This collection of essays from Rev. Matthew C. Harrison, many of which are taken from his presidential letters in The Lutheran Witness, points to the authority of Scripture, the comfort of Christ’s resurrection and salvation, and the certainty of the Lutheran Confessions. The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison has served as assistant pastor of Village Lutheran Church, Ladue, MO since 2010 while also serving as president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). As pastor and president, he has been called to comfort and lead God’s people.

*I received this book for free suspiciously close to the call for nominations for synod president for the next triennium. My review of this book should in no way be considered either an endorsement or rejection of the author’s presidential reelection bid.*
President Harrison has always come across as a caring and pastoral leader. The essays in this book offer no exception. Each essay provides a beautiful, confident comfort stemming from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
On the other hand, there is not much that stands out in this book as a cut above the rest. Each essay, while good, is no different than the sermons you might find in any one of thousands of LC—MS churches around the country. A good many of the essays are also likely too topical to retain their relevance.
Overall, if you want a small collection of sermons to provide comfort in times of trial, this book can certainly offer that. But it is by no means a must-read collection of essays.

Pastor Harrison says it like it is!
I have read many of Pres/Pastor Harrison’s books and reread them over and over learning something new every time. I am blessed to indeed find Comfort in the Lutheran Doctrine. This book highlights that comfort through Scripture as he shares his own life experiences as a redeemed sinner through Christ our Lord and Savior. I think this is a book I will keep by my side for the rest of my time on earth. Thank you Pastor and God for your great wisdom and faith.

If you want to understand what it means to be a confessional Lutheran this is the book to read.
