The complete edition of Slices of Life: A Comic Montage; a masterful collection of comics of universal scenarios that examine the small moments in life, reveling in all it’s quiet beauty. Originally created as Qu's thesis project for her MFA in Illustration Practice at MICA, it's a joy to be bringing this collection of insightful and subtly magnificent silent comics to English readers, as it has only been published in China. This edition of Slices of Life includes process backmatter originally from Qu’s making-of zine.
This is a beautiful little book and timely, too. Every day it feels like the world is getting shittier and people are getting more selfish and disconnected from one another but here comes Qu's "Slices Of Life: A Comic Montage," which celebrates the small moments that unite us all and make us feel like things aren't so bad. Some of these pieces are grounded in reality (a dog laying in the sun, taking one's clothes off at the end of the day, accidentally using facial cleanser instead of toothpaste when brushing your teeth, etc.) while some of them are much more surreal (using stars to light a reading lamp, boating on the grooves of a record, eating clouds, etc.). They're all illustrated in Qu's deceptively simple but profound style and colored with all the vibrant shades of the rainbow. It's the kind of comic that feeds your soul and we need that kind of art more than ever lately.
My Kickstarter pledge of 2025. 5 stars for a beautifully evocative and sincere work, and especially for the sweet and honest behind the scenes. Super inspiring stuff for an aspiring artist!
