rushed. Everything feels earned. The writing pulls you straight into a mist-covered kingdom filled with danger, mystery, and power struggles. Every chapter builds momentum, and by the end, I was completely invested in these characters and their fate. If you love dragon riders, magic-wielding heroines, morally complicated kingdoms, monsters, found family, and secrets that change everything — this book delivers. An epic, emotional, magical ride from beginning to end. I’m still thinking about it.
I CANNOT WAIT for the next book! I very much enjoyed the story and it was a roller coaster through and through. I love the many points of view along with each character having their own love story. It’s different from what I normally read but I still will catch parts that remind me of other books I really enjoyed. In no way did this feel like it was trying to be a copy of any books in this genre but they had the elements that make a good fantasy (mainly dragons lol). I truly recommend this book to anyone looking for a deep read with a fast paced plot and characters you will hate and fall in love with.
This is not technically spoilers but if you want to be completely blind when going into the book then don’t read!
I love who turn(s) out to be the bad guy(s) in the story! It has a nice ending that wraps up the story so you don’t feel devastated the next book isn’t out but it will leave you wanting more. Also. One of the characters I did NOT like the first 2/3 of the book but then . . . OMG! I fell in love and just felt all the pain he has been through ❤️
This book was absolutely amazing. The character development was incredibly well done, making each character feel real, layered, and emotionally compelling. As the story unfolded, I felt deeply connected to their journeys, flaws, and growth. The author’s writing is so vivid and immersive that I could picture every scene in full detail, as if I were watching it play out rather than reading words on a page. The descriptions brought the world to life and kept me fully engaged from beginning to end. This is a book that stays with you long after you finish it, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves strong storytelling and unforgettable characters. Kyndra, I am so proud of you! I can’t wait for the second one. The countdown is on. 🫶🏻🥰
In a world filled with new fantasy books that come out every day, K.C Torgerson came out SWINGING with this first installment of 'The Fortis Amorten Series'. Torgerson combines the ever-loved world of dragons with the intrigue of witch covens into a series that is hard to put down (and easy to binge). You get a little of everything: friends to lovers, forced proximity, he falls first, enemies to lovers, unbreakable bonds, and the undying love of siblings.
It's easy to become obsessed with the main characters, but many of my favorite chapters come from the POV's of Odessa and Aiden's friends/family.
You will feel joy. You will feel sadness. You will feel betrayal. You will feel hope. You will feel it all!
I can't wait for book two (because of course there is a cliff hanger)!
It is so Amazing!!! I am happy to be included as an Arc Reader for this author. I fell in love instantly with the characters!!! The world building is phenomenal and my goodness I live for the multiple POVs of the characters. It's an awesome way to get to know each one of them and their stories. I can't wait to reread it again!!!
