I always find myself reading Anthea Lawson when I'm stressed. Her light, uncomplicated stories are the cure for my nerves. This story was no different. She got me in the mood for my vacation.
There is nothing of substance in this story, but it is pleasant. The writing is nice, the characters are not well developed, but they are likable, and the HEA is assured. I'd recommend this to satisfy a craving for friends-to-lovers/childhood friends/math-whiz heroine when you want something fluffy.
Warning--there is a bit of a caper at the end, but it only took a few pages and at no point was I in suspense. Overall, recommended if you want something quick but not deep. An ideal escape if you're stressed or just finished a book that was emotionally exhausting.
This is a short read, or in my case listen. The characters were fun though I struggled a little liking the male love interest.
This is NOT a sweet read. The story fits the description of *sweet* until the end when it advanced from kisses with tongues (stretching it for me for a sweet read) to boob feels which are definitely not a sweet read for me.
If that doesn't bother you, then you'll likely enjoy it. The narrator did a great job.
For a short story, this audiobook was outstanding. It actually felt more like a complete story, with well developed characters, a mystery to solve, and a villain. The 27-year old Earl of Edgerton is home visiting his country estate (away from London's fun and frivolity) due to the estate's loss of substantial money in the year since his father's death. As his eyes glaze over looking at the estate's accounting records, the Earl's best friend and neighbor suggests that his bookish sister Miranda look over the estate's ledgers. After all, she's been balancing their estate's accounts for years now. After only one afternoon looking over the books, mysterious accidents start to happen to her or surrounding her. Although I guessed who the villain was from almost the beginning, I really liked the way the author let us know how the hero was feeling - his anxieties and his fears. I also appreciated the descriptions showing how his affection for Miranda matured. Great job!
Such a good short novella. It's a wonderful little story for a couple of hours. Be aware that there's nothing no spice, just sweetness. As with all these novellas, I wish we could have just a little bit more so we could see a little bit of the happily ever after. I love it when we get a glimpse of the next bit of their married life, even a little epilogue. Still a good read and I'll be look for more by this author.
This was a great story, but too quick. I would have loved for it to be a full length book so everything was not so rushed. Wonderful characters.....all of them.
I was extremely disappointed in the hero, Edward. He is immediately disagreeable for reading the private journal of the heroine, Miranda. And at no point does he ever apologize for doing so. He spends approximately 90% of the text planning to marry someone else. He even argues against marrying anyone else to his best friend-Miranda's brother. He shows no growth or development.

“The problem with human attraction is not knowing if it will be returned.” Becca Fitzpatrick Charles and Miranda Price have grown up in Wyckerty, a country manor along the coast of West Dorset. As country gentry, the Price family has enjoyed a close relationship with their neighbors. Edgerton Manor, the country residence of Lord Edward Havens, Earl of Edgerton. Edward has recently inherited the title upon the unexpected death of his father. Edward and Charlie Price have been best friends since infancy and Miranda their communal little sister. Twenty-year-old Miranda is happy with her life in the country. She still feels some of the animosity that the seven-year-older Edward had always shown her. When Lord Edward is forced to stay in the country on a prolonged visit, the two childhood rivals start spending time together. For some undefined reason, the estate's books don’t seem right and the holdings seem to be losing money. Edward bends to the task of sorting it out. Miranda, a natural born mathematical wiz is drafted into assisting him.
This tale sweeps away the years and places the reader squarely in a Georgian ballroom, inhaling the scents of burning tapers and June flowers. It is a love story that takes years to create and only a single kiss to realize. The characters greet you openly on every page. This is another testament that great and beautiful things come in small packages. “A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.” – Ingrid Bergman
This is an enjoyable read. Miranda is an intelligent young woman and a neighbor of Edward who is an Earl. She dislikes him immensely because he is a rake. But helping him to discover why his estate finances show great losses causes them to become close.
Her brother is a fun character. The other characters are less vivid but stand out as much as they need to in the story.
I wish this had been longer to allow for scenes between Miranda and Edward.
Miranda is somewhat the hapless damsel in distress but she's also fiercely independent and determined to maintain control of her own mind and destiny. I found her pluck endearing and greatly admired her willingness to help and to demonstrate her formidable intellect.
The Earl of Edgerton is positively charming and it's clear right from the beginning that Miranda and Edward have the kind of relationship hard fought as only the best friend of her brother can have. Events go awry right from the very beginning as Miranda attempts to steal her journal from Edward's library after it was mistakenly delivered there and fate intervenes again and again to drive the two together.
All in all this book was delightful, it was light and witty without being overly saccharine and for a relatively short read it certainly packs in a lot of love, admiration, drama, danger and mystery.
