Merona Grant and the Island of Devils

Rate this book
Before the Tomb of Golgotha—when most are relishing the glamour of the Roaring Twenties—the Grant sisters, Liora and Merona, are striking out in search of adventure in the untamed parts of the world. But when money gets life-threateningly tight, Merona hops a plane with an eccentric pilot to snag a job that promises to pay off their debts.
Her luck only worsens when her plane is ripped from the sky by an unnatural storm, and she finds herself stranded on a hostile island. Now Merona must survive long enough to be rescued, with only her machete, lasso, and razor-sharp wits in her arsenal. But an acerbic personality is little help against starvation, infection, and cannibals, especially when it becomes clear that supernatural forces are at work on the forces that seem intent on holding her prisoner.
Merona must find her resolve and depend on an unexpected ally as she is pushed to her limits, but even if the island doesn’t claim her life, it might still cost her more dearly than she could imagine. But who ever said the path to becoming a seasoned treasure hunter was easy?

A mad scribbler of both art and fiction, Brina spends her days hunched over a keyboard or drawing table, developing her skills and habitual bad posture, all the while refusing to settle on an art style or genre.
Her not-as-loyal-as-in-fiction puppy likes to find awkward and cramped places near Brina's feet to nap whenever she is working, but mostly enjoys playing fetch, going for runs, and discovering new ways to give her owner mini heart attacks whenever the doorbell rings.

Seven years ago, I read and reviewed Merona Grant and the Lost Tomb of Golgotha, a pulp fiction homage to the adventure tales of yesteryear. The sequel, Merona Grant and the Island of Devils, is a grittier, more introspective tale than the first in the series. In this one, Merona crash lands on an island in the Atlantic that is surrounded with mystery.
A survival story is an adventure story, but it’s in a niche category. Unlike most novels, the reader must accompany the hero and worry about the basics of life. Much of the beginning of the narrative is devoted to these sequences. This isn’t only a survival story, however. The swamp, in particular, holds the key chapters that give the reader the sense of exploration and wonder.
Merona Grant and the Island of Devils is a worthy successor to the first in the series. The book is not a copy of the first in the series, but a darker and deeper narrative into the survival adventure story. I’m hopeful Ms. Williamson constructs another.

Brina Williamson is one of the quintessential voices of modern noir fiction. In Merona Grant and the Island of Devils, we get not just a substantial portion of Merona’s backstory, but also the origin story of one of the best characters in the series (not named Merona).

The story itself is gripping, fun, and just a little creepy, but in a strangely comfortable way. Brina somehow makes an otherwise overdone plot device feel fresh, familiar, and genuinely entertaining.

In her sophomore endeavor into the world of Merona Grant, Brina is truly coming into her own as a noir thriller writer.
