THAT'S HOW ROMANCE/INTIMACY IS WRITTEN! I love Sebastian. This book made me feel like I'm Candra.
Full review in a few days. My keyboard is broken.

Received this book as part of the tour.
The story confused me at first, actually, I'm still confused with the plot. I don't understand why Candra had to choose and its significance with the story since it ended in surprisingly good way, but all I cared about was the romance between her and Sebastian. I loved how it was written and it made me feel like I was Candra. Their relationship feels natural, they did not fall in love right away but the attraction is evident but both of them would not admit to it.
The descriptions are elaborate which makes it easy to imagine a particular scene or location. Although I would sometimes get lost in the conversation because every thought and reaction is described and I'll forget that the characters were having a conversation.
For me, there's still a mystery with what the real danger is. Candra had to choose between Sebastian and Draven, and at the time, I assumed the latter was the bad guy. This choice is not just for who she wants to be with but the two guys actually represents opposing factions of Watchers (if I'm not mistaken with the terms), the Nuhra and Tenebra, respectively. That was the part that wasn't clear to me, what choosing a side would mean.
As for the minor characters, they were developed well too. I would love to get to know them more but their roles are just that, minor. My favorite minor is Lofi, for me she's neutral, she's a good friend to Candra and answers her questions when no one else did. Ananchel is a mystery too, I did not understand what she could do. I must have been groggy when I read that part but her powers came as vague to me.
In the end it all made sense. There's still a mysterious danger looming ahead but right now I am happy with how it ended and hopefully I'd get to experience more Candra/Sebastian love in the next book.

I love Carol Oates' lush writing. She delivers another powerful YA story with Ember, exploring teenager Candra Ember's awakening to the world of angels (and perhaps demons).
When an evil red-haired beauty throws Candra off a roof, it's the mysterious Sebastian who comes to her rescue. Candra thinks she's concussed when she first sees Sebastian's wings, but their second appearance convinces her that what she saw was real.
Sebastian had wings.
When they stretched out behind him to their full majestic size, the fine plumage looked luxurious and soft as satin. They trembled gently in the light breeze, thinning out to golden tips at the very edges. Something about it reminded her of swans rising proudly from water.
Unfortunately it's unclear if Sebastian wants to kiss her or kill her, and another group of angels tries to persuade Candra away from Sebastian. From the moment Candra meets Draven, it's obvious he's someone special.
When he stepped back, his lips pulled in a delicious lopsided grin. His eyes were the most unusual color: a deep, penetrating midnight blue, framed in the longest jet black lashes she'd ever seen.
It was absurdly endearing the way his mouth was slightly uneven when he smiled, revealing a perfect set of Hollywood-white teeth. Candra found herself toying with the idea of asking him if he wanted to have a drink, a dance...or to be the father of her children.
Ha ha! Draven has a sense of danger about him that's both alluring and off-putting. Who to trust?
I really like the complexity of Cambra's character. She's wise beyond her years yet she has a playful side too, like the time she gets Sebastian to roll down a hill for the sheer joy of tumbling out of control. He enjoys the experience almost as much as she she thrills from flying with him:
Up and up they went, with Sebastian's face lifted to the sky above them, but she could see he was smiling widely, each whoosh of his huge wings pushing them higher and higher. This was his rolling down a hill, she realized. This was where he felt free, and he was sharing it with her.
The ending surprised me in a very good way. Can't wait to read Iridescent which also has a gorgeous cover.

I can't honestly say I really liked this book, which is pretty disappointing because the description made it seem interesting. I was dying to finish this book - and not in a good way.
The story basically centers on a girl, Candra, who is very special. The first 100 pages or so of the book are filled with confusion - not just for the main character, but for me as well, and I am a big reader so this was definitely a problem. In the beginning there are all these little bits of information that Candra is trying to find out but no one is being honest and straightforward with her. This would be okay if at some point in the story everything was actually put together. Instead, all the information is spattered in bits and pieces throughout the pages of the book and even now after finishing the book I'm still uncertain about what was supposed to be so special and significant about Candra.
Every single page is also littered with romance and sensual scenes. Not my typical type of book. Every single little movement any of the characters ever makes is described and frankly, that gets boring. I guess it's the writing device for making the story seem more romantic.
The story seemed to be building up to something that it never quite reached. The ending could have been better. Instead, it was a badly put-together happily ever after. Throughout the whole book everyone is worried, scared, falling in or out of love. A sacrifice has to be made. Then a random proposal is made and everyone is suddenly agreeing with each other, perfectly fine to change their ways (since it was so easy why couldn't they just agree with each other beforehand? Candra really does seem unnecessary) and forbidden love with its consequences is magically undisputed.

ehhhh... this is hard for me to grade on a 5 scale, so i would probably have to do with 3.75 because for very good reasons not just because i like to be that ass, that does well, look at me doing, .75 and 3/4s that just annoying but seriously i was back and forth with this book. So I'll tell you why, but i think its a worth a look see that is for sure. If you like angel stories then sure go for it, but if you are looking for a more in depth review here we go!
Okay so mind you i was sick when i was reading this, i mean super sick so i don't want to completely blame my illness on my reading experience of this book but i do want it to be known that i get really confused when i am sick because of the medicine, and the getting caught staying up for hours on end not being able to sick, etc, etc, etc. BUT i honestly believe most of this wasn't because i was sickly. So moving on to reviewing now.
The first half of this book is what made it straight to a 3 for me, i was considering not even finishing it honestly. Well don't listen to first half of me because the second made it worth it. I don't think that the first half was boring, or not well written because it was well written, there was stuff going on. But my God i think i went insane trying to figure out what was happening. Candra - our main character, well one of them at least - is kept in the dark. What bothers me is when some serious shit goes down and she doesn't get answers. She supposedly demands answers but doesn't get any so she lets it happen. Its not hard to figure out what she is really, but thats not the problem every author changes theories, and ideas and that is awesome, i love it! only... Carol Oates confused the hell out of me. I am not a super religious person...(and i am not traveling down that road so you can just forget it) but what i mean is...would this have been easier if you knew more things about angels, there fall, and all that jazz? cause all i know comes from other paranormal angel stories i've read. i am not sure to tell you the truth, if you have an answer for me, sweet bring it on baby. Anyways moving on.
So first half of book, i was mostly going WTF? im in a maze and i keep hitting dead ends i am not sure where i am heading. Oooooooohhhhhh but the second half, i think made up for it. i quickly caught on once Carol Oates started talking my language - not literally - but i was catching what she was throwing out there. She started to explain what was going on in a plain like, here let me lay it out for you because i was not getting otherwise. there are still things in the book that confused me what i think i will be pondering for the rest of my life but hey i'll live. and i don't want to go into specifics for it. So i will comment on my feelings of the ending at the near end of the blog so that if you don't want to know you don't have to know.
Moving on to characters. (and i am only going to do three out of the million characters because i feel like everyone else didn't really matter after you met the boys)
Candra: Our main gally gal. Well um...hmm. I liked her enough. I thought she was a really well rounded character. She fought with Sebastian a lot. She didn't back down when she needed to stand strong but like i said before she just accepted things were strange but didn't demand answers... so that annoyed me about her. She i think was sometimes trying to hard to be the "bad" girl when everyone was saying that she was the "good" girl. Lets just agree to disagree, she is both good and bad like the rest of us. We make decisions, and we do stupid things, but in the end she is willing to do more for her small - new-ish - family then most people would do for the family they have known their entire lives. Girl deserves your respect if nothing else. But her fear to fall in love wasn't backed by anything. She never gave us a reason just fought as much as she could. Her father died, her birth mother died but really I know she didn't grieve for her birth mother because she had Brie, and i don't really feel like she was still mourning her father, but she lost him a long time ago, holding on to the past too tightly can be annoying in a main character especially if it has been like years since it happened. So yay for Candra. Anyways she is like a said a well rounded character, strong when she needs to be, and she knows her limitations and knows who she wants to be vulnerable with.
Sebastian: Our boy-wonder. Comes into Candra's life already knowing Brie. And well lets focus on Sebastian shall we? He is angry, and he is cold, disconnected, and quite frankly at one point i thought i was going to hate him but God, i don't know i didn't take his threats seriously. He never felt like he was lying, it never felt like a game to me from him. We get mostly his and Candra's perspectives so we know what he might or might not be up to, and we know his feelings. In the end he is still cold, hard, angry but there is one person he can be real around, one person he can also be vulnerable around.
Draven: Um not a whole lot to say about this kid because he isn't in it as much as i thought he was going to be in it. He is the other man. And being the other man, he doesn't ever really pose a threat of being part of a love triangle. Sure he might try but i didn't feel it. There is i think Once it switches to his perspective and i was really and utterly confused by that because it was more than half way through the book and never happens again and i was like...What? And he relieves something, and i think that was what kept me going until i got really into the book. I want to know. So yup... like i said not a whole lot to say about him....
So now before i do my thing about the ending, i will try not to do spoilers but it might not make a whole lot of sense so if you don't want to know. there isn't much of a cliffhanger, there are unanswered things left but no cliffhanger. at least i didn't think so. anywhos that isn't my thing about endings its coming after this annoying message about checking out my blog! it started with a friend i think almost a month ago now... so we are new, babies really but if you enjoyed my review there are more here: http://theviolethourbookreviews.wordp... so if you are looking for another good book to check out, just check us out we will help you...hopefully.

Why I read this book:
I was part of a book blog tour. I liked Carol Oates previous work and I'm a fan of Omnific Publishing. A young adult paranormal romance from Oates and Omnific was too much to resist not reading.
What I liked:
This book was a very character driven story, which I’m all about. I fully invested in the main characters and the supporting cast. This story has a nice romance at the core that just makes you squirm at all the tension! I am a sucker for the push and pull of a budding relationship. The ‘will they or won’t they’ get their act together pulls at my little reader heart strings.
Candra and Sebastian are one of the best young adult examples of feeling like you can cut the romantic tension in the air. You will root for these two and all the while wonder about this ‘other guy’ Draven. I wasn’t sure what to think about him but he has more to do with the overall plot in addition the romance I think. I really appreciate that Oates has written a complex character with Sebastian. He is struggling with himself and a mess of new emotions. I think she did a great job portraying how a man would handle these feelings with the type of situation he is personally facing. Candra is a likable character and takes A LOT of things in stride. However, one tragic incident occurs and it was good to see her crack after everything that has happened. One thing I can say is I felt all the raw emotions along with the characters, from butterflies in the stomach, to a first kiss, to heartbreak and sense of duty.
Ember sets the stage for character building, fully investing the reader into caring what comes next. The sinister side of the plot is just taking form in this book and I’m set for some action coming for everyone. This leads me to the type of cliffhanger this book has. There is resolution to the romantic conflict set in this book, albeit this resolution comes with an unexpected twist. The cliffhanger involves a sinister ‘something’ that I can’t say much about because it deals with the twist and well, it was part of the cliffhanger, so I don’t know. :)
Things to be aware of:
This isn’t really a didn’t like, but something to be aware. It does take a few chapters to start attaching to the story. The beginning mixes getting to know the characters, setting a stage for everyone’s place in the story, setting the foundation for this paranormal world, and until that gets established, you are left wondering which way to throw your allegiance in characters and guessing where the plot is going to go. I didn’t see where the plot was actually going to go though until the end. It’s hard for me admit this since I pride myself in figuring plots out quickly. ;) Needless to say, because I thought I knew how things would play out, I was surprised at the climax and kept reading furiously thinking, “OK, where’s the catch.” There is a catch but you’ll have to read the book to find out for yourself. :)
The paranormal side deals with fallen angels and the story created behind it does not fit with traditional Christian views. This is a work of fiction that takes existence of the fallen angel’s story and is woven into something created by the author to spin a good paranormal tale. There are other young adult fallen angel books out there, but Ember stands on its own among them. Yes, I’ve read those too. :)
Overall:
I enjoyed Ember as a young adult paranormal romance. I felt the character’s emotions and struggles. I genuinely liked all of them. Even the bad guys have a sort of appeal to them that keeps you guessing. I am intrigued where the plot is going. I know something dark is coming, but just what, I have no clue and that drives me nuts! I very much appreciate reading a young adult book that actually has the main character at a young adult age, Candra is somewhere 18-21 years old. There are sexual innuendos, but there is nothing inappropriate. Oates handles young adult sexual situations in a very conservative manner, I think, yet still creates steamy romantic scenes through sheer emotion. I would highly recommend this to paranormal romance readers 8th grade and up.

It’s hard for me admit this since I pride myself in figuring plots out quickly. ;) Needless to say, because I thought I knew how things would play out, I was surprised at the climax and kept reading furiously thinking, “OK, where’s the catch.” There is a catch but you’ll have to read the book to find out for yourself. :)
The paranormal side deals with fallen angels and the story created behind it does not fit with traditional Christian views. This is a work of fiction that takes existence of the fallen angel’s story and is woven into something created by the author to spin a good paranormal tale. There are other young adult fallen angel books out there, but Ember stands on its own among them. Yes, I’ve read those too. :)
Overall:
I enjoyed Ember as a young adult paranormal romance. I felt the character’s emotions and struggles. I genuinely liked all of them. Even the bad guys have a sort of appeal to them that keeps you guessing. I am intrigued where the plot is going. I know something dark is coming, but just what, I have no clue and that drives me nuts! I very much appreciate reading a young adult book that actually has the main character at a young adult age, Candra is somewhere 18-21 years old. There are sexual innuendos, but there is nothing inappropriate. Oates handles young adult sexual situations in a very conservative manner, I think, yet still creates steamy romantic scenes through sheer emotion. I would highly recommend this to paranormal romance readers 8th grade and up.

Miss Carol Oates is one magnificent writer! Reading “Ember” reminded me why I love the good old Paranormal Romance. It reminded me why I love all those sad and full of angst angels. This is one great read for me.
The main characters are really well written. They would both make you giddy and frustrate you. I always thought that when my emotions are twisted in a roller coater ride by the characters of one book then that means, the writer is an effective one. Miss Carol Oates also did a fantastic job on writing about the supporting characters. She gave them importance. The supporting characters were given their own moment to shine and they affected me as the reader. The supporting characters were not in the story just for the heck of it, but they were vital in order to make the changes that the two main protagonists are going through, much more believable and effective. Miss Oates succeeded in what other writers lacked; she made the other characters important and memorable as the two main protagonists.
Candra and Sebastian’s chemistry was excellently done! A reader would be a stone not to feel their chemistry. Although, I would admit that there were times that they frustrated me and I didn’t understand why they’re not together but the moment they did admit their feelings for each other was perfect, and right then and there, I realized that it is how it should be. It actually touched me. That scene was powerful and full of emotions.
I don’t think I could say anything more to describe how much I enjoyed reading this book. I swear to you, my fellow book lovers, that when you read this book you’ll feel all kinds of emotions, giddy, sad, frustrated, and happy. I’m sure you’ll want to read more!
Congratulations to Miss Carol Oates for making a wonderfully written Romance that has the power to stir the emotions of its readers.
I cannot wait to read the next one!

Are all angels good? What if there are some that choose to stray from their proclaimed destinies? What if there are some that crave human life enough to forsake Heaven?
Candra wasn't even sure angels existed. Till she saw one - wings and everything. Ember starts like an episode from Lost: there are a million of questions and mysteries pouring in, and all you want to do is get the answers! So, evidently, I read the book pretty fast, because you're gnawing your nails away, wanting to know more and more about the story.
Candra wakes up in a hospital room, but everything she can recall about the accident is a woman with red hair, falling from a parking garage and a man (with wings) staring at her from far off. She can't undersatand why she has no bruises and what was the man with wings and the woman with red hair doing there.
Carol Oates writes an angel romance that is completely different from the ones we have nowadays. Candra thought all angels were good, and now she's having a hard time figuring out who to trust. The reader (and Candra) spends a lot of time trying to label the characters as good or bad guys, but later finds that the situation is a lot more complex.
Candra and Sebastian's relationship takes a while to boil and has time to develop, which is good, and i'ts what's been missing in so many YA novels these days. And of course, there's the third piece in the love triangle: Draven. A mysterious black-winged angel that doesn't like wearing shoes and seems to be wanting much more than just Candra.
The development of the characters is great - the fact that we only understand Sebastian midway through the book is not a bad thing. Candra's not passive, but good and romantic - knowing how to be brave and feisty when it's necessary, of course!

Ember by Carol Oates introduces readers to Candra Ember. She seems like an average eighteen-year-old; she certainly thinks of herself that way as the novel opens. After an encounter with a mysterious red-head and a fall that should have killed her, she awakes in a hospital without a scratch on her. How did she survive? And who was the strange boy she remembered staring at her while she was loaded into the ambulance after her fall? ...And why did he have wings? That's were the mysteries begin and this list continues to grow throughout the book. There are so many twists and turns and questions that I just couldn't stop reading. I HAD to find out what was going on and what was going to happen next. There was no question about that.
Carol Oates writes beautifully. She paints each scene skillfully enough to make the reader feel as though they are a part of the story instead of just a bystander. When writing about angels it would be easy to fall into a corny plot-line and even cornier dialogue, but Ms. Oates doesn't fall victim to this. She keeps the genre fresh by making her angels surprisingly relatable and keeping the story moving forward without it dragging relentlessly.
I'm not easily surprised by the course that most plots take but I found myself continually surprised by this one. Just remember that things aren't always as they seem!

Ember was an interesting book to read. Carol Oates writing was easy to follow along. I really liked Sebastian as a character. All her characters were interesting, like Draven, I wasn't sure if he was good or bad at first. I felt Candra's pain during some of the scenes. She just wanted to be a normal girl.
The tension between Candra and Sebastian was nicely played out. I loved Sebastian. He plays a major role in this book as like a guardian to protect Candra away from Draven (the bad boy). Let me just say that this book had action and some romance. I was rooting for Sebastian all the way, even if he was either the good guy or bad guy, I still dont know. If there is a sequel, I would totally read it to know what else is gonna happen. I cant wait, the whole premise really drew me in, about Angels and Hell. I want more!! Cant wait until sequel, I get to see more Sebastian!

Ember is a beautifully written romance that showcases the miracles and amazing change that can come about when love is given without condition.
Stories that focus on forbidden love are always my favorite, and Ms. Oates did not disappoint with Ember. The writing was strong, the descriptions vivid, and the characters complex and full of life. Swept away by Candra and Sebastion's angsty, back and forth relationship, I struggled to put my iPad down, and spent most of last night with my face plastered to the screen.
I enjoyed the slow build between the main characters, and found myself breathless and almost giddy when things finally began to heat up between the two. Ms. Oates did a fabulous job of capturing the mixed emotions torturing both the hero and heroine. I literally felt their want/need for each other rising up off the page. That right there, my friends, is the mark of a good book.
Ember has a good mix of angst, suspense, lust and love and I highly recommend it for both teen and adult readers alike.

I have had my eye on this book for quite a while, Once When I found a blog tour for the first book, and I jumped on it. I was drawn to the book by the cover alone. It is so beautiful; in fact when I signed up for the tour, it didn’t even register the book was about angels. I only skimmed the synopsis. I am actually glad I did. I have had my share of angel books as of late and would have missed out on a wonderful, beautiful, powerful read. I absolutely fell for this book.
So the short version of the story: teenage girl, Candra (love the name) wakes up on a normal day, ends up in the hospital, realizes some creepy new stalkers in her life, she was lied to and kept secrets from her entire life, nothing is at it seems, and now her life isn’t even her own…. Oh and there are 2 hot guys fighting over here?
Short version with a little more detail: Candra has a terrible accident and ends up in the hospital. From this moment nothing in her life will ever be the same. She finds out angels exist, she is part angel, and now she has to save the angels and the world. She was pretty okay with this until she actually falls in love with the one guy she shouldn’t be with. She has to choose, love or life.
I will admit that I was a bit confused in the beginning and for the first 50 pages or so; I had a hard time getting into the story. The story moved pretty quickly but it was almost too quick into the background and I found myself having to reread a few things and was still a little lost. The explanations didn’t always seem to be clear, maybe it was intentional because further down I was no longer confused and I was in deep. Could not put the book down, don’t talk to me, don’t look at me, I am in my zone.
The plot was a bit different the most fallen angel and angel stories, I really enjoyed the spin on the age old tale of angels in the YA section of the book store. There was a bit of a love triangle but not really, one was love and the other a strange pull, attraction, chemistry. The love story was actually very heart wrenching for me, a forbidden love that just didn’t seem to have way to be. There were a few scenes where I was crying, chest aching, and I wanted to throw the book, except it was my kindle so I couldn’t. I was really glad for those really sexy steamy scenes to give my emotions some balance.
I was really attached to Candra and to Sebastian; it was very easy to do. Candra was a very selfless heroine and she took her fate with grace and dignity. She believed she only had one choice and no matter how hard it was to save the world at the expense of her own happiness, she would do it. I respected her; I would have been selfish and kept the hot guy. As long as I had him, right. I fell for Sebastian, but it was a slow fall. At first he is arrogant, hot-headed, and pretty cold. Once he opened up and started to allow himself to feel, I fell hard. He is smooth, sexy, and saws just the right things at the right moments.
This was not just a paranormal romance for me, the love, the sacrifices, the pain, and the rare moments of joy really got to me. I laughed and I cried. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Angels seem to be the next big thing in YA paranormal. Much of the latest YA paranormals have been Nephilim based. Whether or not this emerging trend is a blessing or a curse is not a concern, but I have to say that this trend allows me to be thankful that a series like this one has come out. Ember and Iridescent together create a series that is rich in realistically conflicted characters and intricately woven writing.
Ember begins with Candra trapped in a conflict between angels and her relationship between her bodyguard, Sebastian, and acquaintance, Draven. The plot of Ember is somewhat mediocre, but the characters were so beautifully described and mysterious that I just couldn't look away. Each of the characters had his or her own secrets hidden from everyone else and those secrets were dark, disturbing, and helped the plot to be set apart from most others. Instead of being good vs. bad, everyone wasn't just black or white, they were all a variety of shades of gray.
In terms of plot, I felt Ember was flawed in its execution and presentation. For the first 100 or so pages, I was lost in this world of Nephilim. I had no idea what was going on, but as time went on, I was able to discern the the plot more easily and could along more easily with the events. If only the setting and world had been expanded on more, this book would've been more polished an exciting to read.
Meanwhile, Iridescent fared slightly better. Of course, the climatic buildup at the end slowed the book in the beginning. This time, the setting and conflict was already known, so I found it easier to following the events occurring. However, this does not mean that I found Iridescent an improvement over Ember. They still both had the shaky plots that drove me insane. Well, at least Irisdescent had a more realistic portrayal of romance. Ember was insta-love, as Iridescent was more like love development and trials.
The thing that struck me most when reading Ember and Iridescent though was the beauty of the author's writing. Carol Oates has a true gift in writing. Despite its disappointing plot, the book was able to flow because of Oates' inherent ability to write with a voice that is so vivid and descriptive. Even as I was confused over the events at the beginning, I just couldn't resist the dream-like quality that the book possessed that was absolutely enchanting.
Overall, Ember and Iridescent were fascinating retellings of the Nephilim. Regardless of its numerous flaws, I was thrilled as I dived into this Nephilim world. I do recommend for anyone to try Ember and Iridescent, they're just reads that will leave you as conflicted and emotional as the characters are.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not a book blogger or a pro reader/reviewer. I only talk about the books I read for fun, just to express my feelings for them.
Ok I first heard of Ember from a character interview of Sebastian and Draven(the hot guys in this book) on a blog site that I won't name because unfortunately I can't remember. That alone drew me in and then I found out this book is about angels so I immediately bought this book on my Nook. Wow did this story grab my attention. I mean how can it not when the first that happens is Candra being stalked and then pushed off a parking garage. She is immediately thrown into a world she never knew existed. Even her mom(well technically stepmom) Brie is someone Candra wouln't have suspected. Soon Candra meets Sebastian who is a total hottie. He practically stalks her everywhere but this is more for protecting than actual pleasure. I loved the interactions between these two. It was so funny because they hate each other and always going at it. Candra is very tough and stubborn. When she wants to know something, one way or another she will find it out. Sebastian is also the same way. Very moody and stubborn when something doesn't go his way. Sebastian could be sweet but his real personality got the better of him most of the time. So putting these two together was just awesome because of their constant clashing. Already the plot of the story is unfolding and this is just in the beginning of the story. Ember was pretty much a great roller coaster ride. Up was down, down was up, good was bad, and bad was good. I mentioned Draven earlier so it's time to talk about him lol. I definitely loved Draven. Candra first meets him at a party where we first see his sexy side. Sadly Draven wasn't in this book as often as a charcter should but the times he was had me loving him more. Draven is the cocky, arrogant, one who knows just how to push the right buttons at the right time and Candra was always left reeling and wowed after being around him. I was rooting more for him than Sebastian(sorry but I still love you lol). Like I said this book was a ride and I was definitely on the edge of my seat. Nothing in Ember was what I predicted or expected which is what I loved most about this book. The ending was definitely a wow factor, another part that I didn't see coming. It's left wrapped up but somewhat open ended so this could stay a stand alone novel or could be continued which I'm crossing my fingers that it will be. If not, that's fine because Ember was an amazing read that I highly recommend, especially if you love reading about angels.

I was rooting more for him than Sebastian(sorry but I still love you lol). Like I said this book was a ride and I was definitely on the edge of my seat. Nothing in Ember was what I predicted or expected which is what I loved most about this book. The ending was definitely a wow factor, another part that I didn't see coming. It's left wrapped up but somewhat open ended so this could stay a stand alone novel or could be continued which I'm crossing my fingers that it will be. If not, that's fine because Ember was an amazing read that I highly recommend, especially if you love reading about angels.

This doesn't have an effect my rating since I knew what I could potentially be getting into when I accepted this book for review, but I just wanted to include my thoughts on it here: the only problem I had with EMBER is that something happens in the story that is thoroughly against my beliefs. This is the main reason why I don't usually read books with angels in them, because they tend to go against my beliefs at some point (usually some form of: there isn't a God, or He really hates us so he sent us here to suffer, and so on). I'm not saying what it is that happened in this book because that would be a spoiler, but it didn't sit well with me. Though to be fair, this particular thing I'm talking about was only ever mentioned two or three times in the book.

With that out of the way, I can get on to the good stuff! This is a great paranormal romance, with great writing and, lots of tension and heartache, and two very sexy men--er, angels. The characterizations are spot-on, and I enjoyed the smart conversations between the characters. Even the arguments between characters were thoughtful and full of emotion. With only a few exceptions, these characters talked their problems out until they were resolved--or at least until the angry tension was replaced with understanding. This is something I really admire about this book. Carol Oates made these characters into thinking people, instead of characters who make their own assumptions and wrong conclusions about everything.

Carol Oates has done another amazing job with this first book in her new series. I absolutely loved her debut novel Shades of Atlantis and was thrilled with the chance to read her next book.
In Ember we are introduced to Candra who, after a strange and intense encounter with a fearsome woman, wakes up in the hospital with a whole new reality. Everything she thought she'd known about herself and her father are completely turned upside down.
And if that's not enough, her affections and loyalties are being pulled in two different directions. With Sebastian, a Watcher angel, stalking her every move and Draven, Sebastian's enemy, insisting on Candra becoming his. But will Candra be able to betray her heart in order to prevent disaster? Or will it all be for nothing?
I was a part of the blog tour for this book and was so happy to be able to participate! Carol has such an amazing way of weaving a tale and leaving her readers longing for more, so when the opportunity to be able to read this new book of hers, I jumped at the chance.
Candra was such an interesting character. She was strong and feisty, loving and selfless. I loved that she was a complex character without being whiny or irritating. She was who she was and made no apologies for that. And the same went for Sebastian and Draven. Although, Sebastian was brooding, but that isn't always a bad thing.
The relationship between Candra and Sebastian was one that I really enjoyed. There wasn't any love at first sight here. Nope, for a good while Candra and Sebastian annoyed each other and fought most of the time, it took a while for them to fall in love. And the build up for more between them only added to the heartbreak of what was to come and made the story even better. I found my heart leaping into my throat quite a number of times.
One of the best things about this story is that it seems like you know exactly where it's headed, but in the end Carol throws you for a big loop. Everything appeared clearly laid out at one point, but there was so much more going on than we as readers new, and even more of the story left to tell.
I absolutely love Carol Oates' writing and can't wait for the sequel for not only this story, but for Shades of Atlantis (which I believe is going to be called Shades of Avalon). She is a wonderful story teller.

My Summary:
Candra Ember has lived eighteen years without believing in angels. Then she meets a red-haired stranger in a parking garage. Nothing unusual there, right? Well, unless you count that she fell from that parking garage and lived. Or what about the gorgeous boy she saw right afterwards that she was sure had wings. Maybe the paramedics gave her something, cause that can’t be right. When she wakes up in the hospital she finds out it is right. Now that boy, Sebastian, is protecting her from other angels, or is he the danger? It’s all pretty complicated. That complication is increased when Candra has to make a choice that could mean war or love. It’s nowhere near fair.
My Thoughts:

I enjoyed the world that Carol creates in Ember. There are angels living among us that have been here for generations. Not all angels are the same and not all are good. But it’s impossible to decide who the good ones are and who the bad ones are. It all seems to be a matter of perspective. It’s not a clear cut choice like you see in a lot of angel stories and that added to the mystery of the book.
I enjoyed Candra, the heroine. She was fiery and strong. Sometimes she flaked out a little and I wanted to smack her but she usually redeemed herself. I will admit I was confused about how her step mom treated her. Bri often acted like Candra was younger, sending her to her room. Seriously, she eighteen years old. But then it’s not your normal mother daughter relationship by a long shot.
Now, let me tell you about Sebastian. He is gorgeous, of course. He is strong and wants very much to protect Candra. But he is far from perfect. He is stubborn and hard headed. He has anger issues, yeah that describes it well. Angel wings whipped out and trashing yet another shirt, attacking without thinking. That would be Sebastian. Did I mention that he is gorgeous and very male? Yeah, I guess I did. Anyway, I’m #TeamSebastian for sure.
The only real issue I had was the ending. Candra was asking what just happened and I was doing the same thing. Not that I didn’t like the ending, I really liked the ending. It’s just… well I probably shouldn't say any more. You’ll understand cause you really should read this book. It’s a great paranormal romance. Pick it up!

Anyone who tries to get between me and an angel book better be careful. I devour them like nobody’s business. As soon as I started reading Ember, I couldn’t stop. The characters drew me right in. So did all of the questions that are brought to light within the first few chapters. I had to read more to figure out what was going on and what kind of situation Candra was stuck in.
I got the feeling from the synopsis that there would be a love triangle, but not like the one I got. Candra’s relationship with Sebastian was... difficult to say the least. And what goes on between Candra and Draven... I don’t really know what to call it or say about it. It’s odd and complicated. But Sebastian is my guy for sure. It was a bit hard equating Sebastian’s thoughts and feelings. He’s not supposed to like Candra for what she is, but he’s trying to protect her. He knows he feels something more, but tries to deny it. It was so frustrating knowing that he cared about Candra, but was trying so hard to avoid his feelings. He was a jerk a lot of the time because of this. And very hot-and-cold. Sometimes it was so quick I felt like I was getting whiplash, and I know Candra felt the same way. He is a very complex character with lots of layers.
It was really interesting seeing Candra slowly learn about who she is and who Sebastian, Lofi, and Brie are. It was confusing at some points, where I felt there were gaps in the story or that I’d missed something. I actually skipped back a couple of times to see if I’d forgotten something I’d read because I was confused, but only realized that it hadn’t really been explained at all. Eventually, these gaps were closed in later or by method of deduction on my part. So I feel like there were some continuity issues that could have been better handled.
Ember is another great angel story to add to the list. I can’t seem to get enough of angel stories. Although it is comparable to some stories purely because of the angel lore, it definitely stands on its own as a strong story with great characters. Aside from the continuity issues, this is a fantastic novel that I’m super happy I got to review!

It's been a long time since a book surprised me at every turn and Ember certainly did that. Candra's story is angst ridden with choices between what she wants and what is best for mankind. Quiet a responsibility to shoulder for a college student. At first there's Sebastian - gorgeous, arrogant Sebastian - who has been watching her for sometime and is abruptly inserted into her life. At first he is nothing but a nuisance, constantly causing strife for Candra with his condescending demeanor and half truths as to why he's 'protecting' her. I couldn't help but laugh along with Sebastian when he got under Candra's skin during their disagreements. It was endearing at times, reminding me how a boy would pick on a girl he likes in kindergarten.
As their relationship developed Candra began to fall hard for her hottie Watcher, but what does Sebastian feel? And what were his motives? I couldn't understand them because he seemed at odds with himself for most of the book until I was given a good look inside his head muddled head. All of his secrets come to light when his rival Draven, another Watcher, comes into the story. He reveals the dark truths about the Watchers history, what Sebastian's role was in the war, and that he intended to have Candra with him to prevent history from repeating itself. This made me question who was the real bad guy was in this convoluted love triangle. For a time I began to think that neither Watcher was good enough for Candra to fall for, especially Sebastian who seemed more selfish then anything, but then I got to read about how torn he was.
Candra represented everything that he stood against in the first war, and here he was willing to start another one to keep her with him. I loved how his character struggled and developed with the story. Even Draven's character developed nicely which showed through at the end. And the ending - oh the ending! I was giddy with glee at the surprising twist! I honestly did not think either men had it in them.
Ember was an incredible ride with many twists and an unnatural turns. A great addition to the Young Author scene. A note to the wise, if you are easily affected by emotional turmoil I suggest you have tissues in hand.

Overall, I found Ember to be a delightful story that blended angels and battles with modern life in a surprisingly realistic way. Oh, Candra! I felt her confusion as she learned about her past and tried to navigate a future that seemed to flash between beauty and darkness, between peace and war. Luckily, she had a few good girlfriends to help her on her way - Ivy and Lofi. While I loved Ivy, I found myself wanting to spend time with Lofi so that I could get to know her better.
But the tension between Candra and Sebastian pulled me deeper into the story. (Since this was one of the first books I read on my Kindle, I played with the Notes and Marks function. Of my 14 notes, 10 were about Sebastian!) He seemed so hard, so tough at first, but then he gave in to his feelings for Candra. And he beat himself up for it. And he gave in again. I enjoyed the push and pull relationship between Candra and Sebastian, and the tension between them kept me wondering who and what was truly best for her.
Draven had the best line by far in the whole book. Innocent flirting between Candra and "Daniel" (as he introduced himself to her) at a party turned into much more as he took her hand in his, lifted it to his face, and gently sniffed across her wrist. In an exchange that begs to be read more than once, Candra melted from his touch as he said, "I think I will call you 'my Candra' from now on." Stalker-esque perhaps, as Candra herself tells him, but in that one line I could sense that "Daniel" came from another time, another era when possession and love were one in the same. He hastily left the party, but I hoped he would be back for more. Luckily, I wasn't disappointed!
The only issue I had with the book was the opening. (Keep in mind, I was reading it on vacation at the beach, but I had to go back twice to re-read because I felt like I missed something.) But I quickly moved past that and into the heart of the book where I fell into Carol's easy rhythm of smooth writing. And the ending - well, I think I've read and re-read it three times now! So keep writing, Carol. I'd love to spend more time with Candra, Sebastian, and even Draven, someday soon.

Ok, so this review is going to be different than most of my other reviews. I am going to be reviewing both books 1 and 2 together. I will give my general thoughts on the series and then try and break down book 1 and book 2. It will be hard for me because I loved book 1 so much that I immediately had to start reading book two right after and as a result, I can't really separate the two books completely. But the good news is, that I totally loved both of them! Normally, after I am done reading a book, I take some time and jot some notes and impressions down for my review. But As soon as I finished Ember I just had to pick up Iridescent and keep reading. I think I paused for all of 1 minute.
Let's start with book 1. Ember throws you right into the action, and while I was a little confused for the first 5-10 pages, I quickly got my bearings and I became engrossed in the story. I loved seeing the sparring and the back and forth between Candra and Sebastian. They were so cute! I also really liked the depiction of the angels in this book. They are not really super religious angels, but more like spiritual angels. This means that the books are not preachy AT. ALL. These are actually angels like I have never encountered before- they are very human. But with wings of course.
Ember had a big task. There were tons of questions that needed to be answered and Candra certainly wasn't going to stop until she got them. And even though the characters are sometimes pretty dense as to their feelings, there is actually a really great romance in Ember.
Iridescent picks up relatively soon after Ember ended. This book focused more on Draven. And as much as I wanted to hate him, but I didn't really. I found myself more mad at Sebastian. I knew what he was doing but I just wanted to slap him for being an idiot! Agh! There is a ton of action in these books as well. I loved the way Ember ended but I was kind of nervous about what would happen in this book. But a ton of stuff happened!

Whew! I can't tell you what I was expecting when I signed up to review Ember, but whatever it was, I can say that it wasn't this. This was an amazing, heartwrenching and heartlifting ride. A small part of me wanted it to be kind of corny, and I guess in another setting or environment it would be. I mean it's aboiut angels and Nephilim and the war that has not completely ended. Ember was pushed into a whirlwind of discovery, learning who and what she truly was, who her father had been and a whole host of other secrets.. On top pf all that, she now has the burden of saving humanity on her shoulders. She must face this without really knowing who it is that she can trust.
But in truth, we don't know who it is that's trustworthy either,a nd that makes it even better. There is Sebastian who tries to hide from his bloody past. Then there's Draven who holds way too many secrets for me to fully trust him. The rivalry is thick and the sexiness factor is ramped up to dangerous heatstroke levels.
Candra was the perfect characer to see this wold through, it was as new to her as it was to us. Maybe that's why her struggle seemed so real. I could almost feel every touch, every gasp, ever sigh. it was so utterly real that I totally forgot that angels aren't supposed to exist. I could go on and on about what I loved about this book, but to keep it short I think you should just go out and get your own copy.
If I had to list any complaints, it would be that even with the ending the enemies are not clearly defined. IF what Draven says is true than, why did he go to the lengths he went through to get everyone together. But the cliffhanger at the end? I'm never a huge fan of cliffhangers, but I kind of liked this one. It definitely keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat while waiting for Book #1 Iridescent, due out in October.
Recommendation: Go get you a copy of Ember right now! If you don't read this, you will be disappointed.

Then there's Draven who holds way too many secrets for me to fully trust him. The rivalry is thick and the sexiness factor is ramped up to dangerous heatstroke levels.
Candra was the perfect characer to see this wold through, it was as new to her as it was to us. Maybe that's why her struggle seemed so real. I could almost feel every touch, every gasp, ever sigh. it was so utterly real that I totally forgot that angels aren't supposed to exist. I could go on and on about what I loved about this book, but to keep it short I think you should just go out and get your own copy.
If I had to list any complaints, it would be that even with the ending the enemies are not clearly defined. IF what Draven says is true than, why did he go to the lengths he went through to get everyone together. But the cliffhanger at the end? I'm never a huge fan of cliffhangers, but I kind of liked this one. It definitely keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat while waiting for Book #1 Iridescent, due out in October.
Recommendation: Go get you a copy of Ember right now! If you don't read this, you will be disappointed.

Ember was an awesome read. It was one of those books you can't put down til the end and once your finished you can't stop thinking about how it will continue on, kind of like a book high. Carol Oates descriptive details in the story came alive in your mind, you can see things as you were reading like I have never had before. I love her style of writing. This book is awesome, I would highly recommend it to anyone. I think Carol did an amazing job with this book, it was unlike any of the "traditional" stories you read about with angels. Ember was full of secrets, lies, and so much more.
Cambra has just been told that she is not who she think she is and neither was her father. Cambra is just about to find out how confusing her life really is. Her father was a fallen angel, her mother, a human making her Nephilim. The only one of her kind. She was hidden away from the angels, so that she would not been killed, because it was thought that the Nephilim were soulless and evil.
Sebastian the leader of the angels that took the lives of the Nephilim, was searching for his partner who fell from Heaven years ago, however, he didnt expect to find Cambra, it was his mission to kill her kind, but once he saw her, he know she was unlike the rest. He couldn't do it.
Now Sebastian is trying to protect Cambra from Draven. Draven is practically forcing Cambra to his side of the Angels. She accepts only because if she doesnt he has promised a war between the angels. Sebastian isn't about to let her make that choice he's willing to do everything in his power to make sure she never belongs to Draven.
After Cambra has spent so much time together with Sebastian, while under his protection, she is falling for him more and more every day and doesn't know if she can keep the promise she has already made.

For the last week this Ember has been on TBR list. An ever growing list. But I truly enjoyed this book and all the characters: both good and bad.
Ember is a story revolving around the fallen angels and the battle between the two that will never end. I have to say that I do enjoy all these angel novels being published. They are starting to overshadow the vampire craze, and for that I am grateful! I love the twist that Carol Oates intertwined into this book!
Candra is a beautiful, normal girl who all of a sudden wakes up in the hospital. Remembering a guy with wings and a red haired lady that wouldn't seem to leave her alone. And quickly after this the books dive straight into the story, there is no beating around the bush and long drawn out descriptions causing the reader to lose the will to live. It stays at a fast past the whole time. Sebastian is a nephil who has been following Candra around everywhere, and what he thinks is innocent starts to became far more for him until it's too late. Once Candra is knows what she is, and what the people are around here she is faced with a major choice that will effect the lives of everyone.
I loved Sebastian and Candra and the chemistry that these two had. I'm surprised my computer didn't short circuit and fry out from their scenes. I'd say every scene with the two of them together is great!
My only reason for not giving it a 5 star is, I felt alot was missing out. Like the editor just cut a big chunk out. Usually I complain that there is too much detail. I'd say with Ember there needed to more!!
All I can hope for is that there will be a sequel to this novel!! Carol Oates' books are definitely on my to read list!

First I would like to Thank AToMR Tours for allowing me to be on this EPIC tour. I have to say that anyone who knows me knows I love Angel stories. This Angel story totally blew me away! Not only was it clean but it grabbed you right from the first page and kept you reading until the end. Ember was another Angel/Fallen Angel novel that I enjoyed. I like how the angels were part of different groups and each wanted something different from Candra. I also liked that you didn’t really know which group had the motives that were for the greater good I think Carol wrote both groups wonderfully that it kept me guessing who was bad/good and where the story was going to lead. I liked Candra’s and Sebastian’s relationship. It was one of those relationships where you could see where it was heading before the characters did and you just wanted to give them each a nudge in the right direction. I liked how Candra’s character was complex and she was constantly running into road blocks that would either push her toward one group of angels and make sure completely want to ignore them. I felt Candra’s pain when she had to deal with something that broke her down completely (I’m not going to give what exactly that is - it will ruin it for you and I can’t do that).The story was well written that I didn’t get bored and wanted more to read. I can’t wait to see where the story is going to go.

I really enjoyed reading Ember, I really did. It was a fascinating story with a lot going on, and I felt there was a good pace, a good flow throughout. The story itself deals with Candra, and we first find her in a suspenseful scene that lands her in the hospital, and she has no idea what happened, but remembers a good looking guy, and perhaps some wings? What? Well, eventually she meets the guy with the wings, Sebastian, but he is not telling her anything, literally, so she tries to find some answers from her Stepmother whom is also tightlipped, but she somehow knows Sebastian. What Candra finds as answers is ultimately shocking to her, but she tries to adjust to keep her normal life, even though things are going to change, but are they for the better...or worse? And why does Draven, Sebastian's rival, want to be with Candra so badly? Well, you just got to read this first book in this series, to find out, and let me say it's not at all disappointing!

I couldn't get enough of this book. Any chance I got, I was reading it! There were so many unique aspects to this story. For one, you don't have a clear picture of who's good or who's bad. That really kept me on my toes while I read. Even though I favored Sebastian from the start, I couldn't help but wonder what his true motives were. There are two main groups of angels, and both sides want something from Candra. Like Candra, I had a hard time picking a side. Both choices seemed to have good intentions. But do they really? I'm not telling! There are surprising twists and turns as you ride the emotional roller coaster with Candra. The wrong choice could mean war. Or maybe it's the right choice? Hmm.

Ember tells us the story about Candra Ember, a girl that just happened to learn the hard way that she is a Nephil. Yes, this is an angel’s book and our girl is not an ordinary Nephil: she is kind, good and has a soul.
I loved the Candra and Sebastian’s dynamics and I think Candra was the strongest character of this book. She really is one of a kind. .

Ember is a "Go Away, Real Life, I'm Reading!" kind of book. But then I'm a sucker for angst and cool supernatural things that take place in regular old human world. Snarky, sexy, conflicted fallen angels still reeling from a centuries old war and on the brink of another, and 18 year old college student Candra finds herself stalked by two warring factions. This is YA, but steamy for all that. Not inappropriate for the high school set, it's relevant enough for anyone who likes a good mythology. Can't wait for the sequel!
