Meadowfield Mystery #4

The Final Chapter Club

Rate this book
The book club promised friendship, fiction and tea… until someone rewrote the ending. When Ellie Swan returned to Meadowfield to help in her gran’s bookshop, she expected quiet days, novels by the fire, and the odd village drama. Instead, the river is rising, the library is under threat, and a secretive local book club has invited a bestselling crime author to town.

The Final Chapter Club should be harmless. It isn’t.

When a club member storms into the shop clutching a mysterious envelope… and collapses outside moments later, Ellie finds herself pulled into a tangle of deadly secrets, old grudges, and dangerous accusations. With the police eyeing the wrong suspects and the book club closing ranks, Ellie starts asking her own questions.

Because in Meadowfield, even cosy little libraries can be hiding very dangerous stories…

Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Richard Osman and Janice Hallett.

Another fun mystery. I was really interested in the plot. I loved the end with Ellie and Daniel, but I do wish there was a little more of their relationship throughout the rest of the story

"The Final Chapter Club" is book #4 in the "Meadowfield Mystery" series by Agatha Frost.

Shortly after a stunning revelation by a book club member at an author reading at the bookshop, the member dies just outside the shop. Long held secrets and grudges amongst the members slowly come to light as Ellie tries to sort out what really happened and why.

The Final Chapter (book) Club had only a few members but frankly, none of them were that likeable. The frictions between the members was clear yet they also closed ranks and tried to deflect attention onto other suspects. There were a number of good twists and misdirection but for me, I was pretty sure who the killer was early on and at least part of the motive but I also suspected there was more going on. The point where Ellie realized what was really going on was good but it took a long time to get there.

In subplots, Ellie's mother Carolyn continues to chew the scenery in her theatrical way. Her father Peter is also dealing with some feelings towards Carolyn. Ellie and Daniel continue to evolve. The seemingly unending rains and threats of flooding were a plot in its own right. It just added another level of stress and frustration to the whole story.

Overall, an interesting cozy mystery.

Murder by Book Club

Plenty going on in this 4th installment in village of Meadowfield--torrential rains, river threatening to wash away the village & all the shops and stores--and a current best selling author coming to do a reading! The thriller takes a back seat to murder, sketchy First Editions, and all manner of drama swirling in & around the Final Chapter Book Club. Naturally, Ellie (who runs her gran's Meadowfield Bookshop when she's NOT investigating crimes) is totally into investigating the first crime...of Murder! Soon enough the cops are both warning her off & grateful for the clues she finds.
Is also about the masks we wear, when we show them, and to whom. This insight is integral to solving the crimes and at the heart of many relationships--like Carolyn & Peter, and Daniel & Ellie.
A good read with some suspension of disbelief (would ANY Detective allow a private citizen to get so involved in their case as Ellie does--despite Ellies "I've GOT to know" attitude).
I read it in less than a day & recommend potential readers begin with Book 1.

Hunting and healing

I had such a good time with this book in the days after Christmas! The Meadowfield setting felt properly atmospheric - all that flooding and the secrets bubbling up alongside it. What really worked for me was how much the story focused on mending old wounds and fractured friendships, not just hunting down the killer. My only quibble was that Ellie seemed to have unrealistic access everywhere - Angela the police officer was maybe a bit too accommodating with boundaries! But honestly, I was too engaged to mind much. A real comfort read with enough bite to keep things interesting.

I'm consistently delighted with Agatha Frost's ability to create fascinating mysteries filled with realistic characters and lovely settings. The Final Chapter Club is another of them, drawing me into the story as if I were living in Meadowfield, and the village and its residents are part of my life. The plotline resolutions are superb, and character development and interactions are excellent. I very much look forward to the next of this series. Congratulations on another fabulous success, Agatha.

Hard to Put Down

“The Final Chapter Club”, the latest in the Meadowfield Bookshop Mystery series, is hard to put down. There is more character and relationship development, not only between Ellie and Daniel, but between Ellie’s parents. The mystery keeps you guessing as there are many twists and turns. I highly recommend this book.

Lots of Twists

I choose this rating because I found I was staying up way later than usual. Each chapter ending left me wanting to read more. There was murder but it wasn't presented violently. i could follow the different characters without having to go back. Enjoyable for everyone, especially book worms.

Another book in this delightful series

It has murder, romance and complicated relationships and confused feelings.
A book shop, coffee, romance and murder and a little more meat on the bones than a lot of cozy mysteries.

Another Great Read

This was a great mystery. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in the plot. Ellie's sleuthing skills were top notch, if a little distracted. It was a perfect balance. I can't wait for the next book.

Another great read!

If you enjoy a proper focus mystery then this is the book for you. It helps if you have read any of the others in the series but it is also a good read alone book. I try to always figure out the plot before the end but this kept me guess right to the end!

This was one of the better books in this series. Interesting characters and a surprise ending that was a little complicated. Dark and rainy atmosphere.

Great read

The book was really interesting, full of twists and turns. I enjoy the characters that all have their quirks. With Granma Maggie to set them straight.
