I’ve just finished the ARC of “Battle Beyond the Veil” by Cassie Sanchez, her new Urban Fantasy. You are in for a real treat, this is an epic read. l absolutely loved it.

Cassie’s writing is modern, exciting and sharp. The plot is first-rate, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Angels, Demons and Princes of Hell all fighting to get their hands on a magical ancient cursed artefact the Atar’zul crown.

When famous archaeologist Dr Hugh Neeman and the Atar’zul crown he found on his recent dig vanishes, Kyden a powerful angel warrior and demon slayer is tasked to find him and recover the crown.

Kyden is also tasked to protect Zahra, Dr Neeman’s daughter, a curator at Boston’s Gallery of Time Museum. The museum are expecting Dr Neeman to deliver the crown when he attends the gala they are hosting as their guest of honour.

I was completely hooked from the very start. The history and mythology of the famous Atar’zul crown was fascinating…I absolutely loved the Lucifer, Indiana Jones with a splash of Crescent City vibe, this was Urban Fantasy at its very best.

It has a great balance of good/evil characters, full of action and interesting twists…not once did it drag.
This storyline is exciting and thoroughly entertaining and Cassie has proved once again that she can write a great battle scene. There is so much to enjoy…the war between heaven and hell to get their hands on the Atar’zul was right up my alley. I highly recommend this book.

This urban fantasy is well written and filled with action. The plot and the worldbuilding are great, and reading it was enjoyable.
The reason why Zahra and Jake split up felt..... idn..... constructed? I didn't really believe in it and I honestly didn't quite believe in their romance either. Maybe because I wished she would end up with Kyden instead. There is surely a way for a human and an angel to be together.
But the banter between Zahra and Kyden was nevertheless at times hilarious, and I enjoyed the book very much.

Battle Beyond the Veil is a paranormal fantasy treasure with a cinematic flair that had me hooked!

Fans of The Mummy and Constantine take note!

Seriously - historical artifacts of prophetic significance, angels and demons battling among us, and flawed characters with enough inner fuel to change the world. Check, check, and check.

Epic.
Highly entertaining.

Sanchez does a superb job of using biblical history as a foundation for a gritty jaw-dropping magical world.

The FMC, Zahra, is an authentic blend of kickass modern-day magical female with relatable vices and insecurities.

There are two main male characters which kept me guessing at who to trust and who to root for. Love triangles aren’t usually my preference but this one hit different. There’s a harmony that picks up in the latter chapters and I look forward to seeing and feeling more from these characters.

Especially Kyden. Now here is a mouthwateringly hot and complex character.
Plus, absolutely loved his appreciation for 80's nostalgia.

I was riveted with the ending and hungry for more. Can’t wait for the next installment!

This was a highly entertaining book that kept me on the edge of my seat! Cassie Sanchez certainly knows how to write a battle scene that has your heart in your mouth! The world building was excellent with a powerful magical relic, the Atar'zul crown going missing as does the famous archaeologist Dr Hugh Neeman who discovered it at his dig. A powerful warrior angel Kyden is sent to hunt and retrieve it to prevent it getting into the hands of the Princes of Hell. Kyden also meets up with Zahra Jenkins, the curator at Boston's Gallery of Time Museum who unbeknownst to everyone is really Dr Hugh Neeman's daughter. What follows is an exciting hunt for the relic involving Kyden, Titus another angel, and Jake an ex boyfriend of Zahra's.
I loved Kyden's appreciation for eighties music! I too love that time. The banter between him and Zahra had me chuckling. I wasn't so keen on Jake at the beginning but he came good in the end. I've left off a star as I did think the chemistry between Jake and Zahra was a little bland. It didn't give me goosebumps while Kyden was everything you could wish for in a badass, sexy MMC. I do hope he appears in any further books in this series as the ending was open to maybe a continuation? Highly recommend this book.

I thought this story was a riot. Yes its full of drama, danger, battles, and a hidden war. But the characters are a hoot and I loved them. Gotta feel for the stress Zahra has as the story begins and everything gets crazy. And I loved Kyden. And when these two start interacting it had me laughing. Then these two must work together and Zahra learned things made the story even more fun to read. I enjoy the story, characters and the issues at hand.

I'm super picky about Urban Fantasy, and this story was everything I look for in the genre. Sanchez's characters and dialogue feel real and relatable, and the spiritual realm worldbuilding in this one was solid!

The MMC Kyden brings the Demon Slayer vibes, and it's extra fun that he masquerades as human, and often reverts back into his angelic form as the need arises. His arc is fully fleshed as a warrior angel of Elohim who doesn't understand the grace that God extends to humans, kind of despising humans. He was once assigned to protect a human and lost her to the forces of darkness, and fears failing again.

The FMC, Zahra is juggling her single mother's end of life care and trying to win an advancement as Head Curator of the museum. She's also run from fears when she denied her old flame Jake and ran off with the engagement ring. Her advancement hinges upon her archaeologist father delivering a "cursed" Babylonian crown to her Babylon exhibit in time for the Gala, and winning the favor of the wealthiest sponsors of the exhibit.
And when the stunningly handsome, and preciously protective Jake shows up at the Gala, Zahra gets the mysterious, and also stunningly handsome stranger "Sam" to pretend to be her boyfriend.

Both man and warrior angel get caught up in protecting Zahra as everything in her world goes sideways. And a supernatural item soon allows Zahra to see the spiritual world around her.

BBtV has great stakes and action, a bit of steam, and deals beautifully with temptation, fear, and trust. Zahra and Jake's second chance romance is a beautiful thread throughout, and all the characters are loveable and likeable. Even the demon characters are wonderfully detestable.

This was another home run from Sanchez! I enjoyed the portrayal of the archangels and the princes of hell as their power and presence on page was so easy to sense through the narrative and dialogue.

Angels and demons battling it out is nothing new, what is new, is how inventive this author was in her telling, her concept. A new to me author, I had no idea what to expect, and I was drawn in from the first few paragraphs. Unexpectedly. What too was unexpected, was the grittiness of this read, the sweeping epic tale that spans across different realms. The originality was evident immediately, the clear, precise introduction of the war waged between angels and fallen angels, vivid, easy to follow and the prophecy is a cool variation of the norm. Ms Sanchez meticulously builds an image where it's hard to look away from, a world, modern in every aspect, where ancients walk amongst the mortal. Where a missing artifact, a halo named Atar’zul, is on everyone's wishlist and the battle to find it, is paramount to the balance of the realms. Once there were the Vaelatori, guardians to maintain this balance, chosen to carry a talisman to see beyond the veil, to protect the legend of the Atar’zul and the prophecy tied to it. No one knows how many or where they are or even if they exist any longer. The Princes of hell, the archangels, the warriors on both sides, fight it out once more, with Zahra caught up like a fish in a net.

Zarah, an assistant curator for a museum, fearful of commitment, she ran away from the love of her life and poured her heart into work, desperately wanting the top job, desperately working towards achieving her goal. Both her job... challenges... in the form of sleezeball Brandon and her ex's reappearance, PLUS a suave hunk called Sam Malone (yes... named after Sam Malone from Cheers...) throw her off course. I loved her character, with her lolly popping addiction, the hurt by the desertion of her father, the love and caring for her ill mother, described an intelligent, ambitious and all round resilient. It also showcased her vulnerability. She soon discovers there ARE things that go bump in the night, there ARE real angels and there are demons too. Quite the mind spin! As first Sam, aka Jayden enters her life, and then Jake re-enters it, she exposed to it all. Seeing her navigate the "new" world, seeing her hardassery surface, watching her grow into her new awareness, was truly thrilling.

The banter, was absolutely delightful and comical, evoking snorts or the more ladylike, spurts, of laughter. No, definitely snorts... I was hard pressed to wipe the perpetual smile from my face, heck, just the restaurant scenes alone, with Jake and 'Sam', priceless! The author's progressive world building, plot and pacing captivated me, one minute it's lighthearted, the next so thick with tension, it was wadding through molasses. I was alternating between smiling and clenching the book. The twists and revelations started hit from about the 25% mark and heck, it felt like a piano had dropped onto my head each time! But it was the bombshell by Zahra's father that made me tear up. When the identity of the illusive Shane is revealed, my jaw landed on the floor with a loud thump! The little clues casually dropped, just made my brain frizzle with anticipation and all sorts of theories, who was who, what was what, who was concealing what, hell, immaculate penmanship! Add to that, I'm officially in love with Jake!

OMG! He is the perfect specimen of a real man! Kind, gentle, considerate, respectful, and soooo in love with Zhara,(still!) 4 years after shattering his heart. Oh and he's gorgeous too! Another gorgeous hunk was introduced right at the beginning, Kayden. An angel. Kayden is more complex than a Rubik cube, he's so layered, so intense, ultra protective, and, at the same time so deeply insecure. He was once a protector, until that particular event went belly up, now he's a Slayer, dedicated to fighting demons, especially those targeting humans. But here's the thing, he doesn't actually like humans, he thinks they're fickle, easily swayed and manipulated, so when he's tasked, once more as a protector of Zahra, he's less than thrilled. He's even less thrilled with the emotions Zahra is waking up in him, after said emotions were shoved so deep, they ceased to exist. Or have they? Glory did I love his thoughts and reactions to Zahra, which only compounded this..."he was spiraling into a bottomless pit of doubt and rage."

Whoa! Hells bells and angel wings, those fight scenes, notably towards the end, were action to the nth degree! These battle scenes are incredibly scintillatingly memorable. Blow for blow, swipe for swipe, some of the most scintillating I've ever read. No, really dazzling, as in scary as heck, as in wrapping around my heart and squeezing, hard! What this author did, was superbly craft it so I was agog not knowing which way the battles world go. With pounding heart, I was captured, captivated and, in all honesty, I couldn't put it down. This is one of those reads that the more I read, the more I'm sunk into the book, the characters, and heck, by the end, I wanted to cry that there wasn't more! My mortal soul is completely invested in these characters, it surpasses a need, a want, I HAVE to know what happens next!

Battle Beyond the Veil is an urban fantasy romance that follows Kyden, a battle-weary angel who hunts demons, and Zahra, a museum curator in Boston whose life is built around ancient artifacts, a sick mother, and a pile of color-coded to-do lists. When Zahra’s famous archaeologist father disappears during a dig in Iraq, and a legendary halo called the Atar’zul goes missing, their worlds collide. The missing relic draws demons, angels, and humans into the same storm, and Zahra learns she is Vaelatori, one of the rare humans who can see beyond the veil and is tied to a prophecy about the halo. The book moves between dusty ruins in Babylon, the polished glass cases of a museum, and the unseen spiritual war that rages around them.

What pulled me in first was Zahra herself. She is capable and driven, but she is also tired, snappy in all the right ways, and constantly chewing on Dum-Dums to keep from slipping back into cigarettes. Her stress about the gala, her rage when a coworker quietly takes credit for her work, and the raw ache around her mom’s dementia feel very human. At the same time, you have Kyden on the other side, an immortal who kills demons for a living and drinks way too much coffee, rolling his eyes at humans while still crossing continents to protect them. I liked how the author lets their paths intersect in messy, awkward ways. Zahra literally slams into him at the museum, spills champagne down his front, and then later has to deal with the fact that the hot donor is actually her angelic bodyguard. The romantic beats are there, but the story does not rush into some instant, swoony bond. Instead, it leans into trust, annoyance, and slow respect, which works well for this genre.

On the worldbuilding side, the book feels like a blend of action fantasy and spiritual warfare, with some clear Christian influence but more focus on story than sermon. Angels and demons are not vague forces; they have ranks, rules, and politics. Apollyon leads seven princes of hell tied to the classic deadly sins, each with their own territories. We see grunts whispering in human ears at traffic jams and fancy galas, shifting moods and nudging bad choices rather than throwing fireballs. That small detail, the quiet influence, made the unseen war feel more grounded. I also appreciated the author’s choice to complicate the love angle. The obvious route in an urban fantasy romance would be “girl falls in love with broody angel.” Here, Zahra has a very real, painful history with her ex Jake, and her arc is less about “picking the hottest supernatural guy” and more about figuring out what kind of love and life she actually wants while carrying grief, betrayal, and responsibility. By the end, her connection to Kyden looks more like a sacred partnership born out of the prophecy and shared battles, while her romantic future with Jake feels surprisingly gentle and earned.

By the time I reached the last pages, I felt like the book had threaded its main promise: big supernatural stakes wrapped around a very personal story. The halo is found and fought over, secrets about Zahra’s father and mother click into place, and Zahra steps fully into her role as Vaelatori without losing sight of her normal life as a curator who still has to show up for work. Battle Beyond the Veil will land best with readers who enjoy urban fantasy romance that mixes angels, demons, and prophecies with real-world problems like caregiving, career pressure, and complicated family ties. If you like a story where the spiritual and the everyday sit at the same table, where the action has heart, and the romance is threaded with responsibility and faith, this one is worth picking up.

Magic, Action-Filled, Romance, loveable characters, and originality in plot! It’s simply Heavenly!
Congratulations to Cassie Sanchez, my writing mentor, and the author of The Darkness Trilogy on her new book, Battle Beyond the Veil. I had the privilege of reading an ARC of the book, which will be released officially on April 14th, 2026, and what an honor it was. I knew Cassie Sanchez wouldn’t let me down and boy was I more than right. It was even better than I expected.

As much as I love The Darkness Trilogy, Battle Beyond the Veil is my favorite of the author’s books. There is something so special about it. The originality in worldbuilding, characters, were all spot on with what makes a best seller. Cassie’s writing style is much different and stronger compared to her other books, and I immediately was drawn in. In her writing, she doesn’t give long lectures in narrative, nor does she bore with pages of exposition. Cassie shows the action in her writing and gets directly to the point of the story and whatever background information she needs to convey to the reader is done without lagging. You know the characters right away.

However, not giving away spoilers, but there are many unexpected twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I fell in love with her main protagonists Zahra, with whom I feel like I can relate to and Kyden. Also, I adore Titus, Jake, and Gael. You’re just charmed by the characters and fascinated by worlds that Cassie has created. It’s a beautiful tale of Good versus Evil. Battle Beyond the Veil feels like a nice adventure for readers of the Percy Jackson books, but with a more mature tone.
Battle Beyond the Veil is a fun and exciting book to read on a cozy day that will bring you to tears and smiles. There is a shining halo hovering above it.

Cassie Sanchez is such a great writer that I’m so jealous and I just hate her for it. It is a truly wonderful book that anyone will enjoy, and I am looking forward to perhaps a sequel?
Congrats Cassie!

ARC REVIEW

At first, the story feels promising: a quest for a lost and powerful artifact that could tip the balance in a conflict between angels and demons, all set in a modern urban world. However, despite an intriguing premise, several issues brought my rating down to 3 out of 5 stars.

First, the heavy use of flashbacks and inner monologue in the first 50 pages made it difficult to stay engaged. Don’t get me wrong—developing characters and world-building is important, but there are more dynamic ways to do it. Here, the author relies too much on flashbacks instead of letting scenes unfold naturally (for example, when the FMC reflects on visiting her ill mother), and often uses internal thoughts instead of meaningful dialogue to explain backstory or the rules of the world. There’s also a lot of information that feels random or irrelevant at the time it’s introduced (like the MMC casually noting that demons can travel faster now that planes exist), and some of these details are repeated later on. In a relatively short book (315 pages), I would have appreciated a bit more trust in the reader to remember key details, or simply introducing them when they actually matter.

Second, the romance really fell flat for me. The FMC has two potential love interests: the kind and charming ex-boyfriend, and the powerful, attractive angel—but I didn’t find myself rooting for either of them. There was no real sense of longing or emotional depth, just physical attraction. As a result, the relationships felt underdeveloped and, ultimately, uninteresting.

So, did I finish the book? Yes—the plot was still intriguing enough to keep me going. Did I enjoy it? It was fine. Not bad, but not particularly memorable either. Will I pick up another book set in this world? Probably not. My TBR is already long enough, and this one didn’t quite stand out.

rollicking great ride

The novel becomes a storm of action very quickly. Zahra Jenkins is a museum curator who is responsible for an exhibit featuring a mysterious relic. The relic turns up missing as does her father. Then, her co-worker and nemesis is found tortured to death. But, the most interesting part of the entire affair is the character of Sam Malone, AKA Kyden, a warrior angel. Yes, he is an honest to God demon slaying, ass-whupping warrior angel with a taste for donuts.

Soon, Zahra becomes embroiled in a supernatural battle between the forces of good and evil. Demons lurk around each corner, trying to destroy Zahra and anyone who helps her.

Meanwhile, she battles conflict of her own as her loving ex-boyfriend steps back in, her mother seems to be getting progressively sicker and her co-worker’s death leaves her worried.

She wrote from the angel’s point of view quite well. As a devoted Catholic, I found nothing in the book that conflicted with my sensibilities. I do warn that the novel contained references to sexual situations, alcohol use and suicide. It is meant for mature audiences and for people not easily triggered by depictions of violence.

She created a whole mythos for the angels and did not delve too deeply into theological matters. Clearly, she wasn't writing a catechism but a book of fiction.

The story was enjoyable and full of exciting fight scenes told with precision and imagination. Sanchez depicts the angels in awesome celestial garb, flying across oceans with silver wings and golden armor. Yet, she balances this with humorous dialogue and clever characterization.

Definite recommend.

Book Review: Battle Beyond the Veil by Cassie Sanchez
Battle Beyond the Veil was a captivating read that drew me in from the very first page. The prologue hooked me, setting the stage for an engaging adventure that only continued to build momentum throughout the story. The plot, while straightforward, was compelling enough to keep me invested in the characters and their journeys.
The main characters, Kyden and Zahra, provided a dynamic contrast. Initially, I found Zahra somewhat annoying; her immaturity and seemingly unprofessional demeanor as a museum curator were off-putting. However, this initial impression served a purpose, as the story showcases her transformation. Witnessing her growth was one of the highlights of the book.
Kyden, the warrior angel, was a character I immediately connected with. From Chapter One, he was portrayed with depth and clarity, making it easy to root for him as he faced the challenges ahead. The chemistry between Kyden and Zahra, along with their individual struggles, made for an interesting journey.
Sanchez's writing is vivid and immersive; I could visualize every step and feel the emotions of the characters as they navigated their trials. The prose is beautifully crafted, enhancing the overall experience.
In conclusion, Battle Beyond the Veil is a well-written novel that I highly recommend. It offers a blend of adventure, character growth, and emotional depth that will resonate with readers. Whether you're a fan of fantasy or simply looking for a good story, this book is definitely worth your time.

This story felt like a real rollercoaster and kept me guessing at every turn. It opens with the promise of a prophecy and a powerful relic, which quickly becomes the focus of multiple factions hunting for i, and that sense of competition and urgency delivers exactly what it promises.

We meet our FMC as she’s dealing with a frustrating workplace situation: a coworker taking credit for her work. When he suddenly goes missing and she crosses paths with a mysterious, undeniably charming stranger, events start to unfold rapidly. What follows is a journey that challenges her beliefs and forces her to come to terms with a new reality - one in which she turns out to be far more important than she ever imagined.

One of my absolute favorite aspects was the dynamic between the FMC and the MMC. Their sharp banter, snarky comments, and dry sarcasm made them such a joy to read. The 80s pop culture references were the perfect finishing touch, and the Batman and Robin moment was a personal highlight for me.

I honestly didn’t expect to be as entertained as I was. I’m not particularly religious, and most of my knowledge about angels, demons, and related lore comes from movies and TV shows. So yes, there were parts of the story that weren’t entirely clear to me—but I anticipated that going in. The author openly notes that she took some creative liberties to serve the story, and I found the result thoroughly enjoyable.

I was given the honor of an ARC review opportunity for this book, and was absolutely blown away. While it is very different from the author's other series (which I also absolutely love), it was just as full of action, heart-stopping moments, emotion, and some romance along the way. I wasn't sure how angels and demons were going to fit into a modern world urban fantasy novel, but it was done absolutely seamlessly, tying in ancient artifacts and a little bit of history with a modern museum exhibit to bring it all together. There's some wonderful takes on common tropes like second chance romance, secret identity, Chosen One, and an *almost* love triangle, but nothing feels forced or overused. I already knew that Ms. Sanchez was an amazing author, but this book definitely sealed her as an auto-buy author for me.

This is an amazing story about a museum curator who loves Babylonian time period and finds out she has a strong connection she never knew as the story unfolds you fall in love with the main characters easily. A stubborn, strong willed woman who appreciates the past and all things Babylonian. She ends up working with a slayer/ protector angel. Then toss in her ex boyfriend, first true love popping up back into her life what could go wrong? Oh yeah let's not forget demons are a constant threat. This book is magical in its own way. My deepest appreciation to our Author Cassie Sanchez for a wonderful tale and characters I laughed with as they bantered back and forth.

A great urban fantasy! Filled with action and a sweet second chance romance. I loved Cassie’s fictional take on angels and their mystical world; how she wove a creative story while still remaining respectful.
Kyden cracked me up. He’s an angel, honorable, yet easily exasperated by humans. And I love that even though he’s her protector, Zahra is no meek woman. She’ll outsmart and outshoot any man. Throw in her ex-boyfriend Jake (who’s confused most of the time but supportive), and it’s quite the team.
There’s mystery and history, and I loved it. It was an easy read that I devoured quickly.

Thank you to the Author for the arc, my opinions are my own.

Thank you Cassie Sanchez for the fantastic opportunity to read this book as an ARC. A new author for me, but oh how I appreciated this book. In a way, the book is a mix between Crescent City (Sarah J Maas) and City of Angels (yes, the movie from the 90s) but still not. Angels and demons, good versus evil, in a world that ordinary people do not see but are still affected by. Right now a stand-alone that carries itself with bravura.

I was lucky to receive an advanced copy and truly enjoyed this fourth book by Cassie Sanchez. This is a different world and time from her Darkness Trilogy (which I loved reading!). I had a hard time putting this down once I began. Lots of action, romance, twists and turns. Great characters which I could picture easily in my mind's eye. Complex characters that keep you guessing which side are they on? Angels, Demons, humans in our current time; a fun read I would recommend.
