This is a spicy sentient object romance. Please make sure you know what that means before you read.
We absolutely looooovvveeedddd this story. One of the top favorites of Sabrina Cross' stories. It's got such a vibe to it. Like, so relatable and also very fun. I too became addicted to the video game and I am the reader!
The FMC is a gamer girl and she's like real good, but had this terribly boyfriend. Thank the gods he's an ex now because he sounded like a real monster. This is also why we loved this book so much. Sabrina Cross touches on the misogyny found in the gamer world. The FMC's ex was one of those sexist gamer bros who is and was literally nothing without their girlfriend.
Thankfully Katie (the FMC) is single and though she's feeling a bit jaded about being a gamer she takes a chance on vintage games. The vintage video game in this story is so much fun. It's like a sim? not sure what they're called, but you create a character, and I am totally picturing an 8-bit type character. They go on dates? They have unique experiences with a handsome gentleman in the game.
Each time the game is turned on it's a new setting. It's like a choose your own adventure when it comes to responding. I forgot what that's called, but you pick how your character will respond because it's a real dude in the game the conversations are real. Miss Katie is over here getting sucked-in IRL.
I also need to say, this book was such a vibe because Katie has a bedtime and like while playing this game keeps missing it and it's so real for that. Like the next day she's hella tired for staying up like an hour or two past bedtime. Girl same!
We later find out it's Nathaniel (the MMC) who was cursed to be in this game for like YEARS. Guess what though, he can feel what happens to the controller *smirk* You know what Katie does. I would do the same thing! I will note that I did need a stick figure to be drawn of this so please go search for that on IG.
Nathaniel is such a healer. He is the perfect guy for Katie. Like, after her totally sexist ex-boyfriend Nathaniel is here to heal her and remind her why she liked to game in the first place. He shows her that men who care about you respect your wishes and boundaries.
If you're not a gamer you'll still enjoy this story. There is a small...ummm...a small call to Sabrina Cross' other sentient object book series The Cursed Matchmaker, but it isn't necessary that you hav read them. It's just if you have there's a fun plot twist with that.

This story was spicy. Unique. And it had me feeling like that one Black Mirror episode. You know the one. But I enjoyed it and loved reading about Katie’s

Katie is a devoted gamer girl but has taken a step back from what she loves due to her ex who humiliated her in front of the whole community. While at a family gathering, her sister insists that she get back into the older games she grew up loving as a means to bring her happiness back. She decides to go to a local store called Retro Whimsy to find an older system she can mask herself into for comfort. Upon entering the store, she is highly welcomed and brought forth a system known as a Square that she takes home to enjoy.
Upon putting on the game that came with the system, she discovers a mysterious man who seems to have made contact with her, even though she deemed it impossible. I mean, it’s just a video game right? Of course not. Turns out Nathaniel had been punished to remain stuck in the game by a hateful ex and the more Katie spends time on the game, the closer the two become. Even intimacy starts to feel more real the more they connect.
When the spice hits, and let me tell you, if you have ever read anything by Cross before then you know the spice hits you HARD. This is not your normal smut scene. She literally fucks a controller that grows a cock from a man that’s stuck inside a video game. The pleasure. The descriptions. Everything you read makes you feel like you’re witnessing this act like you were in the room with Katie herself. But it’s what happens after the act that is like a Cinderella story in the smuttiest way possible.
Turns out, Retro Whimsy is a little store with its own little secrets stored inside. The epilogue teases maybe another continuation for the store and I am here for it. Katie and Nathaniel is a love story found by pure luck… and a new friend. Absolutely a great opener for the new year.

I'll admit, I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when I applied to read my first sentient romance, but I was pleasantly surprised!!
The story follows a recently jilted/broken-up Katie, who's looking to reignite her passion for gaming and buys a retro game that acts as kind of a dating simulator/otome type game. Through this, she meets Nathaniel, a dashing redhead who she searches for in every map.
I loved Katie and Nathaniel, and honestly, Nathaniel's game is something I think I would want to play XD Katie's backstory was fully fleshed, and I kind of wish we got a little scene where she can rub her new beginning into Sean's face, maybe like a standoff with Nathaniel, but I loved that she regained her love for gaming. I was a bit confused about the whole 'traditional family' dynamic - I don't think that was really necessary since we already had the main plot issue with Sean, but I loved Aubry and Addy!
Nathaniel was suave, gentlemanly, and god his confession? I was sold on him! when the controller shifted and became… well, you know what 😉I was stunned and had to re-read it several times to make sure I was reading it correctly XD I wanted to know what Nathaniel actually did to get stuck in a video game, but I liked the simplicity of his character!
This is an insta-love/lust type story, but I enjoyed it because it felt authentic! Cross really managed to create a couple I could root for in a short read and I really hope we get cameos of Katie and Nathaniel! I wish we'd gotten more of the 'sentient romance' type, because while this was technically a sentient object romance (like, I guess with the controller), it also didn't exactly feel like it, if that makes sense?
Overall, I enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing if Cross expands this universe! The epilogue has me invested!

The male main character starts off trapped inside a video game, and before any romance can even begin, he has two major hurdles to overcome: convincing the female main character that he’s real and not just part of the game, and figuring out how to escape the digital world he’s stuck in.
Even after he’s finally out, the story doesn’t take the easy route. The emotional stakes remain high, as she still struggles to believe that his feelings for her are real and not just a continuation of the game’s illusion. That added layer of doubt makes the romance feel more grounded and emotionally engaging.
The concept is fresh, the plot is inventive, and the story never feels stale. It’s a fun, fast-paced read that balances paranormal elements with a heartfelt romance. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to readers looking for something a little different in the paranormal romance genre.

This book leans fully into quirky fun. The sentient video game setup is playful, a little witchy, and easy to roll with. Katie is likable and grounded, and Nathaniel is charming, flirty, and very enthusiastic about his feelings. Their dynamic carries the story, with plenty of banter and a light, steamy edge that fits the shorter length.
This was a quick, enjoyable read that delivered on its premise. Absolutely fun if you are in the mood for something a little odd, cozy, and spicy without getting heavy.

One of the characters is different and she finds herself seeking him out every time she turns on the system.
There’s consensual inanimate object spice and that leads to consensual people spice. Joycons vibrate, and this one vibrates more than most and has other special features. Katie helps Nathaniel find his happy place and his happy-ever-after.
This story made me happy.

Instead of wallowing in sorrow, she goes to buy a retro gaming system, Square, wanting to get back her love for gaming. The console comes with a bootlegged dating simulator, where she keeps meeting Nathaniel, one of the characters to choose from. Losing her sense of time multiple times while having conversations with him, she finds out that he has been actually cursed by her ex-girlfriend ten years ago.
Though this story is a short novella, the length of it is perfect and doesn’t feel too hurried. The connection between the main characters can be felt through the story and I was smiling all the time while reading.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I wanted to get more of Katie’s story to flush out her love of video games and her streaming career. It felt like Nathaniel and Katie’s romance was rushed but I appreciated the realism of Katie’s struggles in gaming reflecting real world struggles. I would be interested in reading further stories in this series as the teaser at the end of this story was very intriguing.

Katie and Nathaniel's story, which starts out as a kind of sentient object romance, was interesting and sweet. I liked both MCs as well as the writing style and the humor. The spice was pretty hot too!
The epilogue hinted at some cool worldbuilding and an overarching story/connection — which really made me curious. I'll be reading more of Sabrina Cross's work for sure.

This is such a cute, slightly weird, and low angst romance. I loved Nathaniel and Katie meeting. I played those kinda games growing up and dreamed of him becoming real. Though I don't think I ever thought of playing with the joystick like that 😆 but we have all had a thought about them controller vibrations 🤭
And Sabrina dropped that little easter eggs tying her books together. 🤌

Sabrina has done it again!!!! She’s the queen of making spicy, sentient object romance mixed with lots of feels!! Game Girl is truly one of my absolute favorite books Sabrina has written. Our two main characters are both incredibly lonely and have been left by terrible exes. When Katie goes looking for some old games to help bring her spark back, she gets a whole fire!🤭 I loved seeing Katie get lost in her game from Retro Whimsy and learn to love again. Our MMC Nathaniel is desperate for any type of company. He’s a thunder storm full of sunshine. He deserves the world honestly! I hope to see Katie and Nathaniel around the Retro Whimsy world again!

This book opens by making you feel for Katie, then quickly shifts into rooting for her to play the game and get the guy. It’s a quick read that kept me hooked the entire time, and let me tell you... Katie and Nathaniel are hot together! Their chemistry sizzles on the page in every scene, making it impossible not to grin.
The MCs' story is great, but can I just say, Retro Whimsy feels like the kind of shop I’d happily wander into and let the sisters talk me into buying something I didn’t know I needed.

This was my first sentient object romance, and I went in genuinely unsure of what I was getting myself into. What followed was a fun, spicy, and surprisingly witchy wild

As a gamer myself, I liked this short novella. I did have to laugh at the situation that Nathaniel found himself in being a gamer himself. It is very easy to neglect all reality when playing a game. I know I will sit down to play and then look at the clock, only to find that hours have gone by.
There was a nice lead up to the "Big Bang" moment between Katie and Nathaniel. Although, I got to say that that when it happened that was one steamy scene. Katie and Nathaniel scored the top score with their hook up. I will be going back and checking out the prior novellas in this series.

The first i've read of this series and the sentient object genre in general. I didn't feel lost and i'm interested in reading more of this world. Definitely a short read (can be done on a lunch break) but a lot is packed in. I enjoyed the family dynamics between the FMC and her cousins, the mystery of the retro shop, and the relationship between the FMC and MMC. My only criticism is i would've liked even more. :)

Game Girl is a super quick read about an ex-streamer woman who is in the dumps after a bad breakup who is looking for a way to rekindle her love of gaming, off-line. She is immediately drawn to a character in her retro game she plays, who just so happens to be a very sweet, very real guy trapped in the video game!
Steaming, but more-so sweet, Game Girl is a good read for those who love gaming (retro games especially) & romance!
