I went into Hollow expecting a fun, moody vampire read and ended up really enjoying the atmosphere and emotional undercurrent more than I thought I would. This book leans heavily into vibes, identity, and the unsettling feeling of being thrust into a world you never asked for, and that worked well for me.

The strongest part of the story for me was the premise itself. Watching the main character navigate a sudden transformation while being pulled between long standing rivalries and complicated loyalties kept me turning pages. There is a strong sense of isolation and longing woven throughout the book, and I appreciated how much time was spent on the internal struggle of figuring out where she belongs now that everything has changed.

The worldbuilding was interesting and had some genuinely creepy moments, especially when the supernatural elements leaned darker. I liked the idea of legacy and history carrying weight in the vampire world, and the tension between different factions added stakes even when the pacing slowed a bit. While some parts felt slightly rushed and I wanted more depth in certain character dynamics, I still found myself invested in where things were heading.

This isn’t a reinvent the genre kind of vampire story, but it doesn’t need to be. It knows what it wants to be and delivers a solid, moody read that feels very on brand for readers who enjoy paranormal drama, found family themes, and morally complicated choices. I would absolutely continue with the next book to see how the characters and world expand.

I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review.

I got the kindle edition of this after seeing a video of the author talk about another author that wrote a blurb about it for her but ended up writing an entire essay about it before she passed. That author is one of my favorites so I was intrigued if the story was good enough to warrant a super long review about it.

So I bought it. And no this review isn’t going to be some long essay.

I promise.

The prologue felt really long and part of it felt kind of unnecessary to the rest of the book. Which is kind of a theme for the first few chapters of the book. That being said it might have been one of my favorite reads of the year. Which is shocking after seeing the reviews on here that didn’t like it. I always end up liking things the majority of people dislike so no surprise there lol. The characters were diverse and felt like a family. I wish we had gotten to know them more. So much history they’ve seen. It was kind of slow for being a vampire book but to me it didn’t drag on like most slow books do. It could have benefited by being longer. It felt like most of the book was taking in information(The author definitely went to the Sarah Maas school of a crap ton of stuff happening in the last part of the book lol). I did suspect who the villain was but the reveal was crazy! AND THAT ENDING??? SHOOK. WHAT. THE. FUCK??? I personally had a great time reading it and I highly recommended if you like vampires

At 25, Mia still hasn’t found her purpose, but she’s young… she’s got time. Or so she thought. Her life is tragically cut short, until she wakes up in a funeral home full of vampires welcoming her to the family. Her destiny is larger than life, with the whole community of vampires’ futures at stake*.

Hollow was a quick and fun read by one of my favorite TikTok personalities, Celina Myers (aka @celinaspookyboo). I love the nod to queer readers, as Mia is attracted to both female and male vampires in the afterlife. The FMC is likable. Hollow reads like a YA novel to me, but has some more mature topics referenced, including gruesome murder and drug use. The characters make the novel feel lighthearted while the plot brings a sinister edge. I do wish Mia had more time at each house, as so many feelings and events happen within just a few days. The plot sped up pretty quick after Mia dies, leaving me wanting more time with each of the family members and more details in the story. I really connected to them, and felt a little cheated on the time I got to spend with Cordelia, Kris, and Margo. However, Hollow made me feel good, and feeling good is why I read books. Give Hollow a little bite, you might like it the way it tastes*.

*I couldn’t resist thawing a few dad jokes in there.

I think I heard about this book on Celina's social media. Lucky for me it was available on Kobo plus. I don't know how my expectations were shaped in the beginning, but sadly this book was a letdown for me from start to finish.

Mia is obviously our main character in this story. However, there are quite some point of view switches in the beginning of this story. They were weird and a bit awkwardly written in at times. Sometimes the timeline ran away with me sometimes and not in a good way. I also thought the whole reason they turned Mia in the first place seemed so void for most of the story, until they finally came up with a good reason for it. But that reason felt more like an afterthought because they didn't go into it really deeply.

Throughout this book my main feeling was me being bored, another red flag. Prologue? Bored. Beginning? Bored. Ending? A little blip of interest, but still quite bored. I had such a high urge to DNF this book from the 25 procent mark. I powered through, but in my opinion it's not really worth your time.

The points it did get were for the queer representation. But that instalove moment? No, just no. I cannot recommend this book, which definitely makes me sad. I had hoped for more fun, but sadly it came out differently.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publishers for the audio ARC of Hollow.

I have been anticipating this book for a LONG time and was not let down.
This threw me back into my teenage angst vampire obsessed years like they were yesterday.
The audio narrator was wonderful, she did a fantastic job. I hope to hear her narrate book 2.

I was a little confused at the time jump because the narrator did not indicate one, but i was quickly able to

understand what was happening and the story flow went smoothly after that.

Celina did an amazing job with handling such a large number of characters, giving them their own mini plots and creating compelling backstories.

THAT CLIFF HANGER THOUGH. I WAS NOT PREPARED AND I DID NOT SEE COMING!!!

in all seriousness, if you had a love of vampires or wanted to be a vampire when you were a kid, you will enjoy this book. I highly recommend the audio version, i loved the characters being brought to life!

Hallow feels like slipping into a shadowed dream you don’t want to wake from. The story moves through grief and fear with a quiet intensity, letting the darkness bloom slowly until it’s impossible to look away. I loved how deeply personal the horror felt — unsettling not just because of what happens, but because of what it asks you to feel. It lingered with me, echoing long after I turned the last page, and I already know this is a story I’ll think about for a long time. Please give me another one!!

The narrator of this audiobook did a phenomenal job and was part of the reason I continued to listen to the book instead of DNFing.

I was really intrigued by the original story that took place in the 1700s and was enjoying the storyline and setting but once it swapped to the modern timeline it lost me.

It felt a little too CW for me, the main character making naïve choices and the dialogue made the book feel more young adult. It wasn’t bad by any means but just wasn't the book for me personally.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.
