Seek the darkness… And the darkness will seek you.
In the wake of the battle between the Cyllenians and the Strangers, Maila has left behind the life she once knew—her city, her friends, and the safety of the walls. But with her newfound abilities and the family she’s found in Kieran, Nyathera, and the Strangers, the future is full of possibilities.
That is, until the Strangers make a difficult choice that changes everything.
Terrified that Kieran will lose control of his magic again, the grieving Strangers decide that he is no longer welcome at camp. And so begins the journey to locate Kieran’s only hope of learning to manage his powers—his father’s family, the dangerous and enigmatic Oryxians.
As Maila supports Kieran in his search for the Oryxians, she uncovers answers to her own questions along the way, including hard truths that leave her reeling. With her future with Kieran looking uncertain, her list of enemies growing larger by the day, and the threat of losing her new family forever, Maila has no choice but to risk it all—her life, her home, and her heart.

Thank you to the author/publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When book 1 was good, but book 2 is BETTER!!!!
Tropes: -Quest -Godlike being -Miscommunication -Found family -magic -High stakes/political intrigue -First person pov
Right away. LOVED THE more immersive world and the expanding of the magic system. The “god realm” was different and unique from other Romantasy books. The vibe is still divergent, but with magic
I just adore Maila and Kieran. They are both two perfectly imperfect main characters. There was a lot of miscommunication which I personally am not a huge fan of. Maila has moments of acting like an absolute child, but hey. Would it have been as interesting if she could communicate in a healthy way? Probably not. I truly hope they figure it out and find their way back to each other.
One of the shining stars here is the side characters. The banter is going to do it for me every time. ELITE. Tides of Gold and Oblivion gives you side characters that you love and side characters that you initially want to hate, but they grow on you. Xiomara ended up breaking my heart. 😭The friend circle is so deeply connected and feels genuine.
Lots of plot twists and new revelations regarding Kieran’s heritage that I’m excited to learn more about. Book 2 was an amazing build up for the absolute dog fight I know book 3 will be. With this cliff hanger? Shit is definitely going to go down. I want a front row seat. Can’t wait for book 3!!!!
I was so excited to receive the ARC for Tides of Gold and Oblivion, and I absolutely devoured it! It was a perfect book 2. Over the first few chapters of storytelling, Tara Straight masterfully reminded the reader of the cast of characters and events of the previous book, while introducing the plot of this current installation.
I continued to be impressed by the fluid writing, excellent pacing, clear and intriguing world building, vivid scenery, and dynamic characters and relationships. There was a very enjoyable emotional balance between page-turning intensity and humor. We get yearning and snark, high stakes and peaceful moments, even whimsy alongside primal fear.
The world building was refreshingly original and the characters are fully fleshed out people with their own quirks, flaws, and lovable qualities. Like book 1 of The Council of Cyllene series, book 2 once again felt like a full interim story arc with the right number of unresolved questions and a clear pathway to continue the journey through the series in the next book - which I’m already itching to read the second it’s ready!
Thank you to Tara for allowing me the privilege of being both a Beta and ARC reader on this one. This review is my honest opinion.
Now let me start by saying I loved the Beta version of this, had nothing changed I would still have loved it. The updated ARC however, with those tiny few adjustments made me love it even more. We jump into the story only a few weeks after the end of book 1 EOSAS, and it isn't long before we are hit with the first big scene that sets the rests of the story in motion. There's several surprises in store along with a rollercoaster of emotions. Some scenes had me laughing out loud, some I practically held my breath from the tension, and others I was close to tears of both anger and heartache. Tara writes beautifully and her descriptions and world building have you able to clearly visualise as you read along. We have some new characters to meet and we learn a little more about some of the characters from book 1. My favourite new character is Tacca, it's impossible not to fall in love with her, she's so kind and lovely. Another cliffhanger will have readers greedy for book 3, the final installment in the trilogy!
This book throws you directly into the story; an itty bitty recap would have been nice. I tend to forget things, though the first book ended quite epically.
I devoured this book in a couple of days, starting with reading during a beach camping trip. I read the first book at the beach so it was only fitting.
The emotions! The roller coaster of moods and anxiety and rage I felt reading this.
Where in the first book we were feeling the slow burn between Maila and Kieran, in book 2 we have a rollercoaster of emotions and drama. It doesn't help that we have people in the community who are hating on our girl because "why is he into her anyway"? Then, our man has issues, alright? He is struggling with his powers that seem to be unlocked when he's very emotional, to the point where the little community kicks him out for being a danger. He is devastated over what he did (accidentally) and the blame game is severe. The yearning and pain and emotional damage I got as a reader was intense.
Then we have female friendships that are the stuff of legends. And even a character who was maybe a frenemy before, and turns into a strong ally. The bonds formed with these people during their quest is epic. Speaking of quest, our friends go to meet with Kieran's real "family" the god-like alien somethings, where our man is asking for help with his powers. Ok, our man is getting therapy, he's a good guy! While he's in training, the others are snooping around and finding out some truths about the magical world and what happened in the incident that caused all the issues with the magicals and the non magicals. So we have some really neat new characters and worldbuilding going on.
Then we have the conflict with the jerks in the city. Just, let them be! So you don't like magic, so what? But no, we have to war. The ending, while not exactly a cliffhanger, was devastating, too. And we know book 3 will have all the burn the world down for his girl epic story line.
Let's go, need book 3 already. And I guess I'll also need to time reading the final book at the beach. Solid 4.5 stars.
Tropes I love:
Forbidden magic and unique beings Found family and strong female friendships Touch her and 💀 will literally unalive people over her and not even on purpose Mind bonds and magical connections MMC who yearns and works through his flaws
I received this arc and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Gosh… this one hurt in the best way. Deep. Emotional. High stakes. I spent this entire book clutching my chest.
Tara Straight truly does it again with book two.
Her writing is effortless; smooth, immersive, and completely consuming. This dystopian world continues to unfold in such a unique way, layered with a magic system that feels fresh and unpredictable.
Keiran and Maila… you can’t help but root for them. Thrown into chaos, navigating new powers, new consequences, and a place that doesn’t want them—you feel everything alongside them.
The romance? Spicy, swoon-worthy, and full of tension. The emotional weight? Real and heavy. The found family? Everything.
I laughed, I cried, I swooned… my toes curled and yes, I almost threw my Kindle.
Thank you for the eARC—I am so ready for book three.
✨ Start with: Enchantment of Silver and Sea (available now) Next: Tides of Gold and Oblivion — out April 14, 2026
Thank you so much to Tara and her team for choosing me as an ARC reader! 💛
This book was a fantastic sequel to Enchantment of Silver and Sea, and once again I’m left wanting more! You can tell the amount of time Tara spent world building and developing characters to make sure that this book read beautifully. She made me feel like a part of her story.
I went through all the emotions in this book, anger, frustration, sadness, joy, and anticipation!! The weight of emotion that these characters had on them in this story was palpable, especially at the end.
I can’t wait for the final book in this trilogy, I need it in my hands now!!💚
Great sequel to the first book, Enchantment of Silver and Sea, with a lot of character development from people I didn’t expect and quite a bit of tension at times. There were twists I didn’t see coming and world building that made me feel like I was standing there next to the characters. It definitely felt like the author wasn’t afraid to make tough decisions that actually make a difference to the story. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book, Dawn of Emerald and Ash, to come out to see how Maila and Kieran’s story continues!!
I could not get enough of Maila, Kieran, and the whole gang! I was completely hooked. This story was SO enjoyable and I genuinely don’t know how, but it somehow topped the first book?! I loved every second and literally could not put it down to save my life. The connections between the characters, the journey they go on, the twists and reveals… and the Oryxians and their way of life?? I was completely obsessed! The writing was incredible, and I’m honestly just in awe of Tara for creating something this captivating and beautiful. Such a stunning dystopian fantasy.. and the cliffhanger had me wanting to pull my hair out. I absolutely cannot wait for the last book in the trilogy
• Steamy forbidden love. • Morally Grey MMC • Betrayal • Found Family • Strong female friendships.
Another masterpiece by Tara Straight!!
I received my ARC copy yesterday and much like the first book of this series I could not put it down. It had me feeling every emotion, laughing and gasping out loud and I could not put it down. I absolutely loved it, definitely my favourite read of the year.
The depth of the relationships between the characters are beautiful, I fully feel like I know each and everyone one of them personally. This book picked up so well from the first, I was immediately immersed in the story and its world from page 1. I really wasn't sure how Tara was going to top book 1 as I loved it so much, but she's absolutely knocked it out the water. Her writing is so immersive you quite literally feel as if you are within the story.
We continue with Maila and Kieran's story as she adapts to life outside Cyllene and Kieran has to face the consequences of losing control of his powers. I read this book in less than 24 hours, and cannot wait to read the final installment. 100% recommend, an absolutely wonderful book.
I was impressed with how well book 2 was handled. It can always be a tall order for a middle book in a series to find the balance between storyline, character development and information downloads. I think we got all of these in this sequel.
Let’s start with the characters. Maila and Kieran are back and have a little tension between them in the beginning. They’re together but not fully and she doesn’t seem to understand what’s holding him back. There’s always a setback in romances where we have to have trials, but finding out he subconsciously blames her for his actions that led to killing his friends in the battlefield causes a rift that I wasn’t expecting.
There were moments where I was frustrated with the two main characters. Of course I understand exactly where each of them is coming from, she hurts and feels betrayed while he’s right in the we all have thoughts we cannot control. The tension leading up to their resolution was tough because it felt like it could have so easily been avoided and we lose out on so much time they could have been together. Communication really isn’t that difficult!
As for the rest of the crew, we get Nya still being sassy but the most supportive friend you could ask for. Xiomara actually has a redemption arc, and we get more of Ivan. Sigrid, Cecil, and the rest of the strangers don’t play too large a role in this except the very beginning and end.
We also finally meet the Oryxians and that kinda turns out as you would expect… they’re smug, arrogant assholes who tear apart our MC’s as soon as they reconcile!! All except for Tacca. Bless that sweet girl. That twist was unexpected!! I cannot wait to see more of her and how her relationship with Kieran and the rest develops.
I hope Zander comes around in the end, and it’s about to get intense with all of Cyllene.
I'm really hoping this group gets their happy ending. The cliffhanger was a tough one and i’m more than ready for the final book of the trilogy!!!
Finally, thank you to the author for the eARC, looking forward to Dawn of Emerald and Ash !
Favorite quotes: - "I can't lose you again," he said. "I thought I lost you once. Then I thought I lost you again. I need this to be the last time, Maila. I need you to promise me that you belong to me, and I belong to you, and nothing is ever going to change that. No matter what happens, what we have to face, what bullshit might try to tear us apart again, you're not going anywhere. You'll never lose sight of how much I fucking adore you, and you'll always, always be mine." - "I want to do it however you want, Maila," he said. "We can do a bonding ceremony like they do back at camp, once I can prove I have my abilities under control. Or we can do whatever it is they do in Cyllene. Or some 'marriage' ceremony with lots of pretty vows like you've read about in your books. We can do it right away or years from now. We can even do nothing at all, if that's what you prefer. Just tell everyone we're spending our lives together, and that's the end of it. Whatever you want, as long as you're mine."
Thank you, Tara, for the ARC! (Available April 14, 2026).
This is the stunning sequel of Enchantment of Silver and Sea. Picking up right where the first book ends, we’re thrust into a journey to find the Oryxians who will hopefully be the key to Kieran learning how to control his powers.
The world building is expanded in Tides of Gold and Oblivion in a really interesting way. While book 1 explores Cyllene and some of the outside world, this book focuses on Oryx, and this world feels completely different. This in turns makes the overall atmosphere of the book unique!
The characters themselves also experience a lot of growth, especially Kieran. A few other characters that were introduced in book 1 are also given a more important role in book 2, and I really enjoyed getting to know them better. A few more important people are introduced in this one, with one in particular becoming one of my new favorites!!
Tara does a beautiful job of creating a story with intricate magic, dystopian vibes, heartwarming moments, but also gut wrenching and anxiety inducing cliffhangers that leaving you itching for more! I’m seriously in love with this story and think it’s a wonderful continuation from book 1!
I loved how this sequel picks up exactly where Enchantment of Silver and Sea left off. It made it so easy to jump right back into the story without missing a beat.
This installment takes you far beyond Cyllene, uncovering the real truths of the world alongside the characters. The exploration of the various magic systems was such an adventure, and it left me wanting to know even more. I also loved the core group of characters. Each character feels unique and easy to identify, and the new additions are just as interesting.
The exploration of grief and regret was incredibly well done. While some might see a miscommunication trope, the internal struggle and how it affects the characters' perceptions of themselves and those they love makes the dynamic so much deeper.
While the first book felt like dipping your toes into adult fantasy, this story definitely turns up the spice. It’s tasteful but includes an interesting twist that heavily adds to the plot and keeps you completely hooked.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Tara Straight for giving me an e-ARC to read ahead of publishing.
Jumps right off at the cusp of war, after the epic showdown between the Cyllenians and the Strangers, Maila has ditched her old life, being a young witch in her own right. As Maila and Kieran try to find their footing, their cast out due to unexpected chaos and their magic abilities going awry or so it seems. Finding her place and her inner calm while being adrift from place to place and not on her own accord, she faces many trails and tribulations with many shocking new found truths a foot…With her new family's future at stake, Maila has only one choice, to rise to the challenge, and embrace the uncertainty…will she succeed or succumb, only the cliffhanger will tell.
“Seek the darkness... And the darkness will seek you”.
For lovers of fantasy, war time, arduous adventures and self discovery, this is a perfect choice.
“You have not returned to the ocean,” Larimar said suddenly. “I haven’t,” I confirmed. “Not since the day we met.” “When you do,” they said, “you will find the waters unsettled. You will find that the tide is coming in, whether the shore is ready to receive it or not.”
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Found Family 💪🏻 Strong Female Friendship ✨ Unique Magic System 🌶️ Spicy Cave Time 🩶 Morally Grey MMC 🤺 Touch Her and 🪦
First off, I want to thank Tara for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review. Second, the sophomore follow up can sometimes be a hard hill to climb, but Tara did a phenomenal job on this book! This part of the trilogy focuses more on the expansion of the world of Cyllene and preparing the reader for what this story is building up to. While slow at points, it does pay off in the end for a finale that has you gasping for what comes next.
The tension and slow burn in this one was absolutely delicious and had me frothing for more. The character development was also chefs kiss 🧑🍳 💋 I cannot wait to get my greedy hands on the next installment!
This is a wonderful expansion on the world of Cyllene and the Strangers from Ersa Estates. Tides of Gold and Oblivion follows Maila, Kieran, Nya and friends, through their journey in navigating the changes brought about at the end of Enchantment of Silver and Sea. We get a greater look into the background of Maila’s newfound family and the steamy highs and infuriating lows of a relationship in a post Awakening world. Add in the surreal nature and temperament of the Oryxians and you have yourself a good amount of tension just waiting to snap. And oh, it does!
I feel like this was a great second installment in a trilogy. Everything I would want it to be. Character growth. Introduction of new characters. Discovering more about the world. A few answers and a lot more questions!! That last 100 pages of… Damn!… A plot twist I didn’t even consider and a good cliffhanger! Or two 😉
Thank you, Tara Straight, for trusting me with an arc! I cannot- or rather can’t- wait to get my hands on this and book 3!
-Repost of review on my Instagram page, to help spread the word-
The second installment in Tara Straight’s series, Tides of Gold and Oblivion, completely swept me away. One of the standout elements of this book is its original dystopian world. This book expands on the foundations laid in the first book with rich, immersive world-building that feels both vivid and thoughtfully constructed. Every detail adds depth, making the setting come alive in a way that’s hard to forget. Another highlight is the magical beings featured in the story. They are truly unique and exceptionally well-crafted, adding an extra layer of intrigue and originality to an already fascinating world.
Every main character shows meaningful growth throughout the story, evolving in response to the challenges they face. Their development feels natural and I got so invested in their journeys. My favorite character is Ivan, with his well-timed funny comments. This added a refreshing lightness to the story, balancing the darker elements perfectly. I found myself genuinely smiling (and sometimes laughing out loud), which made the reading experience even more engaging.
And that ending—what a cliffhanger! It left me desperate to know what is going to happen next. I absolutely cannot wait to dive into the next book in the series.
Book 2 in The Council of Cyllene series and DAMN! Book 1 left on a cliffhanger so you know I was just waiting for book 2 to get all my answers. I got my answers but I also have so many new questions! I got the tea and I'm ready for my third cup!
We get to learn more about our existing characters and meet new ones! Tacca is my favorite new character and I just can not wait to learn more about her story in book 3. Plus the growth from all our favorites is such a messy beautiful roller coaster I did not want to get off. You get all the emotions in this book.
Cliffhangers are not my favorite thing in the world but it worked. I can not wait to read the final book in this trilogy.
If fantasy books with beautiful world building, steamy forbidden love, betrayal, and found family is your vibe then this is the series for you.
Check trigger warnings before starting any new book. And as always, happy reading!
This book is SO. MUCH. FUN. We pick up just weeks after book one and it does NOT slow down. Maila and Kieran are thrown into chaos. Exiled from camp, searching for Kieran's mysterious Oryxian family, and uncovering hard truths along the way. The world-building is even richer, the magic system is fresh and unpredictable, and the found family feels like everything.
I laughed out loud, practically held my breath, nearly cried, and yes — almost threw my Kindle. Some scenes had me swooning, some had me clutching my chest, and that ending?? You are NOT prepared.
New characters to fall in love with, old favorites to root for, and a romance that is equal parts spicy and swoon-worthy 👀; Tara Straight does it AGAIN.
Haven't started the series yet? Book one (Enchantment of Silver and Sea) is available now too — perfect time to binge both! 📚
It’s SO good. Like, clear your schedule and settle in with a drink good 🍸
This picks up right after book one and throws you straight back in with Maila, Kieran, and the Strangers dealing with everything that went down.
They set out to find the Oryxians to help Kieran learn how to control his magic, and along the way Maila starts getting answers… some she wanted, some she really didn’t.
I loved how this one expands the world. We get a deeper look at Oryxians and it feels completely different from book one in the best way. It added a whole new layer to the story. I want my own super comfy piece of sky!!
There’s a lot of growth here, especially with Kieran. Side characters step up more too,and we meet some new ones as well. And yes… there were moments I did not see coming.
This is such a strong middle book and now I need the final ASAP.
Oh my gosh! I absolutely love this book! The story continues on from book one so clearly, it was like everything I had already read came rushing back.
Maila and Kieran, along with a few friends, have left Ersa Estates to find the Oryxians so Kieran can get his powers under control. Along the way, Maila uncovers a truth that rocks her to her core.
Honestly, I couldn’t get enough of this book! The emotion, the devastation, all of it. This series - The Council of Cyllene - is just so good!
Holy!! Tacca! I didn’t see that coming from a mile away.
This is an absolute wild ride of a second book and I CANNOT wait for book three! I was nearly screaming at my ereader when I finished. I want more! I need to know how it all ends!
2 hours and 15 minutes...I consumed all 300 pages of this book in less than 2.5 hours. It is THAT GOOD. It is always such a treat when a second book in a series matches and then surpasses the first book. I went on a full ride of emotion; crying, laughing, toe-curling-feet-kicking giddy, and wanting to throw my kindle in frustration. ToGaO dives even deeper into the emotions of the characters and you can't help but feel for them. The uniqueness of the other world of Oryx was so beautifully described, hauntingly beautiful. I have so much love for Maila and Kieran, getting deeper into their story and feelings was painful and real. I am already aching for the 3rd book, but so not ready for it to end. I love being apart of Tara's street team and thank you so much for the ARC!
Woah… 😳 what did I just read( in the best way ) This book packed a punch! I have to say it kept me hooked the whole time! I fell in love even more with the characters. I can safely say that I went through every single emotion reading this.. and the ending wow don’t even get me started because what do you mean the last book isn’t out yet? When does the next book come out because I’m waiting already!
You will find me waiting for the final book in this trilogy! I loved the writing in this book I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and the way she made you fall so deeply for the characters even the minor ones!! Go check this series out if you haven’t already!!!
This sequel to Enchantment of Silver and Sea gave me everything I needed, even if I didn't necessarily want it. The found family, the magic, the heartbreak, the intrigue then the devistation. Tara has managed to really get beneath her readers skin.
We meet some interesting new characters, while getting to know more about the ones we already love (or not). There may or may not be one character I didn't think I would cry over but did - I love a good character arc. I do however have a new favourite character, with their friendliness, knowledge and humour. So wholesome.
I always love when you can fall right back into a world with ease, and Tides of Gold and Oblivion was no exception! I loved learning more about the Strangers and I especially loved seeing Maila's growth and change from book 1.
We went on quite the journey with these characters in book 2 and experienced so many changes and emotions with them. They had some big things to figure out and I cried right along with them as they did.
We learned some things: family (born into or found) is important if you choose to make it so. Trust is not freely given (many have ulterior motives), and choosing to love someone isn't always simple, but worth it if you work together.
I am still reeling from where we ended, and will be chomping at the bit to find out what happens next!
⭐️Found Family ⭐️Unique Magic System ⭐️Sassy & Grumpy Magical Beings ⭐️Strong Female Friendships ⭐️Morally Grey MMC & Smart Loving FMC ⭐️and add a bit of Spice!
"I’ll kill every one of them. But not with my magic. With my hands. Slowly.”
"Dead, dead, dead."
Continuing my rant. . . I cracked my phone. Twice. Once for the first book. Twice for the second book. Like, how DARE you make me scream, giggle, and cry at the same time? Do NOT get me started on the ending. Ma'am. No. Absolutely not. (Yes) I am super traumatized now. First quote, specifically, had me engrossed into the characters rage. RAGE.
This was such a good sequel! There were some good character development arcs in this one. And I enjoyed getting some back story behind the world building from book one. I loved one of the new side characters, Tacca. I couldn’t put it down for the last third of the book. And the cliffhanger for this one was SO GOOD. Can’t wait for the third and final installment in this trilogy!
Thank you to Tara Straight for allowing me to be part of your ARC team again!
While not my typical genre of book, or series, this book really drew me in and keep me intrigued throughout. I loved the character development and conversation between the characters felt natural. Excellent job of creating a world that you can see in your minds eye, and great story overall! I loved the periods of action mixed with mystery. Great follow up to the first book and I’m ready for the next one!
I had ALL of the emotions with this one. I was even mad at the author for a portion of the story. You get the highs, the lows, and the in between with this book. It was a lovely follow up to EOSAS and I do agree with the point that this book reads easier than the first. As soon as this review is submitted, I’m texting Tara to demand the release of the finale.
Maila and Kieran have such a good story. It’s full of hardship, angst and some hurtful times. But through it all I do believe Love conquers all. The first book had a lot more action and this book was more informative, with action in the end. Maila is truly a powerful conduit and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. 3🌶️
