Big Bad Campion likes twinks—and he likes them on their knees.Taking advantage of the kid in the mail room is supposed to be a one-time thing, a kinky fantasy come to life. At first, that’s exactly what it is. Big Bad in charge with a submissive college boy at his feet. The kid’s a little mouthy, but that just makes it better when Bad shuts him up.Filthy encounters build up until Bad realizes Red’s gotten under his skin, and by then it’s way too late to cut the kid off without a word of goodbye. Plus, as long as Red knows the only rule—which is that Bad makes all the rules—things should be just fine. And they are. Until Little Red demands more than terse orders and Bad finds himself bewildered. And a little…intrigued. All he wanted was to get off with a disposable college boy. He wasn’t supposed to care about Red’s feelings. And he sure as hell wasn’t supposed to have any of his own.
Kris Ripper lives in the great state of California and zir pronouns are ze/zir. Kris shares a converted garage with a kid, can do two pull-ups in a row, and can write backwards. (No, really.) Ze has been writing fiction since ze learned how to write, and boring zir stuffed animals with stories long before that.
I've owned this one for waaaaay too long, and I was SO in the mood! Simply devoured it. I just love the way Kris Ripper builds a relationship - and dayum just so dirty! Fabulous.
And fans of this one, I've just got to recommend Cin Forrester's Off Limits series. It's heavy on the spanking but the relationship between the MCs is comparable.
Smoking-hot porn that catches feels, much like Bad himself. I considered tagging this as dubcon: Bad works as a campus security guard; Red, who works in the campus mailroom, masturbates while his co-worker is on break, and Bad has been watching him on the security cam. But then I thought ... Yeah, Red, you know damn well that camera is there, you slutty little exhibitionist you, and God bless and keep you and your filthy perversions.
The sex gets hotter and hotter and kinkier and kinkier, but I don't think Red is quite certain of Bad's basic goodwill until the night when they have a miscommunication about safewording, at which point the sex gets even hotter and even kinkier. The kink did hit a hard no for me (borderline scat, by which I do not mean rimming); honestly I think I would have stuck with the story anyway for the sake of the relationship and all the sex that didn't come anywhere near my hard limits (at least, in reading; I don't think I'd be into ball-crushing in real life, but since I don't have balls and am not sexually involved with anyone in possession of same, the question doesn't arise).
Romantic porn or porny romance, with a favorite BDSM trope: the closed-off dom/top/sadist whose heart is broken open by the sub, and the exquisitely submissive and masochistic sub whose autonomy you don't dare doubt and who (of course) ultimately sets the terms of the relationship.
Honestly I was a bit overwhelmed and kind of confused with my on feelings by this book, because I didn’t know if I like it or not. I never read a book with that kind of dirty talk and if I’m honest it made me kind of uncomfortable at the beginning, also the whole thing between Red and Bad got really intense and sometimes, I was kind of worried if they will really get to have a real connection. But I‘m glad I didn’t gave up at this book because in the end I really loved it! Now I’m excited for volume 2 , can’t wait to read how things between those two will move forward and how they manage when they start living together.
Kris Ripper describes this series on zir website as "something a bit more, uh, porny." Kris Ripper does not lie. Bit more porny, indeed!!
I really don't know how to rate this. I mean, who am I kidding, I'm gonna give it 4-stars because I love Kris Ripper's writing and I was completely sucked into this and immediately started book 2 as soon as I finished book 1. (In other words: this 4-star is very much grading on a curve and influenced by my own weirdly protective sentiment towards Kris Ripper's authorship. Consider that my caveat.)
On the other hand: there are times where I really didn't like it. It was maybe a bit extreme for my tastes, at least in parts. Like, serious rough play, pain play, and I wouldn't necessarily say dubcon but I wouldn't not say dubcon, if that makes sense.
But I think my bigger problem was that I didn't really get a good sense of how Bad and Red fit together or whether they even really liked each other, outside of all the sexcapades. I kind of had a handle on Bad: big bad dom who absolutely won't catch feelings (until he inevitably does), and then will deny it till he's blue in the face. But I felt like I had very little sense of Red, or what he got out of the relationship. There was a lot of banging but very little hanging out or getting to know each other, or letting the reader getting to know them. It just felt a little unbalanced.
But as Ripper explains on the website, this whole book is about the sexcapades, because the duology (originally serialized in shorter episodes) is structured such that book 1 is about creating a connection through sex and book 2 is about how to make that relationship work. (And, spoiler alert: on the whole I liked book 2 much more, although the parts I didn't like about book 1 I disliked even more intensely in book 2.)
Tl; dr: this is way more porny and much less relationship- and character-focused than SMU (for SMU/ Ripper acolytes), and significantly more extreme. I'm not sorry I read it, but I doubt it's going on the re-read shelf.
I'd seen this series listed among Kris Ripper's other books and, though it piqued my interest, I forgot about them until the books were available for free for a period of a week. Y'all know me, if there's a sale, I'LL BE THERE! #LOL
So I picked them up until I was in the mood to read well-written kink.
I gotta say that it's unlike ANYTHING else I've read by Ripper. Like, the first thing you need to keep in mind if you pick up this book is that the BDSM is HEAVY. Bad and Red are on the Risk Aware Consensual Kink side of things (vs. the Safe Sane Consensual one.) Red does have a safework (which he uses), but his relationship with Bad is one of total power exchange.
In addition to S/M, they also share a dual predilection for predicament kink and humiliation kink. Although Red does not end up being completely dehumanized, he gets taken down and then some.
Bad is not a terrible person, but he's not a great person either. At times, I was legit conflicted as to how to feel about him. He's got a tendency to say incredibly misogynistic things at times.
I do like that Red had a found family of sorts (including a POC character.) His journey was learning to communicate.
Up until Chapter 6, the story's all about limits being pushed for both Bad and Red. They go places that might make some readers go O__O. BUT THEN, just when things become too much kinkwise, Ripper flipped the script and brought in some HARDCORE!FEEEEEEEEELS. I ended up seeing how Bad and Red fit together not only because of their shared kinks but because, by the time actual!emotions bloom, the book had showed readers who Bad and Red were.
One of the things that totally won me over was that the kink in this novel felt like a part of everyday life. There's an approachability as to how Bad and Red play. I mean, a lot of times, a kink story will feature super rich people at a fetish club, etc. BUT it's just as fun to see average people immersing themselves into kink play via pervertibles because that's how they are wired. The story progresses at a great pace and it's close to impossible to not get swept away.
There are 3 female characters who give as much as they take. None of them are perfect.
On the downside, Chapter 5 features some fatphobia toward both a female character and a male character.
TL;DR: If you're a fan of Kris Ripper from the Queers of La Vista series, the first chapters for THIS book might feel like a cold shower. The sex is v. rough and might feel like a bumpy ride. I can imagine some people starting this book and going NOPE once the first couple of kink scenes happen. Which is totes OK. The masochism and sadism are quite strong.
I do recommend it with the caveat that Bad and Red are SRS BIZNESS about their kinks to the point that might make some uncomfortable. Bad doesn't give Red the chance to hide and neither does this novel. The romance between Bad and Red takes its time to build up but it does pay off.
This was a weird read for me. A lot of the kink is less sexy dirty, more literal dirty -- like "ew gross, don't put that in your mouth THE GERMS" 😂 😂😂 dirty -- and Red's reactions to a lot of it are often expressed less in sensual terms and more as being captivated or in thrall, so there are lots of moments where you're wondering if he's also thinking ewwww. (He's really, really not.)
And it's just (weird) kink, (weird) kink, (weird) kink practically non-stop for the majority of the book. Then all of the sudden the emotions kicked in and here I am rating this much higher than I would have ever guessed. (Although that's not really super surprising, since I'm a big Kris Ripper fan. We have very good author-reader chemistry.)
The ending was satisfying, so you could definitely read it as a standalone, but I jumped straight to Book 2, which turned into a much harder read than I anticipated, just FYI.
Just working my way through all the SMU offshoots, as one does. I wouldn’t say this book is a favorite, but Kris Ripper isn’t going to write a book I don’t like.
”Maybe he was high on sex endorphins, or deluded by Disney movies, but at the moment Red didn’t care.” TBH this doesn’t sound like a bad way to go through life.
Wow, I know just how Red felt. He hated Bad hurting and humiliating him, but he loved it even more. I cringed often while reading their crazy love story, but I couldn’t stop reading because I loved it too. I don’t think I would ever be down for that kind of pain. I have to admit it’s a dark and sexy read. If you’re looking for something dark, hot and a little twisted I highly recommend reading this book.
This book is KINKY AF, and I loved it. Bad is a college security guard who gets off on ordering Red, a student in the mailroom, to do various and often humiliating things - but Red enjoys it just as much. Personally, I fall into the "wimp" rather than "masochist" category, but it's still fun reading about people who get INTO that kind of thing. It was also fun watching these two guys slowly fall into a relationship when it was just supposed to be about physical pleasure. I'm looking forward to reading the second one!
Oh my, this was a lot more kinky than I was expecting! 😅
It felt a bit insta-lust, which I suppose is a thing? Idk… anyway, I still really enjoyed it and am diving right into book 2! I just love Ripper’s writing and will pretty much read anything ze writes.
If I wasn’t trying to be a SMU completist and didn’t know how Bad and Red lightly figures in with Hugh, Truman, and Will later, I probably would have DNFed early on. Bad starts out as not just acerbic but vile. And this is an edited version! I don’t think I’d have been able to persevere if I’d read the original where he was a mega-misogynist on top of everything else. The misogyny did not get completely edited out but the remaining traces were bearable. Or at least paled in comparison to the rest of his character defects.
Luckily, as things progress with Red, Bad does start to soften but I still can’t say I’m his biggest fan. Perhaps that will come in book 2. Red, on the other hand, is great. I hope he knows what he’s doing.
Characters: Bad/Charles is a 30 year old gay white college security guard, MBA student, yoga teacher, and Dom. Red is a 21 year old gay white college junior and submissive.
Content notes: stalking via security cameras, past college rape scandal, Bad fatshames a coworker, fatphobic slur, fatphobia, homophobic slurs, homophobic parents (not on page), misogynist slurs, ableist slur , professional ethics violation (employee and student relationship), past parental divorce, skipping meals, body commentary, vomit, penetrative sex is the only “real” sex (countered eventually), dubious consent (Bad doesn’t explain much or give many options initially), on page sex, D/s, degradation play, bar bathroom sex, security camera sex, impact play, pain play (binder clips), rope play, ball torture, exhibitionism/voyeurism, domestic discipline, workplace sex, porn, rimming, Sharpies as anal toys, anal plug, masturbation, alcohol, inebriation, hangover, marijuana, diet culture, STD stigma, penis insults (“little”), ableist insult, gendered pejoratives, gender essentialist language, ableist language, hyperbolic language around suicide, mention of stopping past sexual assault of a student
This was a rollercoaster. How did Bad know that Red would be into such extreme kink just by watching him in a security video? But he was right: pain play, CBT, humiliation... Red was into it. At times this was close to dubcon, but in the end, Red loved everything Bad did.
In the beginning I didn't really like Bad; I thought he was an asshole. However, as the story went on and Bad started to have feelings for Red, I liked him more and more. Red also started speaking up. Yes, Bad was in charge and made the rules, but Red made sure to make his feelings known. I loved that.
I'm very excited to see where things go in the second book. Now that they've admitted to having feelings, how will their dirty, kinky relationship change?
I "met" this pair in a short story in The Library: Stories and Scenes from the Scientific Method Universe (I've read all of those books).
This was a tough read for me for two reasons. I'm not into pain from either side, so nothing the characters enjoy are things I enjoy. And, Bad was a tough character to warm up to - I had to trust Red's reactions for half the book. But by the end, I was glad I already have the second book. The only character that felt inconsistently portrayed and represented to me was Red's overprotective friend. Maybe she gets that in the next book.
I was introduced to Bad & Red because of the SMU. And I’m glad to get a glimpse into their world. I can see why anyone just getting into this not knowing the characters could be confused or turned off by Bad. But he knows exactly what he wants and he’s unapologetic about it. He also uses his words to enhance the degradation & humiliation. Even tho he comes off like a complete neanderthal, but he’s really not. He has a lot of heavy kinks, I can see trying to find someone who enjoys them as well being difficult. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Kris Ripper's books are actually unmatched. I'm not properly reviewing this because I'm on holidays but literally anything Ripper writes in the general SMU I will immediately read. It weirdly feels so safe, the characters all being so loving and genuine towards one another. Ripper writes steamy stories with this unmatched level of depth and humanity. Zir books explore the importance of communication and acceptance in relationships in this really comforting way.
I've nearly exhausted zir catalogue so please send me recs of similar books 😭
This book was interesting. I mean I’m not opposed to kink at all and the link was hit. I think it was the dialogue that had me eye rolling a bit. I didn’t like Red at first snd it took me awhile to warm up so it took me a while to finish. He grew on me though. Writing was top notch.
Eh this one really wasn't my favorite. It had kinks I didn't like (using slut and super rough sex, also the dirty talk didn't work for me). I also wanted Bad to be more emotionally present as a dom. He's pretty distant and demanding. If you're into super alpha guys you'll like them! I think they did get to talk more and Red got to communicate what he wanted eventually so I appreciate that.
Trigger alert this book is REALLY deep S&M so be aware. This kind of heavy kink is usually not my fav but Kris writes it so well I just sank right into it. These guys are so perfect for each other it literally hurts, at least it hurts Red ;). Erotic as hell!
This has some hardcore f’ed up scenes, with a fair amount of stuff I don’t enjoy seeing a character go through, even if they are okay with it. However, Ripper still pulled me through it and this pair end as a couple.
Kris has done it again, written a great story that pulls you in and keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next. I didn't know what to make of Big Bad at first, hoping that he wasn't just using Little Red, but all came good. Kris has a wonderful way of developing the MC's that I always look forward to reading ze work.
Wow. At first, I wasn’t going to rate this one because I genuinely didn’t know how. I went into this with my eyes open and knew the kink would be heavier than in the other books by Kris Ripper I’ve read so far. But I didn’t realize just how uncomfortable it would make me - while at the same time the writing was so good I didn’t want to dnf. My discomfort is entirely on me, as is my completist streak (I love zir books and will read all of them, even if it pushes my limits).
So yeah, this book is full of kinky things I‘ve never encountered in books before, and I don’t consider myself all that sheltered. But the thing is, even though I read it with a metaphorical hand before my eyes, I was impressed by the characters, their interactions, and the way their relationship develops. I doubt I will ever read this again, but I *will* read the sequel, and not just for completions sake. And I settled on four stars in the end because it was really good, even though I didn’t enjoy myself all that much.
As an aside, what I appreciate most about Kris Ripper’s books (apart from Truman and Will and Hugh and Cameron and Josh and Keith and...) is the way ze makes me re-evaluate what relationships can look like. I think zir writing challenges me in the best of ways, and that is why ze has become of my favorite writers.
