Don Quixote Versus the Devil is a collection of true accounts of the author's bipolar disorder episodes. Readers have described it in terms of "I couldn't put in down" and "extreme." It spans 20 years of misadventures, occurring mainly in Canada but located as far away as South Korea.
What do you do when life hands you bipolar disorder? Well, write a book, of course. My first published book, Don Quixote Versus the Devil: True Accounts of my Bipolar Disorder Misadventures, deals with the trials and tribulations I experienced through my various manic episodes. The book has garnered various reactions, with people saying everything from "I couldn't put it down" to "it was too extreme for me." I welcome any input on it... the book is available in Kindle version on Amazon. The book is far from my only exploit in writing, however. I've written for various southern Ontario newspapers since 1989, and also have numerous short stories and two science fiction books (also available in Kindle format) under my belt. I'm happily married, thankfully with a wife who puts up with my being in the next room much of the time, writing away.
I've recently re-read this book and I wanted to take a moment to write a review.
Don Quixote Versus the Devil is the real-life struggle of an individual who encounters mental health issues after a tragic loss. The book shows how difficult it is to live with and be treated with a mental health issue while trying to function and live life within the acceptable norms of society. Mr. Schmeidl does an exceptional job of explaining the challenges of getting an initial diagnosis, getting the correct medication and providing a glimpse to the reader on how life is viewed through the eyes of someone in the midst of a bipolar episode.
The book is honest as it delves into the personal experience of the author. I recommend it to anyone who has someone in their life who has been diagnosed as bipolar or anyone who seeks an understanding of bipolar issues and the daily struggle.
