Some revelations rewrite the rules. Others rewrite you.
Enid has come a long way in a short time. She’s on the brink of happiness, ready to step into the unknown with Ollie at her side, but when the Spirit Body makes an announcement that will rewrite the very laws of existence, it sets off shockwaves across the realms, signaling a shift in the cosmic order.
Although Enid is no stranger to death, when the Grim Reaper comes looking for her by name, she finds her time is closer than she thought. Forces have been conspiring against her, those closest to her are hiding secrets, and one devastating truth has Ollie running for the hills. When she must face a revelation she may not survive knowing, she learns the scariest part of love isn’t losing it—it’s realizing how far she’ll go to keep it alive.
The new year begins with several bangs for Enid, Ollie, Waffles, and the rest of the Shady Spirits gang— and few of the bangs come from fireworks. At midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Spirit Body announces a change that will alter the natural order of every realms. The Grim Reaper—Death himself for human souls, living or dead—arrives with a single message: Absolutely not. But it’s not only the Spirit Body he’s after. Enid, too, is an afront to the natural order. Her unknown magic and lack of control over it make her a threat, one Death decides he must eliminate. As death swings his scythe toward Enid, Ollie flees with her to the Void. Though they are alive, the New Year surprises are just beginning. The Void Kitty shares a magical revelation that leaves both Enid and Ollie stunned. The first day of their new year is utter chaos. Which is exactly what I expect from a Shady Spirits novel. As the day unfolds, Enid and Ollie face a destiny neither is is convinced they want. Secrets come out, and relationships are pushed to their limits. It all builds to a final confrontation with the Grim Reaper, and Enid will need everyone to make it out alive. Deadly Designs delivers another fast-paced plot with heartbreaking emotional blows, twists with every page turn, and a unique use of the chosen one trope. That’s all I can say without spoiling it. So much happens! The book is a clear turning point in the series. Nothing will be the same in the aftermath. Deadly Designs, along with the rest of the Shady Spirits series, is available on Amazon.
Deadly Designs leans heavily into both supernatural power struggles and the personal fallout that’s been building across the series. The Spirit Body returns as a major pressure point, doubling down on control and making it clear just how far they’re willing to go to enforce their rules. That escalation raises the stakes quickly and puts Enid in a position where there are no easy choices. The Grim’s response only adds fuel to the fire. Instead of balance, his reaction brings chaos, and Enid ends up caught between forces that are unpredictable at best and dangerous at worst. The tension here feels less controlled than in earlier books, and that shift works in the story’s favor. Alongside the external conflict, more of Enid’s family dynamics come into focus. These moments add depth and context, giving emotional weight to her decisions and showing how much of her present is tied to her past. What works well is how the story keeps blurring the lines between authority and threat. The systems that are supposed to maintain order don’t necessarily offer protection, and that imbalance continues to be one of the more compelling aspects of the series. I’ve really enjoyed this series overall, and with this book I’m now fully caught up on what’s currently out. It’s been a solid ride, and I’ll definitely be sticking around to see where it goes next. Rating 4.5 stars
March is already an exciting month for ARCs and this one definitely is the reason. Jen Bair emails me an ARC and I go: bet. So I was very excited to dive back into the Shady Spirits world yet again.
I was so excited to read about Enid and the gang again. I mean Enid herself is such a queen, but all the characters in it, make the story come alive. You can't read this story and not feel for Enid in my personal opinion. The for girl has a lot going on for her and that's no different in this book. I do feel that, at the end of the series, Enid will be needing a lot of therapy, because her life is a rollercoaster.
The most fun thing about this book is that almost all the events happen in the span of like one day. Regardless of that fact the pacing stays high and the story is fun without any dull moments. We learn a lot of new things in this book as well as revisiting old characters.
Also, big shoutout to that one Percy Jackson mention in this book. I laughed out loud while reading that.
Conclusion? Another hit from Jen Bair graced my eyeballs this month. If you're looking for a fun and light read with paranormal element, please please please consider starting the Shady Spirits series. In my personal opinion it doesn't disappoint.
I don’t know how this author does it, but she keeps me on my toes the whole time a read a book by her, and this latest is no exception. Enid and gang have major problems when the Spirit Body want to make an announcement, and no one can guess what it is, but of course, Enid it’s going to be trouble for her when it’s made…and yes, it’s trouble, but it wasn’t what I expected in a very good way. Things really change in this latest, and I’m wondering how the events in this will affect future books. Well-written, captivating, fun, and full of surprises. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Enid & co are back! After the emotional rollercoaster of book 5 I was hoping our wonderful wordsmith would let my nails recover with book 6 🤣😂 Have never been so happy to be wrong!!

WOWZER!!! Deadly designs jumps back into Enids adventures from the first page & it had me hooked until the last sentence "Much, much more." Yes I did throw a mini tantrum when I realised that was the end of the book 😅 but only because I'm obsessed with the characters Jen Bair has brought into my life! Honestly I'd love to sit in the Retro Café & people watch & thats just the (living) humans!! Her characters are beautifully written flaws & all! Her world building is phenomenal, with hints of various myths, legends & folktales thrown in & given an extra bit of Jen Bair flavour!! I'm so honoured to be one of her ARC readers, but also devastated as I have to wait even longer for my next hit!!
If you haven't already fallen down the Shady Spirits rabbit hole, you need to 10/10 highly recommended!
This series was fantastic. Fantasy with ghosts, witches and immortals. This was a fun series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am just sorry that the series is done. I still have some questions.
I swear this series just keeps getting better. Enid and co are really put through a roller coaster of events and I am glad I made sure to leave enough time to read this story in one sitting.
