Alchemy of Desire #2

Charming the Rogue

Rate this book
The perfect Alchemist’s daughter.

Sybil Grant wants the one thing she can’t have—to be an alchemist. Even though women are barred from working in the forge, she’s developed her skills quietly, secretly. But it’s not enough. To give her inventions life, she needs the kind of knowledge only gained through an apprenticeship, something she’ll never have. Unless she can convince a fascinating man born to break rules to share a few fire-side secrets.

The fallen transcendent rogue.

Mr. Apollo Chester (only mister, unfortunately) is London’s bad boy, a fallen angel without a soul. He’s lost everything—title, money, magic—and he wants it back. He’ll do anything to get it, even become an apprentice to the Alchemist Guild’s dubious master. Even follow the beguiling, feisty woman he wronged into the wilds of Yorkshire.

An unlikely partnership turns to passion.

She has the innate talent he needs. He has the apprenticeship knowledge she craves. And when an abduction and an alchemist myth bind them, they must rely on each other to forge their futures. They can teach each other how to handle the heat of metal, but can they teach their hearts to embrace the unexpected perils of love?

A divided society will keep them apart, unless they can forge a new world in the heat of love. Together.

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I am absolutely loving this new series—a regency romance spiked with the supernatural. After the first book, I never imagined Apollo could redeem himself. In fact, when this story starts, I’m still having trouble seeing him as a sympathetic character. He’s self-centered, focused on wealth and moving up in the hierarchy of his new position in society, and cowardly. Diana, his cousin whom he terrorized in the first book, has forgiven him, but he hasn’t forgiven himself. Having lost his title and ability to cast glamours, he is now focused on becoming an alchemist. But he’s not particularly good at it.

He stumbles upon Sybil Grant, the sister of Temple Grant, Diana’s new husband, as she’s being carted off to a dungeon by Apollo’s boss. Curious, he eavesdrops and finds out that his boss has imprisoned Sybil so she will solve an alchemical puzzle for him—how to turn lead into gold. After his boss leaves, Apollo reveals himself to Sybil, but he does not rescue her, unwilling to jeopardize his own career. He goes home to his pathetic one-room lodging and tries to forget his cowardice. "Perhaps it would be best if Apollo simply…waited it out. He rolled to his back, closed his eyes, and crossed his arms over his chest like one of the desiccated mummies on show in the museum above—cursed, rotting, his heart removed, forgotten, and sealed in a jar.”

Though Apollo is loath to admit he has a conscience, he finds himself drawn back to Sybil in the cage where she’s been locked. When he doesn’t immediately help her, she accuses him of coming to gloat. His response made me laugh: “I barely know who you are, sweetheart. I’m not about to waste a good gloat on you.”

Shortly thereafter, Apollo visits his mother, and I loved this description: “His mother pulled herself up tall. If she’d been a chick, her feathers would have ruffled with pride. If Apollo were a chicken—and he most likely was—his feathers would have ruffled, too.”

He goes back to Sybil again, and she tries to negotiate his help. He’s villainous in his response, dedicated to his persona of a cold, calculating, self-serving jerk. But he’s funny too, almost as if he knows it’s an act. In frustration, Sybil exclaims: “Am I truly to be rescued by a moron?” And his response is priceless: “Not with that attitude, you’re not.”

At one point, Sybil is hurt, and Apollo is frantic with the desire to ensure she’s okay. “Apollo’s heart had turned into a wolf, howling and snarling with nowhere to run.” Clearly, he’s developed feelings for Sybil, and he’s begun to care for her safety and well-being even more than his own, a truly odd sensation for him. He rushes Sybil to the doctor and storms in, only to find the doctor is already treating a patient. I love this description of the occupants of the room. The doctor “was tall and gray-haired with a grizzly gray beard. He was treating a little girl whose nose seemed to be made entirely of snot and the little girl’s mother, whose mouth was shaped by a yawn.”

As Apollo allows himself to be the caring human he once was, before he became jaded by life and succumbed to the belief that everyone owed him something, he starts to see the person he was hiding all along. He admits that he loves Sybil. “It felt like every glamour that had ever ruled his life had been ripped away, revealing not an ugly world worth hiding, but a miraculous one. The sin had been in hiding it.”

Apollo’s proposal to Sybil is graceless and underwhelming. Her response is wonderful: “I think I’m going to marry you, but it’s despite a concerning lack of verbal clarity.”

More than anything, the theme of this story seems to be the power of finding someone who believes in you who can help you fulfill all of your dreams. Sybil dreams of being an alchemist, just like the men in her family, but she hides her desires because she’s a woman and she won’t be permitted to do so. Apollo teaches her that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks; he believes in her. Meanwhile, Apollo believes he’s a worthless, selfish degenerate with no positive attributes. Sybil sees through that and encourages him to be something better than he ever imagined he could be. The two of them grow immensely as a result of their relationship. But the true wonder of this story is how Charlie Lane takes a thoroughly despicable man and turns him into something amazing. The journey, while it has ups and downs and plenty of danger, is also quite humorous and so, so enjoyable.

Spellbinding, mesmerising and fairytastic, this story devoured me! I tried to put it down, failed miserably, and don’t regret it one bit!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

First of all I would recommend reading Binding the Baron first. For one it’s gorgeous, but most of all, Apollo’s tragically entertaining fall from grace is not to be missed – and you’ll get so much more satisfaction out of his redemption arc in this one.
Trust me on this.

Now, this story: little miss perfect eldest daughter sneaking around to become a self-taught alchemist gets kidnapped, locked in a dungeon, rescued and shipped off to the country by her overbearing big brother.
Strangely enough it’s our former privileged arse turned opportunistic loser doing the rescuing after he tried to 💀 her in the previous book. He’s still a leopard, and so he accepts the part of double spy, weaseling his way into her forced rustication.
Why? Because with her talent and his knowledge, he might finally rise again.
No title, no money, no soul, but his selfishness remains... or is this about more?

A road trip, sheep vs a locked gate, motivational sizzle, bath boiling, unintentional bloodletting, alchemy lessons, notebook deciphering, an extraordinary green thumb, the forge of her dreams and scorching experiments – in every way that comes to mind 😉 – until reality comes calling, and their bubble bursts.
Their relationship is a fascinating emotional battlefield; from enemies to allies to lovers, she grows and he transforms. Brilliantly witty, utterly delectable, exquisite chemistry combined with magic, craftsmanship, thrill and looming doom... because the real villain won’t quit, and Apollo is the caring kind of fool.
He’s Sybil’s rock, even if neither cares to admit it, and he knows his grovelling! I adored his struggle to disprove he’s really a closeted cinnamon roll instead of a jerk. That whole grandma thing... just 🥹💗🌿

So far, this series is a ride! Women successfully fighting to defy the patriarchy is inspiring, and their flawed men holding the fort are the cherry on top. I love the vibes, the flow, the intrigue, and the joy these tales bring, and I can barely wait to dive into the next one!

Charlie Lane’s Charming the Rogue, the second book in the Alchemy of Desire series, is a dazzling blend of historical romance, fantasy, and a touch of magic that completely swept me away. Lane has an extraordinary gift for spinning enchanting worlds where magic and passion are seamlessly intertwined, and this book shows her talent at its very best.

We first met Apollo Chester in the previous book, and if I’m honest, he was downright unlikeable. Yet somehow, Lane performs storytelling alchemy of her own, turning a fallen rogue into a hero you can’t help but root for. Apollo has lost everything—his title, his estate, his magic, and his fortune. Desperate to reclaim what he’s lost, he becomes an apprentice to the shady master of the Alchemist Guild. Enter Sybil Grant, a brilliant and determined woman whose dream is to master alchemy, even though society forbids her to do so. Secretly pursuing her passion, Sybil collides once more with Apollo, and sparks—both literal and romantic—fly.

Their first encounter ends with Apollo rescuing her from his unscrupulous boss, forming an uneasy alliance that slowly transforms into sizzling chemistry. The enemies-to-reluctant-allies-to-lovers arc is absolutely delicious, and Lane crafts their journey with wit, tension, and heart. The banter is sharp, the slow-burn passion is intoxicating, and the magical world is as vivid as ever.

Charming the Rogue is a captivating tale of redemption, ambition, and unexpected love, full of adventure and enchantment. Charlie Lane’s storytelling is pure magic—she forges love and wonder with every page, leaving readers utterly spellbound. A must-read for anyone who adores historical fantasy romance with heart, heat, and a touch of alchemical sparkle.

I received an ARC (advanced review copy) for free and am sharing my thoughts voluntarily.

Vibe - Last book he tried to kill her, this time he built her a forge. I absolutely love these two, especially how supportive Apollo is of Sybil wanting to be an alchemist (something women are not allowed to study). And, plant dad.

I absolutely devoured this enemies to reluctant allies to lovers book! Apollo and Sybil have such great chemistry together and Apollo is a very morally grey hero. Last book we saw him try to kill both his cousin and Sybil but even by the end of the book it was clear he was ready to start a redemption arc (well, perhaps sink a little lower, but the redemption arc was still coming!). I really enjoyed Binding the Baron, but I absolutely loved Charming the Rogue.

One of the elements I really love about Charming the Rogue and Binding the Baron is how well balanced the books feel between fantasy and historical romance. I really want to continue exploring this world and see more of how magic works. A lot of the core of the magic discovery in both books is that magic has been limited to only men and those men have assumed that they are utilizing magic and alchemy in the “best” way, without any consideration that perhaps there is so much more to learn. Both our heroines push back against those ideas and will easily become more powerful than their male counterparts. Charming the Rogue also gave us Apollo exploring plant magic, something that has been relegated to unimportant women work, but of course also has the potential for so much more.

Thanks to the author for the ARC.

I wasn't sure how the author was going to do cause when I saw Apollo was the lead of the second book, I just didn't understand how he came back from the events of the first book so this was a must read. The alchemist are just so hot, the act of making something out of that metal really lends itself to a romance story based on the lore here. Again, its really easy to understand and doesn't make it difficult to follow along. Sybil wants a lot in life. Her top three things (according to me) not be in hiding, get to work with metal, and have her brother believe in her the way he does his wife. Apollo starts this book in a slightly better state than the end of the last book but not much. He lacks self reflection and he still feels like he is owed something because he was born with a title and is a man.

The bedroom sport was great and I liked their journey together. Its not grumpy/ sunshine, I would say grumpy man and headstrong woman. It was really great to see how supportive they became of each other, really helping the other with things they were good at and actively helping the other bring out the best in them. I am looking forward to more in this series.

I fall more in love with gas lamp romance with each of Charlie Lane’s words. She has masterfully blended the elated feelings of romance with the wonder of magic. Apollo had a long road to walk to be redeemed but I appreciated his journey and his self-exploration. This was not an easy journey but I think Diana had it right in that there were different Apollo’s and as each grew the Apollo before faded away. This new Apollo is a man of great emotion, a man searching for his place and he finds that in Sybil. Sybil is truly a blend of subservient woman, the commanding general and a woman of pure emotion. I loved seeing her step out of the shadows, she truly embraced the light and let herself shine. This is full of delicious tempestuous banter and unrivalled chemistry and passion. Truly, the passion is at the heart of this story and it seeps into every aspect. My emotions hit every pinnacle and kept right on growing. Every word makes me beg for more. This world has captured my entire heart and I can’t wait for more.

I typically don’t read this type of romance, but I love Charlie Lane’s books so I decided to give it a try. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed it and it did not disappoint!! I thought the book was well written, very engaging and full of entertainment. I actually didn’t read book one in the series, but I did not feel lost and was able to follow the characters without difficulty. I will be going to back and reading book one just so I can read the back story of Sybil and Apollo. I did find both Sybil and Apollo very likable characters and they were both well developed. I also enjoyed the bonus epilogue at the end which is like a stepping stone to the next book which I am looking forward to reading. I highly recommend this book!!

Note: I did NOT receive a ARC from the author I read it on KU when it was released 😅 Thanks GR for being misleading!

3.5 stars

I definitely liked it more than the first book because I think Apollo was more interesting as a MMC than Temple. But still the story was too boring for me, a bit too cozy and without any real highlights. Yes, I need a bit more angst and drama (not too much but more than nothing). Additionally I didn't feel any historical atmosphere at all. Were are the balls? The historical references? This felt so bland in that area. The fantasy aspect was fine but nothing more but the story didn't deliver on the historical aspect.

What was going on with Temple!? He was so open-minded in the first book about a woman having powers and now? With Sybil? He was stubborn and just an idiot with violence problems? I didn't like him at all. Apollo's definitively the better MMC.

This series has made me a romantasy fan!! The world that Charlie Lane has created through the first two books and two prequels is interesting and fun, and the characters are delightful. We first met the awful villain Apollo in Binding the Baron and his character arc is 180 degrees and I'm here for it! There's so much to like here. Sybil is strong and feisty and cuts Apollo no slack. It's worth the ride as he saves her from a kidnapping, they go on a road trip, and save sheep. IYKYK Alchemist, near-transcendent or plant dad, their chemistry is sizzling. I can't wait for the next in the series!

Charming the Rogue is a captivating blend of romance, adventure, and magical intrigue. Sybil Grant’s determination to master alchemy clashes perfectly with the roguish charm of Apollo Chester, creating an electrifying dynamic. With a richly imagined world, witty banter, and a slow-burning romance, this story forges passion and partnership in equal measure. A delightful read for fans of historical fantasy romance.

If you love to read about experiments, a heroine trying to save herself, a redeemed hero, and magic this is a great book. Sybil and Apollo are a great couple. They start off as enemies but after some drama and learning about themselves they become lovers. There are so many twists and excitement throughout the book. I enjoyed seeing characters pop up from the previous book. I look forward to seeing what comes next.

I am finding these stories in Alchemy just fascinating! Charlie Lane’s writing is pure magic and that’s reflected in her wonderful characters. Who doesn’t love a strong, feisty heroine and Sybil is certainly that! She wants so much to be an Alchemist, but that’s not open for a woman. Although Apollo and Sybil start off as enemies, they progress to allies, and then in no time they're sizzling, hot as the forge!. The dialogue in this story is excellent and the characters, pure delight!

I devoured this book in two evenings! It is a perfect mixture of historical romance and cozy fantasy.

At the beginning, I was sceptical about Apollo‘s redemption arc, but it didn’t take long to accept him as he is and give him a chance of finding himself.

Sybil was such a darling, such a loveable character.

The story is very rich, and there are so many interesting characters.

And that epilogue?? I want the third book ASAP!!

Apollo saves Sybil from a dungeon after being kidnapped for her special skills. Even though Apollo once threatened Sybil's life she has no choice but to work with him. A love is forged by fire but torn apart by circumstance. Apollo and Sybil are a force together but lost when apart. Apollo needs to make the first step for reconciliation.

These two characters have been seen in an other book in the series. The MMC is on the road to redemption. The FMC is trying to gain knowledge, something that is frowned upon. This story has adventure, romance, and magic and the author blends the three things nicely. I enjoyed the read.

Loved it, each had something the other need in a world of alchemy and magic. Sybil wants to be an alchemist and Apollo is an apprentice in alchemy, she has an innate talent that he needs. Can they forge a world where they can co-exist in a world which would tear them apart.

This is interesting with an anti hero and an fmc interested in engineering and alchemy. I loved how they grew together and seeing the other side of the mmc.
