A solid continuation to the series. It is clear the author is getting continuously better at writing, especially in things like pacing, point of view usage, and humor. I love that we are really starting to get some world building to all parts of the world he has created. The humor has become less constant and now more of a seasoning sprinkled with great care to enhance not over power. Can’t wait for book 9! Keep the ant puns coming, and FOR THE COLONY!!!

Better and Better

This book wasn't just good, it was BRILLIANT. I love how much the world had fleshed out over time, I love the clips into the future, and I love how its a world that's continuing to grow evolve and expand with a character thats not spending all of their time town building. Perfection.

Chrysalis is actually the series that got me into LitRPG in the first place. I originally read it on Royal Road back when most (if not all) of it was available for free, and I’ve stayed caught up ever since. Because of how it’s written, more like a continuous web serial than cleanly divided books it can be hard to tell where one “book” ends and another begins. It really feels like one long, ongoing story.

At its core, Chrysalis reminds me of a darker version of So I’m a Spider, So What?. It has that same evolution-heavy progression, survival focus, and monster perspective, but with more emphasis on colony-building and a slightly heavier tone.

The biggest strength of the series is its progression system. If you enjoy the “numbers go up” aspect of LitRPG skills, evolutions, stats, upgrades this story absolutely delivers. The leveling is frequent and detailed, and watching both the main character and the colony grow is genuinely satisfying.

The author also does a good job of introducing new elements over time. New enemy types, new strata, and especially new kinds of ants help keep things fresh. Some of the later additions like more specialized or themed ants (there’s one with a kind of banker/economic role) add a fun twist to the colony dynamic. That said, the same strengths can become weaknesses.

The system-heavy writing can get very dense, especially later on. There are moments where the stat breakdowns and mechanics become so convoluted that they’re hard to follow or just blur together.

Pacing is another issue. The story can start to feel repetitive, falling into a loop of:
- descend to a new stratum
- encounter stronger enemies
- evolve and adapt
- repeat

It’s still entertaining, but the structure becomes predictable over time. Another weakness is the lack of strong secondary characters. The world is interesting, but side characters don’t always get the depth they need, which can make things feel a bit flat outside of the main progression.

Overall, Chrysalis is a solid and enjoyable LitRPG especially if you’re into deep progression systems and colony-building. It’s not perfect, and it can get repetitive and overly complex, but it stays engaging enough to keep reading.

If you love stats, evolution, and long-running progression stories, this is an easy recommendation.

If you’re not a fan of heavy system mechanics or prefer strong character-driven storytelling, this probably isn’t the best place to start.

Such antics!

Another great entry into one of my current favorite series.
We get to see Anthony & friends/ family step up to new new challenges facing the colony. The demons are riled up, the ancients are rising, and yet another wave is about to rock the dungeon world. Oh, and the ants accidently event a new sport. No big deal.

Clackers gotta clack

I was worried that at the end Anthony would be beaten by the little ones, fortunately that didn't happen. It's become one of my least favorite tropes. The plucky underdog comes through in the end. Even though there is no way it would ever happen. Thank you for not doing that. Tom out

Now I have to wait till July

These books are like fantasy cocaine. You draw one line and you tell yourself that you’ll stop and pace it out and that it one be a big deal and instead you dump the whole bag out and finish it in day…

Absolutely Awesomeness

This story of a young man being reborn as a dungeon ant was fantastic. At the end of this episode Ant has a new champion to train. The only problem is the timeline keeps changing. Has it only been a year, or is it decades?

Ant-other great book

The book is a refreshing addition to the series and genre. With all the crazy, serious, and often adult litrpg books this series has locked its place in my heart, and reinforces that place with each book.

Another fun antventure!

This is definitely one of my favorite series and this book was another excellent edition to the story as a whole. The combination of world building, humor and intense battle/struggle is fantastic! I am looking forward to the next installment!

reading this book was a pleasure of its own. While Anthony did little throughout the book, the focus on all other ants of the colony was extremely appreciated and shows that RinoZ knows what the kingdom-building genres should be about. Really looking forward to the next one!!

very entertaining

As usual light humor adventure while also moving along the main plot line. Great installment of Antony protecting the colony from the tier 8 demons.

Fun continuation / conclusion of the termite and demon drama from the previous book.

Best part of the book was the Tunnel Ball match. Hilarious.
