Portia MacIntosh is the bestselling author of over 30 romantic comedy novels.
From disastrous dates to destination weddings, Portia’s romcoms are the perfect way to escape from day to day life, visiting sunny beaches in the summer and snowy villages at Christmas time. Whether it’s southern Italy or the Yorkshire coast, Portia’s stories are the holiday you’re craving, conveniently packed in between the pages.
Formerly a journalist, Portia has left the city, swapping the music biz for the moors, to live the (not so) quiet life with her husband and her dog in Yorkshire.
A romantic comedy that is heavy on the comedy with a romantic ARC. As someone who appreciates keeping the bedroom door closed, so to speak, I did not miss the “spicier” scenes others really enjoy. To each their own, I just find them cringey.
This book is inspired by the publishing industry and has great characters and several strong plot arcs. Amber Page is an author who had a successful book series, with a case of writer’s block as she tries to recreate success with a new novel. Amber wants to add more murder mystery, her publisher just wants more sex scenes. They send her on a writer’s retreat in France, which is a lovely setting full of descriptive details. There she meets Henri, the French hotel manager who will someday take over the resort. A love triangle of sorts, influencer and “bachelor” type reality star Caleb also
This is really a romcom about rom coms- it has every trope; fake dating, one bed, friends-to-lovers, miscommunication and a meet cute. I loved that the side plots were so fleshed out- her parents “pre-divorce”, the other female Romance writers she meets there, Henri and Caleb’s back stories. The finale was a bit of a let down; the very end just kind of fizzled for me. But 80% of the book I loved— this book really is funny. It’s. British, though, so it is “Brit humor.”
If you are in the mood for something light, this may be a great read for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood books for the ARC. Book to be released September 15, 2024.
Note to self, don’t try any more books by this author. Its not funny to see a 30 year old woman bounce between being an airhead, a snarky cow, a spineless doormat, and a mature and funny adult. I have whiplash.
4⭐️ Light, funny, festive, cozy, smile-inducing romance. Takes place before Christmas and it’s spice free! 😆 (Okay, maybe some closed door action but very little.) I will read more from this author. Had a good time and I would LOVE to stay at a chateau in France! ❤️
This chick is so dumb and annoying. I may DNF. At 26%, nothing has happened and she’s getting on my nerves. The book is written in first person, so we’re basically stuck inside her head with her and all her boring, stupid, whiny thoughts and her totally dumb decisions. Blah.
... I'm starting to feel like this author had only written 50k words, needed 75k, and instead of writing sex scenes to fill in the rest, she just wrote a ton of ruminating, whining (seriously, this chick probably spent at least 15% of the book just whining about how hard it is to travel. Boo hoo hoo!), and endless descriptions. The snow, the food, the chateau, the other authors... how it feels cold to go outside when it's cold out but warm to come inside when it's cold out! Stahp!
Oh, and the birdbrain forgot her toothbrush because she apparently doesn't own a travel toothbrush. So then she asks the other authors if anyone brought an extra toothbrush with them on vacation that they can give her, because we all totally bring all of our extra unneeded toothbrushes with us on vacation. I just want to shake her. A toothbrush is, what, $2? Get your shit together!
… I ended up finishing this after all. It got somewhat better once she got to the resort. Good enough to keep me moderately entertained while waiting in line to vote anyway.
As always, thanks to Boldwood Books for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC!
This is hands down THE BEST Rom Com I've ever read! The banter, flirting and wit was perfection. The chemistry between the characters left me swooning! This was a great fun and light read. I've never read a Portia MacIntosh book before, but I will for sure be putting many more on my TBR!
There were parts of this book that seem like this was written in response to people mocking PM in real life for writing "silly little romcoms." It's okay to find escape in a light romance vs. getting lost in a book, and that's exactly why I love Portia's books 😍
Portia Macintosh has done it again with another brilliant read. Although I think this may be her best book yet as I loved it from the first page. Amber was a brilliant character and really relatable and I loved her journey both personally and romantically. The setting was excellent and I loved her time at the Chateau. I read this book in a day as I was so invested in the story and just enjoyed the story so much. An amazing 5 star read and I’m hoping for a sequel to see what happens next for Amber and for to hear more about her family who I just loved. Thanks to NetGalley, Portia Macintosh and Boldwood Books for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This was so cute and funny and entertaining without even trying to be. I love the narrator, i love portia’s work, and I love the simple motif of story she constructs that still feels full and developed!
When Amber struggles to write her latest book, her editor suggests adding in some spicy scenes! Feeling unable to do this, Amber sets off to a writers retreat in France, which she really doesn’t want to go on! We follow her trip as she spends time with other ‘friends’ who are authors too but also meets some new people along the way.
This is well written and very humorous, but also shows the importance of really getting to know someone and not assuming you know them just because of what they do or how they initially come across.
You may have your suspicions of the outcome, but I thought the ending was really good, so well written to get to the conclusion of who may become Ambers love interest and help with her difficulties writing.
Aaaah… it’s been so long since I have read a Portia MacIntosh book and I was really looking forward to it. Alas, I hadn’t realised that this is set in the weeks leading up to Christmas – eek! Thankfully, it’s not too festive and I think one to get you warmed up to the festive season.
I enjoyed this story because of the entertaining quips coming from the protagonist. Amber is a writer of rom coms, although admittedly feels tired in this genre and wants to break out into a murder mystery. Unfortunately, her publisher is not having any of it and simply encourages Amber to add more “spice” to her latest manuscript. Suffering from “spicy block”, she finds herself at a writer’s retreat in the French Alps, hoping to regroup and deliver before Christmas.
This book had plenty of enjoyable elements. There is the expected romance thread but this takes shape in a different form. The writers living with Amber at the retreat have decided to challenge themselves to see if the hunky owner will entertain a holiday romance. Employing typical romance tropes, they are blown away when Amber, without trying, appears to snare Henri. I thought this part of the story was really entertaining because Amber is simply trying to find inspiration for her novel, not start dating. Furthermore, her fellow writers are really a bit too old for Henri, so I was curious to know whether any cougars would be successful.
Not only that, Amber finds herself mixed up with reality television star, Caleb. This was an unusual aspect to the plot but I really warmed to their growing friendship. A love triangle develops and I couldn’t foresee how it would settle, especially as Amber doesn’t appear that interested in finding a boyfriend. On the other hand, the whole promotions on social media/influencer role meant that Amber experiences something completely new on her mini holiday – even if she is trying to be writing.
A cute and fun story, this is typical MacIntosh all the way. The setting was romantic and cosy; the characters were entertaining; the protagonist had plenty of comedic moments. This was another good read from MacIntosh and I didn’t regret in the slightest that it had a slightly festive feel.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have been enjoying catching up on Portia MacIntosh's books, but this is her newest published in August. I really enjoyed this romance. Amber Page is a romance author, but wants to write romantic mysteries. Her publisher tells her she needs to finish the book they agreed on, but to up the spice. Amber has no idea how to write spice without making it sound icky. When an opening comes up in the publisher's writing retreat, Amber is slotted in to attend. She is off to an exclusive château in the beautiful French Alps with some other romance writers who are well known and have never given Amber the time of day. The other women convince her to see which of them can snag the handsome manager of the resort. Amber already has a friendship with him, but she also meets up with an influencer who has been contracted by her publisher to write a mystery novel. Amber wants nothing to do with a celebrity that thinks he can write a book, but as they get to know one another, they try writing together and one thing leads to another. Can Amber finish her book? Will she finally let down her guard and find romance?
First I want to say that I am not a fan of love triangles, but this works. I don't think Amber sees either of the men as a potential partner, which certainly helped me to accept it. There is humor, frustration, friendship, mean girls and more. Amber has a lot on her plate. Her parents are splitting up and she is getting calls from them as well as her brother. She is trying to figure out what to do about her book, worried that the other authors won't work with her, and then being invited to spend time with both men. I thought the many tropes in this one were a hoot. We have fake relationships, one bed, friends to lovers, and even the dreaded miscommunication. I really liked getting to know Caleb and his backstory, it made him the guy that I was rooting for. So, who does Amber fall for? Does she finish her book? Does Caleb finish his book? You will have to read this fun story to see what happens and how it all plays out.
What a fun and lovely read!!! I am so happy to have picked this book up! I loved everything about this book! The setting (the French alps and a castle and a very cool and luxurious ski resort), the fun characters and the storyline. I also loved the fact that it was quite a funny book, I caught myself laughing out loud several times during my read and I absolutely loved that!! And last but not least, there is a lovely slow building romance in this book! I am giving a 4 stars out of 5 for that read! I really recommend you this book! It’s a perfect and cozy winter read!
Review I say it with every book of Portia's that I'm fortunate to read but her books are amazing. Her writing is brilliant and with so many laugh out loud scenes her books are easy to fly through.
The setting of this book is a resort in the French Alps and is just idyllic, such a picturesque setting and the most romantic of backdrops for this story.
As always I'm excited to read Portia's next read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The writing was light, funny and engaging. I found myself laughing out loud a few times and smiling throughout the rest of the book. There were some deeper moments and some times when I really felt for the main character, so overall there was a great mix of emotions going on.
I particularly liked how it felt as though the main character was speaking to you, telling you how her life was going. It made me feel more involved with the story.
The chapters were fairly short which kept the story moving. There was always something happening and this technique kept my attention. There was a good flow to the book, which made it easy to read.
The characters were great. I loved the relationship that the main character had with her brother and how they were there for each other when their parents were having their own problems.
There were some lovely moments between the main character and each of her potential suitors. I really wasn't sure how it was going to end!
The relationship between the main character and the other writers was interesting. It really made me feel for the main character. She tried so hard to fit in with them, when really there should have been equal effort from all parties. Having this storyline running through gave the main story a grounding and a more serious note.
Lastly the settings. They were wonderfully described. I really wanted to be there! The description of the food was also excellent. As soon as someone starts describing food, they are on to a winner with me!
As per usual, Portia has given us a book that has it all- fake dating, one bed, friends to lovers, meet cute. miscommunication-every trope under the sun and yet it still works. I loved all the little side stories-they were so wel flushed out and the humor, oh my gosh, the humor! This is a rom com that is heavy on the com. and that makes it a win for me! It is also closed door so if you don't like steam with your romance, you'll be good with this one. The story takes a look behind the scenes of the publishing industry as Amber is a struggling author and her editor sends her on a retreat in France with other authors to get some inspiration when her latest work in progress needs a lot of help. While she's there she meets Caleb, who's an influencer who needs help promoting some items while keeping his breakup a secret, and agrees to help her book to try and get it done so she get back home in time for Christmas The writing was light, funny and engaging and the chapters were short which made it easy to fly through the story-And of course there was the gorgeous setting. It sounds like paradise! And the food sounded amazing too! Overall this was another winner by Portia for me Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
Amber has successfully released three romantic comedies. While she has found a following, her editor is unhappy with her current project. Encouraging her to up the spice they offer up a writing retreat to the French Alps. Will the trip provide creative inspiration, or will it remind her of who she is as an author?
You Had Me At Chateau is the latest release by best-selling author, Portia MacIntosh. As with all of her books, MacIntosh will have you entertained with her signature laugh out loud humor. I couldn’t put the book down as I read about all of the compromising situations Amber found herself in.
This a terrific book to read if you are looking for an escape. It features a number of popular tropes, Christmas scenes, and sweet love story.
Special thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood Books, and Portia MacIntosh for allowing me to read the book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book weaves together a fun, heartfelt story with moments of deep reflection, all while taking place in the beautiful Swiss Alps. It’s more than just a scenic backdrop, though; the real focus is on the characters’ journeys of self-discovery and learning what truly matters in life.
What I found especially touching was how the story emphasized the importance of accepting help. The characters go through personal struggles and growth, showing that strength doesn’t always come from going it alone, but from leaning on others when needed.
It’s a story that feels both uplifting and thought-provoking, offering valuable insights while keeping you engaged in the characters’ adventures and personal transformations.
Listened to this, and I really enjoyed it. I was listening to this as I was also listening to The Choice Embrace the possible by Dr Edith Eva Egar, a memoir of a Holocaust survivor, psychology, and our daily lives. I remember reading Victor Frankel’s Man’s search for meaning, maybe in college. It was profound.
So this book wasn’t necessarily profound, but it was really lovely and a lot of ways and a nice backdrop and escape from the rest of this really kind of sometimes horrifying world. It is so hard to listen to Dr’s book the choice and not think about what is happening right now in the worldworld in particular in Gaza.
Books really do offer a different perspective, a narrative of our lives, our families, communities, and countries. I just don’t know what to make up the horror that we’re doing to one another. It’s nice to send love out into the world.
Amber Page, a writer with a hit series under her belt, struggling to connect with her current manuscript. She dreams of weaving in more comedic murder mysteries with just a hint of love, Unfortunately, her editor has other ideas and insists on upping the heat to inject some ‘spice’ into her book. The thought alone makes Amber cringe, and does not manage a single word. Their solution? A writer’s retreat in a charming French resort in the Alps. It’s here Amber crosses paths with Henri, the hotel’s future proprietor. The story also throws in a love triangle with Caleb, a reality TV bachelor and social media influencer - all while trying to juggle her own family drama as her parents teeter on the edge of divorce.
I love books that are set in the publishing industry! The story gives us an insight behind the scenes which I enjoyed very much. Whilst reading the book I was wondering if Portia actually had this discussion with her editor before as this book was a "closed-door" one (I guess her other books as well?!).
This novel is almost a love letter to romantic comedies themselves, incorporating every classic trope: fake dating, sharing one bed, friends-to-lovers, miscommunication, and an unforgettable meet-cute. The side stories shine just as brightly, from Amber’s parents navigating a “pre-divorce” phase to the camaraderie among the female romance authors at the retreat and the layered histories of Henri and Caleb. I would have liked to have seen more interaction with the other authors at the retreat. In my opinion, there wasn't enough of that.
The highlight of the book was definitely the picturesque setting brims with vivid details. It’s safe to say I now have a newfound urge to visit the French Alps myself! This was a warm, entertaining read that left me with a smile on my face.
If you’re in the mood for something breezy and entertaining, this might just be the perfect pick.
This literally was the perfect mix of rom plus com. It was so funny but the chemistry between the main characters was just so good.
I was a bit nervous when reading the description and seeing that this was about a love triangle because I feel like there are times where it’s hard to really feel the connection with the person who gets chosen because there’s also been time spent on someone else. And while there was someone else, there certainly was no denying the connection with the male main character and I loved seeing their interactions.
I didn’t love the typical ‘third act conflict’ but I do think the way it was handled was well done. I also didn’t care for the pre-divorce storyline with Amber’s parents, so those are the reasons this was more of a 4 than a 5 for me. But speaking of her family, I could not be more obsessed with Tom. Their sibling relationship was literally perfection, I loved that they were genuinely friends and just so good to each other.
Another win by Portia MacIntosh. Read this book. I’m ready to go to a ski resort now, or at least to France to eat all the bread and cheese.
Thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of this book! I voluntarily read this book, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Honestly, I needed the hapless FMC Amber and her train wreck life in this story to get me through my tough spot, and it worked! Amber is an author and stuck in a rut. She is meant to write romcoms, but her heart wants to write cosy murder mysteries. She finds herself sent to France for an exclusive writers' retreat with some of her publishers' other romance-writing queens, but it's not them who give her the inspo she needs! Amber has been asked to spice up her books, and writing spice doesn't come naturally; however, the scrapes she finds herself in, with not one but two hot guys, give her plenty of chances to fill her notebooks! A light-hearted, funny read!
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was tough man. I was so invested in the main character and really loved who she was that at the end I was disappointed she ended up with the love interest that she did. I never enjoy the trope of clumsy embarrass herself female main characters, but I actually found myself laughing out loud at this book. The ending felt a bit rushed and I wished that there was more detail ON WHY she fell in love with this man because it just doesn’t feel believable to me.
An amazing story , funny and sweet . I must confess that it is the first book that I read of Portia MacIntosh but now she gain one more reader . Amber is a writer of romantic comedy but her editor asks her to write spice in her books something that it is not received very well by Amber . Her dream is to write a murder rom com but her editor is negative . She is sent at an exclusive château in the beautiful French Alps for inspiration for her book . There are two men she meets the influencer Caleb and the French caretaker Henri . Which man will touch her heart ? I received this book from netgalley , the author and the publicer as an ARC . Thank you . All thoughts and opinions are my own .
This may turn out to be a top 5 read of 2025! It had humor, romance, fun characters (who you may not like at first, but learn to love). I recommend this to all rom-com lovers, and especially to you, Jason Keller, Jr.
(I didn’t realize this story would take place around Christmas time. Christmas was more in this story than actual Christmas time books. But a good read for anytime of the year.)
This was a sweet little rom com. Or more specifically a book about writing rom coms. Yes another protagonist who is a bit wet and could stand up for herself more and very unrealistic men who only live in the world of fantasy. But it was light and amusing. A modern romance that was gentle and set in a Chateau in snowy France. Just a little bit of spice but lots of feel good factors.
