Saint is your typical good girl/ sheltered preacher's daughter (although you know what they say about preacher's kids 😉). Calder Bishop is the morally grey bad boy with a tortured past, the guy she's had a crush on forever. When she witnesses something she's not supposed to see, Calder is forced to bring her into his world, not knowing she'll ultimately become everything to him... even against his own family.
At first I didn't feel the connection between these two, and Saint was annoyingly innocent. But as the action picked up, I got into the story and by the end I was living them together. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️½

Sinner and Saint is the kind of dark romance that reels you in, and then slowly tightens it’s vice like grip, and the moment Calder Bishop and Saint slammed into each other on the page, I knew I was done for. Calder is the perfect blend of morally gray, and reigned in, dark, dangerous, with a sharp and quiet intensity that makes you feel like he’s a few steps ahead, and Saint is so resilient and guarded and so much stronger than she knows, with a hard won past that makes you never want to let her go. But what really made this story pop for me was the emotional tension, the ways in which Calder and Saint combust and build off each other, off of frustration and restraint and smoldering, deliberate, delicious, feels. J.L. Beck really knows how to toe the line, and while this book is dark, it’s not at the expense of vulnerability, it’s not at the expense of depth or dimension to these characters or their relationship, and the chemistry is constant and simmering in that *addictive* way. The spice is there, it is good, it is delicious and it definitely builds. And I so genuinely enjoyed my experience of this story, I loved the emotional payoff in that good way, in that makes you sit back and breathe way. Dark romance with depth, with complex, strong characters, with a connection that slowly devours? Sign me up.

This dark small-town mafia romance pulls you in with a deceptively quiet setting and steadily reveals just how dangerous things really are. The story centers on a crime family that essentially runs the town and a preacher’s daughter who has no idea what she’s walking into when she falls for one of the sons. Things take a sharp turn once she witnesses a murder—and from there, a forced marriage becomes the only way forward.
Despite the heavy themes, the romance is very well written. The pacing is slow but consistently so, which works in the book’s favor. Both the plot and the romance unfold gradually, creating tension without ever feeling dragged out. It’s a true slow burn that feels intentional and controlled rather than sluggish.
The characters are nicely developed and feel believable within the dark setting. You can clearly tell this is part of a larger series, yet the book still works well as a standalone without leaving you confused or missing essential information.
Overall, this is a solid, well-crafted dark mafia romance with strong atmosphere, good character work, and a steady, confident pace. A great pick if you enjoy small-town settings with a dark undercurrent and morally gray characters.

I usually enjoy J.L. Beck’s books, but this one didn’t quite check all the boxes for me. I prefer heroes who are dominant and powerful, not ones who are repeatedly beaten down by their fathers and remain under their command for most of the book, only for the final blow to come from the FBI rather than the hero himself.

Sinner & Saint starts as a dark story of obsession and survival, but quickly turns into a brutal exploration of power and control once Calder betrays his father by keeping Saint alive. When Roman Bishop discovers that Saint is alive, the story becomes vicious: Calder is publicly humiliated and beaten in front of his brothers, while Saint is forced into marriage and branded with a hot iron as Bishop property. Although Calder is emotionally devoted to her and clearly willing to die for her, his true break from Roman never fully feels like his own victory. Even at the climax, the collapse of Roman’s empire is driven more by law enforcement than by Calder finally putting his foot down. The ending leaves Calder and Saint together, scarred and traumatized, choosing each other in the aftermath of violence, but for me, the hero never fully steps into the dominant alpha role I expect—he survives rather than truly conquers.

I love all of her books. I feel like this one had a different overall vibe to it but I still loved it! Usually when authors write about a traumatic past/family, it’s usually in terms of the FMC but in this case, it’s the MMC, which I thought was a really unique take. It’s not quite a role reversal because he is morally grey but she has such strength and courage for someone who is young and had been very sheltered.
Calder is morally grey because of his father and upbringing. His father is truly a villain. Saint is a good girl from a good home. Their paths crossed and he tried to scare her off. After an unfortunate turn of events, he’s forced to take drastic steps, including kidnapping and forcing her into marriage, to keep her safe.
Calder tends to defer to his father - all the brothers do. She makes him want to be a better man and give her a better life. She gives him the strength to do what’s right and take action against his father. When he figures out a way to get them all out from under his thumb he takes it. While he may not have been the one to actually take him out, he was the catalyst behind everything.
This book has something for everyone. It was a great read and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!!

This story is the perfect collision of innocence and sin, faith and violence, love and damnation—and it works beautifully.

The “good girl”/town saint dynamic paired with Calder Bishop’s dangerous, morally gray presence is absolutely magnetic. Calder is everything you expect from a man born into blood and power—ruthless, protective, and unapologetically possessive—yet there's depth that makes his devotion impossible to resist. The tension between him and the Saint crackles with every interaction, making their connection feel both inevitable and explosive.

The setting of Black Hollow Creek adds a heavy, atmospheric weight to the story, and the stakes are high from start to finish. I loved how the author balanced dark romance elements with emotional vulnerability, showing how love can be just as dangerous—and just as powerful—as vengeance.

This book delivers on angst, obsession, and raw emotion without pulling punches. If you love dark romance with forbidden attraction, dangerous men who love fiercely, and heroines forced to confront who they really are, Sinner & Saint deserves a top spot on your TBR.

J.L. Beck proves once again that sometimes the most terrifying thing isn’t a monster’s wrath—but his love. 💔🔥

What a great start to a new series. This book was a roller coaster ride of chaos. Saint is the innocent preacher's daughter who has been watching the broody bad boy from a distance until one day she takes a chance and kisses him. Rejection is real. Calder is broody, grumpy and his father's enforcer. The Bishop's run Black Hollow Creek and the name along installs fear in people. Calder has always wanted Saint but doesn't want to bring him into mess his family is. When Saint opens the door to a traumatic scene, she is dragged into a world she didn't get a choice in. The story is fast paced, dark, gritty and full of obsession and survival. Calder will do anything to keep and protect Saint and show her that he truly does love her even betraying his own family. Saint struggles with not having choices and the loss of her freedom. Saint is strong and full of fierce passion that shows Calder he can trust lean on her. These two are opposites at every turn, he is ruthless and possessive while Saint is innocent but not as naive as everyone thinks, but they have an intense connection that burns hot. I as given this book as an ARC for my honest review.

Review:
If you’re tired of the standard “mafia” tropes and crave something with more dust, danger, and a dark Western edge, Ms. Beck delivers exactly that. This is a high-octane, emotionally charged start to a new series that hooked me from page one.

Saint: The preacher’s daughter who is far more than just a “good girl.” Innocent yet fiercely strong, watching her navigate loss and find her footing in a world of chaos is incredibly compelling.
Calder: The ultimate morally gray cowboy. Brooding, ruthless, and fiercely protective, Calder is the Bishop family enforcer whose obsession with Saint drives the story forward.

The chemistry between Saint and Calder is explosive. A risky kiss quickly spirals into a dark, fast-paced survival story after Saint witnesses a traumatic event. The opposites-attract dynamic is dialed up to eleven, with Calder torn between loyalty to his dangerous family and his undeniable obsession with Saint.

This book is gritty, steamy, and twisted in all the right ways. A roller coaster of chaos that’s both suspenseful and deeply emotional. I want nxt book Levi, Sawyer, and Kade. If you want a romance that burns hot and doesn’t pull punches, pick this up!

JL Beck is an auto-read author for me—if she writes it, I’m there. Once again, she delivers a dark, addictive story that pulled me in from the very first page and refused to let go. Black Hollow Creek is a gritty blend of mafia brutality and Wild West lawlessness, layered with secrets, betrayals, and a simmering enemies-to-lovers romance that burns slow and fierce.

Calder Bishop is everything I love in a morally grey hero: dangerous, possessive, ruthless—and impossible not to fall for. Beck excels at writing characters who are deeply flawed, sometimes outright bad, yet undeniably compelling. Calder is no exception. His collision with the town’s “good girl” creates a delicious tension where innocence meets violence, faith clashes with sin, and love becomes just as dangerous as hate. The chemistry is intense, the stakes are high, and the emotional pull is undeniable.

This book sets the tone perfectly, and I’m genuinely excited to see where this series goes next. Dark, gripping, and utterly consuming—this story is a powerful start and a reminder of why JL Beck remains at the top of my must-read list.

A nonstop plunge into danger, obsession, and turmoil. We loved every minute of it!

🖤 “Mafia meets Wild West” - Where faith is tested by violence and innocence is claimed by sin 🤍

Broody, ruthlessly protective Calder + preacher’s daughter Saint = obsession, danger, and a bond that burns hot in the dust and darkness of Black Hollow Creek. Their connection is intense, dangerous, and impossible to ignore, pulling her into a world she never chose but refuses to be weak in.

🖤 “You’re mine Saint, and I don’t let what’s mine sleep anywhere that I can’t protect it.”

Fast-paced, gritty, and emotionally charged with a dark Western edge, perfect for those who like their romance dangerous, twisty, obsessive, and unapologetically spicy.

This book definitely ticked a lot of boxes for me, it’s a dark cowboy/criminal family romance - it gave me Yellowstone vibes and in particular Rip’s character.

Our MCs are dark, broody and morally grey MMC Calder and the small town preacher’s daughter Saintlyn. Who have crossed paths over the years but when a situation happens Calder has to choose between the object of his obsession and family loyalty.

We love a corrupted good girl who comes into herself. I was a little worried for Saint to start with but she found her backbone eventually and I thought that the chemistry and spice between them were so good.

It’s my first time reading this authors work, I’m a convert and I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Grateful for being chosen to ARC read this book and leave an honest review.

A dark western romance and book one in the Black Hollow Creek series brought me to my knees when I started. Western, mafia style with a good girl falling for the bad boy, Calder and Saint are ferociously beautiful together! The spice, his filthy mouth, the danger, and the chemistry blazing between the two! Cowboys, and make them dark and morally grey, whoooojeez I may have a new type to lust after in books! Thrilling new series for Beck, absolutely slayed it as always. Her writing traps you in its words I Cannot wait for the second book, Branded & Broken in March. These Bishop boys are sin, and I’m ready for them!.

I'm struggling to read.

I dont want to give a spoiler, but the hole already appear from the mmc lies to his change strategy for fake marriage. Come on, this maybe fiction but expecting readers to take that plot line just like that?! No

I'm struggling to read, i keep skipping pages. And maybe thats why the chemistry between fmc and mmc...even when they have segs, i cant feel it.

Sorry, but the plot line, the chemistry, the charachters....the only one roused any feeling from me is the unhinged villain, Roman Bishop. See how i remember his name and not the main charachters?.

This book was dark, intense, and completely addictive. The good girl / bad man dynamic? Perfectly done. Calder Bishop is dangerous, possessive, and unapologetically ruthless and the moment he decides he wants her, there’s no escape.

The tension is thick, the obsession runs deep, and the love is just as deadly as the violence. Innocence collides with sin in the most consuming way, and I couldn’t put it down.

If you love dark romance, morally gray men, and obsessive devotion, this one is a must-read.

Western Romance

This is the first western themed romance that I have read by Beck, and I really liked it! I think this will be a good series!

Saint is the preachers daughter and all things good and virtuous. Her only weakness… Calder Bishop. She’s had a crush on the towns bad boy but always kept that to herself.

Calder is our morally grey cowboy enforcer who is dangerous and powerful. When their two lives suddenly collide, they have to make serious decisions in order to survive.

Very good western romance. Looking forward to more books in this series.

Sinner & Saint: A Dark Western Romance is the first book in J.L. Beck's Black Hollow Creek series. I loved reading and following Saintlyn/ Saint and Calder's opposites attract romance. Saint is the preachers daughter and a good girl in the eyes of the town, Calder is one of the members of the Bishop family that basically run the town whether honestly or not so honestly. One day she sees something she shouldn't have and it changes both their lives. I loved the beginning of this series and look forward to reading the next book.

Oh wow, this book was just had be on edge as I was on the fence with Calder, as I didn’t like him but then I did like him but then again I know he did things the way he did & why did because of who his dad was ut it still didn't make it any easier but when things started to get better finally between him & Saint that's when I could feel better for me towards Calder, he gets possessive & she's obsessive and then when they do things get good and spicy. As always in my opinion you can't go wrong when reading a JL Beck book so don't pass on this read. Can't wait for more on this series.

Saint has been crushing on Calder for a while, and he fought his feelings for her, but when fate pushes them together, sparks are flying. Although their story started slowly, once it picked up, it became a dark cowboy/enforcer romance. From the unexpected twists and secrets to the steam, danger, and drama, this is a great start to the Black Hollow Creek series. I can't wait to read the next book to find what happens next in the series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Witnessing something she should lands Saint in a situation ending with her married to Calder in order to stay alive.

Calder is everything J.L. Beck is known for in a MMC. The story is dark and keeps you reading long into the night!.

The Truth
Saint has always wanted Calder. The bad boy. Little did she know how bad until she’s in the thick of it with Calder and his family. The Bishop’s control everything but with Calder’s help, maybe not her.
