Rainbow Over the Bayou: Jim Crow Through the Eyes of a White Girl

Rate this book
Have you ever looked back on your childhood and realized your world carried so much more than you saw at the time? This is the heart of Rainbow Over the Jim Crow Through the Eyes of a White Girl-a historical fiction inspired by the author's Louisiana upbringing and told through dual timelines of 1960 and the present day. You will be transported to Southern Louisiana, where the tranquil beauty of the bayou contrasts with the horrific injustices of Jim Crow, whose echoes still reverberate today.

In this dark chapter of our nation's history, God's hand brings together two opposite Mimi, a young white girl, and Willa Mae, the beloved Black maid who works for her family. Through the eyes of a child-now remembered by the woman she has become-Mimi realizes there was much she saw, yet did not see.

Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, you'll be drawn into the harsh realities of segregation, yet also witness the strength of faith and the resilience of the human spirit.

This story invites you to wrestle with the echoes of America's past and discover-even amid history's shadows-God's love and light, His redeeming power, and the enduring hope of a more just and reconciled future.

This book has touched my heart for so many reasons. One, it pulls you into the dual timelines of 1960s Louisiana, where the quiet beauty of the bayou stands in stark contrast to the profound injustice of Jim Crow. That contrast lingers long after the last page.

And two, the relationship between Mimi and Willa Mae is tender, complicated, and deeply human. It reflects both the closeness and the brokenness shaped by segregation. This story does not shy away from hard truths, yet it is never without hope.Woven throughout is faith and hope. God’s presence shows up in unexpected places, reminding us that even in the darkest chapters of our history, His love and redemptive power are still at work.

This book invites us to reflect with humility and a willingness to sit with the echoes of the past while longing for a more just and reconciled future.

If you enjoy historical fiction that is thoughtful, faith-filled, and emotionally resonant, this book is well worth your time. It stayed with me…I laughed and cried, and my prayer is that we will continue to tell these stories to remember where we came from.

This is a must-read, no matter who you are.

Rainbow Over the Bayou is the story of a mature woman caring for the woman she calls her second mother, who is nearing the end of her life. Back in the place where she grew up, the main character reflects on her childhood in the segregated South during the 1960s, and readers will see her younger self slowly become aware of the ugly reality of what was happening just outside her sheltered home. Her child's eyes observe her sisters and her parents and others in the community--both white and black--and how they respond to “the way things were”. Readers' emotions will rise with theirs as the Civil Rights Movement interrupts their status quo.

Beautifully written, this book prompts readers of all backgrounds to pause and reflect on America’s past, how our present was shaped by it, and how the wounds it left have still not all healed. The theme of hope shines like a rainbow above it all from past to present, however, pointing to the God of creation whose image is reflected in all His children.

In Rainbow Over the Bayou: Jim Crow Through the Eyes of a White Girl, the author paints a vivid picture of life in the South in the 1960’s during the events of the Civil Rights Movement as she shares the story of Mimi, a young white girl, and Willa Mae, her family’s beloved black maid.

Rainbow Over the Bayou took me back to my childhood and the discrimination I also witnessed but did not understand in my own city. I appreciate how the author brought these characters to life and humanized these events most of us have only read about. I encourage you to read this well-written, life-changing book.

This is a story based on the author's memoir. It's a creative story with interesting characters and good details. The reason I give it four stars instead of five is because some of the parts are a bit preachy. I wish it was more showing instead of telling. However, overall, it's a good story.

An impressive first novel. Linda Erley beautifully weaves fact and fiction in this historical novel set in an important time in the history of our nation. Erley tells a story of growing up in the Jim Crow South with wisdom, nuance, compassion, justice, and faith.
