David and Cheryl Monahan live in a small town in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire and a remote fishing village on the western tip of the island of Curaçao.
I stopped at a small store while driving through Bethlehem in New Hampshire, and inside was a small display shelf with some books by local authors D. and C. Monahan. I picked up a book up simply with the intent of lending support to a local independent author. I’m glad I did, because Cold Days turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining read indeed. I struggled a bit at the beginning, as I tried to make sense of which characters were which and what the book’s direction was, but in time my patience was rewarded with a story that moved with good pace, featured interesting characters, had enough mystery to keep the reader intrigued, and built nicely toward an exciting climax. It was also, at times, quite poignant. David and Cheryl Monahan write clear, crisp prose, and their descriptions of winter in small town New Hampshire could only have been written by people who live, work, and play there.
