I seriously don’t know how this series keeps getting better with every volume. I finished this one wanting to jump straight into the next chapters because I wasn’t ready to leave the story yet. Every time I think I have some idea of where things are going, the Dark Spires introduces something new that pulls me in even more. I love that it answers some questions without giving away everything. It always leaves me curious enough to keep reading instead of making me feel frustrated. I also really like seeing more of the secondary characters. They’re not just there to back up Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo. They each have their own personalities, strengths, and reasons for doing what they do, which makes the world feel much bigger. And I have to mention Fu Wensheng because he’s so adorably funny. Every time he showed up, I couldn’t help smiling.
The only thing that really bothered me was how the story keeps taking away the players’ skills. I get it when it happens once because it forces everyone to think differently and adapt. But when it keeps happening, I honestly don’t think it’s good for the story. What’s the point of giving the characters these interesting abilities if they can just become unusable whenever it’s convenient? One of my favorite parts of this series is seeing how creative everyone gets with their skills, so it’s disappointing whenever that gets taken off the table. Thankfully, it wasn’t enough to ruin my enjoyment because everything else was still so engaging that I barely wanted to stop reading.
This is easily my favorite Unlimited Flow danmei novel so far. Every volume gives me another reason to love it even more, and this one was no exception. The mystery keeps pulling me in, the challenges always feel exciting, and I never feel like I know exactly what’s going to happen next. More importantly, I genuinely care about the characters, not just the main duo but the people around them too. That’s probably why I had such a hard time putting this volume down. The moment I finished, all I wanted was to keep reading.
