Spaceship Mechanic #2

Jump Drives and Coffee Stains

Rate this book
In space, the real adventure starts after the warranty expires.

Rix Banner just wants three things out of a working coffeemaker, a ship that doesn’t try to kill him, and maybe—just maybe—a full night of sleep without someone pounding on his hatch asking for “one tiny repair.” Naturally, he gets none of them.

Between duct-taping patched coolant lines, arguing with an ancient navigation computer, and wrangling Patience Station’s maintenance headaches, Rix can barely keep ahead of the chaos. His shop is overflowing with broken photonic barrier generators, impounded cruisers, and a growing list of “favors” he apparently owes half the station.
And that’s before the jobs go sideways.

A routine cargo run turns into a mechanical nightmare involving exploding coffee, structural rot, and a ship held together by sheer stubbornness. Amari’s past keeps knocking on the door—sometimes with warrants—and Kel keeps disappearing on risky deliveries that somehow never go to plan. As trouble mounts, Rix finds himself neck-deep in station politics, pirate fallout, suspicious law enforcement, and a whole lot of equipment that definitely did not come with instructions.

Fast, funny, and fueled by equal parts chaos and caffeine, Jump Drives and Coffee Stains cranks the wrench harder, flies faster, and doubles down on the blue-collar, grease-stained heroics that made Boltguns and Duct Tape an instant favorite.

Less plot more mechanical know how

I will start by saying I really enjoyed the first book, and was looking forward to the second one. Sadly, I found myself a bit disappointed. While Banner continues to be a great character, and finds ways to cleverly use his knowledge to adapt to life on a space station, this book felt oddly disjointed. There wasn’t as much clear plot- it was more meandering. Some relationships developed, but our most important one- with Kel- was off screen for a decent chunk of the book. The last third in particular felt like a lot of technical descriptions on fixes and not a whole lot of the story moving forward. I really like this author, so I’m hopeful for the next one

As Good as Book 1

The second book in this series builds on Rix’s adventures. It manages to maintain the mix of a mechanical seriousness, adventure, and romance that made Book 1 very enjoyable. Rix is trying to settle into station life while dealing with pirates, seemingly incompetent politicians, and meeting Kel’s sister. Rix remains down to earth with a focus on fixing things while making it right for everyone involved. I’m looking forward to Book 3.

Wonderful story. Through book 2, this sci-fi series focuses mainly on the people involved and their daily life and adventures on the asteroid. There are far fewer space battles than in most space sci-fi adventures. But the story attracts you to the characters, leading you to eagerly read more to learn how they overcome their numerous challenges. I don't know how the saga will continue to evolve, but look forward to book 3 for sure!

This series is surprising me. The covers caught my eye. I wasn't too certain that the story would be to my taste. I have to admit that I am really enjoying the notion of a small-town mechanic taking to the stars and fixing starships with duct tape. Red Green meets Flash Gordon. Looking forward to the next book.

Under promise and over deliver

Great change of pace from a litrpg and slice of life. Took skill to weave sexual tension into a mechanics surprise trip into space on a broken space ship. Also good job with plot twists that were not signaled in the first book. Will come back for the third.

This is a great series!

I am already excited for the 3rd book. The characters are fun and the pace is fast. I love that there is action but the hero is a mechanic not am action hero. The Easter eggs to the authors other books are also a blast.

Great Fun!!

I enjoy authors that have characters actually Build something, Without crashes and feats of daring. This novel series offers that plus good humor. I recommend this book and the whole series.

splendid second book

As the story progresses, the life on a backwater space station becomes more complex, as do the connections of the principal characters.
This series is what started me on Jamie McFarlane, I am now thoroughly hooked.
Highly recommend…

Great followup.....

The teasing of the ending to book 1, left me wanting more. This carries you on an adventure as the characters face new challenges of new enemies, and new friends. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Book 2 in the series

Rix, Kel, and Philo are on a freight run in Calypso when they are attacked by pirates and the ship is damaged. They are able to return to Patience Station but now the pirates are after them. A great story.

Excellent series, I'm just upset that I have to wait.

Excellent series so far. Love the fact that he understands how things work, and how to fix them. Same for my entire printer and network career.

enjoyable read

Had a few parts that were a bit tedious, which I skimmed. Overall, it has been a fun read, not too cerebral, which is fine by me.
