1st book of 2026 and definitely a good start.

The book is short, fast paced, full of secrets, suspicion, lies, betrayals and has a slighttt hint of romance.

The chapters are short and quick to follow. The writing is stunning, binge-able and easy to read.
The plot line is SOOOO interesting. It feels like a bollywood movie I can totally imagine with Ajay Devgan as the hero.

The characters are strong, mindful and has good character depth for such a short novel.
I love how they took their time and didn't make any stupid decision that could ruin and risk the entire mission and everyone's lives.

Some books grip you with fast action.
This one held me with silence.

When I started this book, I expected a crime thriller with romance woven in. What I didn’t expect was how quietly the story would settle into my mind and stay there. The book doesn’t rush you. it slowly pulls you in, asking you to pay attention, to notice what is missing as much as what is present.

At first, the story feels like a regular crime investigation, but as I read further, I realised it was much more about people than about the case itself. Arjun Mehra felt very real to me not heroic in an exaggerated way, but quiet, observant, and slightly unsettled, even when he doesn’t fully understand why. Watching him uncover not just the truth behind the case, but also pieces of his own past, kept me engaged till the end.

Reema’s character brought emotional depth to the story. Their connection didn’t feel forced or rushed. It grew naturally, through shared moments and uncertainty. I liked that the romance stayed subtle and meaningful instead of overpowering the thriller element.

The pacing is steady. This isn’t a fast, action-packed thriller, and that worked for me. The story takes its time, letting each revelation sink in. Some parts made me pause and think, especially about memory, truth, and how easily things can be hidden or erased.

It follows the story of Crime Branch Officer Arjun Mehra and Reema with a narrative by Sweta Singh which resonates with the readers.This story of investigation, missing evidence and erased files keeps you hooked till the end. The antagonists in the story add a mysterious twist to the thriller. The bond between the protagonists Arjun and Reema is quiet with shared wounds, fear and silent love.

Overall, the characters are weaved in a story which also has resilience, self discovery, fear and courage. The Author delves into a journey where shadows i.e secrets persist unseen where no light or candle speaks the truth but the moment you speak, the shadows begin to fade. A recommended read!

There are VIP books and then there are what I call VPG books- Visceral, Passionate and Gut wrenching. 'When the Silence Spoke' by Sweta Singh is one. Spanning decades, this dramatic thriller unfolds like a fist around your guts. It squeezes you slowly until you are gasping for more: more drama, more violence, more thrill. And Singh delivers it all.

So what is it about? Officer Arjun and Reema cross paths in an investigation where past is murky and secrets galore. Much is at stake and the foces hiding behind the foreground won't hesitate to use violence or any other means necessary. What's the connection of the murder with their past lives? Is there any? Well, I am not going to tell you everything here. Pick it up and find out more.

It's an emotionally charged thriller that compromises on nothing- neither human drama nor the slick thrills it promises. The drama and the thrill move at the same pace and that's always good for a thriller. Prologue effectively sets the scene for the things to come.

As the story progresses, the author builds up emotion and drama, and throws the characters into the mix. The reader can't help build a bridge of empathy with the lives of these people. An emotional cord is immediately hooked and it continues until the last page is turned over.

The characters of this story are unpredictable, impulsive, multi dimensional and drive the story forward. It's a delight to see a character-driven story because their actions are as interesting as the plot and the twists. This also makes up for layering of the characters, adding a touch of humanity to papery words and that's just delightful.

The book is written in a calm and confident way, which I did not expect. The mystery, in the book builds up slowly. You start to feel like something is not right because of the mood not because something scary happens. Arjuns journey is really well done as he goes from doing his job to finding out secrets that people wanted to keep hidden. The way Arjun and Reema feel about each other is complicated. It feels real. They are both scared and vulnerable. I liked that the book does not give you all the answers away. It makes you feel uncomfortable. That is what it is supposed to do. The book feels very real when it talks about people losing their identities and being silenced. The book makes you think about how this could happen. Arjun and Reemas story is an example of this. I picked up When the Shadows Spoke expecting a standard crime thriller, but it turned out to be so much more. It’s a perfect blend of mystery, romance, and psychological depth.

What I loved most was that Arjun isn’t some superhero detective—he feels like a regular guy you could actually know, which makes the stakes feel higher. Reema is a fantastic counterpart; she has this quiet strength about her, and their relationship feels genuinely earned, not forced for the plot.

The writing does a great job of building tension without being over the top. You constantly feel like something bad is looming, and the "missing clues" and changing stories kept me guessing.
