About the author

Joleene Naylor

Joleene Naylor is the author of the glitter-less Amaranthine vampire series, a world where vampires aren't for children. As a compliment to the novel series, she has also written several short stories, including the Vampire Morsels collection.

In her spare time, Joleene is a freelance book cover designer and for-fun photographer . She maintains several blogs full of odd ramblings, and occasionally updates her website at JoleeneNaylor.com. In what little time is left she watches anime and pins recipes and DIY, all from a crooked Victorian house in Villisca, Iowa. Between her husband and her pets, she is never lonely, and should she ever disappear one might look for her on a beach in Tahiti, sipping a tropical drink and wearing a disguise.

She currently has several books available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple and Smashwords.

This book is a collection of various short stories dealing with a wide range of subjects: from sweet love to horror, vampires to werewolves, and even other worlds.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and getting to know the many authors who contributed. There wasn't a story I didn't like.

If you enjoy fantasy/paranormal/scifi, you'll enjoy reading the tales in this book.

I have two stories in this anthology, so I didn't count them. I rated the single stories and half of them are five stars! :) The other half takes down the count, and that's why the whole anthology has only 4...
Great job, fellow inkslingers!

Short story anthologies are tough to rate. Inevitably there are first rate reads mixed in with the only okay. In this case, one DNF where I found the writing style so stiff I couldn't get past the first few pages.

Rather than dwell on the less stellar contributions, this handful of stories lifts Strange Portals well into the 'good read' category.

Not surprisingly, Joleene Naylor, (who never disappoints) has two of the four best of twenty-one shorts. My favorite is Predator , a compelling and chilling tale where a predator stalks a little girl who may not be as helpless as she seems. A close second is Verchiel a tale of a new vampire who might not be the killer he is expected to be.

Roxanne Mathews' Werewolf is a fun twist on a genre that I thought had been fully explored.

Bonnie Mutchler's In the Beginning is a tale of new made vampires, a sadistic master, desperation, unlikely loyalties and odd friendships set in the middle ages.

On the lighter side and worthy of honorable mention are two fantasy pieces, Terry Compton's YA Leprechaun's Gift and Roger Lawrence's slightly disjointed by engaging Artwork.

If you are looking for new fantasy, paranormal or horror authors and stories, this anthology provides a worthy sample.

So, I love horror and I love short stories. Give me both in one book... let's just say this is going to be a good review. Oh-and I just checked-its still Free!
Gear yourself up for some tortured tales that will have you flipping those pages rapid fire. Strange Portals has got you covered from vampires to werewolves, from pixies to leprechauns, from Santa's reindeer to Satan's limo.
Take a tunnel to a bleak future Earth where people can't breath the air anymore and are getting ready to go to Mars. Witness an Indian ghost story that begets new life. Meet a man with the gift to heal others, but the curse of having his own life diminished with each act. Many more stories await you.
Two of the authors featured in Strange Portals are Joleene Naylor and D.M. Yates. I have reviewed books by both of these writers in previous editions of What I Am Reading. In addition to having two of her short stories featured, Ms. Naylor also is the editor of this anthology.
If you love horror (and a bit of fantasy) as much as myself, then hurry up and grab your FREE copy of Strange Portals while the offer lasts. You will be glad you did.

Maybe it wasn't fair for me to read this book. I'm not a fan of horror or short stories, but my daughter has a story in the book so of course I had to read it. I also found an author whose books I want to read.
