Rate this book
Join Solveig and Westley in the first installment of The Fallen Realms trilogy—an epic Norse mythology inspired adult romantasy that will have you gasping for air, kicking your feet, and yearning to take up your sword. Secrets and betrayals live around every corner and may make you question everything you think you know.

***

Not all is as it seems.

In a world abandoned by the gods, Solveig, Asgard’s illustrious general, is tasked by her queens to restore magic to the realms. With a surety that she will succeed, nothing can stop her, not even an unknown shadow that spreads throughout the world, darkening hearts and tearing allies apart. While on a mission to a mortal village, she’s confronted with a choice to fulfill her duty or save someone she loves. Never in her immortal life has she faced such fear when she lands in the hands of her enemies.

When Asgard calls to the Forest Fae for aid, their prince takes the opportunity to unearth centuries-old betrayals. Westley’s people are on the verge of extinction, and he will do anything to save them, even if that means living with the savage Vanir clan led by a ruthless general, whose identity has remained hidden from the world. He cannot let the ones responsible for destroying his people get away with their treachery—the gods demand justice.

While waging her own battle against the shadows that threaten to claim her, Solveig must work with the prince to keep her position in the Asgardian army and unlock the secrets of their stolen magic. If they don’t, the realms will succumb to the darkness and whims of an unknown enemy.

May Tyr guide your sword. May Frigg light your way. May Thor bring you home.

After Ragnarök, all nine worlds merged into one, and for centuries elves, fae, witches, giants, dwarves, and humans were forced to coexist. Eventually, humans grew tired of being the oppressed race and somehow managed to strip the immortals of their magic. Now, more than 150 years later, the immortals are still at war with humanity, trying to reclaim what they lost.

Solveig is a witch raised by the fae queens of Asgard. She serves as the general of their army, her identity carefully concealed from the world. During a raid on a human village, she’s captured and brutally tortured for three months before finally escaping. But the experience leaves her deeply traumatized, and she may no longer be fit to lead.

At the same time, representatives of three immortal races gather to choose a general, including West, the prince of Idavoll — the very fae kingdom responsible for Solveig’s imprisonment. Neither of them trusts the other. West is searching for a traitor aiding the humans, while Solveig wants revenge on the people responsible for her torture. Meanwhile, her ex and former second-in-command, Latham, is scheming in the background to officially take her place as general.

I’ll say it right away: I absolutely loved this book. Solveig is such a fantastic heroine. She’s strong and intelligent without being reckless or insufferable. After everything she endured, she doesn’t magically heal through the power of love. She struggles with PTSD, nightmares, and the slow process of putting herself back together. Above all, she always puts her people first, which is why she suppresses her feelings for Latham. She knows that if it came down to it, she would choose him over her soldiers, and she refuses to risk their safety because of that. His betrayal, combined with the torture she survived, nearly destroys her, but she still finds the strength to keep fighting. And honestly, the betrayal levels in this book are absolutely insane.

I really liked West too. Finally, an MMC who isn’t just a brooding grump stomping around and growling at everyone))) Yes, he’s powerful, tall, and an exceptional warrior, but he’s also capable of admitting when he’s wrong. I especially loved the flashbacks to his childhood and youth, where he openly acknowledges that he used to be an arrogant idiot who let power go to his head. And his banter with Solveig? Pure gold. The tension between them? I’m speechless. This slow burn belongs in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, I swear. The three of us, me and the two main characters, were suffering the entire time. I think my brain is still fried, honestly))) I suspect they’re fated mates, but the relationship is written so well that I don’t even care.

On top of all that, the book has an engaging plot and rich worldbuilding inspired by Norse mythology. My only issue was figuring out the approximate time period of the human world. There are indirect mentions of cameras and a few modern terms, yet the immortals still fight primarily with swords, axes, and bows. Maybe the next books will explore that in more detail, since this is planned to be a trilogy.

The final twist threw me off a little, but since the story is told in third person POV, I can overlook it.

I should also mention that the book contains torture, wartime brutality, and graphic violence, so keep that in mind before picking it up.

Oh my gosh where do I even start
The word building in this book is quite heavy, but so worth it. Sara’s writing is extraordinary.
Solveig, our FMC, is an absolute badass that had me falling for her long before I fell for our MMC, Westley. Their slow burn is absolute torture.
The banter and one liners had me literally laughing out loud throughout.
Every time I thought I knew where this book was going I was hit with yet another brutally amazing twist.
I have the immediate urge to go reread the whole book. ♾️ stars, I’m already desperate for the next book after that ending.
Thank you so much Sara for sending me an eARC to read!

I was fortunate enough to get an ARC copy from Sara and this book did.not. disappoint.

I LOVED this book. It was so exciting, emotional and I couldn’t put it down (except for Christmas time). The betrayals in the book I did not see coming and that ending was completely unexpected but so good. I need book 2 right now please because I’m dying to know what happens next.

Thank you Sara! 🩵

Have you ever read a book and then regretted it once you've finished? Well you wont with this one, for being a first book into a world I literally couldn't put it down and read it under 24hrs. The only negative I have it that I have 6months to wait for book 2, and I can only hope I can fill that time. The world building and magic system was easy to follow, the Norse Mythology was great and not hard at all if you've read any prior tou wont be disappointed. I had an inkling into a twist but the twists kept coming and that ending...Chef's Kiss!!

I recieved an ARC copy for an honest review.

If you love vikings. Norse Mthology. If you loved Throne of Glass. And if you love all manners of mythical creatures, we are talking Fae, witches, Dwarves and Elves, plus more. You will love this! The first line of this book. I knew from this point onwards, this was my kind of story!

This book is so freaking good. I am drooling for the next one. The ending has me in a chokehold. I have so many questions and so many theories!!

Solveig (pronounced Sol-vay for noobs like me) the FMC. Fierce, Funny but so Fragile. The absoloute heartbreaking moments that instantly gave me the Aelin from TOG vibes.
The first few chapters were all world building, I was very sleep deprived so it took a bit to wrap my head around. But I got there and I am SO GLAD I DID because after that HOLY HOOKED.

Solveig is just incredible. She has some power that is unchecked but you don't see it until very late in the book and there is probabaly more to explore with her. To see her magic unfold!
The side characters were so lovable apart from some, Latham absoloute jerkface. Could and would punch right in his face. Then theres Connie, and Gerrie, and the shieldmadens. The banter and the humour, I laughed out loud a few times.

Then we met the MMC. Big huge Fae prince. Instant rivals. It is a sloooooooow burn with pining and yearning and tension and this by far was just soooooo good. I loved it.

Then the ending.... and now... I just have so many questions.... and I am really sad I can't keep reading.

Will 100000% be buying this book to put on my shelf.

Dawn of Violent Skies is Powerful!

This book had me intrigued from page one. I love Norse Mythology and I love magic. This had everything, devastation, destruction, death and Political intrigue. Let’s not forget slow burn 🔥

Our FMC is strong, powerful, respected and intelligent. This book is character driven with beautifully written lore and world building. The dialogue between characters is emotional, meaningful and engaging. The banter is intense, but full of sass, insults and no holds barred innuendos. I was kicking my feet with glee.

The story is beautifully written and executed. Sara Clement delivers an emotionally charged, powerful tale of one women’s journey to save her people, no matter the cost to herself.

5 STAR ⭐️ read, truly phenomenal. That cliffhanger has me screaming and anxious for book two!

**I received an ARC in exchange for honest opinion.

What a great way to start 2026!

I love Sara's writing but I was NOT prepared for this book. I just finished and I straight up white girl can't even right now.

I knew there were going to be twists. I'm usually pretty good at figuring them out, but damn, there were a few here that I was NOT expecting. The ending was just 🤯

Sol and West have so much chemistry and the tension is *chef's kiss*
[[Spoiler]] If they're not fated mates, I will riot. It seems so obvious, I am pulling my hair out. Just making it known that I'm rooting for them 4ever.

Sara is so good at bringing characters to life. My immediate first thought about Latham was "fuck this guy." Will he be redeemed or is he a lost cause? Who knows? Not me, because I foolishly started another fantasy romance series and now I have to WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!

I digress.

I really liked getting to know all the characters.
I love Solveig's character! (I can assure you, I am not pronouncing their names right in my head). She's a badass FMC, which are my favourite kind!

There's no spice in this book, and I'm not even mad about it. There are great action scenes, lots of banter, sassy horses, Norse mythology, and lots of scenes that had me yelling at my Kindle.
[[Spoiler]] Wtf happened to Gerrie, Sara!?

Simply for how often I think about this story when I'm not reading, it deserves all the stars. I can't wait for the next book!!

Thank you to Sara for yet another amazing ARC!

I was lucky enough to be given an eBook ARC of this from Sara Clement. THANK YOU.

What can I say? excellent world building that was complete, but didn't bore you. Sol, our FMC, is a badass war general who fights hard to protect her people...even the ones who may not deserve it. Westley is our Prince, who comes into camp and captures us all in his web. THAT CLIFFHANGER ENDING, SARA 😳 I can't wait for book 2!!

TLDR: A book so good and so completely mind gripping that it tuned out my husband’s snoring while reading at 1am… a task I thought impossible…until now.

This was my first opportunity to be a part of an ARC team and I never thought I’d be upset to read a book early….because now I have longer to wait for the next one!!! I received the ebook in exchange for my honest review and BOY DO I HAVE A REVIEW. Buckle up, it’s a long one. (I had a lot of thoughts ok? I was pumped up. Sara lit a spark in me and ignited my excited and intense passion, blame her not me. I’m innocent…)

…anyway!

Sara has mentioned how this book is her baby and she has spent many many years with this story, watching it shift and transform over the years. Because she has dedicated so many years to this story, I feel it’s only fair to give this review the same level of attention because this story deserves it. I can FEEL the passion and care that went into this book and that’s always what I crave.

Here’s the thing: I read a lot of books. Nonstop. Every day. I have immersed myself into so many worlds that sometimes most of them kind of meld together. However, there are a select few that stand out and those reasons are usually due to how an author made me feel on a deeper level. Authors that light a fire in me, make me stop and think, surprise me, and pull me into their world. Sara did just that for me. I am an artist myself so I’m always finding myself analyzing every detail, finding patterns, recognizing earned moments, and more. Often I’m disappointed by what seems to be lazy writing/story building with the same story line and not a lot of substance or build. It can get pretty old. So when a book like this comes along, it’s like being jolted awake.

If you love Throne of Glass, this will be an easy favorite for you. Our FMC Solveig gives off major Aelin vibes so I felt immediately drawn to her. She is strong, resilient, loyal, and stubborn. We LOVE a strong badass FMC. I felt like her struggles and journey were so well thought out and written. Nothing felt forced and we even got to be on the rollercoaster with her. By the end I felt like I knew how she ticked and that’s due to the thoroughness and cleverness of Sara’s writing.

Our MMC is Westley and let me just say I already have so many theories. I felt like Sara gave us juuuust enough info and story of West to love him but also be wary. I feel like he has so many layers we haven’t seen and instead of just exposing them all, Sara methodically planted the seeds. This is a big reason why I’m so excited for the second book because I feel like we will see those layers unravel not only for the first time for us but also new layers that he discovers of himself that we get to see in real time.

Also the slow burn between Sol and West? Absolutely wrecked me. So much sexual tension, such a tease but in the best way where I know the reward will be that much sweeter and so completely worth the torture. I’m itching for more. I have so many thoughts and theories, my brain is buzzing!

I also wrote down in my notes a theory that I sensed in my gut in the first 100 pages that ends up having some truth to it but also SO much unknown and I stand by it. Along with that, I also noticed several strategically placed words, phrases, and patterns that show throughout the entire book but are so subtle you could miss it if you blink. It truly felt like a puzzle and I think I caught a lot of her hints while at the same time I know I missed some which makes me even more excited to keep going. I don’t want to mention any of them because part of the excitement for myself was picking up on these things so I want that for other readers too.

Normally it takes awhile for new fantasy books to pique my interest at the start, but it really only took 2 chapters to hook me. And even those chapters I just felt intrigued. Like I wasn’t too sure what was happening but there was the perfect amount of world building and present action to kind of ease the reader into the story. One of my favorite things about Sara’s world building is how she sprinkles in the background info. She gives you enough to have a general understanding at first and then comes back to touch base on it several times, sliding it into a scene seamlessly. It didn’t feel forced or out of place. It felt natural and smooth. It was so much more enjoyable and easier to follow when being sprinkled throughout the beginning section of the book rather than entire chapters dedicated to just world building, which can be ROUGH. I found myself so into the story at times that those little moments were kind of like a breath of fresh air to have a moment of stillness and recovery. Like I was in the world!! Absorbing info at the right time, just like how she is telling Sol’s info slowly, not pushing her with info that she isn’t ready for when she’s healing.

I think I might come back and add onto some specifics of this review later on but wanted to keep things spoiler free for now. I truly feel this book/series has the potential to be something BIG. And I feel so so excited to tell the world about it.

Thank you so much Sara for trusting me with your baby. I am genuinely blown away and thrilled to have found your words. June can’t come soon enough!!!

My initial review:

Ohmygosh!!! It’s currently 3am.. and I just spent the last three hours reading on my Kindle in the dark because I simply could NOT put it down or go to sleep until I had answers. And that ending! Omgggg The ultimate cliffhanger. I am absolutely dying to read the next one.

This was so well done. I devoured it. Everything was perfectly balanced. The world building, the character development, and oh my gosh the tension!! So delicious. I can’t say much more without giving anything away but MY GOSH this was good.

I honestly don’t think I have been this invested in a character’s development and relationship since Sarah J Maas.

It’s very fast paced in comparison to TOG and yet it still gives a lot of the same vibes. Very well done. All the stars!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you so much to author Sara Clement for the ARC edition. I’m honored.

My detailed review a couple days later:

I was immediately drawn to this book when I heard it was a fantasy with Norse mythology. My great grandpa immigrated to the US from Norway as a teen and I've always been drawn to the Scandinavian culture.

When I found out the FMC's name is Solveig I was even more excited. My great grandpa's youngest sister was named Solveig, and I heard lots of stories growing up from my Grandma about "Aunt Solveig."

I dug right into this book and I was instantly hooked. The writing felt so smooth and natural, and with a nice steady pace. It felt like I was listening to a story from a friend.

Solveig is so amazing and strong, with major "eldest daughter" vibes. She is so protective of her people and determined to do what she feels is right. She feels like a combination of Aelin and Manon from Throne of Glass.

Honestly, this whole book felt like I was back in Sarah J Maas's world. Not because the story or world was similar. It's actually very different and unique. It was because I was so invested in the storyline, completely immersed in the world, and attached to these characters.

I stayed up until 3am reading the last 30% of this book. It's so action-packed, and the intrigue is so strong. The plot twists and betrayals took my breath away and I ached along with Solveig.

And of course we can't forget the romance! The TENSION! Oh my gosh. Epic slow-burn, and I'm absolutely dying to see where this goes. The chemistry between these two is killer.

I could go on and on about this book. Fantastic writing. Amazing well-developed characters. There is a lot of discussion around torture and trauma recovery and it's handled so so well. The world-building is gradual and steady, so it's easy to pick up as you go. None of the character development or anything felt forced. I am just blown away and I cannot wait to see where this story goes.

é absolutamente óbvio aonde o relacionamento deles irá chegar e i'm ready for it!! quero realmente saber mais sobre ele e porque ele fez o que fez.

“Any male - or female, for that matter - in power who rules with an iron fist and a stubborn heart is a danger to everything we hold dear. It is almost worst to sit by and condone such behaviour, explaining it away with platitudes.”

I don’t know how to begin this review. I don’t think that words will do it justice. I am so overwhelmed with how much I LOVED this book. It kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I was fascinated with the world the novel creates - a world after Ragnarok where the gods are dead and magic is gone, blocked, stolen. Knowing that it has Norse mythology as foundation is one of the reasons for me getting pulled into this book. But it is the novel’s female protagonist, Solveig, who captured my heart. I was fascinated with her strength, her resilience, and her power. As Asgardian war general, she leads her people with wisdom and strength. But she is not all hard and tough, she also has her vulnerabilities. And most importantly, she has a big heart, a heart that only those whom she trusts knows.

And yes, trust is the big issue. This novel will take you into a story where you don’t know who you can trust, where traitors are everywhere, and Solveig will have to figure out who her true friends and allies are. Betrayal abounds and there are traitors in every corner.

The biggest test for Solveig is her uncanny connection to Westly, Prince of the Idavoll Faes - a group whom Solveig sees more as enemy than ally. This uncanny connection makes for the slowest of all slow burns as Solveig and Westly resist this tension between them. For this reason, there is also so much yearning and banter because if they can’t succumb to the pull, then they will use words as their outlet. In this weird relationship of enemies to reluctant allies, Solveig and Westly do develop somewhat of a friendship as Westly provides Solveig comfort in moments when she is haunted. For while Solveig’s strength seems mostly defined by her talent as a war general, it is her inner strength and battle with PTSD that is the true test of her character. Solveig is the embodiment of battling the haunting aftermath of survived torture, of the trauma that permanently scars a soul no matter how strong.

Just when you feel that you can finally breathe and things are finally settling down, this story will turn and slam you with new revelations that will make you question everything you know. Because, my god, that ending! I think I just read my first god-tier book of 2026! I need book 2 STAT!!!

Wow…my first 5-star read of 2026!

I’ve read books by this author before, so I was familiar with her writing style, but let me just say… this book completely took me by surprise in the best possible way. Sara truly took her storytelling to another level with her first book in The Fallen Realms trilogy.

This was an absolute roller coaster ride. From start to finish, the story kept me captivated for all 500+ pages, and there is nothing more satisfying as a reader than barely being able to put a book down—then immediately wanting to pick it back up again.

There is some necessary world-building in the first few chapters, and some of the names and places a little tricky to pronounce - but honestly, none of that mattered. The story is so compelling that you just keep reading, trusting that everything will eventually fall into place (and it absolutely does).

This book delivers centuries-long wars between realms, featuring fae, elves, witches, mortals, and more. If you enjoy Norse mythology, you’re going to love this adult romantasy. It’s packed with deception, corruption, violence, torture, and nonstop action that keeps the pacing tight and addictive. I literally read more than half the book in one sitting—it was that good.

The story centers around Solveig, Asgard’s General, and Westley, the Royal Prince of the Fae. Both are on a mission to restore magic to the realms after it has been blocked for years. Circumstances force them together as they begin to uncover the truth behind the stolen magic. Walls are high, trust is scarce, and not everything is as it seems.

Solveig is impossible not to love—she’s the embodiment of resilience, empathy, and strength. She fights relentlessly for her people and, ultimately, for herself.
And that ending… 🤯 Ugh. I need book two immediately.

If you’re looking for a new adult romantasy with high stakes, fast pacing, rich world-building, and memorable characters, I highly recommend checking this book out.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this e-arc and provide my honest thoughts.

I’m going to start with a moment of silence for the person I was before reading this book. Because when I tell you this book is excellent! And when I say excellent I mean truly a masterpiece.

From chapter one I was immersed into this beautifully defined and detailed world. I fell in love with Solveig from the first page. She’s our FMC who absolutely goes through it from early on. Reading about everything she endures and experiencing it with her is heartbreaking. My eyes did get watery a few times during her healing journey. The way she survives and has to continually remind herself of her survival and how she “got out” is described so soul wrenchingly amazing.

Sol goes through it and it never really lets up. She is who I want to be when I grow up- strong, firm in her beliefs, just, intelligent and overall can take anyone down. The way we have POVs from other characters helps to really understand and define how tough Sol is and how much she is respected.

The dialogue and banter was also so on point. I could not read it fast enough. The yearning also gave me all the chills.

Now Westley- Westley out MMC who really draws you in given his unique background and his role within the story. But I’m still in shock so I can’t even say much more here.

The plot was perfectly paced with world building thrown in at perfect timing so I never felt too overwhelmed by it.

Now for the twists and cliffhanger. I am still fully recovering. Done beautifully (much to my anger about having to wait til the next book). I didn’t see one of ✨the✨final twist, and it hit hard. Ms. Clement did an amazing job at throwing us off the trail and just used us as a punching bag with some of those twists. It worked beautifully. Soul breaking but beautiful none the less

Wow- speechless- even hours later! Thank you to Sara Clement for the opportunity to ARC read Sol’s story!

The Dyslexic Reviewer - Spoil Free Reviews

Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Author: @authorsaraclement
POV: Multi 3rd person
Gene: Norse mythology/Romantasy
Triggers: Graphic torture & War Violance, etc.
Read Time: 8-12 hours
Expected Publishing Date: Out Now

❤️ World Building: The world building was important in this story, so it started off a little heavy in the beginning but it was so worth it to continue reading, because it all became rolled into the story and was important to it.

❤️ The Characters: Solveig was an amazing character, she is strong and some might call her cold, but that is what is required in a leader of an army. Latham, I knew where that was going right away, but I’ll leave that for you to discover. Westly was a super sweet almost cinnamon roll character.

❤️ The Story: The story was EPIC! There are so many twists and turns, and so many secrets and mysteries in this novel! It does end on a massive cliffhanger, so be aware of that. I personally don’t mind a good cliffhanger!

❤️‍🔥Overall: All I can say is that I CAN NOT wait for the next book!!!

🐉Jörmungandr Fact Inspired by Norse mythology (and my tattoo): While Jormungandr has the appearance of a mighty serpent, he is in fact a giant, son of the trickster Loki, who despite living alongside the Aesir gods in Asgard was a giant, and the giantess Angrboda, whose name means ‘bringer of anguish’ in old Norse. Jormungandr was brother to two further children of the giant couple, the giant wolf Fenrir, and the Underworld Goddess Hel. (valhalla-vikings.co.uk)

I was gifted this book free for my honest opinion, you know the drill 😉

i received this ARC in exchange for a honest review.

This book absolutely delivers. The worldbuilding is next‑level. Rich, detailed, and so deeply woven with Norse mythology that you feel like you’re walking straight into a mythic saga. It’s one of those fantasy settings that feels massive and lived‑in, with history and magic that never stop being intriguing.

Solveig, our FMC, is an absolute force of nature. Respected war general? Check. Badass? Double check. What I loved most was how her healing from trauma wasn’t rushed or sugarcoated. It was messy, real and made her feel human despite being surrounded by immortal chaos.

The slow burn romance between our leads? Hot damn...it was so good. The tension, the yearning and that electric pull don’t rely on quick schemxy scenes. They’re built on emotion, restraint, and connection. So satisfyin

This story uses multiple POVs and it works beautifully. It gives so much context to the world, the characters and the stakes. There’s mystery, magic, betrayal and those twists that keep you flipping pages. Some plot turns might be predictable if you’ve read a lot of fantasy. But honestly? That didn’t dampen my enjoyment one bit. The writing, the character depth, the mythic elements… it still had me soooo deeply hooked.

And that ending?! Wow. Absolutely gut wrenching. It hit so hard I’m still not over it. 😱 I’m ridiculously grateful I got an early copy, but now I’m begging for book two 🥲 If you love rich worldbuilding, Norse inspired fantasy, slow‑burn tension and characters you actually care about, this is a must read!

We all chuckle at the common phrase, "Here this book brutally ripped my heart out. Read it" when it is used in memes BUT HI, "This book brutally ripped my heart it. GO READ IT"

First and foremost, The FMC, Solveig, PURE GODDESS, RAIDANCE, STRENGTH, POWER. This story is character driven but does not lack in plot in the slightest. The combination is flawlessly executed as I felt the character's feelings and felt my own with each step of the incredible journey the book provides.

Just when I thought I had everything and everyone figured out Sara absolutely clobbered me(in the best way). This is a MUST READ for fantasy/romantasy lovers. Immediately add it to the top of your list!

Well damn!
I'm not sure how to articulate how brilliant this book is.
Please do check the trigger warnings before reading.

it's safe to say I'm a fan of Norse mythology, so I was drawn to this book initially because of the links to Norse mythology.
Solvieg is such a strong character, her actions and reactions are completely understandable.
The world building is done so well and I need to know what happens next, not just with Solveig but for the world in general in this series.
That ending as well! What a place to leave it.

This is my ARC Review for Dawn of Violent Skies.

Oh my goodness, this was so great! There’s a lot of world building, and a lot of character development which is to be expected for the first book of a fantasy series. I loved Solveig and Westley’s chemistry and banter. I can’t wait for Book Two, because I have some questions that I hope will be answered! I was left wanting for more and with excitement for wanting to continue on Solveig and Westley’s journey. Thank you so much for the opportunity to ARC read this awesome start to a great series!

What a ride, this was such a great book! I loved the world and the character building. I was a huge fan of all the sass and banter that Solveig and The Prince brought to the table. I am very curious to see what book 2 brings!

Dawn of Violent Skies by Sara Clement is an intriguing Norse mythology-inspired romantasy debut that earns a 3-star rating from me. Set 150 years after mortals waged war and erased magic from the realms, it follows war general Solveig Tordottir in a dark world where gods are dead, mysteries abound, and not everything appears as it seems. The premise has strong potential with its gritty, post-apocalyptic fae realms, political intrigue, and hints of slow-burn romance amid the tension.
Solveig is a compelling protagonist—fierce, battle-hardened, and navigating a world of shifting alliances—and the Norse-inspired elements add atmospheric flavor to the fallen realms. However, the pacing feels uneven, with some sections dragging while others rush through key developments, and I wanted more depth in the worldbuilding and character motivations to fully immerse me.Overall, Dawn of Violent Skies shows promise as the first in the Fallen Realms trilogy, particularly for fans of dark romantasy with mythology vibes, but it needed tighter execution to shine. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Dawn of Violent Skies

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🫑 -> the burn is SLOOOW

By Sara Clement

Holy. Freaking. Moly.

Throne of Glass level emotional damage and plot.

You want to stay up till 1am devouring heart pounding, heart wrenching, rage filled plot? Good. Cause thats what I did.

This story is dark, violent, gruesome, thought provoking, rage inducing, tearful, raw, gritty and I knew from the first line I was going to love Solveig and her story.

"Solveig was going to rip this males insides out through his c*ck."

*nodding* 'Nuff said.

There is some intense theory/world building, this wasnt a book I could read fast - not because I didnt want to, but so I could fully understand as we go. Im just not super familiar with Norse mythology is all.

Solveig is a 400 year old Vanier living in a makeshift war camp/village serving as a general to Asgard's armies. After a raid on a mortal village goes wrong, Solveig is imprisoned by those seeking information on the illusive hidden war camp. After escaping she faces the ramifications of her imprisonment and has to prove she is still able to lead as general. While plots and hidden agendas are at play, a fae prince and his party of dignitaries visits the camp to evaluate Solveigs ability to lead - obviously with hidden motives of thier own. Battling her trauma, fighting to keep her title, seeking revenge on her captors Solveig also has do right this inexplicable connection to the fae prince. Navigating her nightmares, the prince and forces at play the Forest Fae Prince and Solveig must work together to keep her position and uncover the secrets of thier stolen nagic.

Solveig is giving major Aelin vibes - if Aelin was a 400 yr old Vanier and War General. Solveig is an absolute badass. Highly regarded as a fighter, advocate for her people, prideful, cunning, tough as nails, snarky, mean and funny. Her relationship with her friend Gerrie was hilarious with MANY laugh out loud moments. Solveigs ride or die. I can't put into words how much I loved her character. She's unrelenting, and the woman has her priorities straight. The vengeance, grace, the 'you dont get to speak to me that way'. I really REALLY liked that she didnt sit on her truth to make other comfortable. She said how she felt, drew her boundaries, and didnt budge.

Westley was... the perfect combination of broody warrior but yet like, emotionally intelligent? He's got the classic hidden agendas but is a SIMP for Solveig. Drawn to her, seeking her out, following her, training her...yet hating her. Omg love. Incredible banter.

The ending had me sat. SAT. I agreed with EVRRYTHING Solveig did. She has her priorities STRAIGHT. I love that the author doesn't sacrifice her character to get with the MMC. And the betrayals! Theres so many. Once you read this, DM me so we can scream together. I can't wait to get my grabby hands (and broken heart) on the sequel to get some answers. Solveig is keeping so much from me!

Thank you Sara Clement for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.

oh my lord. where do I even starttt

Sara. thank you for giving me this book as an Arc reader.

this review is 100% my own thoughts and feelings and completely honest.

This book had me crying and screaming in anger, frustration, sadness and need for more.

If you love mythical creatures, Norse mythology, Fae, giants, elves, and so so much more this is definitely the book for you.

Sol deserves so so much better then Latham.
Speaking of, he lost my respect the moment he didn't listen. I hate this man but he's so crucial to the plot

I want to make it very clear that I will be reading the second book when it comes out. This book was amazing.

The world building is great, a little slow paced at the start. Took me about 5 chapters to really actually want to read the book and that's why there's half a star missing. (that's just personal opinion)

However, I could read about the Prince and the General all damn day. I'm obsessed with their weird, feisty, yet almost rude but also cute relationship they have. I'm using relationship loosely here, they just ahhh I'm rooting for them so so damn hard.

I love that while this book is about Asgaurd and the gods there's more to it on a deeper level.

Between betrayal, exhaustion, PTSD, sadness and 𝙵𝙴𝙰𝚁 how will Sol overcome her challenges. will she be able to feel love again?

who fucking knows because the book ends on a cliffhanger *sobbing screaming crying*
Yet I NEED more. I NEED the second book and it's not often that I feel like that.

I can't explain how good this book is. just read the book *throws it at you* it's bloody amazing

Wow. This book is long and so worth it. The world building is so good and the depth to the storyline is incredible.

If you are into Norse mythology, reluctant allies, slow burn filled with lots of tension and banter, layers of secrets, court politics, and some series twists and turns, this book is for you.

We follow Solveig, our FMC, a few centuries after Ragnarok. She is a bad ass and super fierce war general who has a soft heart. She is endures quite the journey and we get to see her tackle demons that haunt both her mind and real life. *Be warned there is graphic descriptions of torture and war.*

From the moment Latham was introduced, I knew he was a walking and talking red flag and that’s all I will say about the dirtbag.

Westley is a complicated man and I have seriously mixed emotions on him and everything that went down with him and Solveig. I have no idea how he could behave the way he did with her knowing what he had done. I wanted so badly to be wrong about him and his recent past, and I was so disappointed when I was proved right. I also have theories about these two, but no spoilers, so they will stay inside thoughts.

And fucking Trella is an absolute snake and I hope she has a befitting end in a future book. Laeknir broke my heart.

All this to say, June can’t get her quickly enough so I can devour Book 2.

I received an ARC of this book. This review is voluntary and represents my own thoughts and opinions.

The cruelty in this story is something else. It was so well done and had me at the edge of my seat for the second half.

The first half was mostly world building and character growth. A lot of it was the same scenario for a long time but the second half was something else entirely. I read over 200 pages on the last day.

I am desperate for book 2 and I don't know how I will feel. At this point I am just angry about it all. Staring at the wall. Ready to toss my kindle in the trash.

Bravo.

If you want to go through the whole gamut of emotions, this book is for you as I'm sure the rest of the series will be.

*also, I knew the twist. I tried to deny it and rationalize it. But I knew it.

Thank you to the author Sarah for sending me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Dawn of violent skies is a debut romantasy novel which follows out FMC Solveig, a 400+ year old General of the Southern wilds branch of the Asgardian army. Daughter of the queens of Asgard. But don't be fooled, Solveig is forecky strong, independent and capable, she worked for her post it was not handed to her. Feared by even the fae soldiers for her fighting skills on the battlefield. She is bested only by her best friend and second in line, Gerrie. Another badass FMC who can wield a spear that even our FMC fears.
We see Solveig on a journey of trauma, PTSD, difficult decisions and ultimately betrayal. We follow her through the aftermath of life changing events, trying to refind her purpose and footing within her people.

"I am the daughter of the Queens of Asgard. I bow to no King." I think that quote sums up our FMC Solveig perfectly. I FUCKING LOVE SOLVEIG. I think she may actually be my new favourite FMC. She was fearless, ruthless, yet also kind, caring and full of worry banter and sarcasm. It was a breath of fresh air to follow a female fantasy FMC who was the one leading the battle, the strong character who knew her shit and was being pined after by the male. I ATE THAT UP. Throwing Gerrie into the mix was an added bonus, her matched banter with Solveig and their bond as best friends was beautiful to see play out. And well, Gerrie using the sound stone to mask her bedtime pleasanteries? HILARIOUS.

Lathum, I started of being smitten for him and feeling a little bit sorry for him. Following the events (I don't want to spoil anything!) I ended up loathing him, what a weasley man!

Westely, the elven prince who is a renowned warrior on the battlefield. Well. Who doesn't swoon for a warrior prince? The kinship he built with Solveig, their banter, their journey and progress throughout the story was excellently executed. The slow burn was SLOW. The yearning was HARD. And again, it was a refreshing change of pace. BUT WTF WAS THAT ENDING 😭 I need book two yesterday.

For a first book in what's set to be a trilogy, this was honestly excellent. I couldn't get enough, I absolutely loved the Norse mythology elements, and I'm not someone who's big into history but aside from the name pronunciations (I'm still winging some of the heinms) I was so I trigued by that side of the plot. Overall, I was so engrossed in the characters and this world and I could have thrown my kindle out the window when it ended. The back half of the book, while there were characters I had my suspicions about, I DID NOT expect the plot twists that came. I love feeling suss only to be proved wrong.

Sign me up for book 2 & 3 pronto because I'm chomping at the bit to see how this all plays out. I will definitely be looking to read more of Sara's romance novels after this!

Ok, SO I really struggled with this review. I loved the idea of the book and see all these amazing reviews. This book took me 5 days to read which is a lot longer than most books of this size take me to read. So I am giving this book a 3.5 rating.

So let me talk about some of the things that I really enjoyed with this book. I enjoyed the ending (like last 20%). That is why this got a better rating to be honest from me. There were a couple things I was not expecting. I don't want to give too much away because I don't want to spoil it. There was something that was answered in the end of the book that I suspected because there is mentioned parts early on. I also did enjoy the push pull with certain characters and there were a couple great parts with humor. I loved that.

Ok, so here is where my review went down hill and I didn't grade it as hard as I can because this was an ARC and I know there will be issues. Due to some of the issues with the plot, I had to re-read chapters and areas over to try and get what the author was stating. There are parts that it goes from one scene to the next and I feel it's missing something but then will go back to something else. Some of the things are "there was this" and then when referring to it "it was this". Making some things hard to follow. The worst part was during the cave situation. There was a lot of loop holes/story development/confusion with the flow. I have reached out to see if this was fixed by editing etc but have not heard back. I will be happy to re-evaluate this review if these issues that I had seen get resolved and I would be happy to re-read the book to see if I am still seeing the same issues or not. And before someone comes at me, most of the time, small issues like "left hand/right hand" or miss wording things I am good with but when it affects the flow and causes me to re-read multiple areas to try and get the concept, that is where I struggle.

Overall I liked the story and would love to see what happens in the next book. I do hope that some of the issues that I had with this book (flow) have been fixed for the release. Also I really enjoy our MFC. She is a stabby stabby take charge MFC that I want to see what she does next.

English Below ...

On adore le "he falls first and he falls harder". .

Allez l'ajouter à votre PAL -- Sortie 30 janvier 2026

Merci à Sara Clement de m'avoir permis de lire ce livre en avance en échange d'une critique honnête. Le seul point négatif est que je devrai attendre encore plus longtemps pour lire le tome 2 (juin 2026)

English :
Wow, wow, wow, and WOW again!

The first book since Throne of Glass that actually takes the time to set up the entire world-building. Sara incorporates the Norse mythology into her story beautifully. Nothing is left out, and everything is incredibly well-crafted. Finally, a heroine who isn't 20 years old! Solveigh is an army general that's over 400 years old, and she acts accordingly. Her actions, thoughts, and reactions are based on her past and her experiences. Solveigh's kidnapping and the ensuing torture broke me. I healed slowly alongside Solveigh throughout the story. The healing isn't rushed or an afterthought; it's an integral part of the plot.

I adored Solveigh and Westley. A slow burn that is incredibly SLOW! We love the "he falls first, and he falls harder" dynamic.

Add it to your TBR list -- Release date: January 30, 2026

Thanks to Sara Clement for allowing me to read this book early in exchange for an honest review. The only downside is that I'll have to wait even longer to read volume 2 (June 2026).

I cannot emphasize this enough… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ freaking stars!! Sara Clement, you absolute genius!! This is EASILY one of my top reads of 2025 and I will recommend this to fantasy lovers for years to come!

Dawn of Violent Skies is set in a fantasy world with heavy aspects of Norse mythology. The story follows Solveig, our FMC, who is a highly respected war general that is tasked by the Queens of Asgard to restore magic to the realms while facing a long term war with the mortals. Solveig is caught between her recent traumas and the unlikely alliance of the Fae and a very particular prince.

I’m not going to lie, chapters 1-4 were a little slow for me and it was hard for me to see the direction this story was going. Once I made it through chapter 4, I was completely hooked. Even choosing to abandon all my adult responsibilities to binge this book. Whoops…

If you love a strong, unrelenting, genuine, loyal but soft hearted FMC, Solveig is your girl! Our MMC, Westley, is a complex, flawed but devoted and unwavering prince who is willing to sacrifice his personal needs for his people, much like Solveig is willing to do for her people.

The slow burn between the main characters is completely and utterly unmatched!! The tension??? The yearning??? The longing?? Had me kicking my feet like a love struck teenager. The way the romance aspect was wrote cohesively to flow with the plot and not overshadow it? Phenomenal.

To top it all off the multiple plot twists, secrets and betrayals throughout this book kept me on my toes, page after page. The last 5 chapters had me jaw on the floor with pure shock and don’t even get me started on the cliff hanger ending… WHAT IN THE WORLD!!! I can’t tell you if I’m angry, traumatized, surprised, empowered, devastated or a combination of all the above. All I can say is give me book 2 IMMEDIATELY. Please be June 2026 soon!!!

I have received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This review is completely voluntary and is my own personal thoughts, opinions, and reflection. Huge thank you to Sara Clement for trusting me with reading her baby before it hits the market on January 20th!

ARC review!

Dawn of violent skies by Sara Clement is book 1 of a Norse mythology inspired trilogy.

✅Norse mythology
✅Strong FMC
✅Writing style
✅Character development
✅Yearning
❌ Heavy on some information while lacking on other
❌ A map and a glossary would be nice
❌ Low in action

Should you choose to read it, please check you TW first. There is on page torture, violence, crude language and some graphic scenes of sexual relationship.

Quick summary:
After the war of realms and the death of the gods, the faes and witches have lost their magic. The humans found a way to harness some magic and conflicts between the different groups are constant.

Solveig is the war general of the Asgard army. During a raid on the humans, she gets kidnapped and is kept prisoner for 3 months. During her captivity, she is tortured daily by a fairly sadistic male.
She manages to escape and return home where things have change. Her second in command took her place, but didn't follow the way she handled things.
Solveig is suffering from PTSD and, now, will have to face the faes that the new general have invited to work on a peace agreement. The same faes responsible for her torture.

Opinion:
I enjoyed the book and will read the next for sure.
I thought the pacing was good even if somewhat uneven. I loved the character development and the relationships between them.
I thought it was nice to see her, a veteran war general, be vulnerable and have to work her way back to mental health after what happened to her.

My main complaint would be that it seems to me like you need prior knowledge of the Norse mythology to fully appreciate the story. There is a lot of information there about places and events. I saw there was a map on the author's IG page and I hope it will be included in the book. A glossary would be great too.
I wish there would have been more details on the magic system.

I believe this is the author's debut novel in the romantasy genre, but she wrote a romance trilogy already.

I liked her writing style. I thought it was clear and engaging

If you like Norse mythology and characted development, you might want to give this one a try!
