She married him to stay in the country. She didn’t expect him to feel like home.
She married him to stay in the country. She didn’t expect him to feel like home.
Sarah Stone never meant to marry a hockey player.
She doesn’t even like hockey—too loud, too violent. But when her visa runs out and going home isn’t an option, marrying one of her brother’s teammates becomes the fastest way to stay in the country.
Carter Williamson is boyishly handsome, charming, and exactly the kind of man who makes a temporary marriage feel dangerous in all the wrong (right?) ways. He respects the rules, takes the pretending seriously, and somehow manages to make her feel safer than she has in years.
Which is inconvenient because he's also determined to keep things strictly business.
Or so he says. Something about the way he looks at her makes Sarah think he’s struggling as much as she is to remember their marriage is fake.
But then a crisis on the ice sends them both into a tailspin, and Carter and Sarah have to decide if the fragile life they’ve built together is one they want to fight for.
This was supposed to be paperwork. Not feelings.
Definitely not love.
Could've Fooled Me is a marriage of convenience closed-door hockey romance with chemistry, tension, and steamy kisses...but ONLY kisses on the page.
Jenny Proctor is an award-winning author of more than fourteen romantic comedies and an Amazon bestseller. She began her career in publishing in 2013; her writing has been a constant since then, but she's also spent time as the owner and managing editor of Midnight Owl Editors and the chair of the Storymakers Conference. Wired for relationships, Jenny loves public speaking, teaching, and building lasting connections.
Jenny was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina, a place she considers one of the loveliest on earth. She loves to hike with her family and spend time outdoors, but she also adores lounging around her home, reading great books or watching great movies and, when she’s lucky, eating delicious food she doesn’t have to prepare herself.
“At least when it comes to Carter, it’s probably good I’m about to leave. There are too many reasons why I can’t like him, and I’m pretty sure staying would make me forget what all of them are.”
Oh my gosh! I loved this book so much and couldn’t put it down! Sarah is going to have to go back to Canada if she can’t get a visa soon. When Sarah’s older brother, Miles, approaches his hockey teammate Carter with a solution to the problem, Carter is caught off guard and Sarah is embarrassed! But, what if, just maybe, it might work…..
These two had so much chemistry from their initial meeting, to their wedding, to the end! I just loved their connection! I loved their rules—that were obviously made to be broken! I loved that Carter was so protective of Sarah and how he supported her, even when she struggled to do the same in return. I loved Theo and their dynamic as twin brothers, as well as Miles, Anna, and the girls and how they added to the story! Okay, so I loved everything!
Favorite quotes:
“I liked talking to Carter. And I won’t even begin to pretend I don’t find him attractive. He’s legitimately a level of sexy I’ve never experienced before.”
“Oh, my gosh, this is perfect,” Anna says. “Honestly, the two of you have really great chemistry. There’s no way people won’t believe this is real.” I immediately drop my hands and take a step back, Anna’s words serving as a stark reminder that it isn’t real. It’s not that I forgot. With Anna snapping photos, it would be impossible to forget. But I’m not sure I expected to enjoy it so much. To enjoy him so much.”
“I’d like to think it will keep being fun. But after spending half an hour touching him, hugging him, feeling his strong arms wrapped around my body, I’m all too aware of how quickly this whole plan could go sideways.”
Any time someone says that a book is marriage of convenience… I’m hooked. They’re my favorite. And this one… might be the sweetest one of all time.
Carter brings with him the strength of a hockey player, he’s rough, and he’s tough, in the ice. But off the ice… he’s the epitome of the perfect MMC. He’s a cinnamon roll, but also a golden retriever. He’s gentle, caring, and sweet. The moment he held Fiona… SWOON!!!
Sarah is an amazing aunt. And artist. And clearly an amazing wife. I adored the fact they the chemistry, connection, and attraction between her and Carter was there from the beginning. So many times in an MOC it takes a while for that connection to grow, but Sarah and Carter had that instant connection that had me cheering them on, and not wanting to put the book down!
I loved that although Sarah and Carter were swoony and so likable they also had flaws. They were real and relatable!
A few warnings for this book: mentions of past physical abuse to a side character, mentions of past postpartum depression, mentioned of past parental death, and for my Christian readers there is a fairly prominent side character living life alternate to God’s design.
Thank you so much to the Emily’s and to Jenny for my ARC copy!
Once again, Jenny has knocked it out of the park! I loved this one so much. 🥹 The romance was SWOONY—Carter and Sarah seriously had such perfect chemistry. There was also so much depth to both of them and the marriage of convenience was well done.
What starts as a simple marriage of convenience quickly turns into something neither of them expected….falling in love for real.
Jenny Proctor is one of my favorite romance authors, and Could’ve Fooled Me is such a fun and heartfelt start to her new Georgia Jaguars series.
The story follows Sarah, the sister of Miles, one of the Jaguars’ starters. Sarah is an artist and teacher, but as a Canadian citizen she’s facing the reality of having to leave the U.S. Miles comes up with what seems like the perfect solution: ask one of his teammates to enter into a marriage of convenience with her. Carter ends up being the lucky guy, and from the very beginning, the sparks between Carter and Sarah are impossible to ignore.
I was completely drawn into this story because Sarah is so fun and spunky. She’s a wonderful sister and aunt, and her personality made her such an easy character to root for. I especially loved how natural her relationship with Carter felt. Their connection develops so organically as they get to know each other, and Jenny Proctor really captures the sweetness and vulnerability of falling in love.
I was also really happy to see LGBTQ representation in a side character. At first Carter is jealous of Sarah’s best friend Emerson, only to later find out he’s gay. It honestly means a lot to me when authors acknowledge that LGBTQ people exist in their worlds. Too often books completely ignore that reality. As someone who loves closed-door / clean / fade-to-black romance, I’m especially grateful for the way Jenny Proctor writes.
Most of all, I believed Carter and Sarah’s love story. Jenny Proctor has such a gift for writing romance that feels genuine and emotionally satisfying. I will definitely be reading everything in this series!
Tropes: • Marriage of convenience • Forced proximity • Teammate’s sister • Hockey romance • No third-act breakup • Mental health representation • Off-page previous child abuse
Okay, I loved this cosy marriage of convenience romance! It had a unique take that felt believable. Both Carter and Sarah resisted the idea of a marriage of convenience at first, but their falling in love felt inevitable and natural.
Carter (and his twin brother, Theo) were first introduced in "When Alec Met Evie" as young additions to the Appies, a fictional AHL hockey team. Now they're a bit older and playing for the Jaguars in the NHL. Sarah is the team captain's younger sister, whose visa is running out. There are several reasons why moving back to Canada would not be great for her or her family, but she's yet to find a solution. When she and Carter first meet they have an instant connection, but neither pursues it because they both know she won't be in town for much longer. Until her brother suggests a marriage of convenience...
It was swoony how well Carter looked after Sarah. He was the greenest green flag. He believed in her, supported her artistic endeavours, didn't push past her boundaries (but that kiss when Carter comes back into the house!).
I loved the penny backstory and how Sarah utilised it near the end of the book.
Theo, Carter's twin brother, was such a fun character to have in this book, with his teasing and ribbing. While I look forward to reading his book, I'll always prefer Carter the gentleman.
What you'll find in this book: *marriage of convenience *artist FMC *green flag MMC *"my wife" *found family *only one bed *teammate's sister *no third-act breakup
Content warning: (from author's note) This book contains several characters who have lost loved ones to cancer or a car accident. There are also mentions of child abuse (in the past), and the impact it has on adult lives as well as conversations about mental health and panic attacks. There is a secondary character who has a healthy pregnancy and an uncomplicated delivery of a baby. Romance level: 5/7 (passionate kisses, moan mentioned, closed-door intimacy implied between a married couple)
Thank you to Jenny Proctor and the Emilys for the advance review copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Ahh! This book was just so good!! I love Jenny Proctor’s books and I was so excited to read this one! Could’ve Fooled Me is the first book in her new series, Georgia Jaguars Hockey series. But it features characters that you met in When Alec Met Evie! Carter definitely needed his own book and it was so fun to get to know him! I loved both Carter and Sarah! They were perfect together and had an easy connection. THey were both likable characters and I was rooting for them as they tried to find themselves. They weren’t looking for love but they found it in each other. They were helping each other out and found themselves in love before they knew it. I loved getting to see Carter more fleshed out. It was sweet how he could be himself around Sarah. She saw him as his own person and always encouraged him. He was figuring out how to be his own unique person. Sarah had been through a lot and was just trying to stay close to her family. It was cool to see her find her voice. I love how Carter always encouraged her. The romance was so sweet. They pushed each other in the right manner but were ultimately just there for each other. I loved the side characters. Miles was just trying to be a good brother but he definitely got it wrong at times. I loved Theo too and I am excited to read his book. This was such a great start to a new series! And I am so excited to read the books to come. I didn’t want to put this book down! I loved the characters and the story. I would totally recommend this book. Could’ve Fooled Me is a closed door romantic comedy. It has passionate kisses, a fade to black implied (this is a marriage of convenience), and some LGBT characters.
Book Highlights: Hockey romance Family themes She’s an artist Twin brothers Marriage of convenience They encourage each other

🛑Read on with caution; review may contain spoilers🛑
Could’ve Fooled Me, the first book in Jenny Proctor’s newest series, was such a sweet and heartfelt start, and honestly reminded me why I love her writing so much.
This marriage-of-convenience romance follows Carter (one of the twins we loved in When Alec Met Evie) and Sarah, his captain’s younger sister, and it completely delivered on both emotion and chemistry. Proctor truly has a gift for writing MMCs who perfectly complement her FMCs, and Carter might be one of my favorites. He’s such a sweetheart, not just to Sarah, but to everyone around him, and his quiet, genuine goodness made him incredibly easy to love. Even with his hesitation about bending the rules, he still steps up to marry Sarah so she can stay in the U.S., which says so much about his character.
I absolutely loved how natural their chemistry felt. Nothing was forced. Their relationship developed so easily, and every interaction between them felt warm, soft, and real.
What really stood out to me, though, was how delicately Proctor handled Sarah’s trauma. Her fears, shaped by the conflict she witnessed growing up, were portrayed with so much care and nuance. Watching her slowly heal, with the support of the people around her and Carter’s steady, calming presence, was both moving and beautifully done.
Overall, this was such a tender, romantic read with depth, heart, and a truly lovable couple. I’m already so excited for the rest of this series! 💕
The best possible start to a new hockey romance series that I’m sure will be a favorite!!
Thank you partner, Booked with the Emilys, and the author, Jenny Proctor, for a gifted e-arc of this book. All opinions are my own!
Short Synopsis: Sarah has enjoyed her time in Atlanta for school and the wonderful experiences she’s had working towards her career as an artist and the bonus of time spent near her family. The only problem? Her visa is expiring and she’ll be leaving for Canada, a place she hasn’t been since she was a child. Enter: Carter. Her brother’s pro-hockey teammate and one of the dreamiest men Sarah has met. Could her brother’s plan for a marriage of convenience between Sarah and Carter keep her in the States?
My Thoughts: I was drawn into these characters from the very first page and never wanted this story to end! Jenny has such a knack for sucking you into her stories and keeping them both intriguing and inviting! This combination makes you want to binge read her books - and I devoured this in one day!
Carter is the ultimate swoony book boyfriend who is caring, funny, empathetic, and truly has a heart of gold. His protective nature for Sarah never seemed overbearing. Plus, he plays hockey and cares deeply about his family. Need I say more? I loved every moment that he and Sarah were together and also loved seeing Sarah grow into her own throughout the story!
I hope to see a peek at their life together in the next book in this series and I absolutely cannot wait to read it!
Read this if you like: 🏒 Marriage of convenience 🏒 Forced proximity 🏒 Teammate’s sister 🏒 Hockey
Sarah is trying to stay in Georgia but is not getting her visa as fast as she wants. Her brother asks Carter to marry Sarah because desperate to help his wife from facing postpartum depression again and his sister from facing their abusive father in Canada. Carter and Sarah come to the decision that marriage is worth the risk of everything. As they navigate newlywed life, their chemistry turns into very real feelings.
Favorite parts -Carter- how nice he was to everyone he interacted with. Also how respectful he was of Sarah and her boundaries. -Sarah’s painting for Carter -The first night they met and the chemistry between them. -Sarah’s brother Miles and how much he had to grow -how they found the loopholes to their rules or ignored them at times.
Favorite Quotes “Hey, there’s a yawn,” Carter says. “My goal to bore you is working.” I smile into my pillow. I would fight sleep all night if it meant getting to talk to him.
My situation isn’t any different now than it was five minutes ago, when I was talking about it with my brother. But something about having Carter beside me makes the whole thing feel easier. Not like everything is solved, but at least like I can breathe again. And for right now, that has to be enough.
maybe knowing we love each other is enough. Love is what makes you willing to put in the work. I’ve never been so certain that I’m willing—that a life with Carter is exactly what I want.
I totally binge read this! I’m a huge fan of marriage of convenience stories, and I knew right from the beginning I was going to be hooked on these two.
I first met Carter and Theo in When Alec Met Evie, so I was excited to see how they were doing. And can I just say, Carter is an amazing man. Sarah hit the jackpot with him, and Miles made a great choice for his sister.
When Sarah is at risk of having to return to Canada because her visa is expiring, her brother Miles suggests that if she marries a teammate she might be able to stay. Enter Carter. Sarah and Carter had met before, and sparks definitely flew, but with her about to leave, neither expected a second chance to get to know each other, let alone get married! Now the question is can they tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake? And who is going to break their rules first?!
You all, the chemistry between these two was through the roof from the start, so I was ready to go along for the ride. Such a sweet story, and seriously, Carter is the best. I can’t wait for Theo’s story next. He’s a tough one, so that should be interesting!
I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.
***Just a heads up: Steamy kisses, fade to black with married couple, innuendo, gay side character, past child abuse, past family death.
"That's the thing, Miles. She doesn't need my protection. Or yours. Not anymore. She's stronger than you're giving her credit for. All she needs is for you to believe her when she tells you she's good enough to do things her way."
"I've already kissed her enough to know that if I let myself have her because I want her, there's no coming back from that. I'll be all in-all the way."
"I have never been kissed like this. Even my other kisses with him pale in comparison. There is nothing careful about this kiss. Nothing scripted. Nothing that makes it fit for public consumption. This is real and raw and desperate and perfect."
I think this is my new favorite by Jenny Proctor! It was fabulous - the characters, themes, chemistry, slow burn, humor....everything. Marriage of convenience is a favorite trope and Jenny wrote it perfectly. And Carter! New favorite book boyfriend. He was so attentive and caring with everyone, but she brought out new levels of tenderness and protective instincts.
I loved that the characters already felt attraction for each other, the marriage simply sped up their timeline a little. And while they took things slow and set some rules to protect themselves, they were also honest with themselves and with each other about their feelings. I appreciated Sarah's strength and determination to go after her dreams the way she wanted, and despite her brothers well-intentioned "bullying" she was firm in her boundaries. And I LOVED how Carter fought for her while recognizing her strength and letting her stand on her own two feet, stepping in or stepping back as she needed.
The chemistry, banter, tenderness and swoon were perfection! And I loved the team relationships and set up for the next book, a second-chance romance with Carter's brother. I think this will be a new favorite series of Jenny's! Can't wait.
A hockey romance with a marriage of convenience? Yes, please! We first were introduced to Carter and Theo in When Alec Met Evie, so it was fun to get to know these NHL playing twin brothers better. (This is the start of a new series, so while those who have read that book might appreciate seeing them again, it is not necessary to read it to enjoy this one.) Carter is getting his chance at romance first with a marriage of convenience with the sister of the team's captain, Sarah, to help her be able to stay in the country. But even before agreeing to this arrangement, the chemistry between these two was evident. Carter was such a good book boyfriend. He was so supportive of Sarah, believing in her art and just the way he was so understanding with her, even without knowing her full story... and what an emotional story it turned out to be. This story surprised me with some heartbreaking moments, but that tenderness and vulnerability only made me love them that much more. And while I can't give anything away, this story left me very excited to see what was going to happen next in the series. I cannot wait for Theo's story!
Could've Fooled Me is a closed-door romance with fade to black (within marriage and not-detailed), some innuendo and minimal minor language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Who doesn’t love a cute hockey romance? In this story we follow Sarah, a Canadian native who has been living in Georgia and attending school for the last several years. Her brother Miles plays for the Jaguars hockey team, and she enjoys helping him and her sister-in-law with the kids when she isn’t working on her career as an artist. With her visa almost up, Miles concocts a plan to have her marry his sweetheart teammate Carter so she can stay until another visa is approved. Sarah and Carter already have chemistry, and putting a ring on it only intensifies those feelings.
I thought Carter was the sweetest! He never missed an opportunity to be romantic and tell Sarah she is beautiful and a talented artist. He was always there for her, and even setup an art studio in his new house.
Sarah was the perfect FMC. She may spell her name wrong (ha-ha), but she only has eyes for Carter. She is a wonderful sister and aunt to her nieces. I love that despite her brother not believing in her ability to become a professional artist, she still believes in herself.
I loved all the side characters, but I simply cannot wait until we have Theo and Rebecca’s story. I think it’s going to rip my heart open but be a truly beautiful story.
*An ARC was received in exchange for an honest review.
Jenny Proctor has blessed us with another AMAZING hockey romcom! Wow, I just really love her books so much!
Jenny Proctor always brings the swoon and I promise you will feel it in spades in this book!
Carter is the SWEETEST and I couldn’t get over how incredibly kind and thoughtful he was. Luckily, neither can Sarah! These two were the cutest together and their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS!
I loved how naturally their story flowed and how believable the marriage of convenience was. There were some fun little unique spins on the trope that I really enjoyed.
I loved all the hockey details, because I’m becoming more of a hockey fan and I actually understood what they were talking about.
Sarah is a painter and I loved the way her art was described. I am dying to actually see her paintings now!
I absolutely adored this first book of the Georgia Jaguars hockey series. It felt familiar because we met the MMC in Jenny’s last book of the Appies Hockey series, When Alec Met Evie (which I LOVED). But this book can easily stand alone. I cannot wait for Carter’s twin brother, Theo’s story! It has been set up beautifully and I know it will be amazing!
🔥Romance: Closed Door (implied intimacy between a married couple)
I received an advance copy from the author for review.
This was delightful! Contemporary marriage of convenience is a tough sell for me and while it makes me twitchy to think about, this is probably the best set up there could be for the premise.
Carter is the greenest of green flags and made for a wonderful lead. He was so thoughtful and attentive to details. He was first introduced as a side character in When Alec Met Evie, and while this book completely stands alone, it was really neat to have that background and added meaning and to see where he's at several years after that book. I love how the book explored his twin relationship and the complexities of really loving your sibling and wanting to be so close to them but also wanting to be seen as an individual.
I love how the author brings really depth to her stories and so even though they are "romcoms" it's not all about silly antics and has a lot of heart and real emotions in the story. This one even made me cry.
The romance was swoony, soft, and satisfying. It wonderful to see two people come together and become each other's soft place to land.
There are hints to the next book included in this one and I will definitely be continuing the series!
I think this is one of the best books Jenny Proctor has written. When she gave us a taste of the first chapter in her emails I was TORTURED thinking of how long I would have to wait to read this book. Sarah and Carter are....oh my words cannot describe how amazing they are together!! Their chemistry literally jumps off the page! Carter is absolutely the man I imagined he would be when he grew up more (from When Alec Met Evie). I loved the tie in to the Appies but also something completely new. I am absolutely in love with the Jaguars team 😍 this book will have you not wanting to do anything else except read it! Seriously, be prepared to stay up until 3 in the morning. I think that Jenny did amazing with Sarah and Miles past, giving it the respect and grace it deserves. I can also feel Jenny's own love for hockey in the book - which mirrors my own and I LOVE SO MUCH! I really appreciated it! I also really enjoyed the approach Jenny took with the marriage of convenience! It is unlike any other book I've read and it felt so refreshing and new!! You'll fall head over heels in love with Carter and Sarah.
If Jenny Proctor writes it, I want to read it and I will love it! I have been anticipating the release of Could've Fooled Me, so when I received the advanced copy via NetGalley, the author, and publisher, I was so giddy to dive in. And, oh, it does not disappoint!
Carter is so genuinely sweet and caring! I loved that this series included some of our favorites from the Appies Series. Tropes that were done so well! Marriage of convenience, Hockey romance, Teammate’s sister, Forced proximity, Mental health representation, and No third-act breakup.
Sarah is the little sister of Carter's team captain, Miles. She has just graduated and looking for a job as an artist, but her student visa is expiring so Miles is desperate to find a way for her to stay in Georgia. Carter and Sarah have instant chemistry, but can they explore those feelings and be involved with a marriage of connivence? Carter initially declines marrying Sarah, but then his twin brother Theo convinces him he can't let her marry anyone else. From there, the story is so sweet as is their budding relationship. Maybe they've done this whole relationship backwards, but it's a guaranteed HEA!
Long after I finished reading this book, i am still thinking about it and am still so giddy. It’s definitely 4.5 stars
Thank you to Booked with the Emily's and Jenny Proctor for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
I loved everything about this book, the romance, the hockey elements, and the found family. It just checked all the boxes for me.
I loved reading Sarah and Carter's story; it was a breath of fresh air. Their love was a steady growth throughout the book. We see Sarah and Carter go from complete strangers, brought together by unique circumstances, to a tentative friendship.
I loved watching them grow closer, consistently supporting and encouraging one another. They just worked so well together. Sarah is determined and kind, and I love how family-oriented she is. Carter is the whole package, he is so supportive, respectful, and just genuine.
I completely enjoyed my time with this book, I was engrossed from start to finish. Highly recommend if you need a quick read that still has depth and heart.
Jenny Proctor is an auto-read author for me. Each and every one of her books is so amazing! I love the way her characters jump off the pages, and seem like real people. Her books are always so well done.
I loved Sarah. She's an artist, but she's got a small problem. Her Visa is about to run out and she'll be sent back to Canada, just when her brother's family needs her the most. I thought it was so funny how her brother, Miles, thought up the idea for one of his teammates to marry Sarah and even set the whole plan into motion without her knowing.
Carter is a hockey player, a twin, and just a great guy. He's the kind of guy who is always taking care of someone around him. I loved the way Carter and Sarah had chemistry from their very first meeting. They just felt like they fit together, to the reader. So when they decide to go ahead and get married, the reader knows that it won't be fake for long.
This book had it all. I love the hockey parts. It made me laugh. It made me cry. I gave a happy sigh when I finished. You NEED to read it!
Sarah is preparing to return to Canada now that she’s finished school and run out of options to stay in the states with her brother Miles and his family. In a desperate attempt to keep Sarah from having to leave Miles enlists the help of his teammate, Carter. Sarah and Carter have only met a couple times, but sparks were sizzling between them. Can a marriage of convenience really be all that bad?
What I loved: 🎨Carter- he is so thoughtful and caring towards everyone 🎨Sarah- she’s bold, kind, and all about her family 🎨Sparks are flying in this story! 🎨The dynamics between Carter and his twin Theo 🎨All the hockey bros 🎨Sarah and Anna’s relationship as friends and in-laws 🎨All the layers to this story. There’s so many moving parts and I loved how it all came together
This was such an adorable read. I would call this a fade to black in the end. Mostly kisses throughout the story. I enjoyed the level of intensity this book had. It was funny, but also some serious events and past trauma are covered. It was all done very well. I loved the dynamics between the characters and lots of emotions throughout. Definitely one you will want to add to your book shelf!
Jenny Proctor is a new to me author and I am so glad to see there is plenty of other books of hers for me to read.
Our MCs are Sarah an artist with her visa about to run out, and Carter a NHL player on Sarah’s brothers’ team.
Miles (FMCs older brother) decided the best way for her to stay in the country is to marry one of his teammates. He asks Carter before consulting Sarah. I love that both MCs first thought Miles’s marriage scheme was dishonest and refused initially.
After agreeing to the marriage, the story shows how both MCs grow to love each other and try their best to fight against their chemistry. Carter is such a considerate MC and always there to support Sarah.
Whilst there were some background trauma and genuine issues mentioned, I found this a mostly light-hearted read.
Closed door, fake dating, marriage of convenience, house rules, hockey, brother’s teammate
Can’t wait to read more in this series
Thanks to Netgalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op
So I ate this book up!! 14 hours (that included sleep!) and oh my gosh did I love it! I’m a sucker for a hockey romance but throw in a marriage of convenience and a brother’s teammate situation and you s got yourself a winner. Every single character (not just the MCs) was beautifully thought out and had such depth to them that I could picture them all perfectly in my mind. I am a girl who usually loves a bit of spice with her books but the romance and writing was so good with this one that I didn’t even notice it was missing. The only thing I will say is that the pacing did seem slightly off to me. For a marriage of convenience they take an awfully long time to actually get down the aisle, and then the last few chapters of the book just seemed a bit more rushed than I felt they needed to be. But overall it was such a good book that I can look past that and honestly say I can’t wait to read the next one.
What You’ll Find: 💍Marriage of convenience 🏒Forced proximity 💍Teammate’s sister 🏒Hockey
Could've Fooled Me is a marriage of convenience closed-door hockey romance with chemistry, tension, and steamy kisses...but ONLY kisses on the page.
Thank you, Partners @bookedwiththeemilys and @jennyproctorbooks for this #gifted arc!
Carter is the cute, quiet and nice hockey twin, whereas Sarah is his hockey captain’s younger sister. When they first met there were definitely sparks and mutual attraction. Sarah is newly graduated and must get the hardest work visa to stay or she will be sent back to Canada. Miles her older brother had the idea for Carter to marry her, so she can stay, help with Anna’s pp and continue to paint. But neither Carter nor Sarah thought they would actually fall for each other. This is such a cute rom-com. Carter is so sweetly protective and puts Sarah first. He’s a hockey knight in shining armor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5.
This is the proposal meets hockey romance and I was HERE 👏 FOR 👏 IT 😍 Wow I absolutely fell in love with Sarah and Carter from the very first pages and I had a blast watching the pair fall in love in this marriage of convenience romance. I love how the author can seamless balance meaningful connection with silly and sweet moments that accompany falling in love 🥰
This novel is a closed door, low spice romance. The story is told from dual POV, which is my favorite format for a romance because I love hearing the internal thoughts of the main characters. Given this is a hockey romance there is an amazing sense of found family in the form of Carter's amazing teammates. From group texts to heartfelt conversations I just love this genuine sense of community and family.
Thank you Booked with the Emily's and Jenny Proctor for the opportunity to read this novel in advance of the release date ❤️ This is the start of a new series I can't wait to keep reading!
Okay, here goes. I was so excited when I learned that Jenny Proctor was going to be publishing not only another book, but a new hockey series! And boy was it a wonderful start!
Sarah and Carter are just so stinking cute together. Their chemistry is undeniable, their respect of one another is wonderful, and their support of each other is so sweet.
Carter - well, he is just perfection on the page!
Also, Carter's twin brother, Theo, is a joy. A tough exterior, but a softie at heart, Theo brings not only comic relief to the story, but soul.
There is a big emphasis on family, both Carter's and Sarah's. It was truly special to read.
I also like how mental health was handled in the story.
I'm looking forward to book 2!
*Thank you to Booked With The Emilys and the author for the complimentary digital ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Usually, marriage of convenience/fake dating isn't one of my favorite tropes, but this book was absolutely perfect. I was not expecting to love it as much as I did. This book was so adorable from the moment it started. Sarah and Carter were so so perfect for each other. I would totally read a second book of theirs. I also love the Theo and Rebecca storyline and will definitely be reading their book in the future. In addition, I think that everyone's trauma was portrayed so nicely. Overall, this book was just so amazing and I will always be recommending this.
I also have to note that this gets even more bonus points for the Publix mention at the beginning. As someone from Florida, Publix will always be superior to me and it was so cool to see it mentioned in a book, which I've never seen before.
I am so happy to see Carter from the Appies get his own story!!!!
When Jenny announced this book, I was over the moon! I knew it was going to be a great one...and I was right!
I loved Carter in Alec's book in the Appies series. He is such a caring, sweet guy and I loved that he was the first MMC for this new series. Every single move he made throughout this entire book was made with love for the people around him, especially for Sarah.
Sarah was such a sweet and determined MFC! I loved how she stuck to her plan, kept pursuing her art the way she wanted to and was willing to grow and change as her relationship with Carter deepened.
I also loved the Jaguar team! I cannot wait for more books in this series! Thanks Jenny for a new hockey team to LOVE!!!!
This book felt like a warm hug. A fresh take on a marriage-of-convenience trope—with hockey added in? Sold! I have to admit, I was hooked from the very beginning. The friendship Carter and Sarah build is absolutely adorable, and I couldn’t pull myself away. The found-family relationships, Sarah’s artistic gift, and Carter’s steady presence set the stage for this delightful contemporary romance.
Favorite moments: * Cupcake Pantry * Charlie’s glasses * Photo stories * The engagement * Carters thoughtfulness on EVERYTHING * All The tension * Nine Days Kiss 🔥 * Carter and Theo’s relationship * Sarah’s painting to Carter 💋Fade to Black 🤬none *gay side character. Few innuendos. Mention of Postpartum depression struggles. Mention of multiple family members death by cancer.
Could've Fooled Me by Jenny Proctor is a low-spice hockey romance, featuring fake dating and marriage of convenience tropes. I'm at the point where whatever Jenny Proctor writes, I'll read it. I'm also falling in love with hockey romance, given that hockey is not played in my country at all. I loved the characters! It was good to see Theo and Carter who were minor characters in the last book of the Appies Hockey series. Carter is so sweet, the best really and Theo has also grown. Sarah is also a likeable character, as well as the other side characters. I enjoyed the romantic buildup and the sweet ending. A lovely read. ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op.
