I got to ARC read this book and I am so stoked about it. I loved that even though the book carried some ‘familiar’ magic concepts, overall it was unique! I loved following Aklys and Vera and found myself wishing they would meet already, the whole time 😂 there are some really great twists, some unexpected betrayals and I was absolutely locked in the whole time! 10/10 would recommend. I cannot wait for book two!

As an ARC reader of Born of Shadow and Flame, I found this novel to be an engaging and ambitious dark fantasy that strikes a compelling balance between worldbuilding, character stakes, and emotional depth.
From the outset, the elemental magic system and political intrigue pulled me into a vividly imagined world — one that felt both dangerous and filled with potential. The dual protagonists (a princess shaped by shadow and a warrior forged in flame) each bring distinct perspectives that enrich the narrative, and I appreciated how their arcs intertwined naturally without feeling rushed. 
The pacing was generally strong; the early worldbuilding hooked me right away, though there were moments where the complexity of the lore slightly slowed the forward momentum. That said, once the story truly hit its stride in the mid-sections, the stakes — both romantic and political — elevated the tension in a way that kept me turning pages well into the night.
The character growth was a particular highlight. The internal struggles of both leads — balancing duty, identity, and desire — added emotional weight that grounded the high fantasy elements. While a couple of secondary characters could have used deeper development, the primary cast’s chemistry and individual motivations were consistently compelling.
If you love richly crafted fantasy worlds with elemental magic, layered protagonists, and a slow-burn relational arc, Born of Shadow and Flame will be a satisfying and immersive read. I’m excited to see where Alexandria takes this story next.

Two lives, two stories and one ultimate demon.
This book was absolutely amazing! The character buildup, the story lines, the action and the twists and turns were absolutely astonishing. How certain pieces interconnected into the different stories and the different characters connected to different people and showing up when you least expect it, was a work of art!

Wow. I was completely floored after finishing Born of Shadow and Flame by Kathryn Alexandria. The author’s mastery of world-building and character development is nothing short of extraordinary; on par with some of the epic sagas of our time, like Game of Thrones and Harry Potter.From the very first chapter, I was pulled into a world so vivid and alive that I could practically feel the tension, the magic, and the emotion with every turn of the page. The story unfolds with a perfect balance of intrigue and pacing, guiding readers down a treacherous and breathtaking path toward a finale that absolutely delivers.The ending offers a wonderful sense of closure while still leaving you yearning for more. something only the best stories manage to achieve. Kathryn Alexandria is a storyteller to watch, and Born of Shadow and Flame is a must-read for fantasy lovers everywhere.

I absolutely loved this read. This was actually my favorite Fantasy read of 2025 (and I've read quite a few this year)
Firstly the writing style is what hooked me from the beginning. This was beautifully written. I can feel a lot has been poured into the making of this story.
It was perfect for me, in the way the words flowed, the descriptions and back history.
I loved how the story depicted each character, going back and forth but ultimately the big thought process of the story brought them all interconnected somehow. Their past, present and family connections, friendships.
The elemental magic system was fantastic. I loved reading the top blurb of history on each chapter, and it's very important to read, to depict the whole concept.
The two main female characters were incredibly unique, powerful and beautiful in their own way. Both with immense trauma in different ways, sacrifices forced upon them setting their future paths on course and finding their destiny.
I absolutely love a fated love situation. The yearning, to really feel your person in life and will do anything to protect you.
The conclusion has set a real exciting continuation and I can't wait to see where this story goes. I'm really looking forward to more. Thank you so much for the opportunity to ARC read this for you. I absolutely loved this! 🩵

I will readily admit that this book was a surprising gem for me. I am not always taken in by the fantasy genre, but I feel that this one was well written and weaved a story while showing you who the characters are exactly. The author did an excellent job of drawing you into the two concurrent stories without make it too overwhelming. Initially I struggled with all that was going on especially because it was happening in 2 places. There are a fair number of characters and a lot of world building going on. These types of stories can be difficult because nearly everything needs to be explained, while moving the story along. I do feel that Kathryn accomplished this for the most part during the story. The closer we got to the ending, clearer it became that there would be another book. I appreciate her wrapping up the inner stories, while leaving the outer story open to creating a book two. This book focuses mostly on the plot of saving their world, although there are a couple blooming relationships within the two groups that really are not deeply explored. Just a couple kisses here and there and some hand holding. Overall I did enjoy this story and am interested to read book two to see what happens within their world!

I was gutted when it was time for me to read this as I was in a major book hangover from another book and was not in the right mood to approach this but there was a deadline. I will definitely read this in the future when i'm in a better mood!
If you enjoy fantasy, strong female characters, a yearning love and great writing that allowed you to imagine the world of the book. This is the book for you! 🥰
I gave it 3.5 stars as it was actually good and kept me interested throughout. I was looking ahead to find out more (a bad habit of mine) and that usually means its a fab book. My book mood just didnt help!

This is a fantastic story that balances world building, character development, and story progression. I was so intrigued by the magic system and the world history and loved how the author presented it. It is a medium-paced story that pulls you along as the world is revealed. The story resolves in such a way that I’m content with the first book but have SO many questions that I look forward to unfolding in the sequel(s).
My only complaints about this book are some editing issues - timelines not matching from one page to the next, a sentence or two that seem out of place. Overall, nothing that took away from the story. Very well done!

The first book in what I can only assume with become a series. And the trope that is developing is fated mates, naturally I LOVED it. I love a good romantasy. This story was written and developed so well. The world building was done in a unique way that had me surprised(and I read a lot of these types of books)
The story takes the perspective of two female characters, these characters do not know each other and are geographically far apart. We learn little things along the way that hint at whyyy these specific characters POVs are important. But that’s for the reader to find out!

First off- WOW. I am so thankful to have been an ARC for this book. Born of Shadow and Flame by Kathryn Alexandria is a beautifully layered romantasy that excels in both its worldbuilding and character arcs. The story is rich with political intrigue, shifting alliances, power struggles, and calculated decisions that feel grounded and consequential. The political landscape adds real tension to the plot and raises the stakes, making every choice feel heavy and uncertain.
What truly sets this book apart is the character development. Vera and Aklys, the dual POV FMC’s, are complex, flawed, and constantly evolving, shaped by their pasts and the weight of their responsibilities. Their growth feels authentic and emotionally earned, reinforcing the idea that strength isn’t found in perfection, but in accountability and resilience. Here is a quote that resonates to this:

Wow, I can truly say I have not read a book that captivated me from start to finish in a long time. I was privileged enough to be an ARC reader for this book but I will scream from the rooftops how this book is so incredible and I need book two like yesterday. The book follows two incredibly strong woman in separate stories and when each storyline shifts, I truly was one the edge of my seat. Well done Kate!!

I had the chance to be an ARC reader of Born of Flame and Shadow, and I absolutely loved it. This romantasy follows two different FMCs living in separate parts of the same world, and the dual perspectives kept the story moving fast. It’s definitely a quick, engaging read with a world that pulls you in right away.
There’s no spice in this one, but the tension is still there. A little bit enemies-to-lovers (but not exactly), and the fated-mates element was really fun. I loved seeing how the relationships developed without relying on spice to carry the story.
A couple of parts were a bit confusing, but that’s pretty normal for the first book in a new fantasy world. Nothing that took away from the overall experience.
Overall, this was a fast-paced, exciting start to a new series, and I can’t wait to see where book two goes!

Ok so this novel is a rollercoaster of emotions. The first chapter had me immediately hooked—and then it only gets better from there. The world-building is easy to follow, it mixes a lot of already well-known terms: “soulmates,” powers like fire and shadow (we have a shadow daddy. DO I NEED TO SAY MORE????????????). You will encounter love, betrayal, unforgivable quotes, and at least THREE plot twists!!! Overall, this is a solid story about a brave girl and an EVEN BRAVER mother. I cried at the end of the book because nothing could have prepared me for what happened.

This book was PHENOMENAL if you love a strong FMC, here you get two, and supporting character driven story laced with a beautifully crafted world and topped off with an excellent story that was well paced, well written and executed to brilliant fashion.
Two women, worlds apart, face a prophecy neither of them want to be apart of while facing secrets and discoveries that tear their worlds apart.
The magic system was really fun, based on he elements but the part it played felt key but subtle only used where required to propel the story. It had romance but that to was fairly subtle and to the side but also handled tactfully, used where needed to enhance our characters stories.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC and this review is before it's release date on January 23rd.

If you love TWO STRONG FMC’s. Swoon worthy love interests. Side characters that you will connect with and cherish. Political turmoil. Magic systems. And plot twists that drop your jaw and have you reading at 10x speed. THIS IS FOR YOU!
The dual POV in this book is spectacular! Getting to know two FMC’s and their lifes that dare I say are more similar than different… Invisible strings flutter throughout the story connecting all parts and making everything important!
The magic systems, villains, side quests, main objectives all put you into a vibrant world where unlikely friendships may be the savior they so desperately need.
I truly cannot say anything bad about this book and I am patiently (impatiently) awaiting the next one!

I am so glad I got the opportunity to read this book and am excited for the story to continue!! I love when a book can surprise me with twists and emotions!! My only opinion on the book was I found it hard to follow the first few seconds of the beginning chapters. I wish there was a pov indicator for each chapter. The story is multi pov and follows two women facing issues it does become easier to jump into each perspective after a few chapters, once you learn the characters better so don’t let this stop you it’s just the one thing I would have suggested! Kathryn has a way with her descriptions that really brings you into the story! The ending ugh no spoilers but that was mean in the best way! Thanks for sharing your story with me!!

This was different than anything I’ve ever read but in a good way. The writing itself was so detailed. It puts you directly into the story with such vivid descriptions. I could feel the tension, the environment, the heartbreak, and everything in between.
Definitely a female empowering book. Both FMCs are strong on their own, figuring out their destinies in different yet inspiring ways. It was a nice break from the typical “oh I’m so weak and fragile.” There’s multiple other important female roles as well, which I love.
A LOT of world building. If you want a detailed breakdown of the world and how it works, this is a good book. Reader friendly for sure. I never felt lost or confused; just fully immersed in the story.
I did find myself wishing for a bit more dialogue between characters. I also found myself searching for a bit more background on the romance side of things. That bit felt a bit rushed in some parts, but I understand it was meant to be more plot heavy. That’s just personal preference.
Kathryn Alexandria created a beautiful world, full of characters whose development felt justified and satisfying. I rooted for every single character as if they were my friends.
I have A LOT of questions, and I’ll definitely be reaching for later books so they can be answered!

I did find myself wishing for a bit more dialogue between characters. I also found myself searching for a bit more background on the romance side of things. That bit felt a bit rushed in some parts, but I understand it was meant to be more plot heavy. That’s just personal preference.
Kathryn Alexandria created a beautiful world, full of characters whose development felt justified and satisfying. I rooted for every single character as if they were my friends.
I have A LOT of questions, and I’ll definitely be reaching for later books so they can be answered!

I had the privilege to be an arc reader for this amazing book. The world building was beautiful and the descriptions at time left me breathless. The two main POVs were so stunningly written that it left me yearning for more from both of the FMCs. I felt myself wanting to slow down my consumption of the chapters just so I could live in Vera’s and Aklys’ world if only just for a little longer. The twists and turns and unexpected moments were so satisfying and heart stopping, I loved every moment I was able to sit down and escape into such a wonderfully written world. I am beyond blessed to have been able to experience something so special! I hope for my sanity that there is a second book to follow as I have fallen in love with each of these characters and NEED to know where their storyline goes! Definitely one of my new found favorites that I will be rereading. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.

I had to take reading this book slower than I would most books on top of the holidays it was harder to burst through it like I do others. It had a complex magic system and a complex political system told from a dual POV. The reader was exposed to the corrupt political systems of the Mortas and Eros kingdoms through the POVS of Aklys Blackwell and Guinevere Thorne. Aklys is Princess of the Mortas and the youngest child of the cruel king. She lives in constant fear of her father and solitary life since her brother was exiled from the kingdom. We see Eros through Guinevere "Vera" Thorne's eyes. Vera grew up in the lower city of Eros; she has a deep burning hatred for the Premier of her kingdom and would love nothing more than to see him crumble. Each kingdom has its own specific element. Eros is fire and Mortas is shadow. The magic system is very complex, and it is not explained how those with are born with it. The first book laid out the origination of the magic system and how it came to be and how the corruption began in Eros and Mortas specifically. I am hoping for more explanation in the next book of how magic is passed down or comes to be in each person.
The pacing of this book was definitely medium paced. It was not until about 60% that I felt I was getting anywhere when it came to answers but even then, I still felt that a lot of my questions were still left unanswered. I felt that Vera was written very very well. I really enjoyed her character, and I enjoyed the romance aspect between her and Ryker. I felt that she was your typical heroine but her experience living in the lower city did not make her naive. Her soul bond with Ryker was an amazing add especially with history potentially repeating itself, it was cool to see her read the history book and not catch that little bit. I will be excited when she realizes because I know Ryker does. Now onto Aklys... I felt that she was the most underdeveloped. There will be some spoilers from this point forward. I felt her time spent isolated really stunted her growth and she was reckless and naive. She got people she cared about hurt/killed and realized too late the dangers of the place she lived in. She thought herself better than her father's employees but realizing that most of them were trying to protect her and that she was the fool the whole time. At the end when she realized her mother was alive and left her there to be used and abused, she was just fine with it all. Her mother and Seraphina had an inkling the whole-time terrible things were happening the whole time and left her there. That is something unforgivable. I feel like she forgave her mother too quickly and is going to forgive her brother too quickly as well when they all left her behind to be abused and that to be so messed up. I feel like again it is another example of how she is stunted in her growth because she spent so much time alone.
I am so curious to see both Aklys and Vera come together and the reunion of the Blackwell family. The story and the overall plot were very intriguing. The writing was incredibly easy to get into and if it were not for the holidays I would have finished this much faster. I cannot wait to see what comes next in this series and where this series goes.

A princess born of shadow. A fighter born of flame. This story pulled me in right away with its elemental magic, political tension, and a world that felt both dangerous and full of possibility.
The dual POV was a huge strength for me. Vera, a lowborn street-fighter with fire in her veins, and Aklys, a princess raised in the shadow of a tyrant, are both compelling in very different ways. Their stories unfold on opposite sides of the world, but they’re deeply connected by prophecy, power, and impossible choices. I loved how their arcs developed naturally and never felt rushed, even as the stakes kept rising.
The worldbuilding is rich and layered. The elemental magic system was especially well done, and I really enjoyed the short historical blurbs at the start of each chapter—they added depth and context and felt important to the overall story. There’s a lot going on politically, with rebellions, corrupt rulers, and morally gray decisions, which made the story feel grounded despite the magic.
That said, the complexity of the lore and the number of characters did slow the pacing a bit at times, especially when switching between two locations. I was also reading during a busy period, so a few sections were harder to follow after putting the book down for a few days. There were some minor editing issues, mostly timeline inconsistencies that caused brief confusion, but nothing that took away from my overall enjoyment.
What really stood out was the emotional core. Both main characters carry deep trauma, shaped by family, sacrifice, and impossible expectations, and watching them wrestle with who they are versus who they’re supposed to be was powerful. The story does a great job of weaving past, present, friendships, and family connections into something that feels cohesive by the end.
The ending made it clear this is the start of a larger story, and I appreciated how the author wrapped up the inner arcs while leaving the bigger picture open for book two.
Overall, this was an engaging, well-imagined fantasy with strong female leads, an intriguing magic system, and a lot of heart. I’d definitely continue the series.

We have a double POV, first story follows Aklys, a princess, whose loneliness and selfdoubt bring her to a moment of her life where she is forced to do despicable things to a stranger. I liked character development, it was reasonable but my only critique is that we don’t know a lot about Patrick’s backround so it felt a tiny tiny bit like she likes him because he ist The only person showing her kindness and affection..
Our MMC Patrick is undoubtedly a strong character, his fear FOR Aklys and not OF her or for himself adds depth to the story. He only sees her horror, her suffering and their connection was so beautifully written.
Our second POV follows Red aka Vera, a lowborn girl in a different continent, driven by finding a cure for her mother’s curse. Their connection and LOVE was so so so unique, I loved the focus on the motherly- daughter bond and actually cried in the end. Our FMC makes mistakes but she owns them, this is what I really liked in this book: everything felt earned and all had a price. The prophecy doesn’t save you- you need to save yourself.
We have a tiny love- triangle situation here (yeah Julian is okay but just no😅) but our MMC Ryker is everything. I LOVED them. I loved their simple “who can stare longer” contests, their mind connection, their depth…🫶 and the longing- my god, I am internally screaming they should kiss already 😩🥲
I am so ready for their story and how the connection between Aklys and Vera turns out!

This is a dual POV story with two FMC and it doesn’t disappoint! On one side you have Vera Thorne, a hidden identity street fighter who is trying to take care of her ailing mother while also trying to get them out of Rune City in Eros where a lowborne is looked down upon by the highborne who try to strip them of their powers. During a run in at the bar with the Warden, a guard of the premier, their enemy Vera meets Ryker Blackwell who is secretly working as a guard to find the aetherborne and protect. A man that was the boy when she saw him and they played in the Mortas woods together.
Across the ocean you have Akylys Blackwell, whose father is the king of the Shadowlands, Mortas. A father who locks her in the dungeon when she does cooperate and forces her to use her black shadowflame to torture people. During one of those times she meets Garrick Stormborn, a part of the Bain, the rebels that they have taken captive. She nurses him secretly back to health all the while searching for answers and realizing her father will stop at nothing to find the aether and isn’t her father at all but who has been taken over by a demon.
Both ladies are on a journey of their own, making choices and sacrifices, along with finding new friends and maybe love while not know that they will be eventually brought together for something bigger. I cannot wait for book two to see what happens as the two groups come together and where their new found relationships will lead. You do not want to miss out on this story!

Every so often, a different POV is thrown in the mix, but it's never for long. Its a brief look at the characters we are following through someone else's eyes. I love this.
Every time the POV changed, I felt like it would be the end, we wouldn't see what happened. Kathryn occasionally left them on cliffhangers, then would switch to the other FMC like we'd been with her the whole time. There were plot twists I didn't see coming, and some I did. I squealed, I laughed, I panicked. I truthfully loved this book, and I cannot wait for the sequel!

I really enjoyed the story of Vera and Aklys.
This story features two FMCs in different parts of Andor. You bounce between Vera, who is the “Flame” and Aklys who’s is the Shadow, in the Shadow and Flame.
Vera is a lowborne who discovers her powers one night when she is accosted by a guard. She later learns that she is part of a prophecy and must learn to accept the consequences of that. Her group of friends are tasked with stealing a rare item and that theft leads to several consequences that also introduce us to new characters who are part of a resistance to the King of Eros. Watching all the relationships grow and falter kept you on your toes
Aklys is the princess of the Shadowlands. After her mother dies and her brother is banished her father treats her with nothing but contempt and uses her powers to torture a prisoner. Aklys has a familiar Dorrina, a crow who is her only real friend. Throughout the book Aklys learns that not everything is as it seems and must make a decision on whose side she is on, her father’s or the resistance.
Hopefully in book two our two FMC can meet and we can stay more on one storyline. While I understand that it was necessary to give both girls their own chapters, I kind of wish they each had their own book instead. Just as you end on character’s chapter on a cliff hanger, you have to read a chapter (or 2-3) from the other characters arc.

I got those Direbound vibes from this one immediately and was hooked from page one. The FMC is a total badass and I’m a sucker for a world with familiars. What really made this feel unique was having two FMCs. I haven’t really read anything like that before, and it was done in such a great way that it kept the whole story feeling fresh.
The tension throughout is unreal, especially because we don’t meet the MMC right away. It kept the plot from being too obvious or cliché, and I loved the mystery of how things were held back. It definitely kept me on my toes for the first half, even though the "interruption" trope got a bit repetitive after a while. I love a good cliffhanger, but when characters get cut off right before explaining something important multiple times, it starts to feel more like an irritation than a suspense builder.
I was absolutely devouring this book until about the 70% mark, but then the pacing hit a bit of a wall. It got a little slow toward the end and there were some moments where the characters felt a bit too naive for my liking, but the world-building and the initial hook were still strong enough that I really enjoyed the ride.
If you're looking for high tension and badass leads, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up!

I got those Direbound vibes from this one immediately and was hooked from page one. The FMC is a total badass and I’m a sucker for a world with familiars. What really made this feel unique was having two FMCs. I haven’t really read anything like that before, and it was done in such a great way that it kept the whole story feeling fresh.
The tension throughout is unreal, especially because we don’t meet the MMC right away. It kept the plot from being too obvious or cliché, and I loved the mystery of how things were held back.
